Groundbreaking health IT project wins top honours at NI’s leading IT awards

The winners of the 2024 Belfast Telegraph IT Awards, in partnership with Telefónica Tech UK & Ireland, were announced on Friday evening at a prestigious ceremony held at the MAC Theatre in Belfast. Hosted by comedian Andrew Ryan, the event celebrated excellence in the Northern Ireland IT sector, with awards presented across 19 categories.

The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust was a standout winner, taking home three major awards. The trust was recognised for its successful implementation of Encompass, a digital health records system for citizens in Northern Ireland. The project earned the title of Best Public Sector or Third Sector IT Project, as well as one of the biggest awards of the night, the Overall IT Team or Company of the Year Award.

Noel Brady, founder of consultancy firm NB1 Ltd, was honoured with the most prestigious award of the night, Outstanding Contribution Award, as the company celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. “I am deeply honored to receive this recognition,” said Mr Brady. “As a Belfast man, I am totally committed to growing the economy and creating employment opportunities for the next generation of talent in our city.”

Other notable winners included Allstate, Expleo, Options Technology, Mantle Services, and Covernet, among others. The 2024 awards saw a record number of entries, with a panel of esteemed judges from Northern Ireland’s IT industry, chaired by Peter Russell, Managing Director of PR Business Growth Services, narrowing down the finalists.

UCD STUDENTS TOKYO BOUND AFTER WINNING NATIONAL TECH & INNOVATION COMPETITION

UCD Commerce students Oisin Mallon and Oisin Walsh have been crowned the 2024 Red Bull Basement National champions and will go on to represent Ireland in the World Finals in Tokyo next month.

After 1,800 applications nationwide, the search for the next generation of Irish innovators came to a head at TUD Grangegorman on Thursday night when finalists presented their ideas to a panel of judges from across the Irish creative, media and tech landscape.

Teams from across the country were represented in the final. Each presented their own business plan, created with the support of AI technology. After much deliberation, University College Dublin pair Oisin Mallon and Oisin Walsh were announced as the winners, nabbing a laptop each from partners AMD, as well as a place at next month’s Red Bull Basement World Finals in Tokyo.

The team presented their plans for StepAhead, which seeks to connect young people with mentors who have recently navigated the same career or educational paths, offering real-world advice to help them make informed, confident decisions.

On their victory, Oisin Mallon (aged 22 from Omeath, Co. Louth) said: “We are delighted to win the Red Bull Basement National Final with StepAhead and represent Ireland on a global stage in Tokyo with our idea.”

Oisin Walsh (aged 22 from Killarney, Co. Kerry) added: “We are just thrilled to have won the Red Bull Basement National Final. We can’t wait to bring our idea to the global stage in Tokyo. Seeing an idea of ours come to life is an amazing feeling and I’m excited to see where it takes us.”

The next step for the dynamic duo is Tokyo, with over 40 countries set to compete at the World Finals. Across Monday December 2nd, and Thursday December 5th, they will attend workshops, dedicated AI educational sessions, and have the chance to network with international entrepreneurs and business leaders, before they go up against their peers for the World title.

The grand prize for the global winner? A three week accelerator programme, all expenses paid, to Silicon Valley and Los Angeles in 2025, where they will receive hands-on experience, mentorship and opportunities to connect with top industry leaders, including insights from Red Bull Basement global partners Microsoft.

Lero technological research could enable older people to live independently reducing the stress for them and those who support their self-reliance

Improving technology-enabled home care for older people to help Ireland reduce the annual €500 million impact on the economy from people falling – especially those over 65 – is one of the goals of a new interdisciplinary research programme at Lero, the University of Limerick-based Research Centre for Software.

A two-year €140,000 research programme focussing on technology-enabled care (TEC) in home environments is being part-funded by Shannon-headquartered Ei Electronics, one of Ireland’s leading indigenous electronics manufacturing and exporting companies, employing 1,250 worldwide.

Lero researcher Associate Professor Katie Crowley said that while technology-enabled care (TEC) in home environments currently has support items such as motion sensors and panic buttons, the innovative development and use of technology can help people function safely and remain at home longer.

Dr Crowley, who is also attached to The Ageing Research Centre (ARC) at the University of Limerick (UL), added: “One example of this is in relation to falls. The National Health Service in the UK report that approximately 1 in 3 adults over 65 years and half of people over 80 will have at least one fall a year.  “In Ireland, the economic impact of falls is €500 million annually, according to data from the Health Service Executive. For the elderly, having a fear of falling significantly increases the chance of having a fall, and emerging evidence suggests that having monitoring technology reduces this fear, leading to improved mobility for the older person,” added Dr Crowley, who lectures in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at UL.

Lero lead researcher Prof. Ita Richardson believes a growing need exists to modify and integrate occupational home practice with innovative technology and software, changing homecare significantly for older people who often have cognitive, physical, caregiving and healthcare needs. “Initially, we need to understand how older people’s lives and the lives of their formal and informal carers could change through TEC,” said Prof. Richardson, who also shares her expertise with ARC.

The Lero team also includes Dr Ann-Marie Morrissey, who brings occupational therapy expertise to the project.

Ei Electronics head of research and development Mike Keegan said they are delighted to work with Lero, whose work in connected health, driverless vehicles, smart communities, and other areas is world-leading.

“At Ei Electronics, we are all about deploying dependable technologies to improve people’s living environment today and into the future. Where lives are at risk, especially among older adults living independently, nothing can be left to chance, and we hope this programme can make life less stressful for those living by themselves and those supporting that independence,” he added.

Ireland Needs 1 in 5 Students to Pursue STEM to Sustain the Country’s Leadership in Tech, Pharma, and Engineering

STEM South West is back for its sixth year, promising to be the biggest and best one yet – this time taking over Cork City Hall on Wednesday November 20th from 4pm to 8pm. Event organisers are calling on secondary students, parents and teachers to join them for an exciting afternoon journey within the world of STEM.

The theme of this year’s Expo is “The World Needs You: Solving Global Challenges with STEM”. The event will showcase how STEM careers and a STEM education can address real-world problems that impact climate change, healthcare, robotics, AI and medtech.

To maintain Ireland’s position as a leading global hub for tech, pharma, medtech, engineering and bioscience industries, STEM South West estimate that at least 20pc of Ireland’s 964,000 primary and secondary students[1] will be needed to go on to study STEM.

In support of that effort, it is joining forces with industry and education partners on this live showcase event.

FREE for all, they will be welcomed from all corners of the country to get a glimpse into the exciting possibilities and opportunities that await them in any STEM field they choose.

The impact of previous events has been noteworthy, with 9 out of 10 students expressing an increased interest in pursuing a career in STEM after attending the event.

An Tánaiste, Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence speaking at the event launch,

This initiative continues to promote, empower and encourage young people to explore STEM opportunities across industry sectors that significantly contribute to our nation’s economic growth. Investment in knowledge has always been our greatest enabler and STEM South West – with its widespread industry and education partner base – is opening doors for our young people. I wish the organising team, the exhibitors and all of the visiting students, parents, teachers every success and an enjoyable immersive experience.”

Mary Good, Chair, STEM South West commented,

“ Ireland offers an incredible range of opportunities to students that choose to study STEM subjects. These subjects not only serve as the bedrock for so many careers but can also be the ticket for students and young graduates to explore the world, discover, learn and find new ways and means to make a positive impact on themselves and on the lives of others. Every step towards positive change matters as our global society faces critical issues around health, climate change, housing, energy and the very future of how we live and work. Investing in those that will hold the future in their hands,  inspiring and equipping them to learn, lead and innovate is the right thing to do.

The work that STEM South West is doing is necessary to ensure that our current STEM industry base is secure, that companies continue to locate in Ireland, that our start-ups and SMEs are given the opportunity to thrive, and that the students of today are given the skills to tackle the global challenges of tomorrow. STEM South West is driving a collective response to this – by showcasing the incredible range of opportunities that the STEM sector has to offer across the South West.”

The enthusiastic participation of industry experts and organisations underscores the significance of this event in fostering the ongoing growth and prosperity of STEM industries in the region.

Teachers and Guidance Counsellors will have a dedicated section at the event, where they can learn first-hand about the career options now available in the STEM sector in this region.

John Morrissy, CIO of PepsiCo, shared his vision for the event, which is sponsored by PepsiCo,

We are delighted to sponsor the 2024 STEM South West Expo. PepsiCo is home to hundreds of beloved brands, which support thousands of technical jobs, including R&D, engineering and IT. STEM leaders in these fields create the foundation for future success. Together, they show how science, technology and engineering can unlock creativity that inspires. We look forward to meeting the STEM leaders of tomorrow at Cork City Hall on November 20th”.

Visitors will get to explore exhibits from some of the biggest employers in the country, including Johnson & Johnson, DePuy Synthes, Stryker, Gilead Sciences, Astellas, PM Group, MTU, UCC, Analog Devices, Horner, Astellas, and many more.

Tickets can be booked at https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/stem-south-west-expo-2024-tickets-1022537105007

Trinity and CKDelta take AI approach to tackle key challenges of utilities sector

Researchers from Trinity College Dublin are partnering with CKDelta to take an AI-driven approach to tackling some key efficiency and sustainability challenges faced by the utilities sector.

CKDelta is an AI software business within CKI Innovations Opportunities Development (CKH IOD), a member of CK Hutchison Holdings, leveraging data, expertise and intellectual property to drive improved business performance. Headquartered in Dublin, CKDelta is providing €865,000 in funding  to support the appointment of a postdoctoral researcher and a number of PhD students, who will work on a range of research projects under the supervision of Professor Gregory O’Hare, Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Head of Trinity’s School of Computer Science and Statistics.

The research projects will fall under two main umbrellas: predictive maintenance and early warning systems.

Predictive maintenance is a data-driven approach that uses AI to monitor the condition and performance of assets and predict when they need servicing or replacement. As a consequence maintenance can be scheduled at the optimal time, avoiding unnecessary downtime, reducing operational expenses, and improving safety and reliability.

The research collaboration will seek to deliver predictive maintenance models that provide better insights for informed decision making, with maintenance currently often driven on the foot of customer complaints and logs of issues as they arise.

Early warning systems represent a set of tools and methods that aim to detect, monitor, and forecast potential threats or disruptions to utility companies. In the case of the water industry they provide benefits in cases such as leaks, bursts, floods, sewerage overflows and blockages.

The research programme also seeks to enhance an early warning system to improve the efficiency, reliability, and resilience of the water network, reduce operational and maintenance costs, enhance customer satisfaction and trust, and protect public health and the environment. It also aims to develop an anomaly detection system to identify near real time differences from expected behaviours, which may be reusable/adaptable to other situations.

In addition to the funding, experts from CKDelta will be providing the platforms in which the Trinity researchers can investigate the data, as well as offering data engineering and data science support.

Prof. Gregory O’Hare, Trinity, said: “We are very grateful to CKDelta for their support and look forward to pooling our expertise as we seek to address some of the most pressing challenges affecting the utilities sector. The scale of the challenges means there is also a significant opportunity to improve sustainability and efficiency, and we believe our data- and AI-driven approach offers great potential in taking a tangible leap forwards.

“We hope that this collaboration will form the basis of a sustained, trusted and mutually beneficial relationship. This will be centred around a co-laboratory where the shared expertise of both Trinity and CKDelta will help with the effective, informed and judicious adoption and deployment of appropriate cutting edge AI technologies within the CKDelta utilities client portfolio and beyond.”

Joe Parker, CEO of CKH IOD, said:  “This collaboration combines two complementary forces in AI: the frontier research capabilities of Trinity College Dublin—and its ability to experiment, innovate and test new ideas without restriction, in a way that few commercial organisations can; with CK Delta’s unique capacity to apply innovation directly to real-world commercial challenges, to help businesses thrive in an increasingly data-driven economy.

“Throughout the next four years, the partnership will generate new streams of knowledge transfer, with cross-pollination of skills, perspectives and specialisms that may otherwise be impossible.”
