The FUJIFILM instax mini Link 3 smartphone printer has been part of my daily carry some time now and it is the latest addition to their portfolio of products and in fact a great fun piece of tech to bring on holiday, to the pub or to the beach or anywhere for that matter as it is portable and not huge by any stretch and will fit in most bags.
Coming in several colours Sage Green, Clay White, and Rose Pin there is something for everyone to pick from here and like before has a solid sturdy build and is not heavy, it also ha s a grippy texture to it which makes it easy to hold, there is a USB-C charging port on the side a film tray on the rear and of course a slot up top to eject the photos when printing right there and then.
There is a power key on the left side paired up with the function button, you can reprint photos by pressing the and holding the power button for 1 second but can order up to ten prints per shot as there is only ten in a pack but it will ask to refill if you have more. There is also some nice light effects up front on the device.
Picture quality has improved I think this time around as you will see in the video review with samples vs on device photos and with the options to edit in the app is great, there is also a AR app you can have fun with if that is your thing, it could be seen as a gimmick for some however for others not you will understand more when you play with it and see the premise behind it as it has been used before in shopping scenarios and sizing for example. Your photo will take around 3 minutes to complete which is fun to watch especially for those who never seen such or held a photo in their life with how things are today.
The battery is decent and will easily see you through 80 prints not that you would be shooting off that many prints in one sitting however this still means you can charge it up and if taking out and about there is plenty of charge on board and also they have ditched the micro USB for USB-C this time thankfully.
Overall again a cool product to have and get creative with some upgrades and useful apps to use, the cost of the film though again is a small caveat however this is something one can overcome by holding an actual photo after printing it there and then and can make a nice photo wall or frame from the results.

New Deloitte research shows that smartphone use is ingrained in our daily lives. A total of 96% of respondents say they own a smartphone, up from 94% last year.
Mobile phones are now the preferred device for browsing shopping websites, making online purchases, online searches, banking and playing games.
The survey also found that about two thirds of adults (67%) wish they spent less time on their devices.
The 67% finding is up significantly from 51% a year ago with 18-34 year olds more likely than any other age group to think they are using their smartphones and other devices too much (82%).
Women are also more likely to want to reduce time spent on their devices with 74% expressing this view compared with 61% of men.
A total of 98% of 18-75 year olds use their smartphone every day, with more than a third doing so during mealtimes and 74% saying they do so as soon as they wake up compared with 59% a year ago.
The survey shows the percentage of people who check their phone at least 50 times a day remains at 36% while the percentage who check theirs at least 100 times is also unchanged at 16%. Half of respondents (52%) say they tend to stay awake later than planned because they use their devices into the night. The number of people staying awake later than planned is up from 49% last year, and it’s up from 62% to 69% among 18-24 year olds and from 64% to 68% among those aged 25-34.
While the research shows the majority of people want to use their smartphones and other devices less, some wish they could do more with them when they do use them.
Just over a third (34%) would like to replace their existing passport with one that is integrated into their smartphone and 33% would like their driving licence integrated. A total of 18% would like to use their smartphone to unlock their house and 17% to unlock their car.
There has been an increase in the number of people who own wearables, such as smartwatches, (50% to 67%), and Smart TVs (66% to 71%) in the last twelve months. One in five respondents (20%) say they have an external security camera or video doorbell, up from 16% a year ago.
More than half of respondents use their smartphone or smartwatch to make in-person mobile payments. Almost two in five (38%) of adults regularly do so and 13% say they do so occasionally.
Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the smartphone market. A total of 37% of adults say they own an Apple phone and 38% own a Samsung phone. Apple remains the most popular brand among 18-34 year olds.
Aside from price, battery life, storage capacity and camera quality are the three most important features for consumers purchasing a smartphone.
Commenting on the findings of the Deloitte Consumer Trends report, John Kehoe, partner, Consumer & Technology Business audit and assurance group, said:
“These results re-affirm how important the smartphone is in our daily lives and show that it is likely to further consolidate its status as the most successful consumer device. While many people wish they could reduce the extensive amount of time they spend on their smartphones, it is clear that they are the preferred devices for everything from banking to online search, browsing, playing games and shopping. People are now increasingly using their phones to make in-person payments and our survey shows many would also like to use them for identity identification too, which is something that is likely to become possible in the future. The European Parliament and Council of the EU have already started to move towards the adoption of ID technology by reaching final agreement on European Digital Identity Wallets, a move which is now subject to formal approval. If approved, the wallets will serve as a form of national ID card which could be used for both online and offline public and private services across the EU.”
Entertainment
The survey included questions on entertainment. A total of 74% of respondents have access to video streaming services with the average person having more than two. Netflix is still the market leader at 62% and Disney+ continues to grow, up 3 percentage points to 36% compared to 33% in 2022.
Close to a quarter (24%) of respondents cancelled a video streaming service in the last twelve months with the main reason being that it wasn’t used enough (33%), was too expensive (24%) or they need to spend less on subscriptions due to the rising cost of living (23%).
The number of people who resubscribed to a streaming service they had previously cancelled increased from 12% to 16%, but 41% did not change their subscriptions in the current year, a figure that remains consistent with the previous year.
More than a third of subscription holders (36%) say they share access to their accounts between two or more households. The incidence of sharing is most widespread among the youngest age group with 60% of 18-24 year olds sharing an account.
A total of 36% of all adults say they would pay extra to keep sharing a video subscription account if their provider prevented it, but 7 out of 10 say they would not consider taking out a second account at full price. When it comes to paying for streaming services, the majority of respondents (31%) say they would still prefer to pay a full-price subscription with no ads.
Commenting on the entertainment findings, Colm McDonnell, partner and Head of Technology, Media, and Telecommunications, said:“We’re seeing more streaming services explore new payment models for subscribers and our reports finds that while full-price subscriptions and no ads is the most popular payment method for consumers, around 1 in 10 would prefer half-price subscriptions and 5 minutes of ads per hour during each programme or before each programme. At Deloitte, we believe providers are likely to shift from growth at all costs to making it easier for all their subscribers to get enough value for the price they pay. It is likely that providers will start to introduce an increased number of on demand tiers for customers to choose from. This will include options from cheap ad-supported offerings and gated content to premium tiers with instant access. Users may find it harder to wade through the options, but tiering could help them get more of what they want, and less of what they don’t.”

Nearly three quarters of Irish adults (68.6%) rely on their smartphones while working, at least some of the time, according to new research revealed by Samsung Ireland. This research highlights a change in work habits, especially when it comes to how people leverage technology. Almost sixty per cent of Irish people (59.5%) need technology to multitask, while the survey also revealed that the majority of Irish respondents never leave their house without their smartphone (62%).
With this research, Samsung wanted to explore the role technology plays in enabling the transition to better ways of working, including the ability to work from anywhere, multitasking and better productivity. The national survey of over 1,000 people, conducted by Opinion Matters found that the use of technology made users more productive and even became a source of inspiration to many respondents.
Smartphone Reliance
Samsung’s research revealed that people still rely heavily on their smartphones, particularly in the world of work where 7 in 10 (68.6%) rely on their smartphone devices to work, at least some of the time, with:
Almost one in four (23%) said they consistently use their mobile devices throughout a workday
A further 13% claiming they are on their devices all of the time, and
While 32.7% rely on their device at least some of the time
This also rings true in younger demographics, with three quarters of Millennials (76%) saying they rely on their smartphones to do their job, 26.3% consistently check in on their devices while working, and almost half (49.3%) claim they would feel lost without their smartphone device.
Multitasking
More than half of Irish people (60%) say they need technology to multitask. Interestingly, 35-44 year olds are 10% more likely to multi-task than their next generation, 45-54 year olds. The research revealed due to reliance on smartphones, multitasking has become easier for respondents with most Irish people revealing they regularly watch or play something on their devices even while they watch TV (63%). Over a quarter of 16–25-year-olds admit to using their phone while at the cinema (30.6%) or a friend’s birthday party (42.1%), while they are least likely to sneak a text at a christening (12.9%).
Paul Toland, Ireland Sales Lead for Samsung’s IM Division commented, “It’s incredibly interesting to see the increased adoption of technology in work environments. Our research proves that there’s a demand for more innovative devices, and we are proud to have made huge strides in this area recently through the launch of our latest range of Foldables. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 blends smartphone and tablet functionality, where users can easily run three apps on screen at the one time. Through products like this, we can see the technological advancement for productivity is becoming a priority in new device design.”
“Our customer feedback helps us deliver the best devices possible, particularly inspiring us to incorporate innovative smash-proof solutions such as Gorilla Glass Victus and Armor Aluminum frame, in our latest Flagship range. While mobiles are more prevalent, in Ireland Samsung saw a 15% increase in tablet sales in the first three quarters of 2021, highlighting consumers love for multi-device usage.”
A Source of Inspiration
Smartphones are now one of our greatest companions for both work and life, with over 82.4% of respondents claiming that the content they see on their device brings them inspiration. The research revealed that the majority of Irish people never leave their house without their smartphone (62%), while 30.3% of 16-24 year olds claim that their smartphone means more to them than most of their possessions.
When it comes to purchasing smartphones, there’s a keen interest in innovation with people wanting more from their devices. Over 70% of respondents want a device that stays charged for longer (72.8%), while other key requirements include wanting a smash-proof (61.3%) and water-proof device (59.8%) that has access to the internet from anywhere (54.5%). It is clear that respondents don’t want to spend a minute without their smartphones regardless of location, accidental drops or even if they’re out in the rain.
Quentin Doran O’Reilly, Head of Product Management said, “At Samsung we have seen first-hand a transformative change in the world of work thanks to technology, which is why we developed, and are constantly refining, the Samsung Ecosystem. Our goal is to empower people with technology, be it smartphones, tablets or wearables that integrate seamlessly. The Samsung Galaxy Ecosystem, thanks to app continuity, pursues a connected lifestyle that makes it easier and more comfortable to use Galaxy devices simultaneously or switch between them easily. From experience, it is invaluable to be able to seamlessly connect your collection of devices to your phone without spending five minutes in the settings. When working from home, I can easily join calls whilst walking using my Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Buds”.
Some people buy a new smartphone as soon as Apple, Samsung, or other manufacturers release their latest products. However, for most of us, we like to keep our mobile devices running for as long as possible and put our money into other things. Plus, putting off upgrading devices until it’s necessary also means no need to worry yet about transferring data onto a new phone or spending time on the other facets of this process. When days are busy, it’s tricky fitting in all the must-do tasks, let alone adding tech issues to the mix!
However, sooner or later, all phones start to play up and eventually need replacing. You don’t want to be left in the lurch with no smartphone to use for a time, but you also don’t want to jump the gun and buy something new before you have to. If you’re not sure how long you might get out of your current gadget, or whether you could perhaps simply book in for an affordable cell phone repair instead, here are some signs to look out for.
Super Slow Touchscreen Response Time
All smartphones misinterpret or miss taps or swipes at points. However, if your touchscreen is driving you crazy because it’s ridiculously slow to respond or register actions or simply ignores them altogether, it’s likely time to go shopping for a new device. This issue is a sign that the tech is at the end of its life. Plus, you won’t have much luck getting many tasks done on the phone, which renders it pretty obsolete anyhow.
Power Button Doesn’t Work
Another problem is if your phone won’t power on or off. If you leave your phone on all the time, this may not be the biggest deal at first, but over the long-term, this can cause considerable issues if you can’t turn the phone off to reboot it or update software, or can’t turn it back on again after taking such steps. Newer smartphones have only a few buttons on them, but the power switch is critical. When this starts playing up, your phone may be on the out.
The Phone Gets Too Hot
A common issue many users have with their smartphone is that after a while, the tech tools overheat. If this starts to happen with your device, especially when you’re not even using the gadget for calls or other tasks, you should get it checked out by a repair service person or a manufacturer’s rep.
This problem – when it overheats to a high level, and you’re worried it’s dangerous – can stem from a variety of small and large things going wrong. You don’t want the item to burn or explode on you, so it’s best to investigate the matter ASAP. Some causes can be solved relatively inexpensively, but others will show you it’s more economical to buy a new product instead.
Strange Lines or Other Issues on the Screen
Have you noticed that there are weird happenings on your device’s screen? For instance, there might be strange lines or bands that make it hard to read, or other anomalies such as flickering or jumping lights, or dead pixels on the screen. When this happens, it’s time to have the phone checked out by a qualified technician. It could have damaged components that need repairing, but often these screen occurrences point to more expensive faults that may not be possible to or worth fixing.
Phone Keeps Shutting Itself Down
Another regular problem with smartphones after they’ve been in use for a few years (or earlier, in the case of broken or faulty gadgets) is that they shut themselves down unexpectedly. If this happens as a once-off, don’t stress, but if it is a regular point of annoyance for you, you could face an issue with the phone’s battery.
You may expect that you can quickly and affordably replace the battery if this is the case, but in reality, some phones have easily-accessible batteries while others do not. If your tech tool falls in the latter category, it may cost you too much in labor costs to bother fixing it.
Buying a new smartphone can be a fun task if you love technology and having the latest machines to use. However, upgrading to a new device is also costly and time-consuming. As such, consider the factors mentioned above, along with other common phone issues, to see if you truly need to replace your gadget or can try other fixes first.
The need to communicate does not lessen with age. If anything, older people need more communication with family, friends, support services and others. As modern technology continues to evolve, many retirees find themselves in danger of being left behind or even isolated by difficult technology.
emporia is delighted to today announce four new state-of-the-art 4G devices to the UK market that respond to this demographic’s needs, by offering connectivity in the form of simple and easy-to-use phones.
The new quad announcement sees one new smartphone, two feature phones, and a touch screen hybrid feature phone join the company’s portfolio of easy-to-use devices for the growing number of retirees. “We put ease of use first, because that’s what senior citizens want. There are still millions of people who type and don’t want to swipe, so we’re staying true to our philosophy and continuing to offer the popular feature phones in addition to the smartphones,” says Eveline Pupeter, owner and CEO of emporia telecom.
The new 4G VoLTE-compatible devices are available now through emporia’s UK distributor; Eurostar Global. The partnership started earlier this year when emporia launched in the UK market, and is strengthened with the addition of the four new devices in the distributor’s growing profile.
Millington says: “There are huge opportunities within the UK retiree category to provide handsets that mirror the needs of the users, at an accessible price point. Not one user in this demographic is the same when they reach retirement at 66. Quite simply, this means those in this demographic need mobile phones that give them each the ability to communicate easily with family and friends. I’m delighted to introduce these four new devices to retail and wholesale customers across the UK through our partnership with Eurostar Global, as I’m confident they fully understand our users and mission.”
Steve Hankey, Head of Commercial and Vendor Management at Eurostar Global adds: “An ageing global population has lead to a clearly growing market, where seniors are often left isolated and overwhelmed by technology. Eurostar Global is looking forward to being part of the solution by working closely with emporia to bring its excellent portfolio of products to UK consumers. This portfolio expansion will enable us to offer even more suitable devices to retirees around the UK.”
All four new handsets feature 4G and are VoLTE compatible, providing better connectivity and coverage, but also a crucial additional benefit for many of the retiree users; better sound quality on voice calls.
UK and Ireland MD Chris Millington comments: “4G and VoLTE are essential for us to offer this demographic the best in sound in their handsets as the technology allows us to push much wider spectrums of the call to the user and coupled with extra loud sound, this is the perfect combination for addressing age-related hearing loss (presbycusis). Ultimately, it also strengthens the senior proposition for mobile networks as our phones with VoLTE fulfil the technological requirements of the operators so that they can leverage their network connectivity.”
emporiaSMART.3mini is an easy-to-use smartphone with a stylish compact size, that fulfils all the main requirements of a smartphone but with a tailored, easy-to-use interface. Key features include: 8mp and 5mp cameras, long battery life, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. The 4.95-inch touchscreen has a large, clear screen for users to navigate easily and read from. This new smartphone is built with the end user in mind with; an intuitive interface, dust and splash-proofing exterior (IP54), hearing aid-compatibility, acoustic amplification, and an emergency call button.
The emporiaSMART.3mini comes with a unique training book designed to help users get the most from their smartphone, and at their own pace. It offers a point of reference so that they can independently learn more about their device without relying on family, friends or mobile stores.
SRP: £150
emporiaTOUCHsmart is a clever combination (or hybrid) of the best elements of a smartphone and feature phone. As one of the smartest clamshell phones on the market, it is operated by touchscreen but also has a well-spaced keypad for the best of both worlds. The device has a dedicated WhatsApp button for direct access to the popular messaging app. Like all emporia phones, it also has an emergency assistance call function, camera, radio and torch, and is dust and splash-proof thanks to its nano-coating (IP54).
SRP: £150
emporiaACTIVE is emporia’s latest bar phone. It has extra-large, illuminated keys, a large display with easy to read text and the optional high contrast. It is hearing aid compatible and has an emergency call function, a camera, and an alarm clock. This feature phone is ideal for users who have no need for smart features like the internet or WhatsApp, but do require a device with practical applications, geared towards their hearing and dexterity abilities.
SRP: £90
emporiaACTIVEglam is a clamshell, or flip, device, for users who are looking for a stylish yet simple to use feature phone. Like the emporiaACTIVE, the ACTIVEglam also runs on the AndroidGo operating system and offers the same essential features like illuminated keys, emergency call function, hearing aid compatibility and a camera; in a compact and secure design.
SRP: £100
Studies* commissioned by emporia have shown that older people want to retain independence in their lives – and this includes using the latest means of communication. “Retirees don’t want to have to ask someone how to send a photo via WhatsApp, email or SMS; they simply want to do it.”
“In our research, we found that more than 90% of those surveyed say that they value contact with relatives and friends. With the embedded WhatsApp button on our smart devices, they can be more involved in their families and friends’ lives – a simple picture share, or video call can strengthen that communication,” says Pupeter.
Millington adds: “For many in retirement, and facing retirement at the new state pension age of 66, they are taking daily decisions on spending and on the value they get from purchases. Their mobile phone is something they need to get maximum value from, not just in the cost of purchase, but in they way they can use it to do what they want. For many, who may have been given a device by someone else, the technology is not right for them and they will benefit from buying something which is designed specifically with them in mind.”
emporia is the European leader in easy-to-use devices for the growing number of retirees. Having recently appointed Chris Millington as UK and Ireland MD and officially launched in this market, these new feature and smartphones add to the portfolio of devices aimed at improving communication for this demographic in the form of a ‘simple to understand’ phone.
