Google finds that only 20% of Irish SMEs are aware of the necessary cyber security measures to protect their data and digital assets

Research conducted by iReach Insights on behalf of Google has found that the majority of SMEs (77%) agree that having a secure online presence is a priority for their business, with 42% strongly agreeing that it is a priority. However, only 20% are very aware of the specific measures or tools required to protect their data/ digital assets while 64% know a little but not much.

When it comes to protecting their website and digital assets, the research shows that just over a half of SMEs regularly back-up data (54%), ensure software is updated (53%), and use two step authentication for accessing common owned devices (53%).

Despite the fact that a strong majority of Irish SMEs readily recognise the benefits of having a secure online presence, less than half of SMEs require employees to periodically change passwords (44%) or take regular or annual security awareness training (38%). Even less (28%) have an incident response plan in case of a cyberattack.

When it comes to how cyber security is managed,  38% of SMEs have their cybersecurity managed in-house, 25% have it outsourced, while 37% have a mix of both. Interestingly, the 38% of SMEs that have their cybersecurity managed in-house express the highest levels of satisfaction at 70%. The 37% of SMEs that have a mix of both In-House and Outsourcing, show the lowest satisfaction levels at 53%.

The findings were published as Google added a new module, ‘Improve your online business security’, to the You’re the Business initiative, a digital training scheme to help upskill Irish SMEs. Launched in July 2022 by Google, Enterprise Ireland and the Local Enterprise Offices, You’re the Business aims to accelerate Irish SME growth through digitalisation in the form of tailored, free of charge online training as well as an SME reward programme.

Marie Davis, Head of SME Retail, UK and Ireland, Google said: “Google is very proud of the You’re the Business initiative and how it has helped Irish businesses initiate, grow, and expand their digital capabilities over the last twelve months. We are introducing a new cyber security module as our research informs us that while Irish SMEs understand the importance of cyber security, they are not always aware of the measures required to protect their data and digital assets. Designed by Google experts, this online training program will better protect SMEs from the growing threat of cyberattack”.

John Magee, Chair of the network of Local Enterprise Offices, said; “Cybersecurity has been identified as a key area of both threat and growth in the coming years. It is vital that small businesses understand that, particularly those that have a significant online presence. As sustainability has become a pillar for many small businesses, so should cybersecurity and it is fantastic that we can now offer that expertise to every small business across the country through our partnership with Google and the You’re the Business initiative. This is another area where we are expanding our approach to ensure small businesses are getting the support they need from their Local Enterprise Office.

Carol Gibbons, Head of Regions and Local Enterprise, Enterprise Ireland, said; “The You’re the Business Campaign in partnership with Google and the Local Enterprise Offices has helped us to significantly increase our offerings to small business in the areas of digitization.  In recent years trading online has become crucial for many businesses and it has also opened doors to new markets internationally.  This brings opportunity but also significant exposure for businesses to threats such as cyber-crime. This new element of the initiative is the perfect first step for businesses to enhance their cybersecurity protocols.”

With the addition of the ‘Improve your online business security’ module today, SMEs can now access [ four modules that can help SME decision makers understand and grow their digital capabilities. All training is accessed through the You’re The Business website.

All training modules including the cyber training are available on-demand online. For further information please visit: g.co/yourethebusiness

Salesforce and Google Cloud Announce Expanded Strategic Partnership to Unlock the Power of AI, Data and CRM

Salesforce and Google Cloud today announced an expanded strategic partnership to help businesses utilize data and AI to deliver more personalised customer experiences, better understand customer behaviour, and run more effective campaigns at a lower cost across marketing, sales, service, and commerce.

Two new data and AI innovations will bring real-time data sharing with enhanced predictive and generative AI capabilities, so businesses can use their data and their custom AI models to better predict customer needs and reduce the cost, risk, and complexity of synchronising data across platforms.

Why this matters: While 80% of business leaders say data is critical in decision-making at their organisation, 41% find their data too complex and inaccessible to be useful. These new integrations will help solve the problem of accessing and understanding data and allow companies to use their data to power AI insights across their business that drive better customer experiences.

Go Deeper: Turning business data into actionable insights and personalised experiences

Salesforce Data Cloud + Google BigQuery

The new integration between Salesforce Data Cloud and BigQuery will enable companies to more easily create unified profiles of their customers to provide new, highly personalised experiences.

Salesforce and Google Cloud will provide customers with seamless data access across platforms and across clouds, akin to having their data housed in a single location — with zero-copy or zero-ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) that can reduce the cost and complexity of moving or copying it while maintaining governance and trust.

Salesforce Data Cloud + Google Vertex AI

New integrations between Salesforce Data Cloud and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI will enable customers to bring their own models from Vertex and use them across the Salesforce Platform, addressing the specific needs of their businesses – such as predicting buying behaviour or churn likelihood – across their Salesforce Customer 360 data. Zero-copy data access for AI model training can maximize a company’s AI investment by providing immediate access to unified customer data, thereby streamlining the model development process and enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of AI predictions and insights.

How industries will use Salesforce’s Data Cloud and Google’s BigQuery and Vertex AI to improve the customer experience and personalize interactions

A fashion retailer can connect CRM data, like customer purchase history and service interactions, with non-CRM data like real-time online activity or social media sentiment. They can then deploy custom AI models that predict customers’ likelihood to buy certain types of clothing based on that data, and deliver hyper-personalized recommendations to customers via the most appropriate channel, including email, a mobile app, or social media.

A healthcare organization can connect CRM data, like appointment history and patient feedback, with non-CRM data like patient demographics and medical history data. They can then deploy custom AI models that predict which patients are at risk of readmission, which informs personalized care plans for those high-risk patients to improve medical outcomes through proactive medical care.

A financial institution can connect CRM data, like a customer’s transaction history, credit score, and financial goals, with non-CRM data like market analysis or economic trends. They can then deploy custom AI models that predict a customers’ spending habits, investment preferences, and financial goals to inform personalized banking services and offers.

Quotes:

“AI and data are revolutionizing the way businesses operate and innovate, and together Salesforce and Google are empowering organizations to unlock the full potential of their trusted data, put AI insights into action, and personalize customer experiences like never before. This partnership paves the way for unprecedented innovation and business value for our customers.” –David Schmaier, Chief Product Officer, Salesforce

“Google Cloud and Salesforce share a commitment to helping businesses accelerate their data-driven transformations. This new partnership brings together one of the world’s largest data clouds from Salesforce with analytics and AI capabilities from Google Cloud, and represents a significant leap forward in businesses’ ability to generate more value and insights from their customer data.” – Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud

Salesforce and Google Partnership Momentum

In 2017, Salesforce and Google launched a strategic technology partnership, bringing together two of the world’s most innovative companies to help customers turn marketing, sales, service, and commerce data into actionable insights and better business outcomes. Since then, companies of all sizes and across all industries have been leveraging Google and Salesforce together to enhance marketing, provide AI-powered customer experiences, and increase productivity.

Availability:

The Data Cloud and Google Vertex AI integration will be in pilot mid-2023, and generally available late-2023.

The Data Cloud and BigQuery integration will be in pilot late-2023, and generally available early 2024.

The Marketing Cloud and Google Analytics integration will be available later this year and compatible with GA4.

Tech Review – Otterbox Commuter case for the Google Pixel 7a

Otterbox is a well known case brand who has protected devices for many years and we of course tried and tested many which have been popular here and on our YouTube channel. So we went and bought our own commuter case for the Google Pixel 7a and check it out.

The case itself is of course robust and has a dual layer and all corners are protected on the device itself, the edges offers a nice grip whilst the back of the case is up for discussion being mostly slippy with two rubberised parts either side which is also grippy, the keys are slightly raised and work well and the front of the device has a decent lip tapering off either end to protect the screen face down. The case does allow wireless charging which is great and works fine. The camera lens is certainly well protected here and the device can be placed down on its rear of face without worrying about the screen or camera lens being marked.  All ports are accessible and the charging port has a protective flap to ensure no dirt or dust gets in, check the video below for a close up look what you get for your money and stay tuned for more case reviews for the Google Pixel 7a

Tech Review – Google Pixel 7a Official Case

New Pixel means new case and yes more to come but today we have the Original Pixel case for the new 7a and it is a nice one and will be welcomed by users of the new phone and we have tried it out and we like it alot..

It is a case and after all so it will be a short review and you can see more in the hands on video below and what to expect when you pick your up from the store in which there is several colours to pick from matching your device which is nice. This case will offer protection for your device all round and has a nice lip around the front too making it blend in the the front of the screen and also gives you additional grip which again is welcome, all ports are accessible and you can still use wireless charging with the case on. The keys are excellent too and have good travel and makes using the keys better in my opinion.

Your charging cables should be fine and the speaker ports are also clear so you have no interruption of functionality here at all. The only one downside I can see is perhaps the same as last year is dust building up at the end of the camera bar if kept in pockets and so on but no huge deal it can be cleaned off with a cloth.

Materials
Case made with over 35% recycled plastics based on product weight
The external portion of the case’s power and volume buttons is made of 100% recycled aluminium
Case has a polycarbonate shell made with 75% recycled plastics
Extra protection, edge to edge.
Featuring durable, stain-resistant silicone material and raised edges, the case helps to protect your phone in all those ‘oops’ moments.
Thoughtfully made. A smooth feel.
It’s made with over 35% recycled plastics, and the soft silicone puts premium comfort in the palm of your hand.

Tech Review – Google Pixel 7a

The Pixel 7a has been launched and we have been testing it the last week or two and of course we steered clear of the leaks and of course we remain leak free on our site and take word from the horses mouth as they say and that is how it always has been here and will remain that way and we leave others who cant help themselves for clicks to do that. We have had the phone for almost 2 weeks so you could say this is an early review and we will look at it again in a few months time.

So yes as mentioned we have been testing the device in our hands and right now I can tell you this device is going to fly off the shelves with the price it comes in at and even some pixel 7 owners might feel a bit peeved even going by what is being said on social media when it comes to the specs on this phone, I am a Pixel 7 owner and it has been my daily driver since launch and it still working a treat and the Pixel devices are known for getting better over time and that much is true but the 7a is going to be a phone to watch and it is now my daily driver but in a smaller package how does it fair out against its predecessors.

In the unboxing and walk through below we go through the device in better detail but out of the box the build quality is excellent and on par with the Pixel 7 which I still also use on a daily basis and it is just a smaller footprint in size overall yet built to last and better than I had expected being the a series. Some small differences overall but nothing out of kilter when you place both devices side by side as you will see in the video below.

Size matters for some and the Pixel 7a hits the sweet spot for me I am not a huge fan of big devices like I once was and since I started using this it hits the spot for me, given you have less screen estate it is not important and for me and how I use my phone on the go and when at home I can use a bigger device for media consumption as during the day it is business and I like to have a phone in my pocket that is not to intrusive or weighty.

The Pixel 7a is the same productivity tool and comes packed again with the same tools on board and is great for multitasking and for those like me who use their device for multiple tasks during the day not including social media and emails etc it flies along as before with no signs of being sluggish and for me worked a treat just as my Pixel 7 still does today and for those who need a device that is capable and offers such tools as the Pixel 7 does the 7a will be a worthy investment.

The Pixel 7a comes with a decent screen with a 90hz refresh rate again a thing that people nitpick at and the 120hz refresh rate that should be a standard which is an argument for another day as most people cant tell the difference. We also get  a 6.1-inch (155 mm) 20:9 aspect ratio FHD+ (1080×2400) OLED at 429 PPI  and Smooth Display (up to 90Hz)

Pixel 7a camera samples front and rear day and night

The camera, again a powerhouse and I have had some time to test this out this time around before my review and again it is simply excellent and for a point and shoot you cant beat it.  You can decide from the image gallery below with day and night images videos and more. The front facing camera offers 13 MP, 1.12 μm pixel width , ƒ/2.2 aperture, Fixed focus  95° ultrawide field of view photo unblur, magic eraser, night sight, face unblur, real tone, top shot and much more. The video is again great offering 4K video recording at 30/60 FPS and 1080p video recording at 30/60 FPS, The front camera offers 4K video recording at 30 FPS 1080p video recording at 30 FPS.

Thunderstorm taken on the Pixel7a compared to same storm taken with the Pixel 7

Other features include – Cinematic Pan, Slo-mo video support up to 240 FPS , 4K time lapse with stabilisation Astrophotography time lapse , Optical image stabilisation, Fused video stabilisation, 4K Cinematic Pan video stabilisation

4K locked video stabilisation, 1080p active video stabilisation, Digital zoom up to 5x14 , Video formats: HEVC (H.265) and AVC (H.264).

Security wise we have got the usual with face unlock and this works really well as does the fingerprint scanner which has been a bit troublesome over the years but seems fine now and the same for my Pixel 7 you also can avail of the old fashioned patter, pin or password but most today prefer the bio-metric approach..  Lastly we have a 4300 mAh and for me lasts almost a day given I am a power user it will get most through the day this time round though we have wireless charging which has been a bugbear of previous a series devices but now finally solved.

Google open applications for 2023 scholarship to support women in Computer Science Education

Google has now opened applications for the 2023 Generation Google Scholarship for women in computer science in Ireland which will see each successful applicant being awarded €5,000 annually, for the duration of their undergraduate studies.

Launched in 2020, this is the fourth year of the scholarshipIn that time, 40 recipients have been awarded scholarships with two 2022 Generation Google scholars now interning at Google’s Dublin campus. The aim of the programme is to further gender equality in the field of computer science in Ireland, by encouraging women to excel in computing and technology, and become active leaders and role models in the industry.

Ruth Bergin, a recipient of the scholarship last year said: “The Generation Google scholarship has boosted my career immensely. I received mentoring from an Engineering Director at Google, who offered me excellent career advice and helped me improve my technical interview skills. I completed an internship at Google Zurich, during which I even got the chance to visit the US on a business trip! I’ve presented to a Google Vice-President, to Senior Directors, and to Directors. Beyond all of that, I’ve met so many female role models in the tech space – from my intern host to the scholarship programme team. When I applied, I didn’t realise just how many experiences and opportunities would open up to me – or that I’d even be chosen at all! I’d urge any student pursuing a tech career to apply.

Welcoming the 2023 programme, Jessica McCarthy, Director of Engineering at Google Ireland, said: “Since 2020, Google has helped inspire a new generation of women to begin careers in computer science. In that time, our Generation Google Scholarship programme has encouraged women to study in the computer science & engineering fields, offered support and mentorship to women and helped foster a positive view of the working experience for women in tech. We are pleased to announce applications are now open for 2023. We look forward to welcoming a new intake to join the already 40 scholarship recipients of this dedicated programme.
