Nokia launches industrial 5G devices to keep workers safe and connected in industrial environments

Nokia today launched an array of industrial 5G devices to keep enterprise teams and public safety workers safe, connected and informed over private wireless networks in hazardous and industrial environments such as ports, mines, chemical plants and offshore oil platforms. The company is introducing new ruggedized 5G handhelds, a new industrial device consumption model, and enhancements to worker and device related applications.

By adding these new assets to Nokia’s end-to-end platform for industrial digitalization, along with its private wireless and edge applications, the company reinforces its industry leadership with a market leading portfolio and strengthens its commitment to help industrial enterprises navigate their digital transformation journeys, ensuring their operations are more safe, productive and efficient.

The new Nokia Industrial devices are suitable for all types of enterprises and include a ruggedized handheld supporting public safety teams communicating over Band 68. The US-manufactured handheld device has a long lifecycle and is IP 68-rated for operation in remote or harsh environments. Dual-SIM, including flexibility adding eSIM, ensures the most reliable connectivity and simplified management, while an exchangeable battery allows shift workers to share devices in the field. Teams can customize keys to define a dedicated push-to-talk button, while other large buttons and optional accessories, including remote speaker microphones and earpieces enabling push-to-talk, allow workers to communicate clearly and safely without removing safety equipment like helmets and gloves.

Nokia is also expanding the portfolio of ruggedized 5G handhelds with EX-rated phones – all with the same technical platform. The company has partnered with i.safe MOBILE GmbH, world market leader for explosion-proof mobile devices and solutions. Two i.safe MOBILE 5G handhelds are now part of the Nokia end-to-end solution for private wireless infrastructures. They have been rigorously tested and certified* to meet the connectivity demands of sectors such as oil and gas, mining and chemical manufacturers. They can be safely used in hazardous areas (ATEX Zone 1) or further away (ATEX Zone 2) where flammable atmosphere is not likely but could occur for a short time. These handhelds offered by Nokia, support all necessary radio frequency bands, have all required certifications, and can thus be used by companies worldwide.*

Nokia will also offer its managed ruggedized 5G industrial devices deployed over Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) in a subscription-based ‘as-a-Service’ (aaS) model. Application bundles include Nokia Industrial device management, which allows administrators to apply group policies and scale management to their entire device fleet, Nokia Team Comms and Nokia Network Digital Twin. This model allows enterprises to move asset costs from capital to operating expenses and more easily connect workers and manage the fleet of industrial devices in their plants. Moving forward, Nokia will continue to add more types of devices to the managed aaS model.

The updated Nokia Team Comms (NTC) 23 application running on Nokia Mission Critical Industrial Edge (MXIE) now aligns to the 3GPP defined MCS (Mission Critical Services) standard. NTC will address the needs of mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT), providing communication capabilities usually only available in more complex and expensive solutions for workers in harsh environments. NTC allows users to stream video or establish voice calls with a group of users or a single user to gain the greatest context about any situation. The new version will allow administrators to configure changes to their device fleet via a newly built web portal. Deployed on MXIE residing on-premises, Nokia Team Comms ensures data remains within the teams that use it. It works without internet connectivity and scales from small number of users to large groups.

Nokia is also extending the capabilities of Nokia Network Digital Twin (NDT) to all Android devices, allowing coverage and performance data for Wi-Fi, private and public cellular networks to be automatically collected in real time and processed on Nokia MXIE. Enterprises in dynamic environments, such as ports, factories or mines, can see how changes in their operations impact network performance and use this insight to inform future network planning and use case decisions.

Martin Haaf, CEO of i.safe MOBILE comments: “Through this partnership, we are pleased to support Nokia with our decades of expertise in explosion-proof mobile devices with our latest 5G developments. The combination of our devices with Nokia’s solutions offers companies a great added value on their digitalization journey.”

Martin Beltrop, Head of Industrial Devices, Enterprise Campus Edge Solutions, said: “At Nokia we are committed to helping enterprises reliably connect workers in the most intuitive ways to keep them safe and productive. By extending our portfolio with the new 5G handheld devices and making Nokia Team Comms 3GPP-aligned, we can serve the growing needs of enterprise workers in industrial and hazardous environments as well as public safety teams. And, by leveraging the new capabilities of Nokia Network Digital Twin, teams will have more information than ever before allowing them to make instant informed decisions to maintain efficiency and network reliability in their dynamically changing environments.”

Nokia 4.9G/LTE and 5G ruggedized user equipment and integrated applications allow enterprises to connect their workers and industrial machines over private wireless networks and benefit from the greatest performance and lowest latency.

* *Devices have received the following certifications: ATEX (Europe), NEC500 (US), IECEx (global), UKEX (UK) and JNIOSH (Japan)

Nokia introduces Beacon 10, its first Wi-Fi 6E gateway for a multi-gigabit world #MWC23

Nokia has today launched the Beacon 10, its first gateway supporting Wi-Fi 6E to provide seamless, high-capacity mesh networking. The Beacon 10 is a true tri-band device which can provide Wi-Fi throughput of 10Gbps. It includes a 10G WAN interface to pair with 10 Gb/second fiber modems for multi-gigabit services to the home. The new gateway is shown for the first time at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona.

Widespread roll-out of 10G fiber powered by XGS-PON requires upgrades to home and business Wi-Fi to deliver super high speeds to enabled devices. The ‘E’ in Wi-Fi 6E means faster speeds and lower latencies, ideal for the latest office applications, home entertainment and home working experiences.

Additionally announced at the show, Nokia has upgraded its Nokia WiFi Cloud Controller to act as a User Services Platform (USP) controller. USP is the industry standard protocol (also known as TR-369) to manage services and configurations in network devices (either remotely by a cloud application or locally by a mobile app). Nokia’s USP agent in the Beacon 10 is based on the open-source OB-USPA so it can be managed by any USP controller, including the Nokia WiFi Cloud Controller.

Nokia’s presentation at MWC also highlights its newly developed, all-in-one console for Wi-Fi management and optimization. The console will be available to customer care operators, network administrators, onsite technicians and level 3 support staff to provide advanced WiFi optimization, troubleshooting and management.

Nokia has established a complete eco-system of app developers to ensure CSPs can offer the value-add services they need to their customers on their Wi-Fi units. The Beacon 10 supports the latest, fully integrated cybersecurity application from F-Secure which is delivered as a containerized application.

Dirk Verhaegen, VP Broadband Devices, Nokia, said: “We are proud to introduce Nokia’s first Wi-Fi 6E product for premium, high-performance Wi-Fi in the home and office. Not only does it offer faster speeds, but it also supports 3rd party applications and a USP agent to be fully compatible with multiple controllers, making it much easier for operators to manage. Third party apps and USP are both of strategic interest to Nokia and we will include them in all new broadband devices we introduce, as well as retro-fitting to select existing equipment”

Michael Philpott, Research Director, Digital Consumer Services at Omdia, said: “Vendors like Nokia are paving the path for the next generation of in-home broadband devices with a container application framework that separates the application from the operating system. F-Secure is the first partner to fully leverage Nokia’s application ecosystem to bring its cybersecurity solution to Nokia broadband devices using this innovative and open environment.”

Valentine’s Day research from Nokia Phones finds that tech items are in the top two things that people are willing to share with their partner

In time for this Valentine’s Day, HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, shares new research[1] revealing that food and tech are the items we are most willing to share with a romantic partner, with food topping the list at 58% (Joey Tribbiani should take notes) followed by a phone charger at 48%.

It comes as no surprise that the majority of people (65%) are more likely to share essential and everyday items with loved ones due to the cost-of-living crisis. This rises to 74% for millennials who are the most likely to share overall and drops to 45% for baby boomers who are the least likely to share. Even 9% of millennials would share their toothbrush. Baby boomers would also sooner share with their family, with 60% saying so.

It looks like hogging the covers is a bigger bugbear between couples than taking a charger, as people are more willing to share a phone charger than their duvet, at 48% and 35% respectively. Interestingly, tablets enter the top three items people are most willing to share with their children (26%), before sharing a tablet with family (25%) and a romantic partner (22%).

Adam Ferguson, Head of Product Marketing at HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, said: It’s unsurprising that tech such as phones chargers are commonly shared items given their everyday use. Tablets in particular are made with shareability in mind, just like the Nokia T21, ideal for the whole family – whether it’s for work, learning or play, it’s made to adapt. Multiple years of software upgrades on smart devices also means that they can be shared for longer or passed down when you are looking to upgrade.”

Items most willing to share[2]:
  1. Food 58%
  1. Phone charger 41%
  1. Duvet 35%
  1. Water bottle 32%
  1. Mobile phone 26%

Tech Review – Nokia G60 5G

Ok so Nokia is back i town with some new phones and one message they are sending out is sustainability and the environment and I go to see this first hand at their launch event in Dublin recently and go to see their new range of devices and also the new packaging which all sends a clear message, the phones do feel different in the hand but this does not deflect from the product and from using the Nokia G60 the last few weeks it has served me well it must be said for the money this comes in at and that is also from a power users perspective who threw everything at the phone i would usually do on a daily basis. Well one slight annoyance was I had no case on the phone which bugs me but I went ahead anyway and it did a great job. You can see the first look and walkthrough of the device here where I go over the UI and more on the device.

I have been saying some time now there is no need to spend over 300 euro on a phone anymore and if you are just a general user for emails social media and photos this easily does the task and not only that it has a huge screen to consume media on too which for me is a vital part of a smartphone. not only that decent battery life too which again is for most people and this one has something for everyone including a decent shooter.

If you are looking for a new mobile phone, Latest Deals is the place to go. Their website publishes daily new deals from the most important retailers in the UK and the world. You will be able to find quality products at a discounted price. Save money and take home a bargain!

The G60 could be seen as a mid ranger device which is a sweet spot for many depending on what needs they have, in the looks department from the rear it does look more expensive than it is and given it is made with recycled material you will get that cheapish feel from it at first but it is robust and has not yet got a mark on it from using with no case and this is a good thing from my point of view on how I use my phones. This also does not collect fingerprints. When it comes to the 5G aspect which this phone is for the network I am on I do not get real 5G speeds and changing it has been deplorable on any phone I use but this G60 is thinking ahead here and when it does get better I hope to see an improvement and cant give an honest answer on the 5G aspect but it does work fantastically under normal 4G conditions.

Nokia G60 5G is built to last longer, using 60% recycled plastic. It gets 3 years of warranty,³ OS upgrades and monthly security updates,¹ so you can rest assured your Nokia G60 5G remains cutting-edge. It delivers on premium performance, our latest AI camera experience, and our signature durability too. Plus, the 6.58” FHD+ 120 Hz display gives you a super-smooth everyday smartphone experience, all at an easy-to-hold size.

The screen again is another great feature on this phone it is big crisp and bright with minimal bezels apart from the bigger chin and for most will be fine, yes there is a teardrop front facing camera which many loath but really it does not get in the way and going forward Nokia do need to ditch it.

The camera and audio was decent too and with OZO audio built in you can tell the difference you can be the judge of the image and photo gallery below with both day and night video and image samples to pick from.

The battery life is quite good, now unless like me who is a power user I used for two weeks as a main device and a week as my secondary device which would fall into the hands of a simple daily driver for most people and there is a notable difference to be had here and of course expected. You will easily get more than a day on one charge however for me less than a full day didn’t cut it and to be fair it is like that with any daily driver I use full time however good overall for the average user. There is no wireless charging present here but again the jury is still out on that as a necessity. The phone has 20W charging and does not come with a charger as expected as we all have plenty of them knocking around the house.

For me as someone who user high end phones most of the time I could easily use this to do what I do on a daily basis with the bigger screen which I like most but not the best under extreme sunlight but in Ireland the chances of that ruining your day is slim there is a good speaker on the phone it is light and has all you need and again you are keeping the environment in mind too so overall for the price you get a decent phone. I have also done some video reviews of late with this device, can you pick them out? The audio is a tip…

Nokia launches app marketplace for broadband network automation

Nokia has today announced the launch of a marketplace for broadband network automation applications. Seven apps are available at launch, organized under the categories of Network Support, Network Insights and Network Automation. New apps and marketplace features will follow in 2023.

The ‘Altiplano Application Marketplace’ is named after Nokia’s pioneering broadband network controller suite and will include Nokia and third party apps. Alongside the marketplace launch, Nokia is making available an ‘Altiplano Developer Portal’ which provides a software development kit (SDK) and virtual lab environment for developers to build and test apps.

Operators can self-develop and organize their own applications within the marketplace. They can also use the developer portal to customize their network operations tools, personalizing the user interface, customizing APIs, adding service profiles, and building their own network policies and automation workflows.

Geert Heyninck, Nokia’s VP Broadband Networks, said: “No two networks, and likewise no two automation solutions are alike. By opening up the Altiplano platform for developers, partners and customers to create and add applications, we’re pleased to offer exactly the flexibility they need.”

The marketplace will enable users to choose the automation tools from a digital storefront with ready-made applications. Apps will be curated by Nokia under three pillars. Network Support apps will be used by operators to maintain, troubleshoot and protect fixed networks through proactive monitoring, performance analysis and incident management. Network Insights apps will improve quality and service assurance with actionable insights that help operators to better optimize, plan and prevent. Network Automation apps will help automate and optimize the network, provide service and subscriber operations to increase operational efficiency and improve customer experience. All apps currently launched are from Nokia; third party apps will be added in 2023.

Fatima AlDagharDirector Fixed Access Planningdusaid: “We’re committing heavily in SDN to enhance performance, get insights, and improve services. All managed under a single platform in a multi-vendor environment. Nokia’s open App marketplace – the first of its kind – delivers sophisticated apps that address the requirements of marketing, planning, operations, and assures customer satisfaction.”

Alberto PatronCEO of Condor Technologies, Argentinasaid: “Nokia has a strong reputation in SDN. We welcome this new, open marketplace which gives us an important platform to get our apps in front of global operators.”
