Hundreds attend London event aimed at enticing tech talent to Ireland. #tech #404London

Hundreds attended an event in London this weekend, aimed at enticing skilled tech workers to Ireland.

404 London saw leading tech employers showcasing the career opportunities they have on offer in their Irish sites.  Participating companies included Cartrawler, HubSpot, Indeed Prime, Workday and Zendesk.

In addition to showcasing career opportunities, the event featured panel discussions, tech installations and talks by industry leaders.  John Romero, creator of the popular Doom computer game, was a star attraction, remaining unbeaten in a ‘Doom Deathmatch’ at the event, for which he played Doom against 20 fans.

Pictured at the event in Shoreditch, London, was Jackie Slattery, co-founder of 404, challenging John Romero of Romero Games at ‘Doom’, the legendary computer game he created. Photo: Doruk Yemenici.

404 London was run in partnership with Tech/Life Ireland, a joint initiative of Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland and the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation.

Commenting from the event, Jackie Slattery, co-founder of 404, said:

“We’ve had hundreds of skilled tech professionals in attendance at 404 London.  These are people interested in moving to Ireland because they know the best tech companies in the world are located there.  They’re also attracted by the work/life balance, well-established tech community and the scope for career progression.  The feedback from participating companies has been fantastic – they were all hugely impressed with attendees’ experience and skills levels.

“There’s a well-documented shortage of skilled tech professionals in Ireland, so we’re delighted there was such a strong turnout.  This is the first Irish tech recruitment event of its kind – directly connecting Ireland’s tech employers with the large pool of talent available in the UK.”

Mobile subscriber penetration in Mali is forecast to reach 138% in 2022, says @globaldataplc

A large land-locked country in West Africa, Mali’s population of 17 million has seen a strong growth in mobile uptake over the years, due to a lack of fixed connectivity services. Alpha Telecom’s long-awaited launch as the third mobile operator in Mali, under the brand Telecel, means that mobile subscriber penetration in Mali is expected to reach 138% in 2022, up from 127% in 2017, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Previously there have been two mobile operators in Mali: Orange Mali, part of the French Orange Group, and Malitel, part-owned by Marco Telecom and Malian government. At the end of December 2017, Alpha Telecom finally launched Telecel. Despite receiving a mobile license as far back as February 2013, Telecel had not managed to launch services until now. Over the years, it faced financing, infrastructure, and legal delays.

With network equipment built by Huawei, Telecel plans to offer 3G services, first in Bamako, then gradually rolling out across Mali. Telecel will be inserting fresh competition into the current duopoly between Orange Mali and Malitel.

June Sun, Technology Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “A new mobile operator entering a market can potentially lower the prices for consumers, as the new operator competes for subscribers with the incumbents. However, Telecel will have to compete with established products in the market, such as Malitel’s and Orange Mali’s popular mobile money services.”

Review – The woojer strap. A subwoofer for your body. #BornToFeel #tech #woojerstrap

This is a strap to be short but its got something quite different and offers something new via haptic feedback via two boxes if you will placed on the strap which can be worn in several ways so it’s not a mandatory fixture or set up just like a VR headset for example which this works quite good with too if you are into that thing, If you like music, gaming and VR you need to try it more so to get what this feeling is like, It’s new its different, its good.. But perhaps niche…..For now..

UNBOXING WOOJER STRAP

Set Up is simple and there is an app you should download both on Android and iOS so before going any further get the apps as these control feedback and the app is pretty clean and neat with a simple to use UI which also allows you to share your status via social media if you wish to do so.

The app also allows you to control the music just like a typical music player on a mobile phone and it’s another option other than the controls on the unit itself which are simple and easy to use and also easy to navigate blindly once you get set up and use to using it. The app will give you the choice of ear pods, On-Ear and In -Ears to pick from on the top and you can look through your music library to from the top right, The hamburger menu gives you some other options.

Once you are all set up and what you want to set up be it gaming,VR music or video you are then good to go and feel what happens next, this is not for everyone to be honest and I was a bit optimistic about it when I first seen it and what it can actually do and to be fair it makes things better than the bog standard norm and brings life to whatever it is you might be doing.

This is effectively is like a subwoofer for your body which you can control the intensity so each person might be different on what they can take and limited for VR use but they have a vest which looks really neat and its something more down my street for a complete set up and more immersive experience in VR. Having tried this in several positions its hard to say which is best but what is important is that it brings something totally new here and with their future products coming to market they will change the bog standard experience  an I would like to see this working on AR too rather than VR.

It is however a tad bulky but especially when wearing both headphones and a VR unit but its not that heavy and you could say it feels like a backpack strap on you for a bit and the adjustable straps can be moved to suit your preference depending which way you wear it ,You will know its there it does not wear off easily and that does not really matter because of what it does, As it’s a first gen product things can only get better and these are the guys to bring something new for everyone and not just folks into music but the gaming and VR world too and its good to see.. I like the idea and the their products and look forward to what is coming from them in the future to give me something more than I and we have been use to for a long time, this opens doors and they have the products the change the boring norm for its intended market.

Review – The BT8500 Advanced Call Blocker twin set #BT #Phones #Tech #Home

Traditional digital cordless phones have come along way from their introduction while often lag Smartphones in technology. The BT8500 Advanced Call Blocker has one feature that surpasses the smartphone straight from the box.  The TrueCall call blocking technology allows blocking of nuisance calls with one button.

The unit looks modern with a glossy black design which is comfortable to hold. The buttons are large and easily viewed or pressed. The handset sits snuggly into the base set or can stand upright on the table.

Note: The unit comes with a BT Telephone cord, but an Ireland adapter or cord are easily purchased inexpensively.

Main Features:

  • Block up to 100% of Nuisance Calls
  • Block up to 1000 numbers or block calls by type

1 / 6

Setup / Warranty / Support:

The BT 8500 hardware setup is uncomplicated; plug in the base, switch on the handset for the first time, then a series of on-screen prompts guide you through the setup process. There was the option to skip some steps and return later. The BT quick start guide gave clear concise instructions on the use of this product.  The unit comes with a one-year warranty (which is disappointing for a quality product) with UK support via freephone number 0800 145 6789, there is also email support.

Call blocker:

The BT8500 Advanced Call Blocker used TrueCall, if the contact numbers are not stored in the phonebook it will ask the caller to leave a message with their details saying who they are. The phone alerts you to the caller and their message (the caller is put on hold). The call can be accepted with the option to store as a confirmed friendly number, thus ringing as normal in the future.  This feature can confuse friends and family initially, I would recommend storing as many contact numbers in your phone initially to prevent friends and family having to state their name on the phone. Alternatively, you can request the caller’s details blocked permanently or the option to advise the caller you are not available. Unsolicited caller numbers can easily be blocked with over 1000 numbers.

You have the option to:

  • Block by Number
  • Block by call type, for example, mobile, international, withheld, unavailable or

payphone numbers can all be blocked.

  • Do Not Disturb

A nice feature in the phone is, when a call starts ringing, you can block it straight away by pressing Block on the screen. That number will then be added to your blocked list. These features can be switched on / off as required.

Note: Caller ID is required to use the call blocker option.

BASE

Text messaging:

Text messaging must be a feature available on your phone to send and receive text messages, text messages are not available in Ireland.

If choosing an option, the twin set is ideal leaving one handset in the kitchen and one in the bedroom, allowing the freedom to take calls from either or use as an intercom.  This model can be got as a single, twin, trio or quad packs should you need additional handsets for other rooms. There is no additional wiring required for the additional handsets and you can save up to 200 contacts which can be auto transferred to the other handsets.

The phone menu structure is straightforward, accessing the menu allows features to be turned off or on as required. The phone has all the features you would expect and more. A list of who’s called (up to 50 incoming and 30 outgoing calls), answer machine, option to hear who’s calling you before you answer, choose how many rings you want before the machine picks up, hands-free speaker and speed dial.

The phone has excellent call quality, a 1.8 inch full-graphic seven-line easy-to-read colour screen with a backlit keypad to see the keys at any time of day. If you’re plagued with countless of cold calls, then this phone is certainly a phone to be considered. Once you become familiar with the call blocking options, it’s hard to go back to a traditional phone.

Setup, Support, & warranty,

The Setup is straightforward with minimal technology knowledge required. Download the app or click on the QR code to download the app. The initial setup on the smartphone and web took less than 10 minutes.  The physically camera setup and networking takes minutes, but the positioning of the cameras required a higher skill knowledge. If the physical camera setup is done improperly, then there is a deterioration in battery life, quality, and motion detection can become a problem. There is an excellent Arlo Community support search option of  FAQ which allowed questions asked, via the community of customers and experts. https://community.netgear.com/t5/Arlo-Smart-Home-Security/ct-p/Arlo

This Netgear Arlo Pro is backed by a Netgear limited 1-year hardware warranty. 24/7 basic technical support provided for 90 days from purchase date, when purchased from a Netgear authorised reseller. The 1-year warranty is a disappointment for the Netgear product.

Requirements: Note there is an internet requirement of a minimum 1Mbps upstream recommended and an available port on the router.

The App: The Arlo app has downloads of approx. 1 million with a rating of 4.1 out of 5. The app gives clear instructions for the unit’s setup. The app allows viewing on the cameras live or during motion detect.

Video Storage: The Netgear Arlo Pro comes with a free storage option which allowed storage for 1 week for motion detect. This can be upgraded at a cost to other storage options increasing time limits or space available.  There is an option to use an external USB drive max of 2TB connected directly to the base station. This has the advantage of dual storage, in case the camera system was stolen data is stored on the cloud, In the event of an external internet issues, local storage would be good.  As a guideline using the best quality video settings, one hour of recordings is approximately 180 MB. Files

Video footage Library  on cloud storage:

Battery:

The 2440mAh rechargeable batteries are supplied fully charged which is great to get up and running quickly.  Over 1 week with motion used only, the battery dropped from 100% to 90% indication a great battery life. There is an option for solar power charging. The video quality effects the battery life, setting the unit to best video quality reduces the battery life, whereas setting it to best battery life may reduce video quality.  Battery life varies based on settings, usage, & temperature. Plugging in the camera via a USB lead recharges the battery, and allows you more features, including activity zones, video analytics, continuous video recording (CVR) plan, and the look back feature.

Wall mounts: The magnetic ball mount supplied was the best I have seen, no more struggling to fit a bracket on the wall then tighten the screws to ensure accurately focussing on the required area. The Netgear Arlo Pro camera snaps onto the magnetic ball mount which in turn is screwed to a wall. The camera can be adjusted easily to any angle via the magnet. There is also the option of Table and Ceiling Mount.

Modes: There are customised options available via the web site and phone app. The motion detect default is setup for push notifications to your smartphone, sending email alerts. This worked great, but I had to disable this feature due to motion alerts during the night causing the smartphone alerts. There are options to schedule the alerts during the week with options for each day / night.  Turning off the alerts  / push notification took minutes to find out how to via the support section.

Overview: The unit required little technical knowledge, (no internal networking, port- forwarding, App configuration) can be used indoor or outdoor ,Weather-resistant IP65 rating. There is no wiring required as wireless, the option to view on line via a laptop or smartphone. The app is a great app with no major bugs observed, (a slight lag in actual motion to video footage). There is the option to use the free service or upgrade to the paid subscriptions, or external storage up to 2TB. The battery option allowed great flexibility in choice of fitting location. The Video resolution was great, configurable up to 1280 x 720, with night vision similar due to 850 nm LEDs: illuminates up to 25 feet.

The wire-free options allow flexibility in use if used on a Farm calving camera, Monitor vehicle outside your property, ability to fit a camera without the need for wires, option to move the camera around as required.

Overall this unit was a pleasant surprise, the footage quality was excellent both day and night. Slightly let down with only a 1 year’s warranty.  The wireless and battery option having to run no wires was a great bonus allowing the unit to be moved as required. This unit will not fulfil all user requirements due idiosyncrasies and limitations in term of features but this unit without a doubt will fulfil most requirement for most people without the need for highly expertise knowledge. This is an impressive practical CCTV system.

Super PopcornFX Tools – Five Essential Particle Builders for iClone

To make professional VFX generation easy to master without coding, Reallusion has made a special investment to design five exclusive Emitter Tools. Each of the 5 Super Tools are dedicated to one specific emitter type with all the crucial attributes, blend modes, and abilities to replace a custom mesh along with sound or sprite resources in order generate unique visual effects. These tools are integrated with iClone physics, global illumination and self-cast shadows, as well as textures, sprites, and mesh import for maximum flexibility.

Texture Tool

The classic Texture Tool emits image billboards, which can either be selected from a sprite sheet or from a single image. It is frequently used to create effects like fog, rain, smoke, bubbles, fire and explosions

Text Tool

The Text Tools are designed for creating text animations like: Titling, Teleprompting, and Scrolling Descriptions, or to work as Text Labeling in any 3D stage. Users can sequentially display multiple lines of text for TV subtitle effects.

Ribbon Tool

This Ribbon Emitter connects particles or sprites into a seamless stripe to create swirling, twirling or trailing animations in 3D space. It is widely used for casting magic spells, simulating a swimming school of fish, wiggling snakes or hovering insects.

Distortion Tool

This Distortion Emitter generates transparent particles to simulate water, heat or ripples. The visual illusion is caused by the refraction of normal images. Realistic visual effects can be achieved by using animated image sprites, or transforming them during their lifetime.

PopcornFX Learning Samples 50

  • Self-learning resources to quickly demystify VFX production

This Learning Sample Library includes more than 50 application samples, functional projects, and quick video tutorials which are designed to demonstrate how to utilize the PopcornFX Super Tools for real-life applications.
