WHOOP data reveals Ireland Ranks as the World’s Worst Sleepers

New research published by WHOOP, the human performance company, shows Irish members have earned the unenviable title of the world’s worst sleepers, according to its 2024 Year in Review report.
The report shows that Irish members, who use WHOOP wearable technology to track activity, recovery, stress, and sleep, recorded the lowest average REM sleep globally, clocking in at just 20.5% of our nightly sleep stages. REM sleep, a critical stage for cognitive function and emotional processing, remains elusive for many in Ireland. Belgium and the Netherlands follow closely behind, with averages of 20.6% and 20.8%, respectively.

Regional insights provide a more nuanced view of the nation’s sleep habits. Counties such as Wicklow, Cavan, and Sligo led the charge in sleep performance, with Wicklow achieving an impressive overall average sleep score of 80.47%. These disparities suggest that local factors—ranging from lifestyle to environmental influences—may play a significant role in determining sleep quality.

Despite poor Irish results, global trends show an increased awareness of the importance of sleep by younger generations. WHOOP data shows Generation Z (born between 1997-2012) leads in REM sleep globally, with an average of 21.54%. This is closely followed by Millennials (1981 – 1996) at 21.45%. Gen X members (1965-1980) averaged 19.9%, while Boomers (1955 –1964) trailed further behind with just 18.4%.

These findings suggest that younger generations are carrying the torch for good sleep quality, not just in Ireland, but across the globe. In contrast, older generations, while often consistent in their sleep schedules, may face greater challenges in achieving deep, restorative rest.
To combat this challenge and enable members to get the best quality sleep possible to aid optimal performance, the best sleepers on WHOOP recommend the following:
  • Stick to a Regular Sleep Schedule: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day helps regulate your body’s internal clock, improving the quality of your sleep.
  • Create an Ideal Sleep Environment: Ensure your bedroom is conducive to sleep by keeping it dark, quiet, and cool. Using blackout curtains, eye masks, earplugs, and maintaining a comfortable mattress and pillow can contribute to more restful sleep.
  • Establish a Bedtime Routine: Engaging in relaxing activities before bed, such as reading, practicing deep breathing, or taking a warm bath, can signal to your body that it’s time to wind down, helping you fall asleep more easily.
  • Reduce Screen Time in the Evening: Limiting exposure to screens in the evening reduces blue light exposure, which can disrupt melatonin production and interfere with sleep. Aim to avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime.
  • Monitor Caffeine and Alcohol Consumption: Drinking caffeine in the afternoon can negatively affect sleep quality, and alcohol is often reported to disrupt sleep patterns. Limiting these substances, especially in the hours before bed, can enhance your sleep.
As holistic wellness takes centre stage, Briain Curtin, VP of Global Marketing at WHOOP, highlighted the company’s growing influence in Ireland and the rise in member engagement in 2024: “As WHOOP grows in Ireland, it’s inspiring to see members deeply engaging with their health data. With more robust and personalised insights provided by WHOOP, members are recognising the importance of sleep, recovery, and rest for performance, which is a huge step forward. These trends not only reflect national progress but also empower individuals to make lasting health changes, and perform at their personal best, which is ultimately our goal.”
By addressing the specific challenges Irish members face, highlighted in this year’s report, WHOOP aims to empower Irish members to unlock their full potential not just in 2025, but for many years to come.

No Sleeping On The Job As Boom Bangs The Collaboration Drum!

Manufacturer Boom Collaboration has hosted a special interactive workshop, showcasing two top products and looking at wider conferencing trends – including if people actually wear their pyjamas on video calls!

Its ‘Unlocking The Power of Collaboration’ online event, officially introduced the Boom HALO video bar and MAGNA Pro PTZ camera – and attracted a global audience from the UK, US, Europe, Middle East, Asia and South America.

Participants discovered how the two groundbreaking products are designed to revolutionise collaboration in the modern workspace, based on a theme of ‘smart people need intelligent gear’.

Co-Founders Fredrik Hörnkvist and Holli Hulett demonstrated the intelligent features of the expandable HALO, which delivers crystal-clear audio and 4K video with enhanced AI facial framing and speaker tracking. Up to eight additional microphones/speakers can be added too.

They also explored the versatility and precision of the Boom MAGNA Pro 4K highly-responsive tracking PTZ camera, designed for meetings, lectures and live streams – thanks to a massive 27x zoom, AI capabilities and a built-in gravity sensor. All products are available from UK distributor Westcoast.

Insights on optimising collaboration strategies and spaces through cutting-edge technologies were also part of the 45-minute session, hosted from the manufacturer’s Texas HQ.

“We ended the event with some audience participation around some of the biggest problems around video meetings today,” explained Hörnkvist. “Insufficient audio, bandwidth limitations and making sure everyone is seen and heard were some of the top concerns.”

Hulett added: “We also looked at the best things about video meetings where working from anywhere, cost savings and also being able to wear pyjama bottoms on calls scored highly, as well as being able to hang out with your pets! It’s clear the appeal of remote meetings continues to evolve and Boom Collaboration is determined to remain at the industry forefront, spearheaded by our flagship HALO and MAGNA Pro innovations.”

Sleep better with Google this World Sleep Day

Google searches for Sleep are at an all time high. How can I fall asleep faster? Why can’t I sleep? How much sleep do I need? Did I sleep well? are just some of the questions people turn to Google for help with everyday. Google Search trends are telling us that phrases like “sleep,” “sleep apnea” and “night routine” are trending more than ever and with World Sleep Day coming up on the 17th March, here is some Google products and features that can help to create routines for winding down, enjoying a deeper rest and waking up feeling your best.

How your Pixel phone can help you rest undisturbed

Many people keep their phone on their nightstand but with that comes the temptation to  scroll through emails and social media, or check every notification instead of getting some rest. Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7 and Pixel 6a come with features that can help people avoid this. Flip to Shhh puts the phone into Do Not Disturb mode when laid face down, and Digital Wellbeing lets users manage time spent on the phone while setting limits on certain websites and apps. When it’s in Bedtime mode, Pixel can also help people understand the quality of their sleep using AI to analyze audio such as coughs and snores during the night.

How Pixel Buds Pro can tune out the world

Whether it’s bustling city noise or a snoring partner, it can be hard to find peace and quiet when it’s time to wind down. Pixel Buds Pro have Active Noise Cancellation with Silent Seal to help block outside noise. Pair with Pixel Watch or Pixel Phones for a mindful meditation from YouTube Music in the evening. See our Pixel Buds Pro review and pixel watch strap review and if you need a case look here.

How the Pixel Watch and Fitbit Versa 4 detects personal sleep trends

Pixel Watch and the Fitbit Versa 4 are both equipped with sleep tracking features that are powered by Fitbit’s sleep technology. Combining accelerometer data, heart rate variability (the changes in time between beats) and proven machine learning algorithms, Pixel Watch and the Fitbit Versa 4 can estimate how long people spend in light, deep and REM sleep stages, as well as time awake each night. Users can wake up to their Sleep Score and better understand personal sleep trends so they can experiment and make adjustments that work for them.

How Nest Hub (2nd Gen) can sense sleep quality
Prefer not to wear a watch to bed? Nest Hub (2nd Gen) with Sleep Sensing tracks sleep without a camera, using a low-energy radar that analyzes movement and breathing. Wake up with gentle sounds and a soft change in light then check out the sleep summary to see sleep length, disturbances like coughing or snoring and whether the bedroom temperature got too low or high.

How Google Home app can automate the bedtime routine

Setting a consistent routine is one of the best ways to improve sleep over time. By creating a Personal or Household routine in the Google Home app, people can cue actions like turning off the lights or the TV at a certain time and playing relaxing meditation music on the Nest Hub (2nd Gen). If the room gets too hot or cold at night, the Nest Hub can be used the following night to make adjustments like changing the temperature on the Nest Thermostat.

Fitbit adds Premium Sleep Profile and we check out the Fitbit Sense

Fitbit have launched a new feature which is the Premium Sleep Profile and what a great to to test out their Fitbit Sense which has just arrived and our first time to check out the brand on site which we look forward too, on first look at the device it feels premium and has more features than I had expected in comparison to some other similar products I have here in for review and I quite like it.

With health and fitness being a daily part of people’s lives now people want more features and Fitbit have launched a new option which is great for those who track their sleep never mind the stress something which I both lack and have an abundance of so for me an ideal time to check out what is on offer here.

This new Fitbit Premium feature offers a new longitudinal analysis of your sleep patterns. It also makes your sleep data even easier to interpret with fun animal characters, so you can take steps to improve your sleep quality and, in turn, your overall health.

How does it work?

Wear your Fitbit device to sleep for at least 14 nights per calendar month to receive an assessment. The more you wear the device to sleep, the more precise the evaluation. Sleep can vary significantly from night to night, so it’s helpful to analyze your sleep data over a longer period from your own sleep environment to uncover more insights into your habits and how you can improve.

As a Premium member you will see your Sleep Profile, including your sleep animal and monthly sleep analysis, on the first day of every month. Animals can change from month to month, and data collected throughout the month will inform the next animal you receive the following month. There is no “ideal” animal – each one can be used to better understand your sleep patterns and how you can improve your sleep quality.

Tech Review – HIGHEVER Bluetooth Beanie for sleep and sports #Tech #Sports #Sleep

I have reviewed several beanie hats in the past which are an effective idea and simple mostly used in the Winter but this model here can be used in both sports and used as a sleep aide.  This is a really comfortable beanie to wear and is washable too which is nice of course and has simple to use controls on the front identical to controls I have used in similar beanie hats before. You can listen to your music radio and take calls which is handy and it can be also used as a sleep mask which again is handy with the early bright mornings we have now in the Summer.

Having tested in all scenarios this is really comfortable and does not clamp on your head and the speakers are placed either side and can be removed. The thing I find most interesting is how good the sound is with this and much better than I expected, it will not blow you away like some earbuds or headphones but the sound quality is pretty decent and is nice to see. This is ideal for those who like sports and like sleep and is not expensive either and worth a look in my book to try out and costs around 18 euro so for the price it is a nice gift to start with or just something to have at hand at home.. See the video for more below…

Tech Review – QuiteOn3 the worlds smallest noise cancelling earbuds to help with sleep #QuiteOn3 #Sleep #Tech

I have tested many earbuds over the years and seen how well the tech has got better in them and how they have gotten smaller in size and getting better features but these have to be the smallest earbuds fullstop nothing comes close to the size of them in my collection but these are not for your music experience they are to help block out the outside world when you need to get some sleep or even peace for that matter and they are half the size of the QuiteOn2, you can see both in the unboxing below for more and if this is the shape of things to come would you like your earbuds this size in general??

These are small no doubt about it and it is great to see how these have changed from their previous iteration and they do just as good a job you do not need any apps you do not listen to music with these it must be made clear you just take them out of the really fancy case they come in and pick the right tips and let them sit in your ears for 15 mins and they get the perfect seal.

Once in you can sit or lie back and forget about what is going on outside because you will not hear it and get along with you sleep or peace and that is how simple this is and how they work, the previous model you had an on/off switch which is gone this time which I liked and was good for testing but this is where some room wa smade to get these to the size they are now which is something else..

QuiteOn2 vs QuiteOn3 techbuzzireland

Some of the most common noises that interrupt sleep are low-frequency sounds from heating  systems, appliances, traffic, airplanes, snoring and noisy neighbors. QuietOn 3’s ANC technology  eliminates ambient sound by automatically generating opposite waveforms to nullify the low  frequencies, resulting in a much quieter and more peaceful environment for sleep.

To ensure maximum comfort, each pair of QuietOn 3 comes with four sizes of eartips. With no  wireless setup or connectivity required, and automatic charging in the included case, QuietOn 3  earbuds are always ready to pop in and provide more restful sleep.

The QuietOn 3 earbuds charge in the included carrying case, which contains its own battery to  guarantee a full-charge at all times. A single charge provides 28 hours of use, so the earbuds have  the power to last all day, or for several nights.

They might seem expensive for some over the traditional method of using cheaper earplugs but they are excellent and look cool and are some piece of tech that comes with a quality charging case too. At the end of the day the big question is do they work and the answer is yes..

First look at QuiteOn 3, World’s Smallest Active Noise-Cancelling Earbuds Specifically Designed to Improve Sleep

Earlier this year we checked out the QuiteOn 2 and I was impressed with how these work, Given they are expensive and one asks how do they compare to traditional methods to block out sound they do a really good job and they have to tested to realise just how good they are. The new model which has just landed are half the size and come in a really premium case and look great and it shows how technology is getting better as time goes on, If this is company can do this I look forward to seeing if traditional earbuds can get this small.

The new QuietOn 3 earbuds are the first earbuds small enough to fit entirely inside the ear, making  them the only active noise cancelling (ANC) sleep solution that is comfortable enough for everyone,  including side sleepers. The superior comfort and pure Nordic quietude lets users enjoy a good  night’s sleep for better overall health and a readiness to tackle each day with a clear, rested mind. According to QuietOn CEO Jussi Lemiläinen, QuietOn 3 debuts at an ideal time – as consumer  interest in the benefits of sleep health is at an all-time high, thanks to better sleep education and new  tracking devices.

Stay tuned for the full review soon and check out the video below for a comparison to the last model..

QuietOn Launches QuietOn 3, World’s Smallest Active Noise-Cancelling Earbuds Specifically Designed to Improve Sleep Quality

Reinforcing its mission to optimize human performance through  improved sleep, acclaimed Finnish tech innovator QuietOn™ today announced the launch of QuietOn  3, the world’s smallest active noise cancelling earbud that significantly reduces low-frequency noise to  deliver Nordic calm and quietude regardless of one’s sleeping environment.

“Everything that we want in life – professional success, personal well-being, physiological health – begins with a good night’s sleep. And a good night’s sleep begins with quietude,” Lemiläinen said.  “QuietOn 3 leverages breakthrough ANC technology to create a better environment for sleep,  effectively eliminating the low-frequency noises that so often disrupt our sleep.”

“While white noise machines and other noise-masking devices help with lulling one to sleep, the  addition of a new noise to overpower background noises can actually prevent or disrupt deep sleep,”  continued Lemiläinen. “QuietOn 3 and its breakthrough ANC technology works to eliminate noise to  create a sense of calm and quietude that increases both quantity and quality of one’s sleep.”

Additionally, by significantly reducing the earbud’s dimensions, QuietOn succeeded in making the  impossible possible – creating the first ANC earbud that fits entirely in the ear, with zero protrusion.  Engineering QuietOn 3 to be even smaller than previous versions was a challenge, but the company  exceeded expectations by reducing the physical size while increasing battery life.

The size reduction can be traced to QuietOn 3’s sleep-focused design, which eliminates the need for  transmitters, receivers and other components typically found in music earbuds. The lack of these  audio-specific components also enables operation with zero electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation.

QuiteON 3 techbuzzireland

“The introduction of new technologies like circadian-based lighting and sleep trackers underscore that  high-quality sleep is now a central focus of people’s efforts to improve their general health and well being,” Lemiläinen added. “With QuietOn 3, we look forward to joining this movement by demonstrating the critical importance of quietude to sleep performance and, ultimately, overall  wellbeing and human performance.”

Tech Review – QuiteOn Sleep earbuds. #QuiteOn #Tech #Sleep

Have you a noisy neighbour, neighbours that leave their dogs barking outside all day and night, assholes that cut their grass at 8 am in the morning or building going on? Well I do at times and sick of it like many of my other neighbours however you may ask have I tried earplugs and the answer is yes but they do not cut it, these however change the game and use ANC in a different form than we traditionally use it in our headphones and earbuds which blocks the outside world, THESE EARBUDS DO NOT PLAY MUSIC so lets get that out of the way and these cost near 200 euro so are they worth the heavy price to pay? In short yes they are if you have money to spend..

ANC is a technology that pushed up earbud and headphone prices when launched and not it has trickled down to earbuds and headphones costing under a hundred euros and having reviewed the most true wireless earbuds in Ireland there is several pairs we have reviewed costing little that use ANC technology and this also applies to headphones, whilst these may look a bit different to your typical earbud they do look nice and you do not need to pair to your smartphone you do not need an app and you simply place in the ear get the right fit and most importantly the right tip to get the best performance, there is a simple switch to allow the noise in and one to turn it off and once turned off you enter bliss, no noise no nothing. You can even just wear them around the house if you like..

These as mentioned have ambient mode so you can use them in a noisy environment like a bus or train journey or if your office is hectic you can switch off the hustle and get your work done with no interruption. One could also argue there is headsets out there that can do the same which is true however these are dedicated to just blocking the noise with no controls to manage except hearing mode or full ANC mode. Active noise control (ANC), active noise cancelling, and active noise reduction (ANR) are methods where an unwanted sound is reduced by adding another sound specifically made to cancel it out. QuiteOn active noise cancelling earplugs use a microphone to sample the sound, and a speaker to create a phase-shifted sound that cancels the original sound.

How they work.

In QuietOn Sleep, the microphone is located outside, as with many other active noise cancelling devices. This is called Feed-forward Active Noise Cancelling. The internal mic system used in QuietOn Original is called Feedback Active Noise Cancelling. In active noise cancelling, the difference is that the outside microphone has a time advantage over the internal mic which enables noise cancelling to work at higher frequencies. With their first and second models, QuietOn is proud to be the smallest active noise cancelling device on the market today. And just now they have version 3 now on Indiegogo.

If you are one that lacks sleep and wants some more peace in life these are something to check out for me they have helped and have improved my sleep.
