ESET bulks up its ESET HOME consumer protections against identity theft, ransomware, phishing, and more

ESET, a global leader in cybersecurity solutions, has announced the launch of its upgraded consumer offering ESET HOME Security, introducing new features such as ESET Folder Guard and Multithread Scanning, together with an overall improvement of its capabilities. Identity Protection featuring Dark Web Monitoring is now globally available.

These enhancements to ESET HOME Security, as an all-in-one solution for consumers, correspond to the increasing number of advanced, automated, and AI-driven threats targeting individuals and address growing concerns about data privacy, ransomware attacks, phishing, and scams.

Despite being packed with the latest technology, ESET HOME Security remains easy to use thanks to ESET HOME, a comprehensive security management platform available across all major operating systems — Windows, macOS, Android, iOS — and covering all typical smart home devices. Now ESET HOME Security offers even more formidable protection for entire households.

“As a progressive digital life protection vendor, ESET is dedicated to always being one step ahead of adversaries. Our team of experts created a powerful digital life protection solution that blends more than 30 years of human expertise with artificial intelligence, multilayered security technology, and live cloud protection. Following a prevention-first approach that stops threats before they can do any harm, ESET HOME Security brings peace of mind regarding privacy and security, while staying user-friendly, powerful, light, and fast,” said Viktória Ivanová, Vice President of Consumer and IoT Segment at ESET.

To complement the long list of already existing layers of protection, including Antivirus & Antispyware, Firewall, Ransomware Shield, Anti-Phishing, Safe Banking, Safe Browsing, Password Manager, VPN, and Anti-Theft — to name just a few — new features and upgrades have been added:

New Dark Web Monitoring — ESET Identity Protection* scours websites on the dark web, black market chat rooms, blogs, and other data sources to detect the illegal trading and selling of users’ personal information. ESET technology sends prompt alerts so users can take immediate action.

New ESET Folder Guard — This technology helps protect Windows users’ valuable data from malicious apps and threats, such as ransomware, worms, and wipers (malware that can damage users’ data). Users can create a list of protected folders — files in these folders can’t be modified or deleted by untrusted applications.

New Multithread Scanning — Improves scanning performance for multi-core processor devices using Windows by distributing scanning requests among available CPU cores. There can be as many scanning threads as the machine has processor cores.

New Link Scanner — This feature improves ESET Mobile Security Anti-Phishing that, in general, blocks potential phishing attacks coming from websites or domains listed in the ESET malware database. The Link Scanner is an additional layer of protection for Android smartphone users that allows ESET Mobile Security to check every link a user tries to open, not only those coming from supported websites and social network apps. For instance, if a user receives a phishing link in a game app and opens it, the link is first redirected to the ESET Mobile Security app, where it is checked, before being redirected to the browser. If the user is using an unsupported browser, the Link Scanner will block the malicious link in this case.

Improved Gamer Mode — This feature is for users who demand uninterrupted usage of their software without pop-up windows and want to minimize CPU usage. The improved version allows users to create a list of apps automatically starting gamer mode. For cautious players, there is also a new option to display interactive alerts while gamer mode is running.

Improved Password Manager — ESET Password Manager now includes an option to remotely log out of Password Manager when it is logged in on other devices. Users can check their password against the password breach list and view a security report that informs users if they use any weak or duplicate passwords for their stored accounts. Password Manager has an integrated option to use third-party programs as an optional two-factor authentication (2FA).

Improved Cyber Security for Mac users — ESET HOME Security tiers for Mac users now have a new unified Firewall with both basic and advanced setup options in the main Graphical User Interface (GUI). This means the solution is tailored to the needs of users from basic to more advanced, without unnecessary settings.

This robust all-in-one security product is an ideal solution for all who have concerns beyond general cybersecurity, and it includes privacy protection, identity protection, performance optimization, device protection, and smart home protection. Because in a world of advanced cyberthreats, quality matters.

HONOR Magic V3 review

The HONOR Magic V3 is my latest foldable phone in and after using it for sometime is certainly an appealing device due to its weight and thickness as when it comes to foldable phones this is the problem, starting out bulky some years ago we now have finally a compelling device that shouts loud to its competition.

For me I am still on kind of on the with the flip and fold phones but the more time spent with them the more I enjoy them and for this model the HONOR Magic V3 does set a tone going forward for others. We have done a good look over the phone below so if you have not seen that video yet do so..

Unboxing and UI walkthrough

The Phone itself looks and feels good in the hand and is notably lighter than others out there so far anyone that has seen it has asked question noting the camera on the rear getting their attention and when they seen if flipped open they where super impressed with how light it is and how the screen is inside, the build quality also noted and it is fast no matter what you throw a it.

Multitasking King – If you multitask all day long like me look no further this handled anything I threw at it and I would be a power user and the battery easily lasted me a day sometimes more and with the ability to have multiple panels on your inner homescreen doing several jobs at once is a treat and ideal for those who need the same.

With both screens offering dynamic refresh rates this is somewhat a buzzword still however if you notice it you will notice it both the inner screen which is 7.92 inches ands the outer 6.43 inches do a great job be it just looking at social media, emails or watching videos which you will do on this phone.

Official HONOR Magic V3 case review

Cameras –  If you like photography there is no need not to like this camera and with their AI features and some of Googles AI it is a really good camera and would want to be for the price you pay. On my testing it did well and I am no pro camera guy but it done a great job overall here and you can decide by the samples below yourself. One thing I was hoping and they did bring over from the HONOR 200 Pro which is still a mighty phone I use today was the Studio Harcourt partnership.

The HONOR Magic V3 is an All-in-One device, with no compromises on any specification. With a similar HONOR Magic camera design, the HONOR Magic V3 excels in imaging with its Falcon Camera System and AI-Motion Sensing Capture and for the first time, features a periscope telephoto lens whilst maintaining its slimness. The HONOR Magic V3 features a 50MP Wide Camera with the largest f/1.6 aperture among foldable phones, perfect for capturing every detail in every photograph. The introduction of the periscope lens facilitates up to 100x zoom, creating exceptional zoom-quality images.

Image and Video Samples

The HONOR Magic V3 is packed with an advanced 5150mAh Third-generation Silicon-carbon Battery, supported by the lightning-fast 66W. Wired and 50W Wireless HONOR SuperCharge again setting things straight for others.

HONOR Magic V3 offers a host of intelligent features. These include Magic Portal on Foldable, along with on-device AI enabled photography features like HONOR AI Motion Sensing for Lightning-fast shots, and the HONOR AI Portrait Engine for portrait enhancement. Collaborating with Google Cloud, HONOR enriches a range of productivity features supported by Google’s AI models and Cloud technologies to empower users to improve overall efficiency, including HONOR AI Eraser, Face to Face Translation, and Translation tools in HONOR Notes. These deliver on HONOR’s promise of a new era of AI-enabled versatility and productivity, catering to the evolving demands of business and professional users.

Overall if you want a phone that gets things done and still on the fence I think this one might just persuade you if you have or have not seen or tried others this one for now I think hold out on its owns for everything it has on offer. I would like though to see some more cases for this from the company which is not a bad thing really.. Some do not like MagicOS but hey this is my second HONOR phone and I find it grand.

Esri Ireland, the market leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), has created a digital map of over 200 frightfully fun festivals and events happening across the island of Ireland this Halloween.

Esri’s ArcGIS digital mapping system was used to create an interactive map which features something for everyone this spooky season. The map details daytime and family-friendly events, as well as events for those who fancy more of a scare.

From creepy campfire tales in Belfast and after-dark jail tours in Cork, to a nightmare on Church Street in Mayo and a ghostly bus tour in Dublin, this map will help ghosts and ghouls of all ages and interests plan their celebrations for Halloween 2024.

Achieving sustainability goals in the era of AI

Today, as AI seamlessly integrates into our daily lives, its adoption and impact are no longer a question of ‘if’ but ’when’ and – most importantly – ’how’. Mark Hopkins, Sales Director at Dell Technologies Ireland

According to a Dell Technologies study, 76% of IT leaders believe that generative AI (GenAI) will be significant or transformative for their organizations. Meanwhile, McKinsey estimates that work automation using GenAI, and other technologies will boost productivity by 60-70%.

As AI becomes more embedded in our daily lives, its potential to help build a more sustainable future is becoming increasingly evident. AI’s ability to analyze vast amounts of data allows businesses and governments to make more informed decisions about sustainability efforts. Moreover, from optimising energy consumption to enhancing supply chain efficiency new technologies can help achieve sustainable goals in the era of AI.

This comes as the EU pushes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050, new sustainability reporting standards are being enforced, compelling businesses to rethink their ESG strategies.

Organisations in Ireland see the opportunities that lie ahead. Dell’s Innovation Catalysts Study found that 80% of Irish business leaders said that emerging technologies has positively impacted their sustainability goals, with 37% using technology to improve energy efficiency.

However, integrating AI is not without challenges. One of the most pressing concerns is the energy intensity of AI technologies. According to a Gartner® report1, increasing adoption of GenAI will lead to dramatic increases in energy use, with annual ICT electricity increases of 25% or more. This rise in energy use threatens sustainability goals, as companies risk falling short of environmental performance targets.

Accelerating energy efficiency

Modernising data center infrastructure is one of the most effective ways to advance sustainability. AI can support this by driving efficiencies while also enhancing company’s ability to monitor and manage its carbon footprint.

Energy-efficient technology has also evolved significantly over the years, rendering old hardware a burden. What took six servers in 2013 takes just one today. Meanwhile, innovative software and remote management solutions can provide an overview of the organization’s energy usage and environmental impact.

By carefully designing their IT environment in line with their priorities, businesses can find a balance between reducing their physical footprint, increasing efficiency, and equipping themselves with the capacity they need to grow.

However, as companies approach IT transformation, what they do with their data will have implications for future growth. 37% of respondents to the 2023 Dell GenAI Pulse Survey indicated that their data and intellectual property are too valuable to be placed in a GenAI tool to which a third party might have access. By bringing AI to your data, you can maintain data sovereignty while embracing the benefits of GenAI.

As-a-Service enabling AI transformation while advancing sustainability

The demand for flexible consumption models like ‘As a Service’ (aaS) is growing, as it offers companies greater agility in developing AI workloads. A Forrester study found that 88% of businesses expect sustainability benefits from adopting aaS model, and 65% anticipate cost savings for more than 10%.

An aaS model ensures access to the latest, energy efficient hardware produced with sustainability in mind, all while reducing waste.

By opting for an aaS model, businesses can cut costs and reduce waste while gaining more control over their applications and data, thereby allowing them to modernise their IT environment and scale with AI where necessary.

Adopting AI without compromising energy efficiency to drive the future of work

Modern devices are increasingly being designed, manufactured, and shipped with sustainability in mind, in addition to having intelligent AI-enabled features that keep users productive. For instance, Dell Optimiser adapts and responds to how users work, adjusting performance to meet peak worktimes and extending battery life through intelligent power-saving features.

Simple actions such as aligning energy settings with performance needs, powering down devices after work, and using rechargeable peripherals contribute to energy efficiency.

Regular technology refresh cycles also ensure that companies are operating with the most energy-efficient devices, reducing both upfront costs and total cost of ownership while driving sustainability efforts forward.

Leveraging AI for a more sustainability future

Adopting energy-efficient infrastructure is a powerful way to advance sustainability and is already bringing about a shift in how businesses in Ireland approach innovation and growth, especially in the context of the country’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

However, integrating AI into these efforts requires a commitment from the entire organisation. To fully leverage these opportunities, businesses must adopt a holistic approach, bringing together leaders from various departments to collaborate and embed AI-driven strategies into every aspect of their operations.

As Ireland embarks on this critical journey towards a sustainable future, the era of AI has begun, and there has never been a better time to prioritize multifaceted energy-efficient initiatives that align with national carbon reduction goals.

Desktop App (Windows Only)

The Poly Lens Desktop app allows you to configure and manage your Poly audio and video devices while enhancing your work environment with wellbeing reminders. However, I found the software interface somewhat outdated compared to modern standards. Although the camera performed well technically, it lacked the advanced features I would expect from HP/Poly. For instance, when attempting to update the software, the app indicated that a new version was available, yet none could be found.

Warranty – 2 years

Conclusion

As anticipated from HP/Poly products, the plug-and-play functionality of the Studio P5 worked seamlessly without any issues. The build quality is commendable; however, an upgrade to a USB-C cable instead of USB-A would be beneficial for modern setups. While the camera does not include a carry case—something that would be advantageous for hybrid working environments—the essential features are well-executed.The camera delivers excellent performance with quality optics, low-light compensation, and pro-grade resolution at 1080p. The four times digital zoom and directional microphone ensure a personalised video conferencing experience without requiring extensive technical setup. Overall, the Poly Studio P5 USB-A webcam offers good picture quality and audio performance even in challenging lighting conditions. It is an ideal choice for users seeking a reliable and straightforward solution for video calls and online meetings at a reasonable price point.

Dublin Drone Innovation Partnership will shape the future of urban air mobility

A two-year in-depth study to help prepare Dublin and other European cities for the widespread use of drones in commercial and civic life has been launched today at the offices of Dublin City Council, by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, James Lawless T.D.

The project is led by a research team from Lero, the Research Ireland Centre for Software and Maynooth University, in collaboration with Dublin City Council (DCC), and the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA).

Speaking at the launch, Minister Lawless said: “Ireland has an established record of leadership in regulation of emerging technologies. As drones begin to be used more and more across the globe, at home we have seen them supplying emergency medicines, delivering fast food, used for search and rescue purposes and to enhance public safety among a range of important applications. Earlier this year, the Government held a public consultation on the development of a policy framework for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones. The research partnership being launched today, between Lero, Maynooth University, Dublin City Council and the Irish Aviation Authority, with stakeholder engagement at its heart, is very much aligned with Government’s efforts to foster the industry’s growth while mitigating safety, security, environmental, privacy, and other concerns.”

Welcoming the announcement, Dr Ciarán Seoighe, Deputy CEO of Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland, the newly established research and innovation funding agency, said: “Research Ireland supports partnerships such as this to bring key stakeholders together, to drive progress and capitalise on the advantages offered by innovative and disruptive technologies. While exploring emerging technologies and systems to capture data and support responses to critical events, this collaborative approach helps us to better understand its potential benefits and impact on wider society. Investing in basic research is of strategic importance to Research Ireland, as it allows us to support a pipeline of transformative solutions to bring about real-world benefits.”

Project Coordinator Professor Tim McCarthy of Maynooth University and LERO believes the project is particularly timely as unmanned drone ecosystems are beginning to emerge globally and involve a wide variety of stakeholders and end-users.

A vital aspect of the research project, according to Prof. McCarthy, will be the creation of a digital twin for Dublin City to explore and simulate urban drone flight ecosystems, allowing researchers to address issues that emerge in a safe and controlled environment.

“This digital twin will capture inputs from all stakeholders, enable simulation of drone activities and provide prototype digital optimisation services in addressing various business, market, safety, privacy, nuisance and environmental concerns,” he added.

The partnership will also deliver a number of ‘state of the art’ drone applications to show the benefits of autonomous and remote piloting of drones to support life-saving and emergency response applications in a Dublin City setting.

“This unique drone innovation partnership will contribute to Dublin City Council’s Drone and Urban Air Mobility Strategy 2024-2029, an ambitious roadmap to support the integration of drones into city services and position Dublin and Ireland as a European leader in Drones and Urban Air Mobility,” said Jamie Cudden, Smart City Lead Dublin City Council.

Enda Walsh, manager of the IAA’s UAS division, believes the partnership will deliver crucial insights for safely integrating UAS into urban environments while maximising benefits to society, and laying the foundation for developing UAS Traffic Management (UTM) for the State.

“The Drone Innovation Partnership project will look at stakeholder concerns and provide crucial information and analysis of the key aspects around security, environment, and privacy for UAS integration into urban environments. It will also support the future establishment of a comprehensive and effective UTM infrastructure for the State, which provides a safe environment for all air traffic while facilitating a growing UAS industry.”
