Facebooks failure or is it?

Today we read from the indo a story on cyber bullying, but is it facebooks responsibility ?

Some will say yes, some will say no,some blame the parents, some blame the corporate money making company. So who is at fault?

Facebook can be proactive so can we and so can parents.

Also what is needed is a clear under standing of the meaning of cyber bullies, trolls etc.

Some people dont understand and will write articles on such and its clearly missed the point.Mostly in this case its people who are seeking revenge or just immaturity of the whole concept.Social media environments are a haven for some in a bad way but mostly good for most users.

One thing ive noticed is people seem to to misunderstand what cyber bullying is,people call it been a troll or a pest where constructive criticism if often mixed up with cyber bullying.

Have a read of facebooks failure here and see what you think .

FACEBOOK has ignored a request for a meeting with Irish school principals to discuss the risks associated with the misuse of social networks by young people.

Second-level principals sought discussions with the world’s largest social network in light of growing problems with cyber-bullying.

The National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD) want to discuss specific issues, including what they see as a need for a schools’ “hotline” toFacebook.

The principals’ concerns also include a refusal to, or delay in taking down abusive posts and underage (under-13s) students setting up Facebook accounts. A letter from the principals was sent to Patricia Cartes, Facebook’s public policy manager, and copied to Simon Milner, its director of policy for Ireland and the UK.

Facebook’s reply sets out its approach to safety and cyberbullying, as well as arrangements in place for reporting any concerns. NAPD director Clive Byrne said the letter from Facebook was “generic” and ignored the request for a meeting.

He said this was “disappointing” and “surprising, since NAPD raised a very specific set of issues, and principals have the care of the country’s schoolchildren in their hands”.

Mr Byrne welcomed Facebook’s commitment to what they call a “zero-tolerance approach to bullying” and said that it showed that it took seriously its responsibility to tackle cyber risk.

“But NAPD is concerned that the network is not prepared to deal directly with schools’ requests to take down abusive posts promptly, or to provide dedicated liaison teams for schools and parents,” he said.

Instead, Mr Byrne said Facebook believed it was adequate to involve third-party “partners”, such as the Department of Education and its internet safety site, webwise.ie or hotline.ie, a service for reporting illegal content on the internet, in the reporting exercise.

He said “given the deeply hurtful nature of some online posts, and their sometimes tragic consequences, we believe that Facebook also had a duty to handle calls from schools, users and parents directly using dedicated liaison teams”

Concerns

Mr Byrne said Facebook should be more proactive in raising public awareness of cyberbullying, and advising on safe and responsible internet practice. The Irish Independent asked Facebook if it was willing to meet the principals to discuss their concerns. In an emailed response, it did not address this question.

“Nothing matters more to Facebook than the safety of our users. We’d like all teachers to know what to do about bullying online and we responded in full to this letter, once we received it. We are always open to opportunities to improve understanding, working with partners such as webwise.ie.”

Scam Alert In ireland

If you get a call from this number   005167172092 IGNORE

It is a scam. They claim to be MICROSOFT VIRUS CENTER.

Do not give out personal information

Recent method to prove they are “legitimate” is to tell you a registry
CLSID which happens to be the same on all Windows Computers. Yet it does sound
very official.

The scam works by criminals posing as computer security engineers and calling people at home to tell them they are at risk of a computer security threat. The scammers tell their victims they are providing free security checks and add authenticity by claiming to represent legitimate companies and using telephone directories to refer to their victims by name.

Once they have tricked their victims into believing they have a problem and that the caller can help, the scammers are believed to run through a range of deception techniques designed to steal money.

The following is Microsoft’s advice:

  • Be suspicious of unsolicited calls related to a security problem, even if they claim to represent a respected company.

  • Never provide personal information, such as credit card or bank details, to an unsolicited caller.

  • Do not go to a website, type anything into a computer, install software or follow any other instruction from someone who calls out of the blue.

  • Take the caller’s information down and pass it to the authorities.

  • Use up-to-date versions of Windows and application software.

  • Make sure security updates are installed regularly.

  • Use a strong password and change it regularly.

  • Make sure the firewall is turned on and that antivirus software is installed and up to date.

  • Microsoft Security Essentials is a free antivirus product and is available at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx.

This was going around a while ago and now back in full swing of course the number has been reported and as usual nothing has been done.

Irish rail to launch free wifi on all trains

IRELAND is to become the first country in Europe to have wi-fi on all its trains.

Iarnrod Eireann passengers will enjoy free internet access on rail services by the end of the year. Travellers on inter-city services and commuter routes into Dublin can already surf the web while travelling.

The roll-out is being funded by the National Transport Authority. More than 250 carriages in the fleet are already equipped.

The technology will be installed on DART, the Dublin-Belfastroute and 17 commuter carriages before the end of the year, meaning all services will have wi-fi.

The move is part of government plans to have all public-transport services equipped with internet access by next year.

Some 80 of the Dublin Bus fleet and almost all of the Bus Eireann fleet is already internet-enabled. Plans are in place to provide wi-fi on Luas services in Dublin from 2013.

“One of the great benefits of rail travel is that you can use your t ravelling time productively, for work or leisure,” said a spokeswoman for Iarnrod Eireann.

She added: “Other operators might have their whole fleet of trains that are wi-fi enabled, but no country in Europe would have universal access.

Microsoft launches Windows 8

Microsoft has launched its new Windows 8 operating system and Surface tablet in a bid to revive interest in its flagship product and regain ground lost to Apple and Google in mobile computing.

The launch comes amid a slew of other tablet offerings, with Apple unveiling its iPad Mini with a 7.9in (20cm) screen on Tuesday.

Amazon and Barnes & Noble, makers of the 7in (17.7cm) Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet, are coming out with larger versions next month.

At the same time as launching the new Windows operating system, Microsoft is also introducing its Surface tablet – its first venture into making computer devices.

That goes on sale on Friday, along with computers and other tablets running Windows 8.

One factor that might dampen enthusiasm for the Surface is its price – $599 (£372) with its touch keyboard cover – and its availability for purchase only from a limited number of Microsoft stores and online, said analyst Kirk Adams.

He said consumers may be reluctant to buy the device until they can try it in person.

Meanwhile, most analysts believe companies and governments will hold off on upgrading to Windows 8 for at least another year.

About half of business users still have not upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows XP, which came out in 2001.

XP also marked the last time Microsoft had a huge launch campaign for Windows. Releases of Windows Vista and 7 since then have been more subdued.

In ireland

PC World in Carrickmines, Dublin 18 will be the first retailer to offer Windows 8 to consumers with a special opening at midnight tonight.

Ireland has played a key role in the launching of Windows 8 with many employees being involved in the development and testing of the product.

“Team members in the Sandyford based European Development Centre have been involved in core development, localisation and testing work – ensuring that the product was ready for launch in over 100 different languages.

“In addition, the EMEA Operations Centre is providing the logistics support ensuring its available in 56 different markets from tomorrow while our Sales and Marketing team have been working with partners, the developer community and customers over the past number of months to prepare for the launch of Windows 8 in Ireland,” said Paul Rellis, Managing Director, Microsoft Ireland.

In the US, initial demand appeared solid, but customers were wary.

Early reviews of the Surface tablet were mixed, with praise for its slick hardware, but concerns about battery life and limited software and applications available.

Investors were uncertain about the prospects for success of Windows 8, but many feel a solid launch could help Microsoft’s stock, which has languished between $20 and $30 for much of the last decade.

Four square gets updated.

Foursquare, the social check-in app, has launched an update that sees it offering more for users with recommendations suggesting new places to visit.

Foursquare’s app redesign has been hinted at for a while now, and the latest version focuses more on helping users to find new places, rather than just allowing them to check-in.

Going the way of many social apps these days, Foursquare’s new design also makes it more visual. Photos in the Friends tab are now given more space, and user profiles have a new aesthetic with six tiles for your friends, stats, photos, tips, badges and lists.

Foursquare has done more than just add a few new features to its app; it has rebuilt it and redefined how users will interact with it. No longer just a check-in app, version 5.0 is available now on iOS and Android, with an update for BlackBerry to follow in the coming weeks.

Breitling Launches the B55,its first smartwatch, and it looks good. by @jimboireland #Breitling #SmartWatch

Breitling are renowned for luxury watches and some can be pretty expensive to say the least but in saying that you are getting excellence for your hard earned cash, you can find them in some stores here in Ireland if you fancy splashing out the cash on one of these timepieces. Now they have entered the smartwatch race with its first connected chronograph.

Breitling-B55-connected-watch-and-phone-app

In 2014, Breitling presented Caliber B50, an electronic multifunction chronograph movement with analog and digital displays. This exclusive ‘motor’ served to offer pilots a vast range of innovative functions, along with unprecedented ease of use and read-off. But it was also intended to pave the way for other avant-garde developments – a mission now accomplished with the launch of the B55 Connected, a new-generation connected chronograph.

The B55 Connected boasts a wide range of innovative functions that make it the ultimate pilot’s instrument, including an electronic tachometer, a countdown/countup system enabling a sequence of countdown and “long duration” timing (Mission Elapsed Time) operations, along with an eminently aviation-oriented “chrono flight” device that is useful in recording flight times while memorizing the take-off time, landing time and date. It is equipped with a particularly simple and logical control mode, involving function selection by rotating the crown, and activation/deactivation by means of two pushpieces. The two ultra-legible LCD (liquid crystal display) screens features a high-intensity backlighting system that may be activated merely by pressing the crown – or when the user tilts his wrist at a more than 35° angle, which proves particularly effective when the hand is gripping aircraft controls or a steering wheel.

Thanks to an innovative miniaturized rechargeable battery system, the watch may be recharged via the main grid or a computer USB port. The exclusive newBreitling Caliber B55, a SuperQuartz™ movement ten times more accurate than standard quartz, is chronometer-certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), the highest industry benchmark in terms of reliability and precision based on an international norm.
