Apps are what people are after these days and there is an app for just about everything, literally everything,But how about your local community or town, something that can give you a wealth of information about your locale?? You might say well we all know whats in our own area but you could find yourself pleasantly surprised on things you might have missed, not only that these kind of apps are great for tourists too that come to your part of the world..
We talk to Aidan Wynne from eire.tv about the Tullamore app and more…
Over to you Aidan….
I have always been interested in Technology from an early age which was unusual because none of my friends had a great interest.
That was back in the days where you had to press different button combinations to get the cursor just to move across the screen.
I remember relatives always asking me what I wanted to do when I left school and I had no clue to be honest.
That all changed when I got a Windows 98 machine back in 97 and I must say as sad as it sounds, I am at my happiest sitting at a computer.
I have done a few smaller Apps like my home town of Ferbane in Offaly and I wanted to test myself to build a bigger one. Tullamore Appis probably the largest community App in Ireland at the moment.
There are over 1,200 click to call listings so in effect it is like the Tullamore Phone directory.
Other Features:
– Social media of Sports Clubs are shown on one page
– Stream of the Local Radio station
– A page which displays photos from a folder of a Local Facebook user
One of the biggest features is Notifications for Sports Clubs.
I have been told by some Clubs of huge bills which can run into thousands for Texting.
There is no need for that in this day and age.
Unlimited Notifications can be sent from a computer server in huge volumes.
The Android version is always built first because it takes a few hours to get the first version to the Play store where you can test it and then change it and resubmit.
When you submit an iPhone App to the Apple store it takes between 10-14 days to be approved and if there is something on the App like a photo of an Android phone, they can reject the App and it goes into Que where it could take longer.
I built the Tullamore App to test the waters in the bigger towns.
An App is successful only by the support of local Business, Community Bodies & Sports Clubs.
Sports Clubs get FREE Notifications and hopefully repay you by getting numbers onto the App.
Community Bodies get FREE features in return for promoting the App.
Business hopefully sponsor the App because of the numbers provided by the first two groups.
If Tullamore were to get behind the App then I envisage a lot more features in the future like Live Video for events.
I could for instance show a venue how to run a live broadcast of their Darts night…and it wouldn’t cost them anymore than a Band.I like to keep up with technology and there are a lot of great things I could put on an App but it will come down to the level of interest I get in each town.
My next big App will be based in a town which shows a real interest in using it to it’s potential. It is a leap of faith doing an App like this….Only time will tell as to whether it pays off.

Ulefone have just announced their latest handset is now up for pre-order which is said to be the best in its class and for the price asking a measly sum of 109.99 USD..
There is plenty of new cheap Androids to pick from today which are taking chunks from the bug players in the market and this is something to consider perhaps if you are on a budget, again it sports a now familiar design which has become boring for some..This however does look nice and sleek given its familiar looks which are quite obvious.
Some specs include Metal unibody, 2.5D Glass, MTK6753, 3GB RAM, 16GB, fingerprint scanner, 3050mAh big battery, 5-inch, HD display, Sony IMX149 sensor,Android 6.0. and its a Dual Sim..
For what looks well and the specs on offer for the price to pay it looks like a good deal to be had but we shall wait until our review unit arrives and then we will see it it lives up to job..
Finally.Night mode arrives on Twitter for Android. It it a simple added feature though just making the background dark and the text bright but it looks much nicer, maybe perhaps its just we are use the the theme we have been stuck with from day one,Yes another option users would like to see apart from editing tweets…
Twitter didnt make much fanfare about the new feature but just gave us a Tweet linking us to the Android FAQs and there you will find out how to turn it on which is quite simple. Effectively this new change just makes things much easier on your eyes with a grey colour text and the links are Blue but it looks nice too…
You will firstly need to update your app and then go to profile navigation menu and drag the slider across and that is it. Enjoy…..

British Airways says 4,000 pilots will have the ‘View From The Flight Deck’ app loaded onto their iPads from the start of August to take photos of customers visiting the cockpit before take-off or after landing. This is one thing we just get a quick glance of when we board and disembark our flights and it is a nice treat to sit inside the cockpit and have your photo taken..
This is a great idea and fans who are into travel and all things Aircraft which is something I take interest in myself. This would be neat if it caught on with other airlines and most likely will do so later on at some stage
The app automatically sends this special photo, which includes a graphic showing facts from their flight, to customers so they have an instant, unique memento of their trip.
The information on the photo includes the Captain’s name, route travelled and distance flown, as well as the aircraft type and registration. There is also an image of the aircraft to help budding young future pilots to recognise individual plane types the next time they fly.
Describing the new British Airways app, Denise Van Outen, said: “I love travelling with my family and want to remember all those precious moments with Betsy as she grows up.
“I think this a great new way to create another fun holiday memory, and it’s a bit different to the photos you’d normally bring back from a trip.
“As souvenirs go it beats a fridge magnet by a mile!”
British Airways’ head of flight operations, Captain Charlie Maunder, said: “As pilots we love flying and naturally want to share that with everyone, so we all enjoy welcoming customers up to the cockpit whenever possible.
“We’re always looking for new ways to make sure everyone has a memorable flight every time they fly and our new souvenir photo flight app is a great way to help us do just that.”

The Apple Watch bands have always been something people use to stand out, and this time that will be even more important if you’re going to Rio during the event.
Great Britain
As you can see, Apple is offering Limited Edition bands with your country national flag all over to show your support.
Take a look at this tweet from the American Sprinter Trayvon Bromell
More of these apps really need to be put out there but would it kill car showrooms?? Probably not because we do like to sit in and go for that test drive but VR is another approach to take into account which many companies are doing now and there is no harm in it at all. If you cant afford a supercar though VR will be the alternative route to take until you win the lotto.
However whilst this is not by any means a functional experience or one you can fully interact with there is room for improvement here and an idea as to what we can see later on and would certainly be welcome by users too. I was a little underwhelmed with this app and expected more but its nice nonetheless and gives us an idea of what can be done going forward.
