Evernote announces Home for iOS and Android. #Evernote

Following the launch of Home for desktop and web earlier in the year,  Evernote, the productivity app that lets users remember everything and accomplish anything, is now rolling out this new feature for iOS and Android (OS 10 and up).

Home is a one-stop dashboard that gives users immediate access to their most recent and relevant information from one convenient location. Important notes, tags and shortcuts are instantly available and neatly organised upon opening the app, making Home the fastest way to get to things that matter.

As well as iOS and Android, Evernote Home is available to Mac, Windows and Evernote Web customers. iPhone and iPad users can get home today by updating their Evernote app from the iOS App Store.  It will be rolling out through the Google Play Store over the next few weeks.

About Home:

Home provides users with more than one way to organise their content, giving them the freedom to shape their Evernote experience and see the information they want, the way they want it. This new feature will enable users to work faster and stay focussed, helping them to keep on top of everything without feeling overwhelmed.

When opening Home, Evernote Basic and Premium users will find three default widgets:

  • Notes: Users can select “Recent” notes to quickly pick up where they left off with any project; or choose “Suggested” notes and let Evernote’s powerful AI surface the content needed
  • Scratch Pad: Users can stay in the zone by jotting down quick notes on Home’s scratch pad. Notes can be left there forever, erased or converted into a note at any time.
  • Recently captured: This widget shows users all the rich content saved recently, taking users straight to their web clips, images, documents, audio and emails.

Evernote Premium and Business subscription users also have access to widgets for Notebooks, Pinned Note, Tags and Shortcuts as well as the ability to customise their home background image to fit their personal style. The combination of these widgets provides a powerful way for Evernote users to see their content and manage it all.

New to Ireland? These Are the Best Mobile Apps to Download

New to Ireland? You’re in for a treat. The country has more pubs than people (only a slight exaggeration!), the countryside is absolutely stunning (there’s a reason why Hollywood often chooses the Emerald Isle), and its music scene is known worldwide.

When you’re brand new to the country, it can be a little overwhelming. Sensory overload aplenty. But don’t worry, there’s an app for that. Or a bunch of them, anyway. These are the best mobile apps to download if you’re planning a trip to the Land of Saints and Scholars.

Why Apps Rule in Ireland (Answer: Mobile Penetration)

You may be wondering why we’re going down the app route, why we’re so confident it’s the best way to get embedded in the Irish way of life. The answer is mobile penetration. According to Statista, almost 80% of people in the country use a smartphone.

This means the Irish use apps for everything, whether it’s playing Candy Crush on the commute, regulating the temperature of their homes when they’re not even there, or looking for online casinos that can be played on mobile to indulge in games that are available on mobile phones, like Slots, Video Poker, Blackjack or Baccarat (the luck of the Irish and everything!). With that said, here are our favourite’s.

How to Travel

Ireland has a fantastic public travel system. There are several apps that will help you navigate it:

Dublin Bus. The easiest way to travel through Dublin is by using public transportation, with the bus system being fantastic. This app will tell you where the nearest stop is, in addition to exact bus times tracked by GPS.

Free Now. This is a taxi app for Dublin, perfect for those late nights when you just want to get home ASAP. ‘Nuff said.

Dublin Bikes App. If you’re over 14 years of age, use this app to hire a bike whenever you want. It’s a perfect alternative for your daily commute or a tour around the city.

Lovin.Ie (Foodies Rejoice!)

Anyone who has a smartphone probably has a food app in there somewhere. For Ireland, the Lovin.ie app is the essential tool for foodies. It has so many fantastic restaurants for you to discover and pig out in! Whether you want traditional Irish grub or something that has a little bit of a modern twist, this app will help you find it.

Met Eireann (Irish Weather = Changeable)

You take a look outside in the morning, pure sun. Perfect. Just some jeans and a t-shirt, leave that umbrella at home. Or have you just made a huge mistake? As most Irish people will tell you, the weather can change in an instant. It can look like the perfect summer’s day one minute, and the next it’s like you’re in the middle of a Game of Thrones winter.

Discovering the Capital

Even though it’s a relatively small city, Dublin has a lot to offer. It’s easy to get lost. These apps will help you discover the city:

Dublin Event Guide. Whether it’s music festivals or sporting events, this app will give you a very good overview of what’s happening in Dublin.

Dublin Literary Walking Tour. Ireland has a multitude of literary powerhouses, like Oscar Wilde and James Joyce. This app will guide you through their lives in Dublin, taking you right to the heart of their journeys.

Dublin Map and Walks. Only available on iOS, so those of you who are Apple fans, you’re in luck. This app will give you some excellent self-guided walking routes. The ‘Hidden Gems’ section is particularly useful, as it gives you tips for things even locals aren’t aware of!

Huggnote (Show Family You Care, the Irish Way!)

Okay, our last one won’t help you in Ireland necessarily, but it’s a staff favourite with a genuine Irish slant. The last year hasn’t been easy for a lot of us, especially if family members don’t live close by.

To help bring people closer together, Jacqui and Perry Meskell, two sisters from Limerick, invented Huggnote. It’s an app that allows you to send a virtual hug through music, giving a message of love and comfort. Whether it’s a ‘good luck’ before a job interview, or just to say you care, it’s an easy way to make someone’s day. The company also has some great St. Paddy’s Day music as well, ensuring the tracks available don’t lose their Irish origin!

If you are new in Ireland or thinking of heading that way any time soon, these apps really are a nice helping hand and can bright up your time there. Good luck.

Quick Checkers: Stunning features and germane winning strategies

Checkers, popularly referred to as draughts in the U.K, is a beloved board game that transcends time.

Believed to have been invented thousands of years ago, checkers is still as popular, if not more popular than when it was first played in the ancient city of Ur. Over the years, a number of variations have emerged in different parts of the world, with Spanish Draughts, Brazilian Checkers, Russian Checkers and Turkish Dama being some of the most popular.

Although traditionally played 1v1 on actual tabletops, checkers can in the modern day be played anywhere, at any time thanks to apps such as Quick Checkers—a free online checkers game available on iOS and Android devices.

What are some of the app’s impressive features?

Test your skills against random players

Unlike some pastimes which can be dross and unproductive, checkers is actually efficient when it comes to enhancing memory recall and boosting concentration skills. Do you consider yourself the ultimate checkers master? Then prove your worth against random gifted players from all over the world.

Different variations and real world locations

Different variations of checkers are played in different parts of the world.

It is for this reason that Quick Checkers supports multiple variations such as American Checkers/ English Draughts, International Checkers, Spanish Draughts, Brazilian Checkers, Russian Checkers and Turkish Dama—in an effort to accommodate a diverse range of players. Other than that, players can also compete in coveted real world locations such as New York, Paris, London, Amsterdam and Rio de Janeiro, provided they level up and earn experience in order to be granted access.

Amazing graphics and competitive ranking system

Quick Checkers not only has amazing graphics but also comes with a swift in-game chat system that conveniently allows you to communicate with friends and other players. Besides that, the competitive ranking system, comprising of a National and Global ranking, enables you to monitor your performances compared to other players from your region and around the globe respectively.

Here are a few of the relevant winning strategies:

Dominate the centre and advance en masse

One of the most widely made mistakes in checkers is positioning pieces on the edges at the start of a game in an effort to avoid capture. This isn’t an appropriate strategy, as it will only limit your options. Therefore, the most recommended strategy would be to place your checkers pieces at the centre of the board whilst advancing en masse.

Dominating the centre of the board will limit your opponent’s movement and increase your chances of capturing, while advancing en masse will ensure that you receive support from your surrounding checkers pieces.

Be the first to reach the king row

Kings are the most prestigious pieces in checkers, as they are permitted to perform a host of additional moves that always come in handy. As such, you should always endeavour to get to the king row first—ahead of your opponent—in order to get promoted.

It goes without saying that the more Kings your acquire, the higher your chances of capturing and winning the game.

Hold your king row in place

As you endeavour to acquire as many Kinged pieces as you can, remember to keep your king row intact for as long as deem fit. Preventing your opponent from getting Kinged pieces will restrict their options of movement and capturing, heavily limiting their strength.

As you apply these strategies, also remember to initiate forced moves, but only if they work in your favour.

Is Your Weather App Equipped With These 5 Important Features? #Weather #Apps #Climacell

The modern-day weather app should not only be able to tell the weather, but it also needs to help us make decisions. It needs to have features that can make our lives a little easier and stress-free. If you are using a weather app, check if it has these 5 amazing (and necessary) features. If not, maybe it is time to get an upgrade.

#1 Regular weather updates

The most important feature that a weather app needs to have is the ability to provide regular weather updates. These updates are often the main reason why you are installing the app in the first place. You will probably plan for the day based on these updates.

A perfect weather app is the one that keeps you posted on all sorts of weather-related information. It should provide you with the latest temperature, humidity, precipitation rate, wind speed, and other weather-related information for your locality. Plus, the app should also be able to fetch weather from other areas of the country, as well as different parts of the world. ClimaCell is an app that does a fine job here with its improved radar system. This new weather radar is a feature that sets the app apart from its competitors.

#2 Accurate forecasts

Keeping you updated on the latest developments in your local weather is a job that every weather app must do without any fail. Besides this, it is also expected that the app will provide you with accurate forecasts. Every good weather app has its own way of retrieving weather data and analyzing it. Hence, based on this data analysis, the apps are able to predict the weather conditions for the upcoming weeks.

Of course, it will be foolish to think that the predictions will be accurate down to the last decimal point. However, a well-developed weather app will at least give you a good idea as to what the weather might be like in the upcoming days or weeks. Using the right local weather API tool can greatly improve the accuracy of these forecasts. It will never fail to surprise you with its precision, and it will not let you get caught in an unexpected rainstorm.

#3 Hourly weather breakdowns

We no longer plan by the day, and rather by the hour. In a day, we can go from attending classes or office to visiting someone in another state or city, and then coming back home again. Our lives are very busy nowadays, and in order to plan each action or decision, we need hourly weather breakdowns.

These breakdowns are somewhat like the weather forecasts, except instead of a weeklong prediction, we are presented with a breakdown of the weather on an hour-by-hour basis. It could be scorching hot in the morning, a little windy at noon, raining in the evening, and freezing cold at night – we never know. Hourly weather breakdowns can help us be aware of any unforeseen changes in the weather, and then allow us to plan or adjust our plans accordingly.

#4 AQI data

The air quality index (AQI) is a very important measure. It helps us realize the quality of the air around us. Give how the air around us is drastically deteriorating, we should be more aware of the air that we are breathing.

The air quality index of a place is determined based on the concentration of certain particles present in our air. When the normal air is exposed to high levels of pollutants, the AQI increases. Generally, an AQI reading from 0-50 is considered good, and 50-100 is considered moderate. These are normal conditions basically. However, from this point onwards, the higher the AQI climbs, the worse the air gets. Sometimes, AQI readings will reach levels over 200. These conditions are very bad for our health and we need to prepare accordingly for these situations.

Your weather app should give you insights into the AQI as well. By being aware of the conditions in your area, you can take necessary precautions before heading outside.

#5 Weather intelligence

Weather intelligence is a technique by which apps can give you certain suggestions, based on the weather data. This is a technology that uses artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analysis to better understand the weather conditions and their impact on us.

A modern weather app should be intelligent. It should be able to tell you what to do, and how you can benefit from it. For instance, assume that you are a farmer and the temperature is somewhat warm today. The app will tell you the exact temperature, precipitation rate, humidity, etc. The weather intelligence report from the app, on the other hand, will pass suggestions like how much water should you give to your crops or plants today, when should you give the water, whether or not you should apply fertilizer of any sort, and so on. Simply put, weather intelligence helps you to make decisions that can otherwise be difficult to make.

Irish Software Engineers Adopt Latest Tools To Streamline App Development

Irish software engineers are adopting the latest tools to streamline web app development. According to recent reports, over 75% of digital agencies identify poor app design as one of their most significant weaknesses. With growing demand throughout the industry, it is essential to improve design and development procedures. Importantly, this starts with investing in the right resources. As a software development enterprise manager, you need to integrate the latest innovative tools to streamline your web app development. This way, you can build professional, high functioning applications for your clients. Read on to learn about the latest tools Irish software engineers are adopting to streamline web app development.

Web Development Frameworks

First, many software engineering firms in Ireland are adopting web development frameworks to streamline their development procedures. Typically, these tools serve as the starting point to develop dynamic web applications. With many frameworks, you can easily create front-end applications without complex plugins. This is because these tools often include well-designed templates, MVC architecture, and code generation features. In addition, many expressions are similar to code snippets. For example, they are commonly enclosed within brackets and do not use any loops or conditional statements. Furthermore, many web development frameworks include integrated tutorials or have published online courses. With these resources, you can efficiently learn how to use them. Definitely, Irish programmers are using web frameworks to simplify the build process.

Centralized Repositories

In addition, Irish development professionals are also installing centralized repositories to streamline their web application developments. For example, Golang development teams are increasingly integrating GoProxy. Notably, these public centralized repositories are available to developers across the globe. Additionally, you can use these tools to host your open-source Go modules. Often, these are available in publicly accessible version control system (VCS) project repositories. Many of these, such as JFrog GoCenter are available to Golang developers for free. Of course, many developers around the world are learning Golang for its simple syntax and these increasingly accessible resources. Undoubtedly, Irish developers are installing centralized repositories to streamline module hosting.

Next, application development enterprises in Ireland are also using advanced code editors to increase coding efficiency. Many code editors include well-designed features and quick, high-performing user interfaces. For example, many of these systems can leverage various keyboard shortcuts. Indeed, this allows developers to perform simultaneous editing. Often, you can make the same changes to multiple selected areas at once. In addition, these editors allow you to navigate to your files, symbols, and lines with ease. When you’re spending full work days using a code editor, shaving seconds off your basic programming procedures adds up. For this improved efficiency, Irish developers are implementing advanced code editor tech to make working a happier and healthier experience.

Frontend & Backend Tools

Moreover, Irish web app developers also use frontend and backend tools. Many backend tools include frameworks, database management systems, and API collaboration platforms. These innovative tools support some of the top web design trends for success. Importantly, many databases can provide multi-user access, easy set up procedures, and little maintenance. In addition, API collaboration platforms are designed to streamline communication, so you can create APIs faster. On the other hand, many developers use front end tools to streamline their programming processes. For example, some frameworks use JSX, which allows you to quote HTML and tag syntax to render sub components. Many frontend tools are also built with low-code interfaces for a more intuitive drag and drop interface.

Prototyping Tools

Furthermore, software engineering agencies in Ireland are also using prototyping tools for their web app development projects. These are great tools to improve customer interaction and collaboration across your UI and UX design teams. For example, some high-fidelity prototyping tools include multi-player editing, easy sharing, and inline commenting features to boost collaboration. In addition, many components are reusable, so your team can get client approval faster. Of course, the best prototyping tools offer preview modes as well. With many low-code options available, this is a great solution to increase efficiency on your design teams. In short, many Irish developers are adopting prototyping tools, especially for UX and UI design techniques.

Irish software engineers are adopting the latest tools to streamline web app development. First, web development frameworks are an essential starting point for any web application. Next, code editors are great resources to increase programming efficiency. In addition, centralized repositories are often easily accessible, especially for Golang teams. Moreover, frontend and backend tools are key building blocks for any project. Furthermore, install a prototyping tool to increase your design team’s efficiency. Consider these points to learn about the latest tools Irish software engineers are adopting to streamline web app development.

United Nations launches new game and animated film to mark World Education Day. #ResetEarth

Reset Earth’ is an innovative educational platform for adolescents about the fundamental role of the ozone layer in protecting the planet. The project launches on World Education Day (January 24th) with a virtual world premiere of the original animation film that explores options for collective positive action here. The film’s plot continues in a challenging mobile game for Android and IOS (February 10th). The platform is initiated by United Nations Ozone Secretariat to sustain the protection of the ozone layer through the sensitisation and engagement of Gen Z.

Ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) have been widely used throughout the 20th century, mostly for refrigeration, in air conditioners and aerosol sprays. ODSs threaten the earth’s upper atmosphere, drive up temperatures and account for close to 11 per cent of total warming emissions to date. Since the 1980s, the international community has acted to protect the ozone layer by banning or strictly restricting the use and production of such super greenhouse effect gases. Consequently, the Antarctic ozone is expected to close by the 2060s (without action, it might have been 40 per cent larger by now) and other regions will return to 1980s values even earlier.

Meg Seki, Acting Executive Secretary of the Ozone Secretariat, said, “The protection of the ozone layer cannot be considered a done deal. It must be a continuous effort by us and by future generations. If our children learn about the grim consequences of a ruined ozone layer through a fantasy cartoon and game app, they will be aware of its importance and protect it.”

Reset Earth begins a year-long education initiative by the Secretariat to raise awareness and inspire action among adolescents and parents about global ozone protection. Immersive, educational and thought-provoking, Reset Earth conveys a positive message around what can be achieved through collective action and cultivates a sense of environmental responsibility and ownership amongst the youth.

The Reset Earth animation film is set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic world in 2084, where the ozone layer has been completely ruined and human life is under threat from an unstoppable virus called “The Grow”. It is the story of three teenagers who team up in an epic time-travel adventure to save the planet and what’s left of human life. Their mission is to find out what caused the “The Grow”. They travel back to critical historical moments in the story of the mysterious ‘ozone layer”, essential to stopping the virus, and learning as they go about the fundamental role it plays in protecting the health wellbeing of the planet. To save the ozone layer, they must jump back in time to ensure the signing of the Montreal Protocol agreement.

The Reset Earth mobile game is a single player platform game, combining a retro graphics style and hand-drawn artwork and aligned with the film’s storyline. Players – whether adolescent gamers or their parents – switch between characters and utilise their unique abilities throughout four levels of the game. Through unlocking puzzles, players learn about environmental history and the science of protecting the planet.
