Consumers warned to be wary for Black Friday fraud – Bank of Ireland

Bank of Ireland is warning consumers to be especially vigilant for fraud as Black Friday and Cyber Monday approach.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are key online shopping dates for many consumers, which also means fraudsters will be stepping up their activity. Bank of Ireland customers spent 54% more online during Black Friday last year compared to a standard Friday, with clothing (+104%) and electrical goods (+100%) seeing the largest increase.

For those shopping online this Black Friday or Cyber Monday, Bank of Ireland is providing tips to stay safe.

Black Friday / Cyber Monday tips:

  • Be careful with links in emails and texts – Fake links can lead to fake websites where you may be asked to share your personal banking details including activation codes.

Do not share your banking details, including your full online banking PIN, or other personal information.

  • Think before you click – make sure you double check website addresses for anything unusual.
  • Use trusted websites – check that the ‘https’ and the lock symbol is displayed. Exercise caution with Pop ups on your social media feed (fraudsters can pay to have their ads in front of you).
  • On a mobile device use trusted apps – it can be difficult to see the full web address on mobile if you are using a web browser so instead stick with trusted apps.
  • Use up to date anti-virus software on your computer – this will help protect it against malware.

Nicola Sadlier, Head of Fraud, Bank of Ireland said: “We are already starting to hear about Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, but shoppers need to be extra vigilant for fraud. Fraudsters like to inject an element of urgency into their offers or fake adverts, but don’t rush a transaction without checking things properly first. Verify if websites and apps are legitimate and be extremely careful with online adverts, texts or e-mails. Remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it’s probably fraud.”

To coincide with the busy pre-Christmas shopping period, Bank of Ireland has launched a new national fraud advertising campaign, reminding customers to Stop, Think and Check. The Bank is publishing a series of ‘True Crime’ videos with renowned cyberpsychologist Professor Mary Aiken providing insights and tips to help people protect themselves.  Visit Security Zone – Bank of Ireland Group Website

Tech Review – ZAGG Luxe case for the Google Pixel 8 Pro

The ZAGG Luxe case for the Google Pixel 8 Pro is a case for those who want it kept simple does the job and protects their expensive phone and this case does all that and looks well on the device keeping it clean and to the point, the usual cutouts are all there for the device with a raised lip on the front and larger corners giving it the protection required alongside the camera bar protection on the back of the device and hides it quite well not allowing dirt to get trapped in the corners like other cases do.

The back of the case has nice grip too and overall the simple design here is what stands out and the keys are sorted also with tactile buttons that work really well, the device can be placed either face down or rear down and you can still charge you Pixel 8 Pro wirelessly which is great and there is no interruption on any ports including the charging ports which in some cases all cables will not sit in correctly and this has happened with many devices in the past with me having the charge port to thin on the case.

You also get 10ft drop protection which is a standard there days with phone case and the material used is softer and better than harder materials form my past experiences with cases and this absorbs shock better.

Overall this is a good choice of case if you are in the market for one or plan to pick up the Pixel 8 Pro in the near future, check out the full video review below for more.

Drop Resistant up to 10ft| 3m: Luxe has been tested and proven to protect your phone from drops up to 10 feet (3 meters).

Antimicrobial Treatment: An antimicrobial agent with properties built in protects your case by inhibiting the growth of odor-causing bacteria and guarding against degradation from microorganisms.

100% Recycled Content : Luxe is made with 100% post-consumer recycled content.

Almost 8 in 10 Irish people against EU plans to allow 16-year-olds to drive

Almost eight in ten (77pc) Irish people are against new EU plans to allow children as young as 16 to get behind the wheel.

This is according to the findings of a new survey[1] by Peopl Insurance which examined attitudes towards a new proposal by the European Commission to allow children as young 16 to drive, as long as the vehicle is adapted with a speed limiting device set to a maximum speed of 45km. The proposal is part of major revision of EU driving rules[2] being discussed by the European Council and European Parliament.

Headline findings from the Peopl survey, published in the run-up to World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 19, which will see President Michael D Higgins hosting a private reception at Áras an Uachtaráin this week to mark the day[3], found that:

  • Most people (77pc) believe that 16 is too young an age to drive and that there would be an increase in road collisions if people of this age were allowed to legally get behind the wheel.
  • More than one in five (23pc) support the proposal citing that it would allow young people to become more independent.
  • Those age 21 – 24 (31pc) as well as Dubliners (29pc) are most likely to support the new rule to lower the minimum legal driving age to 16
  • Those aged 35 to 44 (19pc) are least likely to be in favour of the proposal.

Commenting on the survey findings, Paul Walsh, CEO of People Insurance said:

The European Commission has put forward the proposal to allow 16-year-olds to drive as a way of addressing mobility issues in remote areas[4}. So there are likely to be some who would welcome such a move, particularly those living in isolated rural areas. However, the proposal has proved controversial and led to concerns that such a move would simply add to the dangers on Irish roads – as borne out by the results of our survey, which found that the majority of Irish people do not believe it would be safe to allow children aged 16 to drive. Interestingly though, Dubliners were more likely to support the measure than those living in Ulster, Munster and Connacht.

In a year when the number of fatalities on Irish roads is hitting record highs[5], when pedestrian road deaths in Ireland are estimated to be at their highest in 15 years[6], and when more than twice as many children up to the age of 15 have been killed on Irish roads[7] than was the case in 2022, it is understandable that there is such widespread disquiet about the new proposal.”

Other highlights to emerge from the Peopl survey include:

  • Those living in Ulster are most opposed to the plan to allow 16-year-olds to drive: 90pc of Ulster people living in the Republic of Ireland and 100pc of Ulster people living in Northern Ireland were against the proposed measure.

Further commenting, Mr Walsh said:

“The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) – whose members include the Road Safety Authority in Ireland  – recently called on the European Commission to drop the proposal that would allow children aged 16 to drive[8].

It is clear that this new proposal needs to be considered carefully before it is introduced. But in addition, clearly more needs to be done at national level to alert young people to the dangers of driving on Irish roads – and to educate them around how they can drive more safely.”

What to Think About When Choosing a Home Printer

When picking a printer for your home, there are a few essential things to think about:

Purpose:

Figure out why you need a printer. Is it for everyday documents, high-quality photos, or a bit of both? Different printers are good at different things.

Type:

There are inkjet and laser printers. Inkjets are great for photos, while lasers are speedy and efficient for documents. Choose based on what you’ll print more.

Features:

Check if the printer has extra features you might need, like wireless printing, scanning, or copying. Some can even print from your phone or tablet.

Cost:

Consider the printer price and the cost of ink or toner. Sometimes, a cheaper printer becomes more expensive in the long run.

Size:

Make sure the printer fits in your space. Printers come in various sizes, so find one that suits your home setup.

  • Comparison is Key:

Become a pro at comparing prices. Check different online and offline stores to ensure you’re getting the best bang for your buck. Comparison websites can be your secret weapon.

  • Set a Budget, Stick to It:

While the excitement of Black Friday can be contagious, set a budget for your printer purchase. This ensures you stay focused and helps you focus on the best deals within your price range.

  • Act Fast, Embrace FOMO:

Black Friday waits for no one. If you spot a deal that fits your criteria, act fast. Embrace the fear of missing out (FOMO) and secure that printer before it’s gone.

In choosing a home printer, balance is key. Consider your needs, whether it’s for documents or vibrant photos. Look at features that make life easier, but stay mindful of costs. By finding the right fit, your home printer becomes a reliable sidekick, effortlessly turning your ideas into tangible prints. Happy printing!

Malware ‘Meal Kits’ Are Helping Attackers Steal Businesses’ Lunch, HP Finds

HP Ireland issued its quarterly HP Wolf Security Threat Insights Report, showing that thriving cybercriminal marketplaces are offering low-level attackers the tools needed to bypass detection and infect users.

Based on data from millions of endpoints running HP Wolf Security, key findings include:

  • Houdini’s Last Act: A new campaign targeted businesses with fake shipping documents concealing JavaScript malware. Its obscure code allowed the malware to slip past email defences and reach endpoints. The analysed attack delivered Houdini, a 10-year-old malware. This shows that, with the right pre-packaged tools from cybercrime marketplaces, hackers can still use vintage malware effectively by abusing the scripting features built into operating systems.
  • Cybercriminals Deploy “Jekyll and Hyde” Attacks: HP discovered a separate campaign launching two threads when a user opens a malicious scanned invoice designed to trick users. The “Jekyll” thread opens a decoy invoice copied from a legitimate online template, reducing suspicion, while the “Hyde” runs the malware in the background. This attack would be easy for threat actors to carry out, as pre-packaged kits to carry out this type of hacking have been advertised on forums for around €62 / $65 per month.

HP also identified attackers are hazing aspiring cybercriminals by hosting fake malware building kits on code sharing platforms like GitHub. These malicious code repositories trick wannabe threat actors into infecting their own machines. One popular malware kit, XWorm, is advertised on underground markets for as much as €474 / $500, driving resource-strapped cybercriminals to buy fake versions.

By isolating threats that have evaded detection tools on PCs – but still allowing malware to detonate safely – HP Wolf Security has specific insight into the latest techniques used by cybercriminals in the fast-changing cybercrime landscape. To date, HP Wolf Security customers have clicked on over 30 billion email attachments, web pages, and downloaded files with no reported breaches.

The report details how cybercriminals continue to diversify attack methods to bypass security policies and detection tools. Other findings include:

  • Archives were the most popular malware delivery type for the sixth quarter running, used in 36% of cases analysed by HP.
  • Despite being disabled by default, macro-enabled Excel add-in threats (.xlam) rose to the 7th most popular file extension abused by attackers in Q3, up from 46th place in Q2. Q3 also saw malware campaigns abusing PowerPoint add-ins.
  • At least 12% of email threats identified by HP Sure Click bypassed one or more email gateway scanners in both Q3, and Q2.
  • Q3 saw an increase in attacks using exploits in Excel (91%) and Word (68%) formats.
  • There was a 5%-point rise in PDF threats isolated by HP Wolf Security compared to Q2.
  • The top threat vectors in Q3 were email (80%) and downloads from browsers (11%).

Val Gabriel, Managing Director of HP Ireland, comments: “This quarter’s report has found that threat actors can easily and inexpensively purchase pre-packaged, user-friendly malware ‘meal kits’. We have found that these kits infect systems with a single click. So, instead of creating their own tools to breach security systems, low-level cybercriminals can now access kits that use living-off-the-land tactics. These stealthy in-memory attacks are often harder to detect due to security tool exclusions for admin use, like automation.

“While the tools for crafting stealthy attacks are readily available, threat actors still rely on the user clicking in order to infect systems,” continues Val Gabriel. “To neutralise the risk of falling victim to pre-packaged malware kits, businesses should isolate any high-risk activities, like opening email attachments, link clicks, and downloads, as doing so, significantly minimises the potential of a breach by reducing the attack surface.”

HP Wolf Security runs risky tasks in isolated, hardware-enforced virtual machines running on the endpoint to protect users, without impacting their productivity. It also captures detailed traces of attempted infections. HP’s application isolation technology mitigates threats that slip past other security tools and provides unique insights into intrusion techniques and threat actor behaviour.

About the data

This data was gathered from consenting HP Wolf Security customers from July-September 2023.

Tech Review – SOUNDPEATS Air4 Pro In-ear aptX Lossless Wireless Earbuds

The SOUNDPEATS Air4 Pro In-ear aptX Lossless Wireless Earbuds is one of the next latest pair of earbuds on offer from the brand we have been testing products with for some time now and continue to deliver great audio experiences at affordable prices which as I always say is great for the consumer with choice and SOUNDPEATS has plenty of choice on their store no matter what budget you might have.

The Air4 Pro might look familiar if you are fan of the brand but they are clean stylish and comfortable to wear at all times and have a nice finish to them as all their earbuds do with a two tone copper accents and glossy Black housing. They have a small stem and of course tips and ensure you pick the right ones to get the best fit and sound and do the adaptive EQ test.

OK so how do these sound them with a pro name attached then are they worthy of the PRO moniker tech companies slap on their products? Ohh yes there is a notable difference here with the Air 4 Pro, The 13mm drives gives great ANC and in fact I tested this beside several noisey items in the house such as my air fryer  and it wiped it out completely which was unexpected and for the rest of my test items they just vanished into the mist with sound, Super ANC to get things going here.

Volume is plenty aloud really great bass to be seen here too and if you like bass your in for a treat however there is also the option to use the Soundpeats App to customise things around to suit your needs and the app works well as always with a suite of options to toy around with but the bass is just brilliant here full stop and mixed with the ANC power and volume you can forget what is going on around you which is what I want when listening to my tunes, lets not forget you have normal mode and transparency mode here too and again works great..Also this time around we have in-ear detection built in which some previous models lacked. Call quality also seemed fine both ends during my testing and overall a good conversation to be had and clear.

SOUNDPEATS APP Air 4 Pro – techbuzzireland

Overall with the audio quality these are not to be sniffed at by any means, highs lows and mids fine, not lag latency not tinny sounds when maxed out and for me one of their best pair of earbuds yet I have test, ohh we have more to show you soon so stay tuned for those reviews soon.
