Microsoft Announces details of new AI Dream Space TV Series: brAIn_waves

Today Microsoft announced details of a newly produced Microsoft Dream Space TV series: brAIn_waves. The series, which is freely available online from today via rte.ie/learn, is designed to develop both AI (Artificial Intelligence) literacy and the skills required for the era of AI in young people.

Microsoft Dream Space TV is an innovative initiative that combines the expertise of the Microsoft education team with RTÉ’s commitment to engage young people in the world of technology and, in this case, AI.

This latest series of Microsoft Dream Space TV is the fifth to be produced in collaboration with RTÉ Learn, with previous episodes focusing on developing digital skills through themes of inclusivity, sustainability, and health and wellbeing.

brAIn_waves

brAIn_waves is comprised of six episodes, two of which have been designed for upper primary school students and four for post primary students. For upper primary school students, the two-part series explores computational thinking, algorithms, data, and how AI works at a basic level. For post-primary students, the four-part series explores the fundamentals of AI and its impact on our everyday lives with specific lesson areas including algorithms, data, machine learning, and ethics.

Post-primary students will have the added opportunity of participating in the Microsoft Dream Space and RTÉ Learn brAIn_waves series competition and will be in with a chance of winning incredible team prizes and competing for the All-Ireland title. The competition element simply focuses on putting the learnings from each episode into practice. Students will be encouraged to work in teams and develop their own AI for Good solutions, which they can then enter into the national brAIn_waves competition. Entries will be evaluated on innovation, data collection, machine learning, impact, creativity, and ethics. 20 teams will win a prize for their school and one overall winner will take home the grand prize and brAIn_waves All-Ireland Title.

Microsoft’s Commitment to Skill Up Ireland
This new online series builds on Microsoft’s recent commitment to help ‘Skill Up Ireland’ for an AI future by way of its national AI skilling programme. The programme is comprised of three initiatives targeted at providing access to industry recognised certificates for adult learners, including in Generative AI, and Microsoft Dream Space AI certificates for student learners.

Commenting on today’s announcement, James O’Connor, Microsoft Ireland Site Leader and Vice-President Microsoft Global Operations Service Centre: “We’re delighted to join the team at RTÉ Learn to announce the fifth series from Microsoft Dream Space TV – brAIn_waves. The series’ focus on AI is particularly important given the technology itself is central to many discussions across business, our education sector, and wider society. Through our STEM education experience, Microsoft Dream Space, we are helping the next generation to develop the skills that are required to succeed in our digital society and economy. AI is no longer a future technology, it is rapidly becoming accessible to all, and therefore it’s really important that we seek to immerse students in all things AI, helping to develop their understanding of and skills in this technology“Our commitment at Microsoft to empower people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences to gain the skills that are required to participate in our AI-enabled economy is the driving force behind our national AI skilling programme, which we launched late last year. As part of this commitment, we are providing every student across the island of Ireland – almost 1 million in total – with the opportunity to engage in Dream Space, our STEM-based learning experience.

“Our aspiration is that teachers and students leverage this free learning resource to bring AI to life in classrooms around the country. Critically though, I hope at the end of the series that the students are inspired to learn more about AI and cultivate their skills in this area. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this series a reality.”

Speaking about the initiative Suzanne Kelly, Group Head of Children’s & Young People’s Content at RTÉ said: “RTÉ are excited to once again team up with Microsoft Dream Space, this time to explore the latest frontier in technology – AI.  AI technology touches almost every aspect of our lives and is continually evolving at breakneck speed, this incredibly timely series showcases how best to harness and understand where AI is going next.

“The Dream Space team have created informative, thought provoking, free learning materials to be used in classrooms across Primary and Post Primary schools and RTÉ Learn are delighted to work with Dream Space to deliver these resources.”

Microsoft Dream Space TV series: brAIn_waves is available from today via rte.ie/learn. A support guide for educators is being made available to support the delivery of the episodes to students and young people in classroom settings.

Tech Review – Wanbo-X2 Max projector

I have several projectors at home and love them all and are one of my favourite pieces of tech to review and enjoy watching my content on. Wanbo have sent us their latest on offer which is the Wanbo-X2 Max projector packed with features, the spec sheet looks good but it is all down to how it comes across for your viewing that counts and we will be taking a close look at this model, one of several the company has on offer at affordable prices.

With this projector you can do many things with and feel more immersed with the bigger picture so to speak and not only that you get big sound which is great, some projectors dish out poor sound but not this one it is loud and punchy with some nice bass in there no distortion or lag latency either noted during testing.

The picture though is what people like to know about these projectors and the picture is good on this no matter what you may use it for, it can be used for gaming watching movies and much more and you can of course cast from your device and hook up your laptop and consoles to see things in all their glory.

The quality is decent even on a darker wall I tried out and came out good overall we have native 1080p present and 450 ANSI which gives a brighter video to watch unlike 720p would in a projector. Some say you would need over 1000 lumens or ANSI to get a better picture which is a fair comment it all depends on how good you want the quality to be but as you will see in the video review below 450 is plenty for simple home use.

This projector has an AI image engine and auto focus and 4 points keystone correction again often left out from previous ones I have review at this price and it works well here and perfect if you have no idea spot to place or mount the projector you can still get the picture square on a wall even if not place directly in front of it.

How big you want the picture also depends on you and the closer the better quality which is obvious but there is three noted focal lengths or screen sizes from 50 120 inches which is ideal and of course you need to try out the 120 inch, if you have a white background of projector screen you will get better results too but this can be projected onto blinds or a darker wall and the picture comes through and not seeing pixels from the desired distance.

Wanbo-X2 specs

The UI is simple to use and navigate and there is tonnes of preloaded apps there is some restrictions as always with projectors but you can get around these easily enough with the know how or just ask someone who does. The noise is also not too loud as some can be from projectors and is tolerable when in use and if you turn your volume up like you should there will be no fan noise to worry about. To top it off you can also use this as a general music player/speaker by simply connecting your device and it has decently loud 2X5W speakers and finally Dual Band 6 Wi-Fi as mentioned above so no lag latency seen during my use so far.

One small gripe for me is the power cable is a bit on the short side.

How Are TV Ads Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Personalization

Advertising methods have adapted to changing market trends and technology over the years. Today’s consumers are well-informed, making generic ads less effective. Traditional TV and digital media ads are now exploring new ways to target users using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for personalization. In this article, we will look at how TV Ads leverage AI for personalization and effective targeting.

Programmatic Advertising: An Overview

Programmatic advertising is a cutting-edge solution to contemporary advertising challenges. This method is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide due to its cost-effectiveness and favorable outcomes. For example, if you’ve come across online gambling adverts on Australian television, it may well have been part of a programmatic targeting strategy. This innovative form of tailored advertising centers on delivering personalized ads across various media platforms. Through this approach, businesses can automate ad placements based on individual preferences, optimal time slots, and real-time bidding. Instead of creating predefined consumer segments for ad targeting, programmatic advertising relies on AI and ML algorithms to make placement decisions. Companies can harness user data to optimize future ad campaigns for enhanced results. Typically, advertising approaches require companies to strategize and input details into ad management platforms to run campaigns. With AI assuming control of advertisements, brands can relinquish the strategic aspects and let automation govern data-driven advertising.

Benefits of Programmatic Advertising

Programmatic advertising is a cost-efficient approach to reaching potential customers. Below, we outline the key advantages to provide you with insight.

Budget Optimization

The most significant benefit of programmatic advertising lies in budget optimization. Brands allocate substantial funds to achieve specific sales targets through ad campaigns. By employing programmatic ads, they can reduce ad spending on users less likely to convert. AI automation leverages real-time data to deliver ads to relevant audiences, increasing the likelihood of action post-viewing.

Reduced Effort

Automation simplifies the process of configuring target sets within ad campaigns. It relies on data-driven insights to make prompt decisions, eliminating potential delays. When campaigns are managed by humans, tasks such as setting up ad sets, creating content, and allocating budgets can be time-consuming. Programmatic ads remove such obstacles, streamlining the advertising process.

Precise Targeting

Brands often turn to market analysts and consumer insight teams to determine suitable target audiences for paid campaigns. These teams gather research and sales data about clients within a competitive industry to discern their purchasing behavior. While this approach can be effective, it does not guarantee conversions. Programmatic advertising employs AI and ML to identify potential buyers in a market and displays ads to specific targets, maximizing conversion opportunities.

Accurate Campaign Evaluation

When brands run paid advertisements, they assess the outcomes of each campaign once results are gathered. Analyzing campaign effectiveness enables them to identify issues within each campaign, which proves invaluable when designing future campaigns for similar consumer markets. With programmatic advertising, brands can conduct more precise evaluations of campaign efficiency, scrutinizing multiple variables influencing ad success during specific periods.

Risks and Challenges of Programmatic Advertising

While programmatic advertising offers numerous benefits, it also presents risks and challenges. As AI and ML algorithms rely on user data for potential targeting, privacy concerns may arise among consumers. Not all customers appreciate having their online data collected without consent.

In the past, Meta encountered such issues related to the personal data collection of Irish users without asking users for consent. Furthermore, ethical considerations pose a hurdle to fully endorsing programmatic advertising strategies. Algorithmic bias is a significant concern that can lead to various problems in the future. Modern society is staunchly opposed to discrimination, gender bias, and racism in any buying or selling channel.

Programmatic ads may target specific communities differently based on their previous purchasing experiences. Advertisers must address the ethical aspects of programmatic ads to ensure their sustainability. In 2019, Facebook faced legal proceedings for permitting advertisers to target consumers based on race, religion, and gender. Subsequent investigations revealed that Facebook’s algorithmic bias led to differentiated targeting based on specific demographics and gender-related roles. The information provided sheds light on the evolving landscape of TV and digital advertising.

Conclusion

Advertising has evolved significantly to meet the changing demands of informed and discerning consumers. Both traditional TV and digital media ads now leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve personalization and targeting precision. Programmatic advertising, with its cost-effectiveness and proven efficacy, is at the forefront of this transformation. By automating ad placements based on individual preferences, real-time data, and AI algorithms, businesses can optimize ad campaigns. While programmatic advertising offers numerous benefits, it also raises privacy and ethical concerns, particularly regarding algorithmic bias.
