Netflix arrives on Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max. #Netflix #Nesthub #Google

The kitchen is a popular place for smart displays in many homes, and for good reason. Whether you’re listening to music, getting the news or catching up on a popular TV show, your Nest Hub keep you entertained while you’re prepping dinner or doing the dishes. It’s also the ultimate cooking companion, with access to tons of YouTube videos ranging from cooking clips to how-to videos. And now, for the first time on any smart display, you can add watching Netflix to your list of kitchen activities: Starting today, Netflix is available on Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max.

The only display for your Netflix fix
Netflix is rolling out on Nest smart displays globally wherever the service and Nest devices are currently available. If you have a  Netflix subscription, simply link your account in the Google Home or Assistant app and you can play Netflix movies, TV shows and documentaries by using your voice. Say, “Hey Google, play Queer Eye” to start streaming instantly, or try, “Hey Google, open Netflix” to scroll through select content and start watching with a simple tap. Hands tied up while you’re cooking? Just pause, play or skip forward with a simple ask.

Hands tied up, but still want to watch? Just ask
Maybe your hands are dirty from cooking, and you don’t want to touch your screen while finding something to watch. By simply using your voice, you can stream many of the services you’re subscribed to.

The smart display with the most entertainment
Now you might even look forward to the nightly post-dinner clean up when using your Nest display as a kitchen TV: You’re also able to cast from your compatible mobile devices to your Nest Hub from streaming services like Disney+,  Prime Video and thousands of other apps that have mobile cast support by opening the streaming service’s mobile app and tapping the Cast icon.

Catching all your favorite shows on your Nest display just got a little more affordable, too: Head over to the Google Store for deals on Nest devices, that are running over the next few weeks. With so many entertainment options on your Nest smart display, your biggest challenge now might just be deciding what to watch.

Goodbye Stars, Hello Thumbs, Netflix introduces new rating system. #Netflix

Today Netflix are changing the way you can tell us which stories you love, and which ones you’re just not that into.

Netflix are retiring their five-star rating system and replacing it with a simpler and more intuitive thumbs-up and thumbs-down. A thumbs-up tells Netflix that you like something and want to see similar suggestions. A thumbs-down lets them know you aren’t interested in watching that title and  should stop suggesting it to you. You can still search for it, but they heard what you were trying to tell them — you aren’t a fan — and it will no longer show up on your homepage.

Netflix says….

The star rating you see next to each title is being replaced with a personalized % Match score. This score is a prediction of what Netflix thinks you may enjoy watching, based on your own unique tastes. The % Match is based solely on our algorithms analyzing your individual viewing habits and behavior — it is not a measure of overall popularity across the service.

Netflix has had star ratings for much of our history, but we’ve learned through over a year of testing that while we’ve used stars to help you personalize your suggestions, many of our members are confused about what they do.

That’s because we’ve all gotten used to star ratings on e-commerce and review apps, where rating contributes to an overall average, and the star rating shown next to a restaurant or a pair of shoes is an average of all the reviewers. On those apps, being a reviewer can be fun and helpful to others, but the primary goal isn’t always to help you get better suggestions.

In contrast, when people see thumbs, they know that they are used to teach the system about their tastes with the goal of finding more great content. That’s why when we tested replacing stars with thumbs we saw an astounding 200% increase in ratings activity.

For members who have provided star ratings in the past, we will continue to use that information to suggest great content.

#Google #Microsoft #Mozilla & #Netflix are just some members of “AllianceForOpenMedia” By @VicenteA_George #Media #Codecs

We live in an age when almost everything is located on Internet and every day more and more of our Media are at some point, unplayable due to some “Format Restriction” of any kind.

Well, soon that’s about to end thanks to the recently announced Alliance for Open Media.

Starting on September 1st Seven of the most greatest Media creator have created this “Justice League” of Formats and Codecs for video and media in general.

“The Open and royalty-free format for next-generation
ultra high definition media”

Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla and Netflix have made partnership into this Open-Source Project to reach to ultimate goal of “develop next-generation media formats, codecs and technologies in the public interest.”

Something that really complicate media consumption in the format of the video we’re trying to see.

For example:

For using MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 formats, a royalty must be paid to MPEG LA.

Mozilla has Daala

Google is has on VP9 and 10

Etc.

That’s why should not come as surprise that this guys wanna save some money and as result we have a more persistent and pleasant usability of video formats.

What they want to do as main task is to create media:

Interoperable and open.

Optimized for the web.

Scalable to any modern device at any bandwidth.

Designed with a low computational footprint and optimized for hardware.

Capable of consistent, highest-quality, real-time video delivery.

Flexible for both commercial and non-commercial content, including user-generated content.

(Something worth the mention is Apple absence in the group, which is easily explainable.

Apple owns QuickTime and they need to pay anyone to implement videos on  iTunes or Apple TV.)

The license name will be Apache 2.0 and will work under the W3C patent rules.
