Version 1 awarded exclusive Global Microsoft Partner of the Year Award for delivery of National Highways app driving safety on England’s roads

IT service provider Version 1 has been awarded a prestigious accolade by Microsoft for its work with the UK’s National Highways to improve safety across the road network across England.

Dublin-founded Version 1 was named the global winner in the Modernising Applications 2023 Microsoft Partner of the Year Awards, beating off stiff competition from an international field.

The Microsoft Partner of the Year Awards recognise Microsoft partners which have developed and delivered outstanding Microsoft-based applications, services, and devices during the past year. Awards were classified in various categories, with those honoured chosen from a set of more than 4,200 submitted nominations across 100 countries worldwide.

Version 1 was recognised for providing outstanding solutions and services in Modernising Applications for its innovative transformation of a critical application for National Highways’ Incident Liaison Officers (NILOs). The NILO team are responsible for coordinating information on major incidents – multi-vehicle collisions, severe weather, and freight spillages – over 4,500 miles of England’s strategic road network and are vital to the 254 billion passenger and freight vehicle miles travelled across England every year.

The solution has meant the NILO team has increased the speed at which major traffic incidents are reported by 150%, incident closure efficiency by 82% and incident creation by 50%. It replaces a legacy system and is a key enabler of National Highways £27.4 billion Digital Roads Strategy aimed at revolutionizing how the strategic road network is designed, built, operated and used.

The app significantly improves user productivity and incident handling through easier, faster logging, reporting, and information sharing. This has facilitated smoother coordination of emergency services, dissemination of media updates for the public, and enhanced incident management and road network operation.

Crucially, for road users, this means a safer, easier journey and improved journey times, bolstering England’s reputation for having the safest roads globally. It also helps National Highways deliver on its commitment to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on its roads by 50% by 2025.

The project was delivered using Version 1’s collection of quick-start delivery accelerators, known as Foundations, which uses prebuilt solutions which incorporate industry best practices and utilise best-of-breed open source and cloud-native technologies. Foundations enables a reduced time to market, reduced delivery risk, increased alignment to standards and improved security.

Tom O’Connor, Chief Executive Officer of Version 1, said: “We are delighted to have been named as the global winner in the Modernising Applications 2023 Microsoft Partner of the Year Award. The award cements our reputation as a trusted partner of choice to major organisations in the transformation of critical digital infrastructure and we are pleased to have been recognised by Microsoft.

“The National Highways project is a great example of the transformational projects that Version 1 can deliver which significantly improves efficiency and efficacy for our clients. We are particularly proud to have helped National Highways to make England’s roads safer and thank them for partnering with us.”

Nicole Dezen, Corporate Vice President of Global Partner Solutions at Microsoft, said: “Congratulations to the winners and finalists of the 2023 Microsoft Partner of the Year Awards! The innovative new solutions and services that positively impact customers and enable digital transformation from this year’s winners demonstrate the best of what’s possible with the Microsoft Cloud.”

Microsoft Partner of the Year Awards are announced annually prior to the company’s global partner conference, Microsoft Inspire, which will take place on July 18-19 this year.

Bolt launches shared electric bike rental in Bray, allowing customers to travel by bike and taxi with the same app for the first time in Ireland

European shared mobility leader Bolt, in partnership with Wicklow County Council, has officially launched its shared electric bike service in Bray today. The occasion was marked by an event at Bray’s Civic Offices attended by Cathaoirleach Cllr. Melanie Corrigan, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council Cllr Aoife Flynn Kennedy, members of Bray Municipal District, and other public representatives.

The bikes can be found at a variety of designated locations throughout the town and rented by the minute. Bolt and Wicklow County Council are confident they will support the transition away from the private car towards a combination of public transport and shared mobility. The service has an affordable €0.18 per minute charge and has been designed to connect to local Dart stations.

The launch coincides with #YourCouncil Day, which is intended to raise awareness of the many services local councils offer across the country. Bolt and Wicklow County Council are hoping the new service fits seamlessly into the local transport offering, and aid the Wicklow County Development Plan 2022-2028 which, amongst other objectives, seeks to facilitate a modal shift to more sustainable transport options.

Bolt offers a range of services on the same app in cities across Europe, but this marks the first time such a ‘multimodal’ service has been available in Ireland, with e-bikes now connecting with Bolt’s existing ride-hailing service in Dublin. This means a wide variety of mobility needs can be met within the Bolt app alone. For example, citizens can ride a bicycle to a public transport hub or destination in Bray at the start of the night, and then get home safely by taxi after public transport services have stopped for the night.

Bolt’s electric bike service will operate 24 hours a day. Amongst several other initiatives to ensure Bolt remains a responsible operator, the company will be employing an in-app cognitive reaction test 11pm-5am 7 days a week. This means prospective riders have to prove they are in a fit state to ride a bicycle through their reaction time. If a customer fails this test, they will be encouraged to take a Bolt taxi or use public transport instead, another benefit of offering multiple transport modes within the same ecosystem.

Bolt is taking multiple efforts to ensure the bicycles seamlessly integrate into the lives of riders and pedestrians alike. The roll-out of the bikes will be gradual, starting with an initial 50, scaling up to 100 pending positive feedback from all corners of the community and high levels of demand.

Bikes will be stationed in designated mandatory parking locations on public realm and private property (as agreed with the landowners). This means riders will be instructed where they have to park their bike through the app and physical signage. Locations are intended to be convenient yet unobtrusive, with examples including Shoreline Leisure Bray, Pettitts-SuperValu on the Southern Cross, Ballymore lands on the Dublin Road and of course at Bray’s Dart station. Operations – including the tidying and maintenance of bikes – will run from a town centre base, and feedback of all kinds can be shared in app or by emailing Ireland@bolt.eu.

Bolt is widely experienced in operating micromobility services. The company is the largest electric scooter provider in Europe with over 260,000 scooters across 25 countries, and already has a highly utilised electric bike service in Sligo, Kilkenny and Wexford. Furthermore, Bolt is in talks with several other councils keen to accelerate their active travel services in line with the National Development Plan and the Climate Action Plan.

For those not yet familiar with bicycles with pedal assisted motors, there is ‘Beginner Mode’. This limits the top speed of the bicycle to 15 km/h. Once ‘Beginner Mode’ is turned off, the bicycles have a maximum speed of 25 km/h.

Bolt Operations Manager for Rentals in Ireland, John Buckley, said: “Bolt has seen rapid traction in e-bike schemes across a range of Irish cities, driven by strategic parking collaborations and affordable pricing. We’re thrilled to launch our electric bike service in Bray, and what great timing. Your Council Day embodies the value councils bring to their local communities – through this great initiative, we’ll be working with the Council to provide people with sustainable transport options so they can make the change where possible.

“It’s also great timing since our recent research revealed that only one-quarter of Irish drivers believe they are likely to give up their car in the next five years*. We’re on a mission to provide and advocate for the alternative, and make cities for people, not cars. Our thanks go to Wicklow County Council for the opportunity.”

The Cathaoirleach of Bray Municipal District, Cllr Melanie Corrigan, said: “I am delighted to launch this e-bike scheme here in Bray on ‘Your Council Day,’ the first of its kind in County Wicklow. It will offer local residents and visitors the opportunity to avail of a sustainable transport option in our town. With the introduction of this e-bike initiative on a pilot basis in Bray, we hope many people will change how they travel by reducing the reliance on private vehicles when travelling short-to-medium distances. Now more than ever, with both the climate and energy crisis, it is vital to provide facilities that allow the public to choose alternative modes of travel. This e-bike sharing scheme allows us to choose to travel in a more sustainable way and enjoy the social, environmental and health benefits of cycling.”

Emer O’Gorman Chief Executive, Wicklow County Council stated: “I welcome this low-carbon, sustainable e-bike scheme which will provide a vital transport option to the community of Bray. The initiative is a significant step forward towards fulfilling yet another commitment under our programme for Climate Action. Bray is an ideal town for this initiative and hopefully it will encourage more people to cycle over short trips and connect with DART and bus services in the town. It has been shown that e-bike users cycle further and more often so the benefit will extend beyond low carbon sustainability and will contribute towards the health and wellbeing of our citizens.”

Lorraine Gallagher, District Manager, Bray Municipal District added: “This is an excellent initiative which will assist in promoting the many benefits of sustainable travel to the people of Bray, and I would like to commend the project team from Bolt and Wicklow County Council for bringing this initiative to fruition and for choosing Bray. I would also like to thank local businesses who have worked with the project team in allowing bike parking bays to be installed on their property. I expect this shared electric bike scheme to be incredibly popular and will provide the enthusiasm for this Council to explore and introduce further sustainable and affordable travel initiatives going forward.”

A Simple Guide to dApp Development

Are you fascinated by the world of decentralized applications (dApps)? Do you want to learn how to create your own dApp and be part of the decentralized revolution? In this article, we will explore the ideal process of creating dApps, from concept to deployment. Whether you’re a developer, entrepreneur, or simply curious about blockchain technology, this guide will provide you with valuable insights and practical tips to get started on your dApp journey.

Before diving into the process of creating dApps, let’s first understand what they are. While the most appropriate source of this information is ideally from reputable dApp development experts, we are going to try and give you the best guidance in this article.

Understanding Decentralized Applications

In very simple terms, a decentralized app, or dApp, is like a digital superhero that doesn’t need an instructor to operate. Imagine a regular app on your phone, but instead of relying on a central authority, a dApp runs on a network of computers called a blockchain. It’s like a team of superheroes working together, each with a copy of the app and a say in how things happen.

This special power brings incredible benefits such as transparency, fairness, and security. Since no single authority has control, no one can manipulate the app’s data or change the rules secretly. It’s all out in the open, just like a transparent glass jar. So, when you use a dApp, you become part of a community of users, collaborating and keeping each other in check, making it a truly democratic and trustworthy platform and experience.

 Key Features of dApps

To benefit from these applications, they need to exhibit several key features that differentiate them from traditional centralized applications. Understanding these features will help you design and develop a successful app. Look into it and see the essential things you need to look out for:

  • Peer-Powered Prowess: Decentralized apps harness the superpower of peer-to-peer networks. Imagine a web without a central point of control checking and directing every action around. Instead, it’s a playground where users interact directly, sharing data and making decisions together. No intermediaries or gatekeepers slowing things down. The best explanation is being in a place where everyone’s invited, and nobody’s left out.
  • Trust, No Tricks: Trust is a precious gem, and decentralized apps keep it safe. In traditional apps, trust is often placed in a single authority, like having a boss pulling the strings of every department. But not with dApps.  These applications are built on the blockchain and distribute trust and authority to change things among many, making it virtually unbreakable. This kind of setup ensures that no one can tamper with data or cheat the system.
  • Transparency like no other: With decentralized apps, transparency takes center stage. It’s like users have the power to peek behind the curtain of an app and see all the workings behind the scenes. That’s what dApps offer—a front-row seat to the action. Since data is stored on a public blockchain, it’s like having a clear glass window into the app’s inner workings. No hidden tricks or secret traps. It’s all out in the open. If you want to feel and be in charge of your application, dApps can offer you that authority.
  • Security: With traditional apps, there’s a risk of a single point of failure—like having a jar with a crack. On the other hand, dApps have a fortress with many layers of defense. Since data is distributed across the network, there are numerous points holding similar or synchronized information at any given time. Even if one point falls, the rest keep the application secure, protecting your information like an invincible shield.

  • Freedom: Decentralized apps give you the freedom to be the boss of your own digital destiny. Instead of relying on big corporations or governments, dApps put the power back in your hands. You’ll be making your own choices without anyone dictating the steps you take. You have control over your data, your transactions, and your digital identity.

Process of Developing a dApp

Ensure to embark on a dApp development journey that blends innovation and business needs. Here is a simple process for building a decentralized application that captivates users and benefits your business:

Step 1: Define Your dApp Vision:

Every successful dApp starts with a clear vision. Take a deep dive into your idea, understanding the problem you’re solving and the value you bring to the table. Explore the market, identify who you’re building the app for, and check out what those started before you are doing. Outline the unique features that set your dApp apart from the rest. This foundational step is like charting a course for your business, ensuring you’re headed in the right direction.

Step 2: Architect the Blueprint:

With your vision in mind, it’s time to architect the blueprint of your dApp. Design the user experience (UX), considering how your target audience will interact with your application. Create wireframes and prototypes, mapping out the user journey and interface. Think of it as drafting the blueprints for a stunning office building, ensuring that each space serves a purpose and contributes to the overall functionality and aesthetics.

Step 3: Choose the Right Blockchain Platform:

Choosing the ideal blockchain platform is vital for the success of your application. Assess the available options based on factors like scalability, community support, development tools, and mostly security. Whether it’s Ethereum, or any other worthy contender, weigh its suitability for your dApp’s specific needs. It’s akin to laying a sturdy foundation for your business, providing stability, growth potential, and the essential infrastructure to build upon.

Smart Contracts and Backend Ecosystem:

Smart contracts serve as the backbone of your dApp’s operations. Utilize programming languages such as Solidity or Vyper to craft resilient and secure smart contracts that define the rules and interactions within your application. You want to create high functionality and reliability, ensuring smooth operations and seamless interactions within your dApp’s ecosystem. Develop the backend infrastructure, setting up the necessary APIs, middleware, and databases to support your dApp’s functionality. This step is akin to constructing the engine room of your business, ensuring smooth operations and efficient data management.

Step 5: Create the Frontend Experience:

The frontend of your dApp is where users engage with your application. Leverage web development technologies like JavaScript and popular frameworks like React or Vue.js to craft an intuitive and visually appealing user interface. Ensure seamless integration with the blockchain, allowing users to interact with smart contracts and access decentralized features. Think of it as designing the face of your business, one that captivates users and provides a seamless experience.

Take Away

Remember, developing a dApp is an iterative process that requires continuous testing, refinement, and adaptation. Embrace feedback from users and engage in thorough quality assurance to iron out any bugs or vulnerabilities. With dedication, business acumen, and a touch of innovation, you’ll be well on your way to creating a remarkable dApp that disrupts the industry and unlocks new possibilities.

Boortmalt introduces new initiative to safeguard Bee Health – BEE SAFE app

Boortmalt, the world’s leading malting company, is announcing the launch of an innovative application that empowers beekeepers and farmers to collaborate in safeguarding the well-being of bees during treatment periods in agricultural fields. This novel solution will help enhance the life cycle of bees by ensuring their safety when farming activities require the use of certain treatments.

The BEE SAFE app allows beekeepers to geolocate their hives, providing real-time data on their precise locations. Through the application, farmers can access this information and inform nearby beekeepers about upcoming treatment periods in their fields. This valuable exchange of information enables beekeepers to take necessary precautions such as temporarily closing their hives, thus safeguarding the well-being of their bees.

Launching the app, Tom Bryan, Boortmalt’s Regional Agronomy Manager UK and Ireland, said: “Bees play a vital role in pollinating crops, contributing to food security, and biodiversity. Recognising the critical importance of protecting bee populations, Boortmalt developed the BEE SAFE app to enable beekeepers and farmers share information. By sharing information and promoting collaboration, we can contribute to the preservation of these vital pollinators and ensure the sustainability of our food systems”.

Louis Bolger, Chairman of the Kildare Bee Keepers Association, welcomed the new app: “Bees are part of the biodiversity on which we all depend for our survival. However, bee populations have been declining globally over recent decades due to several factors including the use of pesticides. I welcome the BEE SAFE app which will make a real difference to the preservation of these vital pollinators. I would like to thank Boortmalt for launching this initiative and call on other agri-bodies to follow Boortmalt’s lead and play their part in protecting all pollinators and their habitats”.

Boortmalt has a strong vision on sustainability and in line with this the group promote the continuous improvement of farming methodologies through local sourcing programs that are environmentally sound and beneficial to local communities.  Boortmalt’s commitment to sustainability and responsible agricultural practices is further exemplified by its efforts to support bee health. By leveraging technology and facilitating collaboration, the company is driving positive change in the agriculture sector and promoting a more bee-friendly environment.

Tile integrates with Life360 as location app announces 64% increase in UK paid membership

Life360, the family locator app and safety membership platform, has today announced a 64% growth in UK premium members over the last year, alongside a range of new features included in its free membership offering, rolling out over the next weeks. This includes further integration with Tile, the leading Bluetooth tracker brand it acquired in 2021.

Used by more than three million people in the UK and 50 million people worldwide, Life360 offers families peace of mind by allowing them to coordinate daily activities in real time, find important items, stay connected with those who matter most, and assist in emergencies.

The Tile integration allows Life360 users’ entire “Circle” of family and friends to see the location of important items within their Life360 map. Life360 members will automatically be able to see Tile and Tile-enabled products’ last reported location, so everyone in their Circle can easily locate shared items or help each other retrieve something that’s been misplaced. Tiles can be attached to everyday essentials like bikes, keys, wallets, bags, and more.

Life 360 existing features include; advanced intelligent location sharing between Circle (group) members through Place Alerts, which send a push notification when members leave or arrive at a designated location; Check-ins, which allow a user to send their location via push notification instantly to every member in their Circle and Family Driving Reports, which allow families to see how (and what) drivers are doing behind the wheel to encourage safe habits and more.

Other new free features unveiled today include:

Free Crash Detection, which notifies Circle members and emergency contacts when Life360 detects they are in a car accident. If help is needed or the member doesn’t respond within a five-minute grace period, all Circle members and emergency contacts are notified via a text message with the user’s exact location. The app notification will also play a unique sound on the phone that will repeat for either 10 minutes or until the notification is acted upon. Of course, no one ever expects to be in a car crash, but the truth is that they happen more often than you might think and the time it takes to get help is critical.

Enhanced SOS, which means that after triggering an SOS Alert, a 10 second countdown will begin, after which Life360 will call and text all Circle members and emergency contacts for the Circle the alert was triggered in. Circle members will also receive a push notification. The phone call and text message will say where the user was when the SOS Alert was triggered. SOS alerts are available to all Life360 users, meaning parents of all ages, including new drivers and university students, can be reassured that if a loved one requires emergency assistance but can’t contact 999 because they are unable to talk on the phone, Life360 can help.

David Rice, Life360’s International GM and CSO, said: “There’s a reason why one in eleven UK families already use Life360. The launch of these new services form part of our vision to expand our offering in the UK and to help better connect and protect the people and things that matter most.

“Members can now expand their Circle to include items using Tile and these services combined feed into our mission to deliver safety options for families and their things. So whether you’re retrieving keys lost down the back of the sofa with Tile, or sending your teen driver immediate help following Life360’s crash detection, the ability to confirm the people and things that matter most are safe and accounted for and takes the stress out of everyday life.”

As a top 25 iOS app in the UK, Life360 will be introducing more additional features to the UK market over the coming months.

How to Choose the Right Mobile Casino App for Your Needs

The rise of mobile technology has transformed the way we gamble, and mobile casino apps have become increasingly popular in Ireland. With so many options available, it can be challenging to choose the right mobile casino app that meets your needs. In this blog post, we’ll explore some factors to consider when choosing a mobile casino app, including the app’s reputation, selection of games, security features, bonuses, and payment options.

Introduction to Mobile Casino Apps

Mobile casino apps are a convenient way to enjoy your favourite casino games from anywhere in Ireland. They provide access to a wide range of games, from slots to table games, with the added benefit of being able to play on-the-go. However, with so many options available, it can be challenging to know where to start when choosing a mobile casino app.

Consider the App’s Reputation

One essential factor to consider when choosing a mobile casino app is the app’s reputation. It’s important to select an app that is licensed by a reputable regulatory authority, such as the UK Gambling Commission or the Malta Gaming Authority. You can also check user reviews to see what others are saying about the app’s performance and reliability.

Look for a Wide Selection of Games

Another crucial factor to consider is the selection of games available on the mobile casino app. The top Irish casinos online reviewed and ranked here, will offer a broad range of games, including classic slots, video slots, table games, and live dealer games. The more extensive the selection of games, the more likely you are to find something that suits your preferences.

Pay Attention to Security Features

Security is paramount when it comes to online gambling, and mobile casino apps are no exception. Look for an app that uses encryption technology to protect your personal and financial information. Additionally, check to see if the app offers two-factor authentication or other security features to prevent unauthorized access to your account.

Consider Bonus Offers and Promotions

Many mobile casino apps offer bonuses and promotions to new and existing players. These can include free spins, deposit match bonuses, and loyalty rewards. When choosing a mobile casino app, be sure to check for any current promotions or bonuses and compare them to other apps to ensure you’re getting the best deal.

Evaluate Payment Options

Finally, it’s important to consider the payment options available on the mobile casino app. Look for an app that offers a variety of payment methods, such as credit and debit cards, e-wallets, and bank transfers. Additionally, check to see if the app offers fast and secure withdrawals to ensure that you can easily access your winnings.

Top Irish Mobile Casino Apps in 2023

As the online gambling industry continues to evolve, new mobile casino apps are constantly emerging. However, some apps stand out from the rest due to their reputation, game selection, security features, bonuses, and payment options. Here are some of the top Irish mobile casino apps in 2023:

Paddy Power Casino: Paddy Power is a well-known name in the Irish gambling industry, and their mobile casino app is a great choice for those looking for a wide selection of games and generous bonuses.

Conclusion

Be sure to take your time, compare different apps, and choose one that offers the best overall experience for your preferences and budget.
