Google ‘Year in Search’ results reveal what Ireland searched for in 2022

As 2022 comes to a close, the Google Year in Search results give us a snapshot of what caught the country’s attention over the past year and what daily searches we all had in common.

This year’s top overall search is popular online word-game, Wordle! Wordle (& Heardle & Quordle & Globle & Nerdle & Foclach & Octordle) kept our brains ticking this year and while Wordle topped the overall list the game variations that popped up once the Wordle craze took hold featured on the most searched tech list. Wordle also featured on the How to list, with people turning to Google to find out ‘How to play Wordle’.

The war in Ukraine has also firmly shaped the results this year with Ukraine and Russia sitting in the top 10 overall searches and many people searching for Vladmir Putin. Search facilitated questions like, ‘What is NATO?’, ‘What is an Oligarch?’ and ‘What is the population of Ukraine?’ and provided the nation with answers in its effort to further understand the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Google Search helped us to get back out to the cinema this year as we searched for top new box office releases like The Batman, Uncharted, the classic film sequel, Top Gun: Maverick and Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin. It’s no surprise that the World Cup has found itself atop the sports-related searches as the tournament continues in Qatar. Ireland also keenly searched for the Australian Open and Ireland vs New Zealand (perhaps something to do with Ireland’s triumphant win against the All Blacks!).

Search also kept us all up to date this year on the latest Hollywood scandals with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard topping the most searched people list followed closely by Will Smith who hit the headlines after a dramatic 2022 Oscars Ceremony. We also looked to Search to stay informed on news cycles happening a bit closer to home as many of us searched for Liz Truss and Matt Hancock.

Every day, millions of people turn to Google to ask questions, and this year Covid related questions still feature in the top trending searches. ‘How to get a covid cert’ was the most searched question this year followed by ‘How to book a PCR’ .  Other questions on the list included ‘How to unblock your nose’ and ‘How to tie a tie’

In spite of the full reopening of bars and restaurants this year, the 2022 results confirmed that Ireland still loves a homemade cocktail with ‘Pornstar Martini Recipe’ topping the recipe list. Search also remained the go-to platform for inspiration for top food recipes like, ‘Mushroom Soup Recipe’, ‘Spaghetti Bolognese Recipe’ and ‘Overnight Oats Recipe’.

Ursula von der Leyen confirmed to attend 48th annual Business & Finance Awards

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has, this afternoon, been announced as the special guest for the 48th annual Business & Finance Awards. The event will take place at the Convention Centre in Dublin on Thursday, December 1st, and is expected to see more than 1,000 business, political and social leaders attend.

President Von Der Leyen, who has served as the Commission President since 2019, will travel to Ireland to accept the Sutherland Leadership Award. The accolade marks the 50th anniversary of Ireland joining the European Union, and recognises the EU’s contribution to the country across the last five decades.

Since its inception in 1974, the Business & Finance Awards Programme has honoured and hosted some of the most outstanding political and social leaders. This year, notable guests include:

  • An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin

  • Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union, Mairead McGuinness

  • Former Irish President, Mary Robinson

Established in 1974, the Business & Finance Awards is the longest-running and most prestigious business awards programme in Ireland and is an important recognition platform for the Irish business community. There is a phone for everyone here at all price points and send a message, feature phones is one great place to start for a digital detox yet giving you the basics and my pics is the Nokia 5710 Express Audio which combines two products in one, that being earbuds built into the device itself and the earbuds will work with other products too and not just the phone itself..

Apple Watch SE 2022 (44mm Starlight) first look, unboxing and set-up

Yes I went and did it, got another Apple Watch and this time the SE starlight 44mm. I am looking at the Ultra down the road however have seen none in stores yet and want to see just how big it looks on the wrist rather than stock image reviews or photos. As for the SE I think will be popular and good value for money and for those who have yet to jump into the smartwatch game no matter what OS your prefer the entry level offerings are probably best to begin with. Given Apple is more expensive than others this is a decent smartwatch at a decent entry price however probably too high for many which I agree with, I have come down from the Apple Watch 7 series to try it out and so far so good for my needs.

Ireland’s biggest gaming and esports festival “GamerFest” returns to the RDS in October

Originally established in 2017, GamerFest is a diverse and inclusive celebration of all things gaming and esports that has been developed with a community-first approach, welcoming visitors from across Ireland, the UK and Europe. 

Central to the event has been the GamerFest Live Stage which sees a huge variety of gaming content across the weekend including esports tournaments, special guest appearances and gaming challenges.

Visitors to the event can also expect a wide array of gaming entertainment including the latest titles, VR gaming and technology, expo hall and market place to grab the latest gaming equipment and gear. Esports tournaments will continue to be a huge part of GamerFest with a full list of tournaments, schedules and prize pools to be announced over the summer.

The festival is also planning to showcase the best in Irish gaming content creator talent with the launch of a new Creator Zone where visitors will get the chance to meet their favourite Twitch and YouTube creators at the event. Further announcements regarding special guests will be made by the organisers over the coming weeks.

In “Episode 1 – Be the Boss” players are introduced to the role of the Team Principal, the individual at the heart of every F1® team. Team Principals are responsible for overseeing every facet of the team, from recruiting and retaining world-class drivers and staff, to engineering car components and setting the all-important race weekend strategy. In F1® Manager 2022 players will drive every decision, both short and long-term, as they aim to lead their team to glory in the 2022 FIA Formula One World Championship™. Frontier CEO and Founder, David Braben, introduces the episode before handing over to Game Director, Andy Fletcher, who leads players through a ‘factory tour’ of F1® Manager 2022 alongside Art Director, Matt Dickinson, and members of the development team.
