Astrophotography competition goes mobile for 2024

‘Reach for the Stars’, the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies’ (DIAS) astrophotography competition, has returned for the fourth year running and is calling on Ireland’s budding astro-photographers to submit their images.

This year the competition has added a new category, the ‘Night Sky in Your Hand’, a mobile phone category to encourage more people to get involved.

The competition, which opened for entries today (10.04.24), is seeking the best astro-photographs taken in Ireland over the period 28th April 2023 to 10th May 2024. It is calling for submissions under five distinct categories:

  1. Night Sky in Your Hand: Images taken with only a smartphone, and without telescopes, of an astronomical scene.
  2. Out of this World – Planetary: Images of the planets, sun and moon.
  3. Out of this World – Deep Sky: Images of celestial objects that exist outside our solar system such as nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies.
  4. Back on Earth – Landscape: Images that depict a feature of astronomical interest as a prominent feature and elements such as nature, land or water.
  5. Back on Earth – Landmark: Images that depict a feature of astronomical interest as a prominent feature and elements such as cityscapes, buildings, houses, historical structures or monuments.

Launching the competition today, Dr. Eucharia Meehan, CEO and Registrar of DIAS, said: “DIAS is delighted to launch the ‘Reach for the Stars’ competition for 2024. We are always trying to improve and grow the competition and have made a number of updates this year that we hope will bring the competition to a new level. We now have an additional category inviting entries taken on smartphones. Cameras on phones can now take such high-quality photos that we felt it would be a great opportunity to encourage more people to get involved.

“We’re also delighted that the Astronomical Observatories of Ireland (AOI) has come on board this year and is sponsoring a prize for our competition winners. The AOI is a strategic partnership between us at DIAS, Armagh Observatory & Planetarium and Birr Castle Heritage Foundation to protect the astronomical heritage, and promote astronomical research and knowledge across the island of Ireland, so it is fitting for the Observatories to support the competition.

“Reach for the Stars is open to everyone – whether you are a seasoned professional or amateur with a love for astronomy. All we ask is that you follow the competition guidelines carefully when making the submission to ensure your images are eligible.”

Also commenting, Professor Peter Gallagher, Head of Astronomy and Astrophysics at DIAS and member of the judging panel, said: “With the addition of the new mobile phone category this year, I’m excited to see the range of entries we’ll get. This new element really opens the door for lots of amateur and budding astro-photographers who might not necessarily have the equipment but have an eye for a good shot to showcase their work.

“There are lots of astronomical events coming up in April alone – we’ve just had a solar eclipse, Lyrid’s meteor shower will take place later this month, along with a full moon before the closing date of the competition – so there are plenty of opportunities for people to get out there and capture some shots.

“The night sky can be enjoyed by everyone – we’ve had everything from glittering galaxies to incredible skyscapes entered over the past three years, and we’re looking forward to seeing what this year’s submissions have in store!”

Competition Details

Entrants may submit up to two images per category to the competition. The deadline for entries is 5pm on Friday, 10th May 2024.

All entries to the competition will be screened by a shortlisting panel to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria. The shortlisted images in each category will then go forward for consideration by the judging panel and for an online public vote.

Entries to the ‘Reach for the Stars’ competition will be judged by Brenda Fitzsimons, Picture Editor, The Irish Times; Michael McCreary, President, Irish Astronomical Society; Peter Gallagher, Senior Professor and Head of Astronomy and Astrophysics at DIAS and Niamh Breathnach, Senior Director, Alice Public Relations.

Prize Package

The winning photographers in the ‘Out of this World’ and ‘Back on Earth’ categories, as selected by the judging panel, will receive a prize package that includes:

  • Publication of their images on the DIAS and Irish Times websites;
  • Passes to the three sites of the Astronomical Observatories of Ireland – Dunsink Observatory (Race to Space Escape Room), Armagh Observatory and Birr Castle Demesne;
  • A €500 voucher for photographic / telescopic equipment; and
  • A 12-month digital subscription to The Irish Times.

The winner of the Public Choice category, as voted for by the public, and the winner of the ‘Night Sky in Your Hand’ category will receive a voucher to the value of €250 for photographic / telescopic equipment, along with passes to the three sites of the Astronomical Observatories of Ireland – Dunsink Observatory (Race to Space Escape Room), Armagh Observatory and Birr Castle Demesne.

It is DIAS’s intention that the winning and highly commended images will also be included in an exhibition at DIAS during 2024.  Furthermore, all shortlisted images will be included in an online exhibition – for the purposes of the public vote – on the competition website reachforthestars.ie.

DIAS’s ‘Reach for the Stars’ competition is being run in partnership with The Irish Times, and is sponsored by Alice Public Relations. The Astronomical Observatories of Ireland and The Irish Astronomical Society are initiative supporters.

The Blackberry KeyOne black edition and Motion now available from John Lewis. #BlackBerry

Irish retailers and networks have shunned blackberry for some years now and whilst like Windows Phone seen a huge dip in shares BlackBerry fell the same way but they now have Android devices and they are still left out for those who want them, the same also applies to LG which of late have made great phones.

Be it ignorance from the networks or the manufacturers themselves this is something that can be addressed by making it happen or like in many instances with tech in Ireland we have to resort to importing the goods. This is can work in to our benefit at times with cost but overall it’s a channel most would prefer not to use and walk into a store and just buy the dam things there and then and also get a look at them.

now though John Lewis have them in stock and also Argos do in the UK, Even Argos here have ignored the TCL made devices which is unusual considering they sell LG devices and others not available on our networks. John Lewis is a reputable retailer in the UK and I have purchased several things from them so check them out if you are interested and use Parcel Motel to get it delivered. The older Blackberry KeyOne is also available to purchase which is really a nice phone but can be got cheaper elsewhere than its current advertised listing.

Nike go into the phone case business with iPhone cases.#Nike #iPhone #Cases

Fancy the sole of your Nike shoe on your mobile phone, Well its about to happen..

I am a huge Nike fan even though of late their prices for their retro trainers are double what the command price was when the OG versions where around and I in fact own a pretty unique collection of trainers myself which are very noteworthy also including the all new vapormax. (See below sample of collection) But what has this to do with tech, well there is tech invovled in some trainers but they have gone into the phone case business and these two combined has my attention.. But for now they are just for the god dam iPhone and again something the Americans like to do is USA ONLY which for me is stupid.Would remind you of Microsoft in more ways than one.

So why has this got me interested? I like my tech,my trainers and my phones, what I dont like is how they have launched the idea,Ok Perhaps its testing the water but limited availability and one phone…Come on.. Nike you could be onto something here.. In fact you are….

The cases do not come cheap but then again they fall on an average price range offering just about enough but you are paying for the brand and the sole of a shoe to slap on your mobile phone, Trainer fans will love this be it something you might not keep on your phone all day but it is something different and its a cool idea and perhaps we could see this now expand from other shoe manufacturers. One thing I would suggest is that Nike open their eyes some more and spread the range…

See them over HERE What do you think then……Tell us..

You’ll be able to get a Galaxy Note7 after all… well kind of. #Note7 #Samsung

You have to question the timing here.

A couple of weeks back we heard the rumor that Samsung was going to sell again the Note7 devices they had returned due defective hardware.

The Korean giant itself said that was not true soon afterwards, but we received an official press release saying otherwise.

Apparently the deal consist on different scenarios where you could actually get a Note7 as a refurbished unit or even “rent” one where available.

Devices that cannot be given back to customers, will be recycle in an environmental way and the elements that can’t go for that process will be used for test samples.

Yet its still to be seen where they’re going to be available and what exactly they meant by “rent” a device.

Samsung share no information regarding prices or markets that could find the devices in store. But as soon as we have more information we will let you now if you would be actually able to get one.

But if it’s possible, would you get yourself a Note7 again? Would you go for the upcoming S8 or wait for Note8?

Samsung decreases Galaxy A series price before S8 availability. #Samsung #GalaxyA2017

Earlier  this year Samsung announced the 2017 update to the Galaxy A series.

We already covered  everything you need to know about the devices, they are Awesome mid-to-high end smartphones.

Almost like a S7  in new form, the only downside we found was the price, a bit high considering you could get a proper S6 or even an S7 for almost the same price.

Well, looking down the market we discover that Samsung without any fanfare lower the prices of the Galaxy A5 and A3

Originally, the first one was price at €430 while the A3 was at €330.

But now, the Koreans quietly cut those prices to make them even more affordable.

The A5 is €370, while the A3 is at €310. This new price tags makes these awesome devices a complete bargain.

If you were not sure before now is your time to get your hands on any off the two or even the A7 if you prefer a bigger display.

But do you think is strictly related with the S8 announcement?

Meet Uptime, watching YouTube videos will never be the same. #YouTube #iOS #App

In the world we live in, YouTube is one of the big Media elements in our lives, but the “Social” factor, even though is supposed to be part of the name sometimes is not actually true.

Whether is in your phone, laptop or tablet, sharing a video you found with your friends is never an “easy” task.

And there is where Uptime shines

Usually part of what makes it hard, is that they need to be next to you in order for you to show them.

But there’s no need of that any more (at least partially) thanks to the guys at Area 120, a Google project that invites its own employees to develop new ideas through startups.

The premise is simple , yet really useful. You simply need to sign in with your Google account and using a Snapchat look-a-like interface, you can watch a video and you’ll find a bubble image with your friends face (they need to have the app too) around the edges so you can connect with them and start interacting with them.

Lets hear from the creators..

https://twitter.com/uptimeApp/status/841733138338349056

There’s one down side at this moment, the app is only available on iOS which is really weird if you think that is a Google app.

Although it should be ready to hit the Android ecosystem soon.

You can get the app over the ITunes Store HERE

What do you think about it? Will you give it a try?
