Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a distant concept—it’s here, reshaping Ireland’s business landscape at an unprecedented pace.

According to the Dell Technologies Generative AI Pulse Survey, 76% of IT leaders believe that GenAI will have a significant, if not transformative, impact on their organisations.

GenAI has emerged as a double-edged sword in the cybersecurity landscape. It holds immense promise as a powerful tool to enhance data protection and threat detection, yet it also opens new avenues for cybercriminals.

Evolving cyber threats 

Over recent months, we have seen several high-profile cyber incidents both here in Ireland and globally that reinforce the need for organisations in both the public and private sectors to enhance their cyber resilience in our AI era.

SMEs are particularly vulnerable to attack. According to the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau, the number of ransomware attacks targeted at SMEs continued to grow last year.

Infected emails and email links, fraudulent websites, and fake invoice payment requests from suppliers are some of the ways in which SMEs are being targeted. With the growing volume of data which need to be kept secured, many SMEs feel overwhelmed.

The Cyber Security Review Grant unveiled by Enterprise Ireland and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) last month is a positive first step in enhancing the cyber resilience of the Irish business community.

AI strengthening cyber resilience

The Dell Technologies Forum took place today at the Convention Centre Dublin with Rhasidat Adeleke, Irish Olympian and national sprinting record holder, and Bruce Daisley, former Head of Twitter EMEA, author and culture coach headlining the event which showcased how the power of AI can be unlocked to drive innovation, productivity and business growth.

    • Enhance customer care and improve network maintenance with the Amdocs amAIz platform.

Lero researchers explore research opportunities with Qualcomm to develop AI technologies for enhanced efficiency

Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software, today announced a research initiative with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. This initiative aims to explore ideas relative to both the University of Limerick and Qualcomm Technologies, focusing on enhancing performance by using highly advanced technology for artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative, led by Lero researcher Professor Patrick Denny of the University of Limerick (UL), leverages technology from Qualcomm Technologies with the aim of improving the decision-making capabilities of AI in various applications.

Professor Denny, who holds 151 patents, said, “Through this work with Qualcomm Technologies, we aim to explore (or study) the ability of AI to interpret complex data more effectively, to improve operations across multiple environments and potentially increase efficiency. “We want to better understand how vision systems can be combined with AI, particularly in challenging visual conditions.”

“The results of this research can support the development of more reliable vision systems for a range of applications, such as potential automotive, drone, and robotic technologies,” said Prof. Denny, who lectures in the Dept. of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) at UL.

Dell Technologies releases insights from Innovation Catalysts study for World Environment Day

New research unveiled by Dell Technologies to mark World Environment Day has revealed that 77% of businesses in Ireland now have a clear sustainability roadmap with defined goals to reduce their carbon footprint.

Based on responses from 100 IT and business decision markers, the innovation catalysts study suggests while there is a high level of understanding of the environmental standards as set out in law, there is, many businesses are concerned about their ability to meet those standards.

68% of respondents say they understand all the environmental regulations their organisation needs to comply with. However, 50% report that they struggle to keep pace with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards and initiatives.

Sustainability Priorities & Role of Technology

When asked how they are prioritising sustainability across their organisations, 61% said they are prioritising improving their energy efficiency, while 41% are investing in the right skills and talent to meet their sustainability targets. Additionally, 40% have already initiated recycling programs, with a further 39% committed to minimising waste production.

The survey also points towards the growing role played by technology in advancing sustainability. 70% are experimenting with as-a-Service solutions to manage their IT environment more efficiently to reduce energy costs and carbon footprint. 56% of IT decision-makers in Ireland reported using alternative cooling solutions such as air cooling and liquid cooling to save energy in their data centres. Companies are also moving AI inferencing to the Edge to become more energy efficient. This includes accelerating the move to smart buildings.

Close to one in three (30%) believe there’s an untapped potential for organisations to harness AI for driving sustainable innovation, with 28% already leveraging data analytics to optimise and deepen their understanding of environmental impacts and to inform their sustainable innovation strategies.

Embracing the Circular Economy

The commitment to sustainability extends beyond operational efficiency, as evidenced in the study, 75% of the respondents cited plans to responsibly retire or recycle end-of-life IT equipment, with 80% already investing in equipment with extended lifecycles and are easy to repair and upgrade, aligning with principles of circular economy.

The study also emphasises that Irish businesses see transparency and accountability as a non-negotiable in vendor relationships, with 74% of respondents demanding clear sustainability goals and emissions accountability from their suppliers across the value chain and 67% acknowledging the value of collaborating with third-party companies to advance sustainability initiatives.

Furthermore, the latest F710 node builds upon the capacity and density of previous generations, accommodating up to ten drives in a compact 1U configuration. This represents a 25% increase in node density compared to its predecessor, the F600.
