Review – The Nokia WiFi Beacon Trio. #Nokia #Beacon #Mesh #WiFi

Nokia is a brand people are well familiar with and that is mobiles to most but they play a huge role around the world when it comes to mobile networks and communications and are also playing huge role in the 5G area but they are also powering in house communications for office and home and have several products on the market right now to enhance your connectivity experience which is welcome. I own some 250 nokia devices myself and this is my first time to try out their solutions to connectivity at home.

The Nokia Beacon WiFi trio comes in a well presented box giving you all you need including plugs to get you set up very quickly it will take around ten minutes to set up and get going you get three towers in the box and one is connected to your existing router and the other two can be placed where you might find them best suited, For me I am a new build and find even bluetooth products an issue here due to the materials used in the house and this is a welcome addition, I have tested other repeaters and extenders before and they have all boosted my experience in some form or in some areas of the house. The app that comes along with this is also good and easy to follow and will help you set up the whole system from scratch.

Due to the lockdown at present whilst testing our speeds where slow most of the time and this was done by the provider to give a balanced approach for all customers to have some kind of connection to the web this not only applied to my broadband but my phone and we did have a blackout over the last few weeks which did not bode well with the public but this is how things work and it happneds to all networks from time to time be it from over capacity or a fault, I am no expert when it comes to such or WiFi solutions but I know it has boosted performance in the house between upstairs and downstairs from where I work and I will be leaving out all the technical jargon to simplify how it works.

The Beacon Trio is a mesh system and many have asked me about MESH and what it is which is simply a home system that can give better stability and speed in your house with multiple nodes placed in your home which for people with bigger houses would be a better solution by connecting to the nearest one based on your location in the house,Just like the Nokia set up one connects to your main router then you place the rest where it suits best.

Once set up you are good to go

Speed test samples below, Testing with several devices connected during this pandemic showed a constant better speed with the Nokia Beacon VS Virgin especially upstairs in my house which suits me perfectly and for the kids in the house. Even with more connected including tv and other peripherals the speed was better in general  but somewhat slower than when I actually got the kit at first but having said that you do not get the advertised speeds you pay for but overall the connection is better and stable for all devices which in short and with the bandwith being used now on the network it still gave better results.

I will come back to this again later on to get more results and speed tests for comparsion when we are in more normal times rather than now due to the virus to get more results,I did have some initial screenshots of tests but lost them after changing devices an not backing up.. Silly me, But they where better and still even with these speeds overall the stability is enhanced greatly and no buffering compared to using the standard set up and as noted upstairs in particular showed great results which has been a problem for me the last while when working in my little studio as I work both downstairs and upstairs during the day and of late with people around all day it is required for some quite space on calls and so on.

The design of the towers are nice but rather big and on par with our existing router which we plug this into it does not replace your current router in case you are wondering like any other offering similar you are still paying the same money to your current provider, The design is slender but on the bigger side and I would like to see a direct plug in option to a socket from Nokia rather than having towers but having said that it is no huge deal. The benefits here outweigh anything else especially with a large home like we have now and this covers up to  420 square meters which ha sproven to kill blackspots in my house which is great.  For the security concious we have 64 bit and 128 bit WEP and WPA support that includes WPA-PSK and WPA

I have my router set to 2.4 and 5Ghz but the Nokia beacon picks the best channel and beacon for you to connect to within the property all done without you knowing what is going on in the background but if you look on the app you can get information as to what is connected to what beacon which is cool. Overall this is an ideal piece of kit to have in the house especially if you have lots of tech which many homes now have today espeically with IoT and other connected devices like smart lights and virtual assistants and with most houses today we have more mobile phones at hand and this is a solution to stop congestion in the house and enjoy 4K streaming and more with no buffering it is easy to set up too and not too expensive. One thing for sure and I have said before Nokia is in a league of its own when it comes to communcations and they offer much more than many people know about which is mobile phones.

Last month Nokia announced a few new handsets to their line up which is rather interesting including a future-proof 5G device and a retro 5310, The all new 1.3 is now available to buy online from Littlewoods but you are going to pay much more extra for it rather than the listed estimated price it was given which was slated at €79 from vodafone, Given the phone is sim free you expect it to be a tad more expensive but it is littlewoods we are dealing with here.  There will be more availability soon and you will get it cheaper.

Nokia publishes People & Planet Report 2019 as it looks to keep people connected through the pandemic. #Nokia

Nokia has today published its annual sustainability report, covering the company’s sustainability performance in 2019 and focusing on four priority areas: improving people’s lives with technology, climate, conducting business with integrity, and people.

 

The publication of Nokia’s People & Planet Report 2019  coincides with the COVID-19 pandemic. With entire countries in lockdown, and people asked to stop or minimize their physical interactions, network traffic has been spiking around the world, demonstrating the critical roles of networks and connectivity.

 

“Nokia’s People & Planet Report 2019 looks at how we can improve the lives of people – our employees, customers, and wider society – and better care for our environment at the same time. The context our report is being published in has changed because of the coronavirus pandemic, but the fundamental issues remain the same, and, if anything, now have greater urgency because of the challenge the world faces,” said Rajeev Suri, President and CEO of Nokia, in a blog post.

“Trends and technologies that were already happening will speed up. So more remote working and video conferencing will increase the need for better connectivity. The power of 5G and lower latency times won’t be abstract terms for the majority of people, but suddenly critical for everything from digital health to financial trading, to virtual classrooms, to government and international diplomacy,” he continued.

“We are playing our part to keep the world connected through the pandemic. And we want to play our part in building a better world for everyone when this crisis is over,” Suri said.

 

Nokia’s sustainability achievements in 2019 included:

  • In 2019, the networks Nokia supplied to its customers supported 6.4 billion subscriptions worldwide
  • In October 2019, Nokia completed its first external human rights assessment for the Global Network Initiative (GNI). The GNI board found Nokia had made good faith efforts over time to implement the GNI Principles on freedom of expression and privacy.
  • As part of Nokia’s inclusion and diversity work in 2019, Nokia closed the unexplained pay gap based on pay equity analysis we conducted with Mercer.
  • In May 2019, Nokia launched its Helping Hands volunteering and engagement program for employees. Through Nokia’s community investment programs, the company has cumulatively improved the lives of 1,633,500 people globally since 2016 – a strong performance against its 2025 target of 2,000,000 people.
  • At the United Nations 2019 climate summit, Nokia joined a group of 87 companies in committing to recalibrate its existing science-based climate targets in line with the 1.5°C warming scenario.
  • Nokia delivered zero-emission products to over 150 customers globally.
  • 46% less energy was used on average in the customer base-station sites Nokia modernized in 2019 compared to those where its customers did not modernize.

 

The People and Planet Report 2019 is prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative GRI Standards and is compliant with the UN Global Compact. The selected key sustainability indicators have been assured by the independent auditor of Nokia, PricewaterhouseCoopers Oy.

Nokia introduces new Wi-Fi 6 mesh router and technology innovations to deliver ultimate gigabit experience in a 5G world. #Nokia #5G #WiFi

Nokia today announced it is adding a new Wi-Fi 6 Beacon to its whole-home WiFi portfolio, helping operators to deliver a powerful user experience. Providing a high-capacity, high-performance in-home solution, the new Beacon 6 uses Wi-Fi 6 to deliver 40 percent faster speeds than previous Wi-Fi generations.

 To further enhance the in-home experience, Nokia is also adding low-latency technology built on Nokia Bell Labs innovations to its Wi-Fi portfolio. Drastically improving residential Wi-Fi networks, the Nokia Beacon 6 provides operators with an easy to install solution that can support low-latency applications such as gaming and gigabit speeds essential for creating a seamless end-to-end 5G experience.
 

Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight said: “The benefits of 5G are going to change user experiences and customers’ expectations. The blend of the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology, low latency performance and in-home Wi-Fi mesh solutions linked to 5G will allow operators to deliver a seamless communications platform for next generation applications and solutions.”

 

Currently more than 25 percent of homes globally are connected to a Wi-Fi network and there are about 5 billion Wi-Fi-connected devices in the home including home computing, smart TVs and smart home devices. To cope with this growth, operators and end-users are investing in devices that support Wi-Fi 6, a new Wi-Fi standard that improves speed by at least four times in dense areas and reduces latency by 75 percent.

 

The Beacon 6 is the first Nokia WiFi device to showcase several new technologies working seamlessly together. This includes:

  • Support for Wi-Fi 6 which improves the overall speed, performance and latency of a Wi-Fi network with OFDMA, a modulation scheme used in 5G that allows the access point to talk to more devices at once.
  • The Beacon 6 introduces Wi-Fi Certified EasyMesh3 and is fully interoperable with 3rd party Wi-Fi Certified EasyMesh products for easy install. Nokia’s new mesh controller capabilities ensure the best Wi-Fi performance is achieved in the home by managing channel selection and adding advanced interference capabilities that are unique in the market.
  • Nokia Bell Labs low-latency innovations including PI24 algorithm (available 2H20) that consistently improves latency even in congested environments. With PI2, latency is reduced from hundreds of milliseconds to 20 milliseconds which can be further reduced to <5 milliseconds when paired with L4S in the core network. L4S is currently being standardized by the IETF5 and builds on Bell Labs innovations that eliminate jitters and delays that can impact the user experience in low-latency applications like gaming and virtual reality.

The introduction of Nokia’s Beacon 6 and new low-latency innovations will play an important role in helping operators deliver a powerful 5G user experience at home. With Nokia’s Beacon 6, operators can leverage the speed and performance of Wi-Fi 6 to seamlessly off-load 5G mobile traffic to the Wi-Fi network, allowing end users connected to a 5G wireless network to go from the car into the home without any disruptions. This is critical for operators looking to free up expensive 5G spectrum for higher ARPU use cases like Industry 4.0 and IoT.

Nokia and Irish Aviation Authority deploy next-generation air traffic control network for the North Atlantic #Nokia #Aviation #IAA

Nokia has today announced successful deployment of the Irish Aviation Authority’s (IAA) next-generation air traffic control network at its new West Ireland disaster recovery center. As part of the deal, Nokia supplied its IP/MPLS networking products, which have been specifically designed for this level of mission-critical application.

 

The new, high-bandwidth IP/MPLS network will increase capacity and ensure smooth operation of new, more demanding air traffic control (ATC) applications. It will also provide support for legacy, non-IP applications, including end-to-end communications between radar stations. The IAA also benefited from Nokia’s professional services offering for network design, architecture, integration and deployment. Following successful deployment of the network, Nokia will continue to provide IAA with long-term support and maintenance services.

The network was deployed in early 2019 and is currently in service. It has successfully carried out a number of live trials across multiple airspace sectors in the key North Atlantic region, delivering critical voice and radar services to controllers over the new Nokia IP/MPLS platform.

The successful deployment of the network precedes the expected doubling of global air traffic by 2030. The North Atlantic airspace is one of the most crowded airspaces in the world and the IAA will need more capacity as traffic grows. Modern ATC management applications can scale to meet the demand but require a different kind of network connectivity based on IP, such as Nokia’s IP/MPLS.

 

Nokia has a long history building mission-critical networks for critical infrastructure such as air traffic control. Its IP/MPLS networking products are designed from the start to support legacy applications, as well as the latest capabilities for high-availability, mission-critical connectivity.

 

The Nokia-IAA deal is critical to the IAA’s roadmap to seamlessly migrate critical services to a fully operational next-gen network. The IAA plans to continue its work with Nokia, from design to deployment and into the future.

 

Billy Hann, Director of ATM Operations and Strategy for the IAA, said: “Given our responsibility to ensure the smooth operation of the North Atlantic airspace, it has been crucial that Nokia earn our trust. The quality and reliability of its technology and the thoroughness and collaborative approach of its teams has been first class throughout the entire migration process. We are very pleased and confident in the performance of the new network.”

 

Jochen Apel, Head of Global Transportation, Nokia, said: “From the initial proof-of-concept through to the final deployment and launch of the new network, we have been impressed and pleased to work closely with the IAA on this highly-critical application. Working side-by-side with its team, we ensured that the new IP/MPLS network seamlessly migrated all of its legacy applications and supported the new applications with the highest standards of reliability.”

Nokia this morning have dropped a new video titled “Our Vision” which is basically promoting itself and what is to come in the future,we are all aware of the recent deal with Alcatel Lucent and we are also all aware that they can now start making devices soon and im sure plenty of us are waiting to see what Nokia have prepared for us this year,there has been several rumors of what may be coming but we shall leave them alone..

Unboxing and First impressions #Nokia #Lumia830 Gold by @Tiwaash #Goldie

The world was excited ever since the leaked news of Nokia Lumia Limited Edition started to surface and every Nokia fanboy wanted the Gold Limited edition Lumia830 and Lumia930 to be theirs, and we were no exception to it and finally after a lot of sourcing we bring you the Unboxing and First impressions of the Nokia Lumia830 Limited Edition, Black Gold.

I was so excited when I received the parcel, I know it was going to be special. And read on to know what was there in the package and how is the Nokia Lumia830 Limited Edition different from the usual Nokia Lumia830.

Package:

Well to be honest I wasn’t really impressed with the package, it was the same slide-out type box exactly like the other Nokia Lumia packages with the photos on the face and the back of the box and name of the device on the side with the colour indicator and “Limited Edition” badging.

Cut open the tag and you cannot stop smiling. You are greeted with the Gold Edition Nokia Lumia830, I had the black gold combo and it looked just great. Apart from the device the package was meager and nothing else to excite about with the travel adapter, a couple of booklets, battery and  a USB data cable in the simplest manner possible.

Being a limited edition I expected the package to be more generous like a “Limited edition” case and ear phones would have been a welcome premium offering as the phone comes with MixRadio pre-installed.

What is special in “Limited Edition”?

Anything with a “Limited Edition” badging creates excitement and so did the Nokia Lumia830. The Limited Edition was restricted to the paint job on the device. The Limited Edition Nokia Lumia830 was available in Black- gold or White- gold colour schemes with Gold colour used for the Metal casing with the buttons, the Nokia badging on the back and the battery space below the back cover.

First Impressions:

I love the Black- gold colour scheme on this device. It gives the device a premium upmarket feel and with “Limited Edition” stamp its a rare device to own. Other than the paint job, the Limited Edition Nokia Lumia830 is identical to the normal Nokia Lumia830, its light, slim, has a 10 mp snapper on the back with PureView technology and an LED flash, the 3.5 mm jack and micro-USB port are also stationed at exactly the spot and all other specs remain the same.

I enjoy the feel of the Matte- black finish on the device with brushed metal in Gold, this device will definitely make you stand out in the crowd. Enjoy the gallery here.

Nokia will be back.. Nokia cites its looking for a partner #Nokia #Comeback

There is much talk of late bout Nokia these days ,good and bad but Nokia are still a company without the handset business,they thrive elsewhere,Of late the argument lies as to who killed who and it stems back to the Elop era again whom some directly blame him for failure,even today the argument continues and is much discussed with big differences in opinion but fact of the matter is Nokia have reassured us they plan to come back and when they do it will be great news to its fans and perhaps not for some..Remember it will not be until late 2016 before we see anything but it gives them time to come up with a good plan and hopefully some killer handsets

Nokia have stated the following..

The right path back to mobile phones for Nokia is through a brand-licensing model. That means identifying a partner that can be responsible for all of the manufacturing, sales, marketing and customer support for a product.

If and when we find a world-class partner who can take on those responsibilities, we would work closely with them to guide the design and technology differentiation, as we did with the Nokia N1 Android tablet. That’s the only way the bar would be met for a mobile device we’d be proud to have bear the Nokia brand, and that people will love to buy.
