Review – Nokia Steel 36mm Activity and Sleep Watch. #Nokia #NokiaSteel #NokiaHealth

Formerly Withings, We are aware that Nokia purchased the company and now have a line of health/fitness products. Given this has been reviewed hundreds of times under the Withings brand here is my take on the Nokia Steel which I have been wearing a couple of weeks now..I like it.

Firstly I must admit I always thought the watch looked nice, its slim elegant and has a timeless look but at the time I was not so hype on wearables, I do have several and a big collection of watches but one thing I longed for,for so many years was a watch with simply “Nokia” on it.. It took years for it to happen but that day finally came a few weeks ago and I can wait to try the next model soon…

https://twitter.com/techbuzzireland/status/883724039189139456

Firstly.. This is not a fully fledged smartwatch. Its an activity and sleep tracker and at the time there was multiple people complaining about the old version of the app so I can’t comment on that but can comment on their updated app which I have used to track my activities which for me worked perfectly fine delivering my daily updates on time every time and giving me my readout, People will say that such readouts are not 100% accurate and I tend to agree to an extent on comparing to my MOTO 360 for example this gave me step counts that you couldn’t make up even on a quite day here in the office it had questionable results.. The Nokia Steel though gave me what I would call realistic measures..

Has anything changed since apart from the name, Well apart for app features NO. And then the only notable change is the Nokia Branding of course. Questions have been asked why use the typface they did rather than the actual logo we all love and know so well. Perhaps this is something they will consider going forward…

Features

Activity tracking: steps, distance, swim (water resistant to 5 ATM), running and calories burned.

– Sleep monitoring: sleep cycle analysis (light and deep sleep) and silent alarm.

– Automatic synchronization: Follow your data on your smartphone.

– Stainless steel case with silicone strap.

– No charging: battery lasts up to 8 months.

Does it do what it says on the tin?

For me it did anyway, Pairing the watch at first was a bit trouble some taking several attempts and since  I have changed phone between now and the first day I had it that issue was present,However if you come across this just keep the watch and device close to each other and if there is an issue toggle your bluetooth on and off and ensure location is on, Nokia do not track this. There is a reset key on the back, Again if you swap devices you just use the reset key provided to wake the watch and it will all go fine from there just follow the onscreen instructions on the app itself.

Because the watch has no buttons, keys or winders several asked me when the seen  it “How on earth do you change the time etc etc.. Again you do it on the app its fun actually moving the dials from your smartphone and watch it happen in from of you. You just need to set all hands to ZERO and the magic happens.

Build quality

For me its small, smaller than what I typically wear with watches I have around 20 and all are big faced ones. This however was probably an eye opener for me as from wearing this I could feel the difference and historically I take my watch off going to bed, With this I didnt even know it was there after wearing it a few hours this is how light and thin it is. The strap also is very thin for me but again got over this but had this constant worry if the strap would break as it’s typically the first thing that goes for me,the strap has stood the test of time so far and is all well, its flexible and robust. I have broken several new watch straps within days of purchase and its cost me.. I would like to see a thicker strap and bigger face or give options for the customer as we all are made in different sizes and shapes

Would this suit anyone?

Well yes and no it depends on what your needs are and being honest as I said earlier I am not smartwatch mad but want to give whats out there a better chance and like many things I need a kick in the ass when it comes to things and health is one of them, With now sporting a watch with NOKIA on it this was my kick because I wear it,use it and set goals and it does plenty for me,perhaps I would have prefered some more on it but this is what I have been using and it works for me and i take note of my daily activity etc. Perhaps that I am a long time Nokia fan it might sound a bit biased but again as mentioned its something I longed for and now its hear but then again I am brand conscious, there is multiple offerings out there that can do what this does but I like my Nokia phones and just like people like fitbit for example or similar and would not choose another product over it because of the brand. For what it does it does it well and harmoniously just like other similar products would do and for me its a perfect match minus the offerings on the Steel HR which I would like going forward.

What I like about the Nokia Steel.

Thin, Sleek,Looks well,Simple dials and not cluttered. Solid build quality, NO CHARGING believe me this is great not having to worry about charging daily. Battery life is said to be 6 months but obviously I can’t verify yet. Daily reminders..You can pick and chose these..

What I didnt like.

No date on it,Small face,Perhaps the Nokia logo but would love to see their own one on it.. These trade offs are nitpicking at best but just suggestions on my time with it and what others have said and perhaps a few more colours would be nice to broaden its appeal and get people wearing such products with a simple form and functionality..

Not available in Ireland yet it you can pick it up HERE

Review – Saturn 10 Pro. Power users look away, you get what you pay for. #Tablets

Tablets are popular and actually beginning to get good and can in some cases replace laptops, this is of course due to the user and their needs and the tides have turned for laptops with and people opting for a bigger tablet instead. I have a few tablets myself and of course my big phones which in most cases keep me away from my laptop.. So like phones we  have specs and prices to consider with the iPad being continually been pushed and touted the best there is BUT there  is other options and remember how locked down iOS is so it’s not for all and Android tablets out there today are just as good and of course we have Surface which again like what Apple offer overpriced in my book.

I like to use a tablet for either travel or just lazing about the house and this tablet with keyboard is something you will love or hate depending on your needs, If you are power user move along now Im going to get that bit out of the way there is just no point in considering this but as the saying goes you get what you pay for and this is true to form here even though you get a keyboard with it which by the way is a good move rather than like others charge an additional hefty fee like Apple or Microsoft would do just to mention AGAIN…

UNBOXING THE SATURN 10 Pro

This tablet would be ideal for those just browsing at home or using social media it’s by no means a workhorse but then again its the price you pay. If you have kids it’s also ideal this is built like a tank to be fair and it has a bit of weight to it too which can be forgiven but kids will manage just fine.

If you are watching media or Netflix for example it would suffice provided you have strong internet so I cant fully state the constant buffering issues I suffered because my internet is woeful its an ongoing issue i am trying to get sorted. Though this proved an issue once again casting from this table to my TV which even this had severe lagging issues but I can’t entirely blame the tablet..

Where i did notice lag was just doing general tasks even typing, the words would finally catch up with my inputs on-screen which was annoying but it was not a constant issue and again depending how many tabs I had open which is on average 8 to 10 which would be things I would use like social media and email.

The keyboard is actually nice to work on albeit some things moved about but I got over it quickly enough and was able to type like a boss after some use on comparison to my person laptop or desktops here at home. The trackpad was a bit on the slow side even after changing the sensitivity settings and no right-click or longpress  like you would find on your standard layout but there is of course other ways to do this which again takes time to become custom to and enjoy the same workflow and speed on your current home set up but overall time heals all shortcomings here.. In some cases found negative repsonses to clicking and found myself using the screen to overcome some of these shortcomings which worked all the time…

The camera and video

OK its dreadful… Yes but for me its not a problem because I am not one of these who like to carry my tablet in the street like a tourist and wave it in the air taking pictures and videos. However this is now becoming a trend you will always see people with their tablets in the air these days and its something to get use to even though it looks ridiculous but that’s how I have always felt about that scenario so don’t take it to heart or personally if you have a tablet in your back you most likely have a phone..

See some samples above along with settings range and judge for yourself.. Again most tablets in fairness fail in this department anyway so its not a dig in itself at the actaul product when you compare to a mobile phone in 2017 and the front facing camera is no better here either with good light comditions you will get a passable photo..

Ports Galore

Its got plenty but nothing comes in the box such as a mini HDMI cable and one highly annoying thing that needs to be wiped out is god dam  MAINS PROPRIETRY CHARGING.. You loose your power lead you are done meaning you need to cough up for a new one this is Android albeit and outdated version like….HOWEVER… You can charge via micro USB so all is not lost but it will be a slower process.. One thing which was nice to see was the standard USB port present which can be handy for some folk..

The Screen is not so bright but will suffice again its down to the price but you can enjoy content on it at a satisfactory level. For a 10.1 inch screen there is plenty of estate to get a decent viewing of whatever you might be at be it You Tube or Netflix for example. One annoying thing to note there is no tap to wake or hit key to wake you will need to tap the power key but its not a huge deal but a tad annoying..

The speaker on the rear is “Just OK” I found it very tinny at most levels but overall its fine you have a headphone socket present so this is another option if you dont want to pee off your family or friends with blaring your own prefrences in a room and with headphones the sound is ok actually..

Overall its a tablet you will love or hate and it is unsual for me to have this conclusion and thats how I feel about it Its got many good points and bad ones too but for the price its not a bad buy to be fair but just dont expect to run heavy games or use it for  multitasking as it will let you down more often than you think but this is down to whats under the hood ( Spec sheet above)  but other than that for the money and if you have kids and just like to browse the web and do social and want something solid this will do the trick and performs quite well at those tasks . What’s an additional bonus here is you get a keyboard with the tablet which comes in cost effectively and not trying to fleece your pockets with an additional purchase like others in the market do.

If you want to pick this up you can buy it now from ASDA

Review -#diskAshur2 – The James Bond of portable USB 3.1 hard drives. #Security #iStorage

Ok it’s a hard disc with a difference – Bond style!

Use a pin to access the drive, lose the pin / or loose the hard disc and no one else can get in either. This is overly simplified but add in speed and array of features. What if Computer / network won’t start, lost your laptop, do you have a backup!

This PIN authenticated Hardware Encrypted drive is available in 500Gb, 1TB, 2TB, in a choice of 4 colours. This review is on the Racing Green model. The size is smaller than expected but sturdy with the usb cable attached to the device. This is great in not having to find a cable each time. (the Diskahur2 usb cable is short so the Diskahur2 must be placed close to the laptop etc.) The unit comes with a strong protective case.

The diskAshur2 is an ultra-secure, PIN authenticated, portable USB 3.1 hard drive with real-time AES 256-bit XTS hardware encryption. This used USB 3.1 giving very fast speeds. The diskAshur2 has a keyboard attached allowing you to enter a unique 7-15-digit PIN. The operating systems including all versions of MS Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Chrome, Thin Clients, Zero Clients and embedded systems.

Compatible with:
PC, Mac, Laptop, Printer, CCTV, Medical, Citrix Ready, Smart Phone, Chromebook, Tablet
Features
➢ USB 3.1 Portable Encrypted Hard Drive
➢ Capacities up to 2TB*
➢ FIPS PUB 197 validated
➢ AES 256-bit XTS hardware encryption – no software required
➢ OS & Platform independent
➢ Employs EDGE* Technology
➢ Available in 4 colours-Phantom Black, Ocean Blue, Fiery Red & Racing Green

This is quite clever, Wear Resistant Epoxy Coated Keypad which is designed so that (as always happens in the movies) the bad guy sees the most worn digits and guesses the combination, this keypad is design not to fade giving an idea of the common digit used in your password.

Super-fast USB 3.1
This has super-fast USB 3.1 data transfer speeds of 148 MBps (Read) and 140 MBps (Write). If your system is an older device the iStorage diskAshur2 is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 ports.

Unattended Auto-Lock Feature
If you set the unattended diskAshur2 to automatically lock after a pre-determined amount of time this will lock requiring the pin to be re-entered preventing any one access to your drive if you pop out for a coffee.

Self-Destruct Feature
Another cool Bond style feature, you can pre-program the diskAshur2 with your own unique Self Destruct PIN which, once implemented, instantly deletes the encryption key, all PINs, data and then creates a new encryption key.

One of the unique and underlying security features of the GDPR compliant diskAshur2 is the dedicated hardware based secure microprocessor (Common Criteria EAL4+ ready), which employs built-in physical protection mechanisms designed to defend against external tamper, bypass attacks and more. Unlike other solutions, the diskAshur2reacts to an automated attack by entering the deadlock frozen state, which renders all such attacks as useless. In plain and simple terms, without the PIN there’s no way in!

Unlike other solutions, the diskAshur2 reacts to an automated attack by entering the deadlock frozen state, which renders all such attacks as useless. In plain and simple terms, without the PIN there’s no way in! General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a regulation by which theEuropean Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Commission intend to strengthen and unify data protection for all individuals within the European Union Those of you in the IT industry / compliance will probably know this already, but if not how does this sound!

Read this – https://istorage-uk.com/general-data-protection/

I am unsure with Brexit if this is still the case but currently, In the UK, under the existing data protection act (DPA), the fines are around £500,000 which may become like GDPR. Any company that works with information relating to EU citizens will have to comply, making it the first global data protection law. Did I mention One of the unique and underlying security features of the diskAshur2 is that it is GDPR compliant diskAshur2

Warranty:
iStorage operates a 36-month return to base warranty on all Flash based products (i.e. datAshur), and a 24-month return to base warranty on all HDD/SSD based products (i.e. diskG, diskAshur, diskAshur DT).

Undecided what model size to use.. See here – https://istorage-uk.com/product-comparison/

I don’t think this is a product that will purchased due to the colours, but rather for business to insure they comply with some legal requirements, the choice is not whether to get an Encrypted Portable Drives rather which one to get in terms of size and features. It may be worth considering current budgets to decide does every sales person on the road need one, every HR person that takes home staff details and the list continues. This may be like the phrase “Nobody ever got fired for choosing IBM” to the diskAshur2. On the colours note if you are like me I do like options than the default that is typical and everyone having the same thing, This for me is an added bonus to have something different even be it colour than everyone else..This is evident for those that know me for my bright flashy mobile phone collection where the standard colour is simply not good enough..

A month on – The Blackberry KEYone. Its got what it takes to win the old fan back. #Blackberry #KEYone

I have been Anti Blackberry some years due to how they left the market here in Ireland but then the Blackberry Passport Silver edition and standard came along and I was admitedly the first to moot it… It is true what they say things look nicer in person than they do on the internet and when BlackBerry sent me the Passport well my opinion changed very rapidy, To this day for me its been one of the best smartphones I used in a long time and I go through alot of them. The passport had its quirky looks and shape which of course meant the screen and the KEYOne has some of its traits and mashed up with the Priv but it stands out, looks good feels good and battery life once again is a strong feature here..

The Build.

Just like the Passport its got it in one, Its solid robust an this has a metal body and the back cover has the best feel to any phone I have used with its soft rubbery touch it gives great grip, this texture was also present on other Blackberry devices made recently which is excellent and its a phone that does not scream “BUY ME A CASE” because you dont need one and Im glad I did not get many from our suppliers after the Samsung S8 plus run with cases, However i still advise get one for heading out and about just to be sure, We reviewed the NOREVE LEATHER case for this device so check that one out. Overall the phone is solid, you can feel it and thats not a bad thing.

THE UNBOXING

The Keyboard.

A thing of perfection be it small, Hoever it took a few days to adjust,The blackberry passport keys where simply perfect for fast typing these however are bigger than the priv and smaller than the passport but more clickly and responsive but after a few days of thimb lag and soreness I got used to them quuckly and could type like a pro. It really depends again of finger size and for me with sasauge fingers well I made it in the end. Not all was bad because you can use the virtual keyboard too which is great so be it their own stock keyboard or swiftkey you have choice galore atop the physical one. Also we have a trackpad built in with a fingerprint scanner which both work amazing fast and this gives you full use of the screen estate being 4.5 inches you would need it, FP scanner is very fast and worked flawlessly during my test period.

The Screen

For me its too small but its intended market its not an issue, I like big screens and this took getting use to coming from near 7 inch screens and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. If you are into VR you can forget about it too which would be an issue should I use just one device so for thoe who want to exlpore VR move along unless you have a spare phone at home to join the VR club. The screen ratio on this is odd like the Passport but over time you will adjust only though if you are not into or coming from the huge screens on offer this screen is 4.5 inches with 1080 x 1620 a 433 ppi pixel density with IPS LCD so it was a bit darker than whats on offer even with the brightness turned up it seemed drk but again it would pass over time. It is tough but we have seen videos with the screen pop out, I dropped my phone twice nothing happed and again in the real world I would not be doing exploratory pointless test just to prove how touch it is, Any screen can get damaged on a fall its just luck on how it lands.

Under the hood.

Sometimes laggy depending on what you throw at it. I am not a heavy application user or gamer and mostly used social media ,docs or note taking apps and spend a bit on you tube at time when multiple tabs where open and we are talking 15/20 tabs here it did buckle under pressure at times whether or not that was the apps I was using or that dam stupid Facebook app which even locks up S8 Plus I dont know, It did tell me Twitter and Facebook where problem apps. Its powered by a Snapdragon 625 chipset and the CPU is Octa-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 so in fairness for anyone who is into the above they will be fine to top it off the battery is fantastic yet again which for most is now the deal breaker these days clocking in at a 3505 mAh which lasts a full day no problem. Storage too is adequate with 32GB of on board and expandable to 256GB which for most is plenty and of course there is 3GB of RAM. Its by no means a slouch..

The Camera and Video

whilst I am by no means a camera expert nor claim to be for me it takes great images and video see the samples below only DLSR types would pick at the specs and images here but for the normal joe soap they will be pleased at the performance overall, Even the sound quality on recording is greatly reproduced. From using several phones it does no match the Galaxy S8 P but its up there with competitors and thats just from visual inspection and not going by touted lab test results which we normally see from you know who and have failed miserably in the past but thats an argument for another day.. All shots and video are taken on default mode so messing with the many features was used You can just point and shoot….

Who is this for

Anyone, particularly the old fan who have not yet moved because of the Android change, You need to wake up and get along with times there is lots to offer here SECURITY being the one of the most important features on the phone with DTEK, Alongside Blackberry Hub too which some folk dislike and I can understand why when it works it works, sometimes its behind but who sits on their phone waiting for it to notfiy you or your next photo like you can of course use the default gmail account for example DTEK works for the most but you can fall back like I said, For all the other things its a great phone, given its small screen which will bother some and even for me it was an issue but I got over it I still prefer the bigger screen for media consumption but I can cast to my TV if required its a swings and roundabouts phone you could say,its solid its got the power to ditch battery anxiety and it just looks dam good, It stands out from the typical boring industrial design we have come accustom to and it does everything else and other mid tier – high-end phone does with ease aside the odd lag..

If you are a Blackberry fan of old have not moved across yet this is the time to do so if you really like the traditional keyboard and power behind,There is a full suite of apps from Blackberry and MS if you are afraid of loosing out. If you dont STILL like the idea wait for the next model which we will probably see at IFA this year or even another colour in its current form.

If you fancy picking one up the best prices are at CloveUK or John Lewis both which will ship via parcel motel.

We unbox and take a look at the #Nokia3310 2017 #Nokia #Ireland #HMDGlobal

The day has finally arrived, the all new 2017 edition of the Nokia 3310 has landed here and we are going to unbox the New model and compare it to its older version which was around in the year 2000. We have side by side pics and we go through the entire menu and what is avaialble. There is plenty here to keep you busy should you have the phone with you but the only painful part is the typing. It will take a few mintues to adjust to how we all used to type all them years ago but the keys are tactile and nice and overal the phone feels much more ergonomic in the hand its half as thick as its predessor..

We do however have a camera on board with several features, A radio, SD card support, 1200mAh battery ,Notes,Games 2MP camera with flash and a torch, Opera mobile store a voice recorder and some more. If there is anything you need to know just ask and dont forget to be aware of the scams going around with the fake models that have appeared on the market here, Read all about that over HERE

Review – Speedlink SNAPPY stereo speakers. #Speakers #Speedlink

These blue-turquoise speakers are compact and light, easily portable if on the move, they are also available in black-grey / red-white / white-yellow.

The quality is surprisingly good, the dynamic range and base may not be as good as speakers costing 100s of euro but I suspect 90% of listeners would not notice this. The sound is based on your perspective   attitude.  Play your Spotify which can have low, high and extreme sound quality settings. The normal setting is 96 kbps, the high is 160 kbps and extreme is 320kbps. Apple Music is streamed at 256Kbps in AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) format. Until recently, extreme quality was only available on Spotify’s desktop program, but it is now available for iOS as well. Play music from a download web site (we are not endorsing the illegal download of music) which by its nature will have a dubious quality music. There is no point in paying hundreds of euro for speakers and output low quality music to your speakers. If you want HD quality sound, (higher than 44.1 kHz sample rate and/or higher than 16-bit linear bit depth.) invest in appropriate music to your speakers and expensive speakers.

Speaker features:

  • Active stereo speakers
  • Convenient desktop remote
  • Trendy design
  • Lively multimedia sound quality
  • USB powered
  • 6W RMS for powerful bass
  • Practical desktop remote for convenient volume adjustment
  • Metal mesh protection
  • Rubber feet for acoustic decoupling
  • Compact design
  • 1.25m cable
  • Dimensions: 99 × 84 × 101mm (W × D × H)
  • Weight: 400g

Product No.: SL-810002-BETE

Note: These are not wireless connectivity / nor Bluetooth connection.

The power lead is excellent been a USB lead, this means you can plug into your laptop and play music direct, or plug (in this case an iPhone 6s) via the jack plug with the usb direct to a standard phone audio socket. Alternatively, if out an about you can plug directly into the usb lead into a power bank, and the Jack Plug direct in your phone! sorted on the move. (admittedly the cables are a bit short which helps to avoid clutter from the cables, especially when on the move)

The speakers appear sold worldwide which is confirmed by the multiple languages on the instructions (which are of little use), I suspect due to the high volume of manufactured units the bulk orders have improved the quality while reducing the cost.

If you happy with realistic sound then these speakers will fit the bill, this is a speaker that won’t break the bank.
