Survey reveals businesses adopting smart-tech solutions for property security and surveillance

SME users include farms, hotels, health surgeries, embassies and even a castle

A recent survey of UK customers by Blink, a leading provider of affordable, wire-free HD home security systems reveals that a high percentage of Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are using smart-tech systems to monitor and protect their properties. We here also use such gadjets and find them very usefull and easy to use with little or no tech know how to set such equiment up we can see why these systems are becoming popular.. See our BLINK REVIEW

95 SMEs survey respondents use Blink camera systems to monitor their businesses. This is evidence of an emerging trend of SMEs who are shunning traditionally more expensive and complex business property security measures such as hard-wired, monitored CCTV systems, alarm systems and manned security patrols.

All types of SMEs turning to smart-tech security solutions

The highest proportion of SME respondents (30%) described themselves as “small tech businesses”, followed by “small offices” (17%) and “retail outlets” (12%). SMEs who listed their organisation types as “other” (28%) disclosed what type of business they operate, the range includes: embassies, farms, doctor and dental surgeries, storage facilities, children’s nurseries, hotels, construction sites, landlords, catteries, elderly care homes, police dog kennels and even a castle, all of which are using Blink systems to help secure their business properties.

The average size of the organisation is typically 1 to 5 employees (45%) followed by sole proprietors (28%) and SMEs who have more than 10 employees (20%).

Remote surveillance rated primary reason for purchase

SME respondents rated “keeping an eye on the business while I’m not there” (73%) as the primary reason for having a Blink system at their organisation, followed in second place by “protecting my property from burglary and vandalism” (41%).

Dave Coles, Information Manager, Severndroog Castle elaborated on the use of the Blink technology at the castle: “We rely on technology to underpin and augment the work of our mainly volunteer staff. Our Blink cameras are helping us monitor footfall and provide out of hours security.”

David Laubner, Head of Digital Marketing and eCommerce for Blink, comments: “The benefit to small business owners of using Blink cameras to protect their properties is that they are alerted immediately to any unusual activity via their smartphone. Using Blink in isolation or with other security measures gives SMEs owners peace of mind.

Cloud CIX breaks ground on ambitious €6m expansion plan #CloudCIX #Data

Cloud CIX the largest commercial data centre outside Dublin, has announced ambitious plans to expand its capabilities by 500%, which will be a game changer for the Cork and Munster region.

The development, located in Hollyhill, will be completed in April 2018 – to coincide with Cloud CIX’s tenth anniversary – and will nearly double the footprint of the site to 32,000 square feet.  More significantly this extension allows CIX to extend capability from 500kW to 3 MW, making it a significant facility by international standards. The technical specification for the new build is one of the best in the world, allowing clients achieve both high power density and low and industry leading energy efficiency.

Cloud CIX is the EU data centre with the lowest latency (the transit time for a message to reach its destination) to North America, and the Irish data centre with the lowest latency to London, which arguably makes it the best single data centre in the world from which to serve digital assets. This will provide Cork and the Munster region with a competitive advantage for many sectors including Financial Services.

This €6million investment with an expected follow-on investment of a further €6million in IT infrastructure, is the second major expansion since Cloud CIX was established in 2008, and follows the opening of a second data hall in 2014.

With ISO27001:2013 and ISO 9001:20015 registration, Cloud CIX more than 150 small and large clients including Dell EMC, Masterlink Logistics, Bon Secours Hospital Group, Populo, Viatel, and the PM Group. It continues to enjoy rapid growth due to the expanding service offering and the superb connectivity, low latency and a highly resilient network, which are now essential for modern businesses.  With the new expansion plans not only will Cloud CIX have enhanced capacity but its team will be able to provide a one stop shop, full suite of turnkey IT services for clients.

Commenting on the expansion, CEO and owner, Jerry Sweeney said

“Since opening the business in 2008, we have seen an amazing increase in the sophistication our customers’ demands from us. Initially we were focused on networking, power and cooling but soon our customers needed managed services. Cyber Security and Cloud Services are the challenges today. At Cloud CIX we anticipate the demands of the marketplace and we continue to invest and deliver capability to match these demands”.

This significant development is big news for Cork and beyond, as it further strengthens the region as an IT power centre, helping to attract even more businesses in the sector to locate here.  Jerry Sweeney has also adopted a policy of ‘shopping local’ and has worked with Cork based companies and suppliers wherever possible in the expansion process.

Speaking about Cork, Jerry added

“I really believe Cork has the potential to be a major connectivity centre similar to Marseilles. With twelve major subsea cables, Marseilles connects Europe to Africa across the Mediterranean and via the Suez Canal to the Far East. Cork should focus on becoming a switching centre with connections to North and South America, mainland Europe, and the Far East via the Arctic. With Cork’s existing renewables focused power infrastructure and ever improving subsea connectivity, Cork will attract more data centre business. Cloud CIX continues to lead the way on this path for the region.”

CEO of Cork Chamber of Commerce, Conor Healy said

“We warmly welcome this announcement as we see the enhanced and expanded facility as being a huge asset to the region. Superb online connectivity is an essential ingredient for all businesses today and Cloud CIX have played a significant role in delivering this to the region. The enhanced offering will make the region even more attractive and we will use this as a key selling point when marketing the region to businesses who looking to open new locations”

Black Duck partners with #GoogleCloud Platform to support secure development and deployment of cloud applications and containers

Black Duck, the global leader in automated solutions for securing and managing open source software, today announced it is a Google Cloud Technology Partner. Through the collaboration, Google customers can use Black Duck solutions to accelerate production use of the cloud and containers as well as increase security and productivity with automated intelligence, visibility and control as they move workloads to the Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Organisations are increasingly deploying applications in the cloud and moving into containerised delivery models, powered by open source architectures. These new models enable software innovation with speed and agility. At the same time, DevOps and Security teams are looking for increased visibility and control over what is inside of their organisations’ applications and container images. It is important for open source security to be integrated with new cloud and container architectures and DevOps processes

Black Duck is releasing its flagship Black Duck Hub solution as a cloud service on Google Cloud Launcher Marketplace, enabling organisations to deploy Hub on GCP.  Hub allows Google Cloud customers to scan applications and container images, identify all the open source components, detect and analyse known security vulnerabilities, compliance issues, and code-quality risks, and enable policy management to control risks and their remediation. Additionally, Hub dynamically monitors the scanned code and provides alerts on newly discovered open source vulnerabilities or policy violations. Google customers can also use Hub to access the Black Duck KnowledgeBase, the world’s most comprehensive data store of open source components and risk intelligence.

With Black Duck Hub on GCP, users can automate security and compliance as a part of their development lifecycle and continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipeline, allowing DevOps and Security teams to enhance speed and agility while controlling risks.

  • Black Duck Hub integration with Google Container Engine (GKE) allows users to scan and monitor container images in the Google Container Registry (GCR).
  • Black Duck Hub can be used with third-party CI/CD tools on GCP, including Jenkins on Google Container Engine in a multi-node Kubernetes cluster, or with Bamboo, Team City, Maven, and Gradle.
  • Black Duck’s IDE integrations allow software developers to select safe and secure open source using plug-ins to Eclipse and Visual Studio.

“For very clear economic and productivity reasons organisations are highly motivated to migrate their applications to the cloud. Because open source comprises most of the code in their applications and containers, they need to be sure the open source is secure and compliant. Black Duck Hub and Google Cloud provide that assurance,” said Black Duck CEO Lou Shipley.

“In order to deliver high-quality software, we’re constantly scanning our products for vulnerabilities and security threats,” said Aram Price, Senior Software Engineer, Pivotal. “We collaborated with Black Duck to automate security scanning during development, and with the most recent release of Black Duck Hub we can also automate deployment to Google Cloud.”

Availability

Google Cloud customers can install Black Duck Hub through the Google Cloud Launcher Marketplace, allowing them to run scans directly in the Google Cloud environment. Hub is available with a 14-day free trial for Google customers.

Irish Tech #Startup Introduces First Ever Wearable Dash Payment Wristband #Bitcart #Festy

Until now, there has never been a successful, wearable device that lets people use a digital currency to pay for anything at a merchant’s Point of Sale. Today, Irish tech company Bitcart are launching a prototype wristband, called Festy, that allows people to pay for drinks and food at bars, restaurants and social events, like festivals, using their Dash holdings. Powered by a QR code/NFC integration, Festy is being physically unveiled tomorrow at Opera Incubator in Cork, Ireland.

It is the first wearable payment method of it’s kind that uses blockchain technology to make payments without a wallet, phone, or credit card. Because Dash boasts InstantSend technology, transactions are settled in seconds, and the fees for the merchant are much lower than any credit or card.

Creators of Bitcart, an Irish-based discount gift card platform, have today announced the launch of a landmark product called Festy, a QR code and NFC integrated wristband that allows festival and bar goers to pay for food and drinks using Dash, all without a wallet, a cell phone, or credit card. Festy is linked directly to a consumer’s Dash account, so funds are not stored on the Festy platform and transactions for goods occur within seconds, while the merchants have the ability to cash out their Dash for the equivalent fiat currency. Dash is the world’s leading digital currency for payments and currently the 6th most valued cryptocurrency at over $1.3 billion USD. Dash’s InstantSend technology allows the digital currency to make instant payments. In the next update, Dash will be able to process half a million transactions with extremely low fees, roughly ten cents per transaction. With no card numbers or private keys displayed while making purchases, Festy ensures maximum privacy, and users can top-up their wristbands at branded ATMs, or make simple transfers online.

CEO Graham de Barra said,

“Our partnership with Dash makes the perfect payment solution for everyday transactions. Unlike existing traditional bank payments that take a 2-5% fee, there is no cost on receiving Dash for merchants. Merchants accepting payments will never have a chargeback, and there are potentially enormous savings to be made compared to the crippling fees from existing payment solutions. We believe this is the payment processor of the future.”

Festivals are currently suffering from an extensive cash flow issue. Standard ATMs typically charge a high rate of $3-5 per withdrawal at festivals or abroad, and the middlemen supplying the machine require high compensation. On top of that, users can wait in line for up to two hours just to withdrawal their money at large festivals. These events also see a great amount of loss and theft, lacking a secure place to keep your wallet, further proving that cash is an insufficient means of transaction. Festy ensures that your money stays firmly clasped to you, helps create steady cash flows between the merchant and the consumer, and maintains a positive festival reputation.

VP of Business Development for Dash Daniel Diaz said.

“Festy’s multi-functional wristband is compatible with every Point-of-Sale system where Visa contactless is accepted, as well as on any mobile phone or computer with NFC tags and offline payments using QR codes. This versatility is adaptable to any environment including fields, beaches, camping sites as well as bars, restaurants and conferences. Festy is an affordable, scalable, and secure payment solution, particularly for millennials and Gen Z who don’t want to carry or worry about their wallet, handbag, cash or backpack at every moment during their social calendar,” Bitcart CEO Graham de Barra said.

The Festy prototype will be unveiled tomorrow at the high tech Opera incubator in Cork, Ireland. Each attendee will receive a pre-filled wristband and invitation. The wearable will allow everyone to buy food and drinks with a single scan of their wristband. Guests will also be able to tip the musician through Festy. When the prototype is ready for a full public rollout (at the end of Q3), it will be available to purchase on www.festypay.com.

DataSolutions’ 5th Annual Secure Computing Forum hits the Aviva Stadium Sept 21st.

DataSolutions’ 5th annual Secure Computing Forum will take place on Thursday, 21st September at the Avia Stadium. The Forum is one of Ireland’s largest dedicated IT security events. This year’s event is especially relevant, coming as it does after months of prolonged cyber-attacks that have affected companies all over the world.

Attendees will receive advice from key security players on how to secure their businesses. Speakers at this year’s event include David Blunkett, former UK Government Home Secretary and chair of the International Cyber Security Projection Alliance and current honorary chair of the Cyber Essentials Direct Ltd; Jenny Radcliffe, a social-engineering expert known as ‘the people hacker’; and Misha Glenny, award-winning writer and broadcaster, and author of the book McMafia, The Globalisation Of Organised Crime

David Keating, sales manager, Data Solutions

Keynote speakers at this year’s event include:

  • David Blunkett, former UK Government Home Secretary and chair of the International Cyber Security Projection Alliance and current honorary chair of the Cyber Essentials Direct Ltd
  • Jenny Radcliffe, an expert in social engineering known as ‘The People Hacker’; and Misha Glenny, award-winning writer and broadcaster, and author of the bookMcMafia, The Globalisation Of Organised Crime

The past year has seen rapid growth in cyber-attacks, as well as an increase in the scale and sophistication of threats being levelled against individuals and companies. Irish organisations must evolve to remain one step ahead of these developing threats. In addition, the impending General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) legislation will make it necessary for businesses to review their data-processing policies and work towards compliance to avoid fines of up to €20 million or 4% of global turnover, depending on which is greater.

DataSolutions’ Secure Computing Forum will aim to foster dialogue amongst key security players in Ireland and provide best-practice advice to companies seeking to defend their interests from cybercrime. Leading IT vendor Check Point will return as the host sponsor of the event for the fifth year running.

IoT is a significant development that presents significant cybersecurity issues which need to be addressed, while ransomware is now a term that is familiar to almost every Irish business. Having been on the rise since its inception, ransomware cost companies over $1 billion worldwide in 2016[1]. Organisations now need to take proactive measures to protect their interests from this growing threat.

As well as these topics, this year’s seminar will ask whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the future of cybersecurity and take a closer look at the clearly defined measures that businesses should implement to take responsibility for cloud security. Happy Birthday to Google Plus  It is 6. #Google #GooglePlus #Infographic

Happy Birthday, Google Plus!

The second most popular and largest social network in the world is turning 6 years old today and hence we thought we would share this important news  by sharing an infographic all about how far it’s come and what it has achieved in the last 6 years:

All we know is we can Invite our friends to a hangout for cake and presents and a game of “Pin the +1 on the Donkey.” Google+ turns 6 years old on June 28th

Since its launch in 2011,Google’s social network has received mixed reviews, and has a long way to go to reach the ubiquity of its chief rival, Facebook. But Google+ has been hugely successful for Google in driving the unification of the full suite of Google products.

It’s fitting to mark the occasion with this infographic from Fullestop all about Google’s social network and Google’s history with social media in general. Google has been in the news of late perhaps for all the wrong reasons but check this infographic out..

Liberty Games – Voice-Controlled Games Room using Google Home #gaming #googlehome

At Liberty Games, the Google Home has been pressed into service as the ultimate games room assistant. Aspects of the games room have been cleverly automated and controlled with voice commands alone, using specially-programmed custom commands and with Raspberry Pis and a Chromecast interacting with the machines.  Will Jobbins tells us more….

Using Google’s online testing tool, Liberty Games created a series of Actions, which are essentially apps designed to make the Home compatible with the machines in the games room. Part of this was programming the command, so that the Home knew what was being asked of it, and also programming the response, so the Home responded correctly and forwarded the demand on to the server that controls the machines.

The result is, firstly, an air hockey table and a foosball table that read out the current score on demand. Both are fitted with infrared beams in the goal mouth that detect a goal when broken. The beams are wired into a Raspberry Pi which keeps a tally of the score, so when given the command “Ok Google, what is the score?”, the Home responds with an accurate response: “The score is 1 – 0”.

Next, there is that glorious Rock-Ola Bubbler jukebox. This was simplicity itself to set up. A Google Chromecast is plugged into the jukebox, enabling streamed media to be transmitted through it. Then it was a simple process to rig up a voice command which connects the jukebox to an online streaming service like Spotify, and request specific tunes, genres or artists on demand.

The Cosmic multiplay arcade machine is built with a coin mech, but also features a ‘freeplay’ button that adds credits to the game. In order to add credits, a Raspberry Pi, on demand via Google Home, sends a signal to the game board as if the button has been pushed. In this way, credits are added to the game by voice, enabling players to stock up on credits before they even approach the machine.

The last, and most complicated conversion is the coin-operated Supreme Winner pool table. This already has an electric motor which rotates the ball tray when the requisite number of coins are inserted. They hooked this up to a Raspberry Pi so that now, the pool table releases all the balls when requested, ready to be racked up.

With this project Liberty Games has demonstrated the versatility of the Google Home, and the way in which it can be programmed to take control of any part of your environment. And, of course, a voice-controlled games room is probably the coolest thing ever. Right?
