Review – The EATON i-on Compact security system.#Security #Tech #Eaton

The i-on Compact kits came with a variety of devices in a single box for starter-level security residential and small commercial properties The installation comes with a control panel and batteries included for each device.  The instructions are clear in that the unit must be installed and maintained by qualified service personnel. Most of the installation required limited knowledge with the use of wireless technology but does require to be connected to the mains which have the potential of electric shock.

Control unit:

The control unit is the central component of the alarm system. Inside, it contains the processing unit, power supply and standby battery, which keeps the alarm system operational during a temporary power failure.  The module is a wireless intruder panel with built-in keypad that can allow for 20 radio zones.

Passive infra-red (PIR) motion detectors:

The kit comes with Three passive infra-red (PIR) which are fitted to a wall or corner of a room which detects movements or body heat within a fan-shaped area up to 12 meters in radius

Pet-friendly

If the intention is to have the PIR in a place where a pet may be present, the pet-tolerant motion sensors are strongly recommended as they ignore movement low to the ground and are available by selecting the option with a “PT” on the end. Suitable for animals up to 25kg.

Siren:

The Siren is an external siren and with a strobe unit design.  Radio communications are used between the siren and the control unit, which means that no fixed wiring between the two is needed. The external siren  can be viewed as a visible deterrent with a 100dB sound output in the event of an alarm trigger,This has to be installed within the radio range of the control unit/expander (max 500m in free space).

Two-way key fob

The key fob is used for set / unsetting the system or provides feedback on the status of the system if set on exit etc the keyfobs can be programmed to enabling devices to be controlled locally; e.g. garage doors that can be opened and lights switched on.

Installation:

The installation required the connection to the Mains network to the unit which as stated in the manual required to be installed and maintained by qualified service personnel. The kit is supplied with excellent instructions for each of the components to install, the location of each item is a key consideration prior to actual installation with a site survey recommended.

Optional extras.

Additional devices can also be added to the kits including IR Barriers for perimeter detection and Camera’s to provide visual verification of alarm events.

Overall.

The Kit comes complete with all the necessary parts to provide standard residential installation. Most of the installation can be done by a handy DIY person familiar with following instructions, drilling but may require expertise of an electrician to establish the mains power connection on type of cable used, fuses, hazards etc. The Kit while advised easy to install does take time in terms of location of units, setting up etc. This cost of the unit is affordable to get a quality brand of alarm system into a property without the need for hard wiring of cables throughout.  Advanced features can be added in terms of additional camera can be connected or connected to the cloud to manage remotely with a mobile app available to monitor remotely. If the intention is to use where a pet is around the pet-tolerant motion sensors are strongly recommended.

The Modius headset looks to transform weight loss via a different method. We have been taught make sure calories in are less than calories out which works for weight loss, we have been advised eat less, exercise more and good sleep.  This does not appear to be working as in Ireland and the UK, we have a population of 37% overweight and a further 23% obese.  Verdict

The statistics of weight gain is this country is getting unhealthier with overweight and obesity increasing. The Modius used a different approach using electrical pulse which is a real positive as the current beliefs do not appear to be working, Setup and use are easy with minimum skills required, the effort in use is minimum.

The unit does not promote exercise but if weight loss, (Eat less) can be achieved then the feel-good factor of doing exercise and sleep should follow. This has been used for a few weeks for 60 minutes on various power levels. The first observation was making you feel fuller, quicker was very noticeable, typically on finishing a dinner there is always room for more.  This has resulted in been full allot quicker, this may be a placebo effect of using the Modius but is a definite reaction to using the Modius.(Jim himself felt no change after using it) This product is not cheap as falls into the medial category but having for 45 days, risk-free. (get your money back) gives you the option to try out. If losing weight is your thing, with other options/diet not working this is an alternative approach that I have noticed worked for me in terms of makes you feel fuller, quicker.

Setup:

Setup is easy, connect the Roku Express to you TV via the supplied HDMI cable connect to your Wi-Fi and you’re ready to go.  When you enter details into the unit email address etc this can be slow via the remote control, a suggestion would be to get a wireless keyboard connected. The unit required an account set up which can be done on your laptop etc. This setup required a billing details setup e.g. CC or PayPal account. this is one of my only niggles of this unit.  Once set up with a Pin option to prevent others you can use as normal. Adding other channels or e.g. Spotify is easy, Spotify can be set up for a different user with their unique details/account. This can be set up via their smartphone and allows them to control the music, volume etc directly from there phone.

The unit looks basic and simple, setup is easy (slight niggle on having to use a CC / Pay pal account) There is no mention of the specification of Roku Express in terms of processor, ram etc but works smoothly with limited lag.  The cost of the unit is surprisingly reasonable for the option in terms of channels, movies etc with the option of adding subscriptions to the box. This is perfect for a spare room, extra TV to get an alternative choice of viewing that works at a reasonable cost.  This is a first-rate streamer that allows an enormous variety of TV streaming options with a reasonable cost and easy to use and setup.

Quality:

The video is listed as HD 1920*1080P which give a good picture when stationary in a well-lit room, when using the camera outdoors on a belt with fast motion in a dark or dusk environment can involve a blurry video while when stationary or slow movements the quality is improved.  Overall the camera is easy to use, set up with a multitude of functionality that won’t break the bank with acceptable video in well-lit areas.

Review – The One Plus 7, First class at reasonable money. #OnePlus7 #Tech

The One plus 7 comes with a striking white and red box with the 7 logo clearly displayed, the red team continues to the charging cable supplied. This smartphone is a Mirror gray reflective with a gloss finish, this has an Aluminium frame with a comfortable feel and balance. The 6.41 inch model has a curved glass panel weighing in at 182 g. The unit is not listed as certified IP rating water or dust resistance, while made of Gorilla glass.

This lack of IP rating may be due to cost associated for the manufacturer keeping the cost down. One plus phones originally started in 2013 and are listed as a premium smartphone, the company initially sold only via invite system. These can now be purchased direct from Oneplus or via the main networks. This model is a dual sim allowing 2 sim cards in the unit, this allows the use of a private sim card and a work number or the option to use a local number outside of Europe when roaming.

The older Oneplus phones came with excellent specification build sturdy often let down by a poor camera, this model with a 48Mp camera has supersedes many of the premium phones given excellent footage. The design of the camera has notched design, this protrudes from the back of the phone which can look a bit out of place. Once a camera casing has been fitted the camera looks ok with the case taking any knocks or bangs. The result of this design using Sony sensors has resulted in excellent quality backed up by abundance of software to boost the picture.

Unlock Options • In-display Fingerprint • Face Unlock The fingerprint unlock option worked efficiently, this was instant to touch and unlocking the phone. The face unlocks took longer to get used to but worked.

Warranty The OnePlus phones come with one (1) year which is a disappointment for a quality brand and product.

Conclusion The common trend of One plus continues in the high specification at a reasonably price, the speed of the smart phone is a noticeable difference to many manufacturers, the Snapdragon 855 with the 8GB ram with the ram boost ensured this is fast and smooth in operations. The previous one plus phones theme of build solid (taking a knock or two) continues, with the Gorilla® Glass (while not IP rated) this model has a tendency to leave finger marks on the glass panel but is comfortable to hold and solid in one hand. The screen gave excellent video quality watching YouTube / Netflix.

I have used many of the One plus phones in the past, often better know by techies which want good quality and at reasonable price. The super-fast speed and display quality has an impressive gaming experience. Oneplus have focused on one or two models giving excellent quality, great specification with a comfortable feel. This is a smartphone highly recommended having used their phones in the past, this is a product that is first-class at a reasonable price.

Review – Jabra Elite Active 45e. #Jabra #EliteActive45e #earphones

The Jabra Elite Active 45e came in the standard Jabra box with key features clearly displayed on the box. This highlights the wireless music, calls, sport and waterproof. This had voice assistant enabled. The superior sound was highlighted in various places on the packaging, with the suggestion gained from 150 years’ experience.  The earphones felt solid, robust with no additional ear gel to lose on a busy workout. The buttons had larger buttons as compared to other Jabra products. The headset cable was strong and solid.

Waterproof.

The Jabra Elite Active 45e Wireless are IP67 rated which means they are completely dust tight and can be submerged up to 1 metre in water for 30 minutes. This, in theory, would mean you could use the earphones in the shower, but I would not recommend not having tested.

 

Setup

The Setup is standard, turn on the earphones via the multi-function button and the Jabra voice prompt advised to turn on Bluetooth on your phone and select. This took less than a minute. This gave the functionality to pause music, turn the volume up and down on the phone when listening to music.

The button on the earphone is large in comparison to many other earphones used, ensuring those with big fingers can easily make changes as required.

The app: Jabra sound+

The Jabra sound+ app got a rating of 3 out of 5 on the play store. the app, while not required for basic use, has a variety of great features. The app is compatible with most of the Jabra range Jabra Elite 45e, 65e, 65t, 85h, Active 45e, Active 65t and Jabra Evolve 65e, 65t The app allows you to set up configurations for each area or adjust your audio using the 5-band equalizer.
The voice assistance was set up for Amazon Alexa. (you can use Google, Siri also) this allowed one button pressed on the earphones to ask all the usual question of Alexa whether in the home or out and about. This worked great. (after a little setup variation) but will not allow music to be played via the free Spotify version, this required the subscription version. (This is not a Jabra query rather Amazon Alexa) Jim has a review of the App HERE with the Jabra 85h

Find my Jabra, Locate by sound

This app feature allows find the last location on the connection of the Jabra, then you can use “Locate by sound” This is a great cool feature saving time looking for them, whether left in a coat pocket. the back of the couch or n the office.

Sports earphones.

The design of the earphone has earwigs and ear hooks for a secure fit, this ensures if running or under harsh conditions, the earwigs help keep them in place over and in your ear preventing them falling out. The design also incorporates Open ear design which allows external sounds to be heard. This ensures you are aware of the external environment, This is listed as a Safety feature, for those on roads etc this is highlighted on the cover “Lets in ambient Sound “This should be compulsory for many cycles on our roads which can be oblivious to their surroundings,

 

Niggles

There are few niggles for these earphones while minor in that they don’t come with the newer c charger lead (instead the older USB-A to Micro-USB cable.) resulting in having to carry different charger cables. The earphones while strong and sturdy don’t come with a protective case which would be a nice to have.

 

Jabra Elite Active 45e vs Jabra Elite 45e

Jabra Elite Active 45e   is larger than the previously reviews Jabra Elite 45e and is slightly heavier at 29g and comes with an abundance of technology.Both have excellent build and audio quality with the Elite Active a better battery life.  The Elite Active 45e has up to 9 hours of battery life on a single charge, and 12 days of standby time

Verdict:

The Jabra is always a favourite from there 150 years of experience, the Jabra Elite Active 45e works as earphones are supposed to with the excellent build quality and waterproof and a warranty to go with it. The visual view of these earphones may be a personal choice but slightly bulkier and heavier than the others in the Jabra range.

These earphones do not fall out when used in challenging environments, nor have earbuds that can fall out after constant use. The design has big buttons, allowing the charger easily fitted without having to remove fiddle clips to insert. The battery life is good at 9 hours. The 2-microphone technology improved audio quality (wind-noise reduction on calls) to the person on the other end of the call even when used in a noisy environment.  The audio as expected can be adjusted to the situation allowing a customised audio experience via the 5-band equalizer. Overall the Jabra brand stands out for quality, a dedicated Alexa button ensures Jabra is keeping with the latest technology in functionally and audio quality. If looking for a set of quality earphones within this price range using the Jabra Elite Active 45e is an excellent choice.

HyperX Cloud Alpha Pro Gaming headsets has a double chamber driver designed to give clearer and reduce disturbance as they reduce the noise. The audio was had precise sounding during gameplay when things are going on in a game. They design and feel was comfortable after hours of use attributed to the red memory foam in the headband and also in the leather ear cushions. The dual chamber drivers gave a clearer smoother sound as they control a high, mid and low tempo of the bass in both gameplay and also just listening to music. The headset frame is made of aluminium where many others tested have been  made with weaker plastic, which wears down in time,  The  design of the aluminium frame headset  is a lot more durable and in certain cases, a lot of gamers would really call out for these as most gaming sets could fall or wear over time especially pro gaming competitors. The detachable cables are also braided which gives it that extra protection and a feel of quality and strength. The detachable cord also has a volume wheel and a switch for the detachable noise-cancellation microphone so if you want to talk to someone in the room instead of taking the mic out the user can just flick the switch to turn the mic on and off. This headset is great for many reasons as it is compatible with PC, PS4, Xbox One and also any device with an AUX cord attachment like a phone or iPod. The microphone works on a phone for possible office work and does not have flashy lights distracting others around.

The headset is not distracting rather functional with a style and mat shiny red sprayed aluminium frame along with the black leather makes them an eye-catching headset which a classic old-style gamer would love. This HyperX Cloud Alpha Pro Gaming Headset is a premium rated headset which is comfortable after hours of demanding use, The headset is  full of handy features, for example, having an AUX cord so they can also be used in any sort of computer, console, and phone/iPod, they also have a volume wheel on the cord to higher and lower volume, a switch on the cord also to turn the mic on and off. Very high-quality frame made from aluminium along with a braided cable and comfortable leather with memory foam in the headband and ear covers reducing disturbing sounds and creating comfort. I have got a possible reaction from a variety of gamers on the look and feel of the handset.

This model stood out with pro gamer when streaming on the game and talking to his other gamers. They are clear when speaking through the mic and also a noise reduction mic. The headset is high quality and long lasting headset reasonable price under € 100  with the primary option for any type of gamer but could be used in an office environment. This is a recommended headset with a primary comfort feel after hours of use with excellent audio quality.

Review – The HyperX SAVAGE EXO SSD (SHSX100/480G) Portable Solid-State Drive #HyperX #SSD

The first observation on the HyperX was the weight of the drive at 54 grams,  this was lighter than expected with the Kingston logo on the unit, the 3-year warranty was clearly displayed on the packaging. The unit came with 2 cables allowing connection to a variety of devices, gaming or Windows and Mac, the Memory Storage Capacity came as 480 GB.  The box highlighted the 3D NAND technology to deliver SSD speeds more reliably which is a fundamental requirement for speed of data.

Setup and use:

The setup was minimal, plug the cable into the device and the unit worked there were no major software downloads or configuration setups on devices.

The speed was remarkable faster than standard USB drives used in the past (manufactures claim Slash load times with a drive that’s up to 20% faster than today’s game systems¹.) A test carried out to copy 20 Gb of data from a device to this Solid-State Drive and another, drive about 6 months old show a remarkable difference in copy time.

This is the result of no moving parts within the device.  Overall nothing exciting with a portable Solid-State Drive but the upgrade in speed is great with Kingston’s Flash Memory (World’s largest independent manufacturer of memory products) to ensure quality and durability from a recognised brand. This is a bit more lavish than a  typical portable  hard drives but the speed and reliable is money well spent especially in the gaming areas,
