Children spending 4+ hours on screens face 61% higher depression risk

new Nature Portfolio study reveals that excessive screen time in children is associated with significantly detrimental mental health outcomes across several disorders: ADHD, anxiety, behavioural problems and even depression.

According to clinicians from Flow Neuroscience, a company behind the first FDA-approved non-drug, non-invasive depression treatment, the issue is even bigger than the study reveals, as these children are often overprescribed antidepressants and have limited treatment alternatives due to their age.

Based on data from over 50,000 US children aged 6-17, the study revealed that excessive screen time, categorized as four or more hours per day, is associated with increased odds of mental health issues, raising the likelihood of depression by 61%, anxiety by 45%, behavioural or conduct problems by 24% and ADHD by 21%.

“What is most concerning about these results is the high probability of depression,” says Dr. Hannah Nearney, M.D., clinical psychiatrist and UK Medical Director at Flow Neuroscience. “While there are effective treatments for depression, treatment from a young age can present challenges that may further negatively impact a patient’s life, partly due to the side effects associated with antidepressant use. Unfortunately, non-drug alternatives are often limited to talking therapy, leaving a gap in the provision of services and exposing vulnerable children to increased risk.”

According to the study, physical activity emerges as the most influential protective factor between screen time and mental health problems, accounting for up to 39% of that relationship.

In comparison, irregular bedtimes are culpable for up to 23,9%, and short sleep duration explains around 7,24% of the relationship between screen time and mental health issues.

“What’s most important is that we now know the main determinants and protective factors regarding a range of mental health issues in children. The odds can be significantly reduced with adjustments in behaviours such as physical activity, and expanding the tools we can use to combat these illnesses,” highlighted Dr. Nearney.

The data from the study also indicated that this problem will escalate, as nearly one in every three children spends too much of their time in front of screens, suggesting the behaviour is normalized.

Meeting guidelines for physical activity (which is more than 60 minutes per day) is already low, with only one out of five children achieving this standard. And just one out of four children maintains a consistent weekday bedtime routine.

Given the limitations and risks associated with prescribing SSRIs to children, including a small but measurable increase in suicidality, there is a growing need to explore alternative, non-pharmacological treatments.

In this context, the first FDA-approved non-drug treatment, based on transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), is expected to become available in the US later this year. However, it is not approved for children under 18.

“Due to long waiting times, not enough attention is given to children and adolescents with mental health problems such as depression. Too often, they’re pushed into the trial-and-error pathways with antidepressants, even at a young age. We hope that such tools as brain stimulation will become available for these young people too, but what we can do in the meantime is to follow the suggestion of studies like the latter one, and not only avoid screen time, but also regulate our sleep schedules, add physical activity to children’s daily lives, and explore other similar options,” highlighted Dr. Nearney.

Even though currently, children don’t have non-drug, at-home, FDA-approved tools for depression treatment, an increasing amount of research supports that such technologies as tDCS are safe for pediatric use.

In the meantime, this Nature study reframes youth mental health as largely a preventable behavioural challenge and shows that many risks stem from modifiable habits like screen use, physical activity, and sleep.

NBI end of year update: over 450,000 homes, farms and businesses now ready to connect

National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company responsible for delivering the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), has announced its final quarterly update for the contract year ending 31 January 2026, confirming that all surveying and design work is now complete and that 82% of the entire network is built with those premises available for a connection. The remainder (18%) is under construction with the main infrastructure build scheduled to complete this year.

Minister for Arts, Culture, Communications, Media and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, T.D., said:

“The progress being delivered under the National Broadband Plan represents one of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects ever undertaken by the State. With the rollout now running ahead of schedule nationally, the scale of achievement is clear and demonstrates what can be delivered through sustained investment and a strong focus on delivery.

“Tens of thousands of kilometres of fibre have been laid, and communities right across the country are now seeing the tangible benefits of high-speed connectivity. This programme is transforming rural Ireland and reflects the Government’s commitment to ensuring that every home, farm and business, no matter how remote, can participate fully in Ireland’s digital future.”

Performance update:
By contract year end (31 January 2026), NBI has delivered:

  • 100% of all surveying and design work is complete;
  • 100% of the network either built or currently under construction;
  • 451,433 premises passed, representing a 33% year-on-year increase;
  • 164,708 premises connected, representing a 43% year-on-year increase.
  • 63,064km of fibre cable laid, enough to circumnavigate the Earth 1.5 times.

There are now 451,433 homes, farms and businesses passed with NBI fibre across the National Broadband Plan Intervention Area. When a premises is passed, an order can be placed to connect to high-speed fibre broadband on the NBI network through a choice of over 50 broadband providers actively selling on the network.

According to the recent ComReg Quarterly Report, more than one million premises across Ireland are now subscribed to fibre-to-the-home broadband, and National Broadband Ireland is encouraging premises in the Intervention Area to check availability in their area and order today.

TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: “This year’s results demonstrate the sheer scale and momentum of the National Broadband Plan. With every part of the network now designed and either built or under construction, and over 450,000 premises ready to connect, we are firmly into the final delivery phase of this once-in-a-generation infrastructure project.

More than 164,000 homes, farms and businesses are already connected to high-speed fibre on the NBI network, transforming how people live, work and do business in rural Ireland. With the final phase of construction now underway, we are on track to complete the main rollout by the end of this year.”

NBI’s fibre broadband rollout under the National Broadband Plan is delivering broadband services to what is known as the State’s Intervention Area, which includes the most remote and rural parts of Ireland where commercial operators have no plans to deliver high-speed broadband. The Intervention Area now stands at 566,000 premises which signals an increase of c.29,000 since the time of contract signing.

People living and working in rural Ireland can enter their Eircode on the NBI website, www.nbi.ie, to check if their home or business is included in the rollout and find out how to get connected.

As the main rollout phase of NBI’s network nears completion, demand for connections continues to grow strongly. 164,708 premises are now connected to the NBI network, with take-up rates continuing to exceed original projections and international benchmarks, particularly in areas where the network has been live for longer.

NBI is now fully focused on the final stages of construction and accelerating connections across the country, ensuring every premises in the Intervention Area can avail of future-proofed, high-speed broadband.

All stats are correct for our contract year, ending 31 January 2026. For the latest stats on our programme delivery, please see www.nbi.ie.

Think Before You Scan: That QR Code May Be a Scam

In quishing attacks, cybercriminals place QR codes containing malicious links in public places, such as parking meters or restaurants, or send these QR codes via email. Such attacks can result in financial losses, stolen personal data, or compromised device, cybersecurity experts warn.

January XX, 2026. At the start of January, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a warning against cyber attacks organised by North Korean cybercriminals who used fake QR codes to trick users into obtaining personal information. According to cybersecurity experts, similar attacks, also known as “quishing”, are on the rise not only in the US but in other countries, as cybercriminals look for new ways to profit.

Quishg (QR code phishing) is a phishing technique where cybercriminals try to trick users into scanning QR codes that lead to malicious websites. Organisations in several countries have issued warnings that bad actors place these QR codes on top of legitimate ones in public places such as kiosks, restaurants, or parking meters.

For example, last year, UK government institutions have warned users of fake QR stickers on parking machines, with victims being sent to spoofed payment pages. Meanwhile, the US Federal Trade Commission issued a similar warning about unexpected packages containing QR codes that led to phishing websites.

Such fake QR codes can also be shared online. For example, the FBI said that a North Korean state-sponsored cybercriminal group, called Kimusky, targeted employees of organizations by embedding malicious QR codes in an email. In one such instance, a QR code was presented as a way to download additional information.

According to cybersecurity experts at Planet VPN, a free virtual private network (VPN) provider, no matter where a fake QR code is placed, the scheme is similar. After scanning it, a user is often forwarded to a fake phishing website mimicking a legitimate one, such as a restaurant’s website, where cybercriminals may try to charge a user’s credit card.

According to Konstantin Levinzon, co-founder of Planet VPN, such scams can lead not only to financial losses but also to compromised devices.

“Quishing is phishing–just in a different wrapper. A QR code can lower people’s guard because this technology became ubiquitous only during the pandemic, and the threat still isn’t as widely recognized. It also shifts the “risky click” from a visible link to a quick scan, making the danger easier to miss. Attackers are refining these tactics every year and constantly finding new ways to trick users,” he says.

According to Levinzon, one reason why cybercriminals may favour QR codes in emails instead of regular phishing emails is that QR codes often bypass anti-phishing and scam filters, because these often analyze only text and links, but don’t analyze images.

And even if anti-spam filters in emails are equipped with QR code detection, cybercriminals often find new ways to bypass them, for example, by making QR codes in different colors.

Cybersecurity researchers at Proofpoint estimate that during the first half of last year, there were 4,2 million QR code-related threats. However, Levinzon says that the number is likely higher because many QR code scams are undetected.

When it comes to protecting against the growing threat, users are advised to be more deliberate about when and why they scan a QR code. If after scanning a QR code, a person is forwarded to a website that asks for payment or log-in details, this is a real warning sign.

Meanwhile, if a QR code is sent from an unknown sender via email, Levinzon advises contacting the sender directly before entering login credentials or downloading files.

“We recommend applying the same logic everywhere: stay skeptical whether you receive a message from a coworker or on your personal social media account. However, vigilance is only part of the story. To maximize security, users also need basic safeguards – use a VPN on public Wi-Fi, install updates promptly, use strong passwords, and enable multi-factor authentication on all accounts,” he says.

Monthly TV Market Tracker Reveals Shifting Leadership

Global TV shipments declined 1% YoY in November 2025, according to Counterpoint Research’s latest Global Monthly TV Tracker, reversing the growth seen in the previous two months. In MoM terms, the shipments fell 15% in November, as September and October shipments had been boosted by inventory accumulation ahead of year-end peak sales.

Samsung remained the leading global TV brand in November 2025, although its shipments declined 3% YoY, resulting in a modest decrease in market share, from 18% in November 2024 to 17%.

TCL continued to expand its presence in the global TV market, narrowing the gap with market leader Samsung. Despite the continued sluggishness in the Chinese market, TCL’s global TV shipments surged 20% YoY, demonstrating the company’s growing competitiveness.

Associate Director Sujeong Lim said, “Offering high-definition technologies such as MiniLED at competitive prices, TCL has received great response from emerging markets such as Eastern Europe and the Middle East and Africa (MEA), which are relatively cost-sensitive.”

Another Chinese brand, Hisense, maintained its third place, but its shipments declined 13% YoY. This manufacturer is heavily reliant on its home market, which accounted for 27% of its total shipments in the first half of 2025, and was hit hard by a 24% YoY decline there.

LG Electronics recorded a 7% YoY increase in shipments, raising its market share from 8% to 9%. With comparatively lower exposure to China, LG benefited from strong momentum in the North American and Latin American markets, where shipments grew 8% and 29% YoY, respectively.

Thanks to the successful completion of the Vizio acquisition in December 2024, Walmart saw significant YoY growth, quickly moving up to the top five. With its own brand, ONN, and subsidiary Vizio, the company is now emerging as Samsung’s strongest competitor in North America.

Research Director Bob O’Brien said, “For the year through November, Samsung’s lead over TCL remained stronger. Samsung’s share of TV shipments through November held steady at 16%, as total shipments decreased by 0.6%. In 2026, Samsung will remain the global TV market leader, while Chinese brands such as TCL, Hisense and Xiaomi will rapidly expand their presence across various segments. In particular, they are increasing shipments in high-growth segments such as MiniLED and mid-to-large-size screens, increasing competitive pressure.”
