The Xiaomi Smart Band 7 comes with a larger display than its predecessor with a solid robust feel and IP water resistance rating for a wearable brand. The box lists the major features in a variety of languages, suitable throughout the world. The band comes with one strap (Strap buckle: aluminium alloy) that fits all hand sizes and fits left or right hand. Battery charging

The battery charging typical 14 days but as suggested when major features were turned on and the default light was turned to max time, the usage time was reduced to about 9 days in line with the manufactures data during this review.

The biggest niggle of this tracker is the proprietary magnetic charger. This is required while supplied this unique charger has to be fitted to the tracker to charge. This additional charger in techbuzz view (as with all smartwatches/trackers) should be replaced with a standardised approach of a wireless charger option or UBC C charger cable for android users.

App:  Mi Fitness (Xiaomi Wear)

The setup of the app was easy with a QR code on the tracker allowing for easy finding and downloading. The App has over 10 million downloads with a 3.9-star rating from over 261 thousand reviews.  On the rating, I possible would rate the app a little bit higher, as from the setup to the use, this was fast, fluent in transactions, and worked as required. The developers have their act together with experience gained in the range on their previous products, The only slight niggle on occasions I had to manually sync to the android phone on few occasions when the phone was separated out of Bluetooth range of the phone. This would have auto-sync over time but on occasion when I want instant updates.

The app allows for tracking workouts and monitoring your fitness. Not limited to tracking your progress. Track your walks, runs, and bike rides right from your phone. Check your heart rate, blood oxygen, stress, and energy level.

Overall:

The Tracker is solid, and has over 110+ fitness modes, with a battery life quoted as 14 days which exceeds most other trackers. (Albeit reduced to about 9 days with most of the features enables) The tracker can be used in most water sports which is less than 50 meters (5ATM). The design of the strap allows for the tracker to be used on all hand sizes and

With the option to replace this with a variety of colours e.g., elegant Ivory, lively Orange, tranquil Olive, stretched Blue, sakura Pink or mystery, Black. The Mi Fitness (Xiaomi Wear) App works as expected leisurely, the screen is logical with the options to enable, or disable features.  The key features are visible on the watch or via the app.

The Motion Sensor 3-axis accelerometer, during my comparisons with 2 other well know branded devices provide similar results in terms of step counts.  The 110 fitness modes should suffice for most amateur or semi-pro athletes or just trying to encourage their fitness. There are various reminders to get up and move or set targets for workouts.  This is a solid kit with a great history of making trackers that work well, have numerous features, and won’t break the bank.

Note:

Whether using the most basic tracker or the most expensive, “willpower” is required to achieve results whereas the tracker allows the ability to set goals, monitor these and flag potential health issues in real-time.

Tech Review – Chipolo CARD Spot wallet finder

The Chipolo CARD looks like a typical credit card, albeit slightly thicker with the Chipolo logo printed on the black ish card.  This model supplied is for iPhone & iPad. The card is designed in the event your e.g., wallet is lost, the card can be requested via the app to ring or use crowd surfing to find the unit.

Setup:

The setup is extremely simple in downloading the Find my app, then following instructions adding the Chipolo ONE Spot or CARD Spot to the Apple Find My app

Open the Find My app on your supported iPhone or iPad.

  •   Tap on ‘Add Other Item’.

Overall:

The Chipolo CARD Spot is easy to set up, and works as required when the card is misplaced with a Ring option to find the card locally, alternative if leaving the house this can be set to “Be Alerted” which warns should you leave without the card in your possession, in the event the card is lost the card can be tracked to where the card was seen last,  Crowd surfing can also be used to find the card. A slight niggle on the product on the “BATTERY LIFE: Up to 2 years, Renew & Recycle program available” is positive but I would prefer the option to change the battery locally rather than like changing a watch battery.

In the event, your wallet or property is lost this may be the best purchase of the year, well worth the extra insurance of having a tracker.

A certain interest in the style used, far superior to the standard box seen in local hardware shots, an elegance to the packaging. The material on the lock and outer casing felt strong, solid, the keypad rubber again was strong and not expected to fade or damage due to natural elements.

Compatibility:

Prior to purchase it is worth confirming the compatibility of the smart lock. The Welock smart lock PCB41 is suitable for most standard EU doors. The lock cylinder is adjustable for doors with a thickness of 70 to 110 cm. Welock also gives the option to send a photo of the door with size to their support teams at service@welockglobal.com, to ensure compatibility before purchase, this is a nice touch to inspire confidence before purchase.

Setup and instructions:

The manufacturer states: 

“The Welock Smart Lock installation takes less than 10 minutes. Do not need locksmith. Just follow the instruction of the included installation manual and assembly video. It’s super easy to install the smart lock by yourself within 10 minutes.”

The Kit came with an excellent set of installation instructions, large pictures with minimum text to allow clear visual aids on setting up the lock. 

In essence, purchase 3 AAA batteries, fit them into the unit, change the default password.

Remove 1 screw on the existing door, refit the same and job done. (full instructions and pictures included in the packing )

I am delighted to say the manufacturers included a “ Special Allen key”  . I have used a standard set on my own to set up the unit. I am totally against proprietary tools for a kit of this nature as when the battery is required to be replaced in about a year there is a high probability the accessories would be lost / misplaced. Normal tools can be used to replace batteries etc. card

RFID cards:

The kit came with 3 Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)  cards which are part of a wireless system comprising two components: tags and readers. The RFID cards work straight out of the box without any issues, There is the option to configure up to  20 cards to the reader if used in a multipurpose office or warehouse with various staff entering or exiting. This is an alternative to the Keyless option to have a card to replace a typical  key.

The Download of the App started well, Scanning the QR code from the box and running the software, the app went downhill on the registration.  Registration on an Android phone required putting in the country code (Interesting Ireland was down as Eire ) while the country code map froze on the initial setup and required removal and reinstall . eventually resolved and app updated) as registered via text message to the phone . The app has minimum help notes , or intuition on its use resulting  in a poor unclear  user experience,  This has the features to include card/Bluetooth/fingerprint function. Bluetooth connects the lock and multilevel authorisation. authorisation management and device management. 

Warranty:

The Smart Door Lock Cylinder comes with 1 year warranty ( 2 year warranty if you register ) but caution on the opening of the box details, as the first impression of the warranty is the card included in the box  “5 symbol “ underneath the 5 years warranty service. ( in fairness on the right on the same card does state register can enjoy 2 years free replacement, a bit of a disappointment when reading the full text ) .

Practical use.

The Keyless system in terms of those that regularly lose keys or go out on a social night out with the need to carry your keys in the event lost or stolen, the RFID card could fit in your wallet or carry no keys.  Overall, the product can have a multitude of options for the Comms IT room, locked in access to individuals, or restriction of areas for staff or visitors. Alternative to the other options the ease of installation leaves the opening in terms of Airbnb giving the client a unique code to access the building while easily changed, or Handyman access when no one is at home. 

Niggles:

  1. The kit does not come with the required 3 X AAA batteries which is a shame as when opening the kit  on the planned installation a trip to the shops is required to get a good quality AAA battery .
  2. Marketing Niggles:

The IP rating on the Website is listed as

  • Splash-proof: IP65. And also listed on the same page on the website
  • Splashproof: IP44 Safety in case of fire

This may relate to different properties indoor or outdoor but for a customer, second guessing is not the approach to be taken, Web/ Marketing  team would need to clearly adjust the marketing strategy to ensure clear and understood.

The Kit came with no mention of IP rating on the packing or documentation.

IP ratings of between 44 and 65 may be used for both indoor and general outdoor use. Anything lower than IP44 should only be used indoors, however. IP44 outdoor lights can withstand rain and are safe to use outdoors, however, should not be exposed to pressurised water such as a jet wash.

Conclusion:

The manufactured stated Slogan –  “A smart way to open your door We Lock” totally agree with the above and physical installation required no technical skills or specific tools to install. Unfortunately, the app which came with the kit, downloaded via the QR, was excellent to download and install but failed in the basics of registrations, the app pop up for country code did not work practically on occasions. Slight niggles on the marketing website in terms of the unclear message whether IP ratings of 44 or 65 are both acceptable for external use but prefer clear documented information. On opening the box greeted with a “5” logo with gave the first impression of a different warranty to actual warranty

The above niggles are minor in the overall product which I suspect will easily be resolved in future product ranges, I can’t fault the physical side of the Kit or ease of installation. The ease of installation allows for retrofitting of existing doors without the need for technical skills / specialised tools required, additional other product categories allow this to be integrated to smart homes, Alexa.  Easy setup and use with the preconfigured RFID cards and optional Keycode.

The Welock Electronic Smart Door Lock Cylinder has a array of options in terms of security, to simplify your private life, access control within companies limiting access to areas.  The option to change security code easily when used as a one off code to ensure the security risk is minimised for unauthorised access to physical and logical systems whether as a homeowner, rental property or business use is advantageous.

The kit came in a great looking package, a case with numerous accessories, without the bag a high potential to lose all the parts. The bag facilitates the carrying of additional items in the case.  The gimble is designed to allow it to use its motor and sensors to ensure the camera is supported and stabilised to ensure video footage is smooth and stable even when on the move.  The kit is stolid to allow weight cameras from a variety of the major brands to work. The OLED display while small allows the setting visible.

Setup:

The manual and marketing advise  easy  “ Easy Setup – Get Ready Anytime” Quick depending on your view of Quick, don’t expect to get operational within 1 hour, this is not due to the setup, but rather to understand how the kit works, download the software, connect to Bluetooth and calibrate the unit. The manufacturers manual as supplied has limited info with the main website as a marketing tool. This does give a full video on the Button introduction and installing and balancing.

The setup is crucial to the use of the gimble, which can involve the use of the App ZY Play in terms of calibration and the mechanical mounting and balancing on the unit.

The setup required various adjustments depending on the product type and weight of the unit and requires to be balanced to ensure the motor does not burn out which can be confusing. This is paramount to spend time on this balancing as if not done correctly can cause various issues afterwards.

 

  •       Pan Follow mode (PF): The tilt axis and roll axis motors are locked, and the camera rotates with the handle while panning horizontally. Push the joystick up/down to control the tilt axis angle, and push it left/right to control the pan axis of the camera.

 

  •       Follow mode (F): The roll axis motor is locked, and the tilt axis and pan axis motors follow the rotation of the handle. Push the joystick up/down to change the tilt angle of the camera and left/right to change the horizontal orientation of the camera.

 

  •       Point of View mode (POV): All three motors move when the handle is rotated.

 

  •       Vortex mode (V): The tilt axis motor rotates upward by 90° , and the tilt axis, roll axis, and pan axis motors follow the rotation of the handle. Push the joystick to the left/ right to control the rotation of the pan axis. How to Use CRANE-M2 S

 

  •       Go mode (GO): The roll axis motor is locked, and the tilt axis and pan axis motors quickly follow the rotation of the handle.

 

Compatible :

The crane can be used on a variety of cameras of various sizes and weights.  This includes the main brands on smartphones, iPhones, Samsung Galaxy,  Huawei, Xiaomi or traditional cameras from the Sony, Panasonic   Nikon, Fujifilm and the GoPro HERO. Connection with a smartphone mount is included while action camera accessories need to be purchased separately.

Warranty:1 year

Conclusion:

The CRANE-M2S is solid with excellent accessories and response to the buttons, The kit is required to be set up and balanced on initial use but changing from 1 unit to another again required the kit to be balanced. This balancing time with practice can be reduced with experience and the use of the quick release. This setup for each time the kit is used is by far the biggest niggle, It does work, but a novice could take an hour to get an understanding of the levers and adjustments. During this time errors in terms of zzz and axis, often come up. There is little in the way to advise on the messages rather than trial and error until balanced correctly. Again changing a camera when familiar required the balancing to be done, this can be reduced down to less than 5 minutes if used constantly but again take practice and experience to set up.

Once operational the operations are smooth, the button reactive logically, and the app works as expected with the quick mounting screw a real possible allowing for a large range of compatible units from the main brands, Overall a great product for the budding amateur to provide stable footage while on the move.

Tech Review – Jabra Engage 55 headset

The Jabra Engage 55 came in the usual style box with the features called out on the packaging.  The earphones are noticeably lighter than many predecessor units, while had the usual features in terms of headset flexibility adjustments and came with the typical Jabra charging stand.

Accessories

The Kit came with a carry case, cables, charging stand and a USB DECT adapter instead of a wireless base. You can see the unboxing here and walkthrough by Jim who has also tested this headset and finds it a “must have” piece of kit.

Setup:

The setup as described on the packaging is easy – plug in the supplied Link 400 adapter in the USB laptop port, turn on the power on the headset and are ready to go. Corporate laptops may need to have the USB port checked if locked down to facilitate access.

Charging & battery life

The Earphones  come with approx.13 hours battery  which can be charged via the supplied charger holder or via the USB A charging cable supplied. (An audio warning is given in the event of low battery) During a call should be a low waring audio sound these earphones can be plugged into a laptop, or wall charger to ensure no drop in the call.

 Range:

The range as quoted by the Jabra is a staggering 150 Meters from your computer using the compact USB DECT Link 400 adapter.  To put this in perspective, UK football stadiums are typically 105 by 68 metres while Croke Park pitch covers an area 145m long by 88m wide. As per my test, this is measured by “Line of sight” (LIS), with no opticals blocking in the way from the laptop to the headset allowing clear conversation. This worked well in the back garden but as I tested in the front, with various walls, and barriers the range diminished quickly albeit the dect technology is far superior to Bluetooth as the DECT wireless range is 15 times the average range of Class 2 Bluetooth® device. (i.e., do not expect anything close to 150 Meters in a built-up area while may work in an open warehouse, or office plan type area). This will also diminish how many people are using the network.

Security.

In modern-day, most businesses train their staff on phishing,  vishing and the treats of using Wi-Fi in the local café in terms of hacking. The Jabra Engage 55 steps up this in terms of technology with the Secure Dect wireless adapter, which has additional FIPS military-grade 256-bit encryption algorithms, to prevent snooping and keep communication, and exchanges away from prying ears or technologies.

Audio quality.

This is one of the first areas many people ask, is the Audio, ok?

In essence, most of the teams/ video calls are not focused on the high and low frequencies of classical music but on the background, noise heard on the calls.  The Jabra comes with a great ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) Microphone that is designed to block out noises like a dog barking, or a lawn mower going in the background. This can easily be demonstrated when using a noisy keyboard, the sound of the keystrokes is dramatically reduced using this headset.  Surprising when listing to YouTube music etc the quality is good. The earphones ensure conversations are concise and clear while the microphone must be positioned correctly to ensure this quality. 

Hearing Safety

This is an area often forgotten which maybe become more apparent in years to come as many users try to turn the volume to max and use earphones for full-day use. This is   similar to builders using high power tools. in the past now suffering from hearing loss, The Jabra brand came with a  SafeToneTM 2.0, in hearing protection which consists of PeakStop™ prevents sudden loud audio spikes and IntelliTone™ 2.0 limits overall audio exposure. This type of technology should be mandatory for the future to ensure we are not damaging our future generation’s hearing,

Niggles,

If using the hybrid model to travel to the office, you have to carry a dongle and a spare USB A lead, this is a step backwards from the C charger lead as used in most newer Android phones.  This is to facilitate the docking station which works if the unit is placed in a stationary environment,  Jabra would do well to replace the supplied USB A cable with the modern USB C Cable.

These earphones are not compatible with smartphones coming  with no Bluetooth option which means the dongle has to be plugged into the laptop at all times which is another part of the laptop when on the move,  ( should you require a  Bluetooth option possible look toward the  Engage 75 or Jabra Evolve 2 75  which has multimode allowing 2  Bluetooth  devices connected at the same time, https://techbuzzireland.com/2021/12/08/tech-review-jabra-evolve-2-75/

Warranty

This comes with a 2-year warranty with the option to replace the battery if required at a later stage. This is great to see on a quality product.

Conclusion:

The Jabra Engage 55   is a headset that out of the box works well with no technical setup required while has advanced options for the firmware via the free Jabra direct software. The key features in terms of being lightweight, excellent range and call security are inbuilt also. This has the often-forgotten hearing safety built-in without any deterioration to the audio of the unit. ANC works well to reduce unwanted back noise to ensure superior quality calls. There are slight personal niggles on the cables supplied but just personal choice and do not affect the operation of the unit. Again, the unit is not designed for Bluetooth products, but Jabra has many other products that work in this area. The future proof in terms of the option to upgrade the firmware and, warranty, battery replacement is excellent.
