Competition Heats up in the South West Tech Hub as it@Cork Leaders Awards Shortlist is Revealed

This week 21 tech-leading organisations in the Cork region received word that they have been selected to go to through to the final stage of the judging process in the celebrated it@Cork Tech Leaders Awards 2019.

Making the announcement Anthony O’Callaghan, Chair of it@Cork, said,

We are delighted with the applications received for the 7 award categories this year, and the calibre of each and every submission brings home what we already know – that our IT sector is brimming with talent, ambition and innovation. Whittling it down to just 3 candidates per category was an unenviable task, which the judging panel spent hours upon hours poring over. Those who have been shortlisted this year were the standout IT leaders in an exceptionally talented pool, and they should be extremely proud of this achievement”.

The awards, which are in their 13th year, shine a light on those people who are leading the charge for the region’s tech community and are paving the way for the continued success of tech in the South West region.

Winners of the 7 categories will be announced at a Gala dinner to take place at the Rochestown Park Hotel on October 18th. The night will also see one person take home the coveted Tech Person of the Year Award, which, in the past, has been won by gamechangers of Ireland’s tech industry, such as Peter Coppinger and Daniel Mackey of Teamwork, and Dan & Linda Kiely of Voxpro.

it@Cork also announced the addition of the new “Trend Micro Excellence in Education Award”.

Mr. O’Callaghan added,

“We have added a hugely positive incentive to the award this year, with the winner receiving a prize to the value of €5,000, which can be used towards purchasing equipment to further their STEM initiatives. We collectively feel that this is a very important give-back initiative, one which the entire it@Cork community feel very strongly about, and we are thankful to the continued support of Trend Micro and in particular William Dalton and Avril Ronan, who jumped at the opportunity to support this initiative.”

Avril Ronan, Global Programme Manager Internet Safety, Trend Micro commented,

“We passionately promote cyber safety education and the positive use of technology in communities around the world. That’s why we seek to award the Excellence in Education award to the school that has not simply demonstrated the use of digital technology in class, but that also actively engages and promotes STEM; incorporating software and hardware development skills into the curriculum, prioritising teacher support and training to advance IT/ICT skills and sharing what they learn with those outside the school walls, right into local community, making a real difference. With open positions in the IT sector in Ireland at an all-time high, these schools are nurturing a sense of creativity and curiosity in their students, and hopefully a desire for a career in technology and so are helping us fill those open positions. This is why we applaud all of the schools who submitted applications for their foresight and leadership.” Shortlisted post-primary schools are Mayfield Community School, Coláiste Éamann Rís and St Brogan’s College.

This year will also see one company win the inaugural it@Cork Skillnet Best Workplace Award, which Mark Jordan (CTO) of Skillnet Ireland described as a “fantastic addition to the already broad accreditation base”,

A work environment can bring out the best or the worst in a team – we know we have the people and the skills in the region, but it’s up to the employers to foster a community of inclusion, personal development, and creativity in their workplace. And we know from working with employers that so many of them are excelling in this regard and are really delivering for their employees. We think their work should be commended and we hope that it may inspire others to follow suit or to learn from their best practices”. Shortlisted companies for this year are McKesson, Poppulo and VMware.

The theme of this year’s Leaders Awards is ‘Towards 2020’, which it@Cork say is a celebration of all the previous winners who have contributed immensely to the tech industry in the region, and a nod to the present and future leaders who will bring the Irish tech industry into the next decade.

An exciting addition to this year’s initiative is the opening of the new it@cork Tech Leaders Hall of Fame, into which all previous winners of the prestigious Tech Leader of the Year award will be inducted.

“We love hearing feedback from customers about how they use Alexa throughout their day—whether that’s listening to music, dropping in on a loved one, trying out a new recipe or playing a game with the family,” said Jorrit Van der Meulen, Vice President, Amazon Devices International. “We hope these new Echo devices will give customers even more ways to access Alexa—whether that’s through the best-sounding Echo yet—Echo Studio, the reimagined Echo and Echo Dot, new designs like Echo Show 8 and Echo Flex, or new experiences for Alexa on-the-go with Echo Buds.”

New Additions to the Echo Family—Even More Ways to Add Alexa to Your Day

All-new Echo—Updated fabric design and even better sound, still only £89.99

The next-generation Echo features an updated fabric design with options suitable for any style—including Twilight Blue, Charcoal, Heather Grey, and Sandstone. Echo has the same audio architecture as Echo Plus, including a 3-inch woofer and increased back volume so that the bass feels stronger, and the mids and highs are clearer.

Echo Flex—A plug-in smart speaker with Alexa for £24.99

Echo Flex is the most affordable way to add Alexa to any space in your home. It plugs directly into a standard electrical outlet, making it perfect for those places in your home where cords can be a hassle like the hallway, garage or utility room. Simply ask Alexa to control compatible smart home devices, make an announcement, or check the score of a favourite sports team. Responses will come through the small speaker on the device that’s been optimised for Alexa’s voice. Echo Flex also has a built-in USB port so you can easily charge your phone or add an optional accessory, like a Smart Night Light or Motion Sensor, all while using only one outlet.

Echo Dot with clock—Now with a simple, bright LED display for £59.99

Echo Dot with clock starts with the best-selling Echo device ever, and adds a simple, bright LED display that makes it the perfect addition to a bedside table or countertop. The LED display automatically adjusts based on the brightness of the room, so you can easily see the time, just ask to see the outdoor temperature, or to set a morning alarm or pasta timer. Plus, you can tap the top of the device to conveniently snooze an alarm.

Echo Show 8—Versatile 8-inch HD display, crisp and powerful audio, and a camera with a built-in cover for £119.99.

Currently we are finalising our Echo show 5 and love it,its the best piece of tech on the market now for the money. See more on that here

With a vivid 8-inch HD display, crisp and powerful audio, and a built-in camera cover, Echo Show 8 is our most versatile smart display yet. Simply ask Alexa to play your favourite episodes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel or Carnival Row on Prime Video. With the Echo Show 8’s integration with BBC Good Food, it’s easier than ever to find and cook along with your favourite meal recipes and, with WikiHow, you can access hundreds of how-to videos by voice—all you have to do is ask to see videos on how to meditate, cut up a mango or open a tight jar.

Echo Studio—Immersive 3D audio, pairs with select Fire TV devices for audio playback, and a smart home hub for only £189.99

With five built-in directional speakers, Echo Studio has been purposefully engineered to create premium sound with space, clarity, and depth. Its 5.25-inch woofer and 330W of peak power produces deep, rich bass by using the bass port at the bottom to maximise airflow and bass output from the woofer. Echo Studio has a 1-inch tweeter and three 2-inch midrange speakers that deliver dynamic midranges and crisp, high frequencies. Plus, it has a 24-bit DAC and a power amplifier with 100 kHz of bandwidth for high-res, lossless music playback, available via Amazon Music HD. Echo Studio also automatically senses the acoustics of your space and fine-tunes audio playback to deliver optimal sound—no matter where you put the device in the room.

Echo Studio is the first smart speaker to deliver an immersive three-dimensional (3D) audio experience using Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio. It brings listeners closer to their favourite artists and songs, allowing them to experience music the way that artists intended it. Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment are bringing a growing library of new music, current hits, and legendary tracks to these immersive formats. Native 3D music is only available on Echo Studio with an optional Amazon Music HD subscription, a new tier of the highest quality streaming audio available.

One or two Echo Studio devices can be paired with select Fire TV devices for audio playback with multi-channel sound and support for Dolby Atmos, Dolby Audio™ 5.1, and stereo audio. Echo Studio also has a built-in Zigbee smart home hub, which can be used to control compatible smart home devices—making it the perfect addition to your family or living room.

Echo Buds—Truly wireless earbuds with Bose Active Noise Reduction technology and hands-free access to Alexa for £119.99

Designed for wherever your day leads you, Echo Buds are an easy way to access Alexa hands-free while on-the-go. Each earbud has two outer microphones and one inner microphone that work together to reduce ambient noise so Alexa can hear you whether you’re walking to work, on your lunch break, or carrying your shopping home on the train. All you have to do is ask to hear your favourite playlist, check your calendar, or order an Uber.

Echo Buds have two premium, balanced armature drivers in each earbud—the driver design is inspired by in-ear monitors used by professional musicians, to deliver crisp, clear vocals and dynamic bass. This design makes Echo Buds perfect for listening to your favourite music, Audible book, podcast, or radio station. Plus, with Bose Active Noise Reduction Technology, you can choose to minimise the noise around you. If you’re in a crowded coffee shop or working in an open office space, double tap either earbud to turn Active Noise Reduction on. When you are walking down a busy street or at the train station—places where you want to hear the world around you— double tap either earbud again to turn Pass-through mode on.

Echo Buds come with three different sized ear tips and wing tips for a secure fit that you can wear throughout your day. Each earbud is sweat resistant and IPX4-rated to withstand splashes or light rain. And with one full charge, Echo Buds have up to five hours of music playback or four hours of call time. The included charging case holds up to three additional charges, which means 15 additional hours of music playback or 12 hours of call time. Echo Buds connect to Alexa through the Alexa app on your mobile device and use your existing device’s data plan to access a range of features such as music, navigation via Google maps, calling, and more. You can also tap and hold your Echo Buds to access your phone’s native voice services—Siri or Google Assistant.

New Alexa Features

Alongside a new lineup of Echo devices, Amazon today announced ways that Alexa is getting smarter, making life more convenient and giving customers even more control over their experience.

Alexa can Recommend Routines

Customers around the world regularly use routines to execute multiple smart home commands with a single utterance, and now Alexa is able to recommend routines that you may want to set up based on your daily habits. For example, if a customer sets their alarm for 6 AM and then immediately ask for the weather every day, Alexa will suggest setting up a routine so that the alarm is always set and the weather plays as soon as it goes off. When Alexa asks if you would like a routine set-up, just say “yes,” and the routine is ready to go.

Alexa can tell you about her responses
Alexa will soon offer two new voice-based features that provide customers with more transparency over the responses they get. If a customer is curious to understand what Alexa heard when you asked her to tell you the news or play a specific song, customers will be able to say, “Alexa, tell me what you heard” and Alexa will read back your most recent voice request. You will also be able to ask, “Alexa, why did you do that?” and Alexa will provide a short explanation about her response to your last voice request. This feature will be rolling out in the coming weeks.

Additional control for customers—Auto-Delete Voice Recordings
Alexa and Echo devices are built with multiple layers of privacy protections. Earlier this year Amazon introduced the ability for customers to say, “Alexa, delete everything I said today,” and “Alexa, delete what I just said” to make it easier for customers to delete their recordings. Today we’re taking it one step further with Auto-delete. Available later this year, customers will be able to choose to have their voice recordings older than three or 18 months automatically deleted on an ongoing basis. This feature will be available in addition to the ability to access and delete utterances individually, or all at once, which customers have today.

Availability

The all-new Amazon Echo, Echo Flex, Echo Dot with clock, Echo Show 8 and Echo Studio are available for pre-order starting today and will start shipping to UK customers later this year. Echo Buds will be available in the UK later this year and customers can sign up at www.amazon.co.uk/echobuds to be notified when they become available.

The new devices announced today join Echo Dot, Echo Plus, Echo Show, Echo Show 5 and Echo companion devices to create the Echo family of devices. Amazon also introduced new Alexa features that will soon roll out to Echo devices. Read more about today’s news at www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonDevices.

New Dell Technologies Research Forecasts Top Ways Emerging Tech Will Transform our Lives by 2030 #Tech #Dell

Dell Technologies today released the Future of Connected Living – new research exploring how emerging technologies will transform how we live by the year 2030. The research, conducted in partnership with  Institute for the Future (IFTF) and Vanson Bourne, surveyed 4600 business leaders across 40+ countries. The findings detail a future brimming with opportunity as advancing technologies hold the potential to drive human progress across the world.

Mark Hopkins, General Manager, Dell Technologies Ireland said: “The Future of Connecting Living report we are launching today outlines concrete examples of the immense changes that will take place over the next decade. Everything around us will become more intelligent and human-machine partnerships will drive higher productivity and greater work-life balance.

“At Dell Technologies, we are committed to working with our customers across the island of Ireland to ensure that they are prepared for our world of 2030 and are well-placed to benefit from emerging technologies to drive future business growth.”

 Emerging technology driving major shifts

IFTF and forum of global experts forecast that technologies such as edge computing, 5G, AI, Extended Reality (XR) and IoT will combine to create five major “shifts” in the coming decade. These shifts will have the power to change lives across the globe.

IFTF forecasts the following shifts between now and 2030:

  1. Networked Reality: Over the next decade cyberspace will become an overlay on top of our existing reality as our digital environment extends beyond televisions, smartphones and other displays.

  1. Connected Mobility and Networked Matter: The vehicles of tomorrow will essentially be mobile computers. We will trust them to take us where we need to go in the physical world as we interact in the virtual spaces available to us wherever we are.

  1. From Digital Cities to Sentient Cities: Cities will quite literally come to life through their own networked infrastructure of smart objects, self-reporting systems and AI-powered analytics.

  1. Agents and Algorithms: We will each be supported by a highly personalized “operating system for living” that is able to anticipate our needs and proactively support our day-to-day activities to free up time.

  1. Robot with Social Lives: Robots will become our partners in life – enhancing our skills and extending our abilities. Robots will share newfound knowledge to their social robot network to crowdsource innovations and accelerate progress, in real time.

Anticipating Change

Many businesses are already preparing for these shifts. For example, the survey of 4600 businesses found that:

  • 76% expect they will restructure the way they spend their time by automating more tasks.
  • More than half of businesses surveyed indicated that they anticipate Networked Reality to becoming commonplace
  • 56% say they would welcome day-to-day immersion in virtual and augmented realities
  • 56% say they would welcome people being fitted with technology that controls computers with their mind (brain computer interfaces)

Navigating Challenges

These major technology-led shifts may challenge people and organizations that are grappling with change, according to the research. Organizations that wish to harness the power of the new emerging technologies will need to take steps to effectively collect, process and deploy data to keep pace with rate of rapid innovation.

Additionally, concerns around the fairness of algorithms that do everything from decide how companies hire to who is eligible for loans must be addressed, as will growing concerns from the public about data privacy. Governments will need to learn how to work together to share and deploy their data if cities are to go from digital to sentient.

Business leaders are already anticipating some of these challenges:

  • 74% of surveyed businesses leaders say they consider data privacy to be a top societal-scale challenge that must be solved
  • 44% call for AI regulation and clarity on how it’s used

To execute the research, IFTF relied on its decades-long study on the future of work and technology, the latest Dell Technologies research, and experts from across the globe. The Future of Connected Living is the third and final part in a three-part research series that includes The Future of the Economy and The Future of Work, both of which were released earlier in 2019.

GECAS & UL launch new Women in Aviation Scholarship. #WomenInAviation #GECAS #UL #Aviation

GECAS, the leading aircraft lessor based in Shannon, and the University of Limerick School of Engineering, are pleased to announce Ireland’s first ever Women in Aviation Scholarship to help drive increased engagement by female students in Aeronautical Engineering.

Beginning this year, GECAS will provide a Scholarship each year to one qualifying first-year female student of the UL Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering course. The successful student will be awarded a €5,000 bursary for each year of their studies, meaning a total of €20,000 will have been granted by the time of their graduation.

Through this initiative, GECAS is leading the Irish aviation leasing sector in helping drive female engagement of Irish aeronautical engineers, starting from the ground-up. As a major employer in the region, GECAS is keen to spearhead this initiative with the University of Limerick.

Niamh O’Dwyer, a 4th year aeronautical engineer from Clonmel, Emma Tobin, a 5th year aeronautical engineering student from, Duncannon, Wexford, Hannah Begley a 4th year aeronautical engineering student from Curragh, Kildare and Maram Youssef, a 4th year aeronautical engineer from Clonmel.

Speaking at the launch, David Campbell, Head of Technical, GECAS said, “It is estimated that only around 10% of Aeronautical Engineering students in Ireland are female. We want to change that metric. The goal of this scholarship is to encourage, and more importantly, support the development of the next generation of women in aviation, particularly in the engineering space. GECAS understands very well that diverse teams offer great advantages to organisations, so it is vital that we play our part to ensure a strong pipeline of female talent into our industry.”

Sarah Hartnett, Director of Development, University of Limerick Foundation said, “We are delighted to strengthen our relationship with GECAS. The under-representation of women pursuing careers in the Aeronautical Engineering space is a concern. However, through the support of organisations such as GECAS, we can work towards encouraging young women into fields that they might not initially consider and highlight to them the fantastic career avenues that exist.”

Ronan O’Higgins, Course Director of the Aeronautical Engineering Programme, University of Limerick Foundation said, GECAS has always been a strong supporter of the Aeronautical Engineering Programme at UL. In fact Guinness Peat Aviation (GPA), the forerunner of GECAS, was directly involved with the establishment the programme in 1991While female participation is traditionally low, our female graduates will tell you of the fantastic opportunities that they have experienced in their careers in aviation. The GECAS Women in Aviation Scholarship will help to increase awareness of this exciting career to future female aeronautical engineers.”

The program is open to female students of the University of Limerick’s Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering and begins with first year students. Each year, one new first year student will be awarded the scholarship, with the bursary continuing for each year of the course. The scholarship will be awarded based on academic achievement and passion for aviation.

The deadline for submission of this year’s applications is October 11th, 2019.

SportsMobile is a new Irish mobile case provider covering sports fans and more. #Sports #StartUp #SportsMobile #IrishBiz

When it comes to cases and we have reviewed hundreds here it can be a bit of a pain at times finding the right one furthermore getting a case can be difficult depending on brand and then again availability especially with new releases. Muller Hickey has set up a new website getting cases for the sports fan, again another area forgotten, there is sites out there that offer case customising but they are cheap prints and the logo or whatever might be printed will wear away after some usage and turn yellow a typical sign of a cheap case especially if its transparent others just fade away becoming transparent.

Instagram phish poses as copyright infringement warning, Tips to stay safe. #Instagram #Phishing #Sophos

Not a day goes buy when we see one scam or phishing attempt and this one is no different and is something to watch out for just in case as these things tend to get nascent quickly and for those who use Instagram daily which many of us do you need to take note. This time, the crooks are tapping into a concern that many of us have – falling foul of copyright law.

Sophos has provided some useful information on the latest warning which is copyright infringement and it just not true..

As in the previous case of Instagram phishing, the crooks are using a free .CF domain name, “left stuffed” with subdomain text that disguises its bogus origins.

Remember that once you have the right to use a domain such as example.com, you also acquire the right to create subdomains such as www.example.comanytext.youlike.example.com, or even (as in this case) instagram.copyrightinfringementappeal.example.com.

If there isn’t room in your browser’s address bar for the full domain name – and on a mobile device, there almost certainly won’t be – then the browser will show you the believable left-hand end of the domain and hide the important part at the right-hand end.

Here are five more tips for staying out of trouble:

  • Look out for obvious errors. In this attack, the crooks were careless with the email they sent. It contains numerous grammatical and typographic errors, which are a big giveaway. Closer inspection would reveal that the email came from a Turkish hosting company, and that the clickable button in the email itself leads to a bogus .CF domain, not where you might expect in the case of an Instagram page.
  • Check your address bar. If a web address is too long to fit cleanly into the address bar of your browser, take the trouble to scroll rightwards in the address text to find the right-hand end. Closer inspection would quickly reveal the bogus domain name here.
  • Consider using a password manager. Good password managers associate usernames and passwords with already-known login pages, so your password manager wouldn’t offer to fill in an unexpected password field on an unknown web domain – it simply wouldn’t know what account to use.
  • Never login via email links. If you need to login to a site such as Instagram for some official purpose, find your own way there, for example via a bookmark you created earlier, or by using the official mobile app. That way, you’ll avoid putting your real password into the wrong site.
  • Learn how your online services really handle disputes or security issues. Don’t get taken in by warnings you receive by email. Find your own way to the real site and use the service’s own help pages to find out how things really work. That way, you’ll be much harder to con.

And a bonus sixth tip if you’re looking after other users…

  • Make sure your users are clued up. Phishing emails like the one shown here are easy to fall for because of their elegant simplicity – by copying distinctive pages from well-known brands, the crooks keep your suspicions low. Sophos Phish Threat lets you train and test your users using realistic but safe phishing simulations.
