High earnings and job security top two career preferences for Gen Z students in Ireland today

New research published this week by global employer branding experts Universum, part of leading hiring platform IrishJobs.ie, has revealed that high future earnings and job security are the top two motivators for today’s third-level graduates across Ireland when considering their future career.

Indicating a growing concern amongst students around the impact of inflation and the associated rise in the cost of living, high earnings, and job security rank in first and second place. This is followed by a friendly work environment (3rd), good work-life balance (4th) and a clear path for advancement (5th).

The research, conducted as part of The Most Attractive Employers Index Ireland 2022, was conducted amongst 8,199 third-level students across Business/Economics, Engineering, IT, Natural Science, Humanities, Law, and Health/Medicine in Ireland, and provides a snapshot of the key attributes that today’s students are looking for in their future employer.

The lasting impact of the pandemic on ways of working is also evident in the ranking for flexible working conditions, which has risen by two places since 2021, now positioned at number eight.

Difference between the genders

The research also reveals key differences in workplace priorities between male and female students, with women more motivated by the social responsibility of an organisation and men more focused on advancement and innovation. For example, female students attach greater importance to employer ethics (5th) and a sense of purpose (10th) than their male counterparts, who list these at number 21 and 16 respectively.

Male students, meanwhile, attach greater importance to innovation (7th), as well as base salary (2nd). For female students, innovation comes in at number 15, while competitive base salary ranks much further down the scale at number 17.

Base salary expectations

Meanwhile, men and women have different expectations when it comes to what this base salary will be. While male students expect to earn €40,827 in their first full-time job after graduation, female students say they expect to earn €37,097, a pay gap of 9%.

Although a gap between men and women is evident within all the study fields included in the survey, it is highest amongst Natural Science students, with females in this field of study expecting to earn on average €4,344 less on an annual basis than their male counterparts.

Year-on-year growth in graduate jobs

According to IrishJobs.ie, the number of roles advertised for graduates grew by 94% in the second quarter of this year.

Quarter-on-quarter, the number of graduate roles grew by 13%, with jobs up 30% on pre-Covid (2019) levels. Companies posting the most jobs for graduates include food, engineering, financial services, and professional services firms.

Insights

Commenting on the results of the research, Steve Ward, UK and Ireland Business Director, Universum said:

There is a whole new cohort of Gen Z and Millennial students who will be looking to enter the workplace from this month. Employers that want to attract and retain this latest generation of talent need to ensure their recruitment and attraction strategies reflect what graduates are looking for in their employer.

“With high earnings and job security the top two overall preferences, it’s clear that young people today are being impacted by the uncertainty that’s abounding in today’s economy, whether that’s inflation, the cost of living or house prices, and are looking for a job to provide them with the stability to ensure they can provide for themselves and their family into the future.

“Young people today are graduating into a very different working environment than many would have expected to when starting their degrees. After witnessing its evolution over the past two years, this year’s group of students are even more keen than last year’s graduation cohort to explore the benefits of flexible working. As the number of graduate roles increases, making this more of an employees’ market, employers will need to illustrate to potential recruits how they are competing with others in this regard.

“Finally, with the results showing different expectations amongst both men and women when it comes to competitive base salary, even within the same field of study, it’s clear that employers have a key role to play to ensure commitment and communication of parity of remuneration amongst the sexes for similar roles, notwithstanding employee negotiation skills at interview stage.

“Although men and women have different priorities when it comes to their preferred employer attributes, something which will help employers who are striving to improve the gender balance in their workforce, remuneration is a key indicator of how much a person is valued within an organisation in comparison to their peers. Unless and until women are actively reminded of their financial worth within the workplace, the gender pay gap is set to continue.”

Internal Job Cover Letter: How To Express Interest

Many job seekers applying for a new position inside the company think that their reputation is all that matters. Sure, feedback from your current supervisor is important, and it’ll definitely affect your prospects. But so is your job application, including your resume and especially your cover letter. So here are a few tips that’ll help you write a top-notch internal job cover letter

#1 Communicate Your Commitment to the Company

One of the reasons why companies often start with internal hiring is that they’re looking for a person who is well-familiar with the organization and has a nice track record within it. That’s why it’s critical that a professional cover letter for internal position clearly communicates your commitment to continuing to grow with the company.

When a hiring manager or prospective boss is reading applications for internal job opportunities, they want to see what you’ve already achieved while working at the company as well as what you’re hoping to achieve going forward. So your most important tasks are to highlight your accomplishments and express genuine dedication to the employer.

Don’t go overboard, though. Job seekers who claim that they’d like to stay with the company “for the rest of their professional life” when applying for a job risk coming across as insincere. It’s better to leave one’s long-term goals for the interview. For now, simply make sure that the recruiter or the person in charge of hiring decisions knows you’re not looking for a temporary job. A place you can also try is advertising resume writers from resumeperk

#2 Tell Why You’re Interested in the Position

But it’s not enough to show your commitment. If you want to land an interview and hopefully get hired, include why exactly you’re interested in the position you’re applying for. Be honest, but not too honest. If the number one reason is money, don’t mention it in your cover letter. The Human Resources Team won’t appreciate it.

Instead, focus on the responsibilities the new position implies and the opportunities for professional growth it opens. Perhaps, it’s something that you’ve had a chance to try in your current role and really enjoyed (say, mentoring or assisting in talent acquisition). Then, you can write that you’ve realized you’re good at it and would like to do it more.

Alternatively, a time-tested and believable response to the question of why you’d like to change your job is that you’ve reached the ceiling in your current position. It’s not uncommon for candidates with years of work experience to feel like there’s no more room for them to grow. It’s okay to admit this.

#3 Make Sure to Explain What You Bring to the Table

Next, any internal job cover letter (or any cover letter, for that matter) should include the reasons why a candidate thinks they’re a good fit for the position. All employers are looking for competence and an impressive qualification. As an applicant, you’re supposed to assure them that you have a lot to offer.

Dedicate a paragraph or two to addressing the job requirements of the position you’re applying for and how you’re capable of meeting them. Show that you’ve read the job description thoroughly and understand how the department you’d like to work in operates. Then write about how your education and current job have prepared you for what’s (hopefully) to come.

#4 If You Think It’s Appropriate, Add a Couple of Positive Changes You’d Implement If Hired

Specificity is what a lot of cover letters lack. So if you want to impress the recruiter or even your future supervisor, make yours as specific as possible. A good way to do so is to write a paragraph or two about what you’ll do in the new role if hired. For example, if you’re applying for a position of an onboarding specialist, here are a few things you might propose in the cover letter:

  1. Beginning the onboarding process in advance by sending study materials to the new hires.
  2. Pairing every new employee with an experienced mentor for at least two weeks.
  3. Organizing informal events to organically familiarize new employees with the company culture.
  4. Involving new employees in brainstorming from the first day to make them feel welcomed and valued.

#5 Don’t Think the Job Is Yours to Lose Just Because It’s an Internal Promotion

Finally, no matter how outstanding of a track record you have within the company, don’t think that you’re guaranteed the job just because they’re looking for an internal candidate. First, you never know—a colleague of yours might submit a much stronger job application. Second, your prospective boss might be looking for a specific person, and your work experience might not be as relevant as you think.

Remember that the quality of the job application, including the cover letter, matters a lot. If you feel like you lack the writing skills to compose a winning cover letter, it might be the right step to get professional help here top resume writing service. After all, your goal is to get employed. If you need to invest in your career a bit more to achieve it, do so.

An Afterword

A cover letter is possibly the most important part of the internal job application process. For it to get you the job, you must clearly state your commitment to the company, reasons for your interest in the new position, and original ideas you’re bringing to the table. So don’t just write a few paragraphs half-heartedly, hoping your resume is enough. Make an effort.

DBIC Ventures leads €1.6M seed investment in Clarity CX1 – 30 jobs created

DBIC Ventures today announces that it has led a €1.6M funding round in industry cloud CRM company, Clarity CX1. The investment will be used to fuel Clarity CX1’s global growth plans, supported by 30 new jobs over the next two years.

Established in February 2020, Dublin-based Clarity CX1 develops tailored CRM solutions built on the Salesforce Lightning platform. The solution was developed to fill a gap in the market for strategic sales and relationship management in sectors with notoriously complex and multi-layered customer engagement structures, including life sciences, manufacturing and financial services. It is tailored for each industry and allows users to rank and manage opportunities strategically, providing the user with a detailed understanding of where to focus their efforts.

The investment will be used to support Clarity CX1’s go-to-market strategy, which includes international expansion. The company is targeting large multinationals operating in the US, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the UK and is currently implementing CX1 with Stemline Therapeutics, a subsidiary of Menarini Group based in Italy. Clarity CX1 estimates that the addressable market for its services is approximately $11BN per year and it expects to reach revenues of €1M by year-end 2022. This growth, along with the investment, will support the creation of an additional 30 jobs – bringing Clarity CX1’s total headcount to more than 40, with the majority being based in Dublin.

DBIC Ventures led the seed round, investing via its latest fund. Launched in 2019, the fund is highly active and is investing in up to 30 highly scalable, export-focused Irish software and MedTech companies up to year-end 2024. The fund is backed by leading Irish technology entrepreneurs and business leaders, as well as Enterprise Ireland. Also contributing to the funding round were business angel investors from Halo Business Angel Network (HBAN); Enterprise Ireland; Tribal.vc; and Spark Crowdfunding.

Clarity CX1 is a spinout company of Clarity Engagement Solutions, which since 2009 has been providing strategy consulting and virtual training solutions to 8 of the world’s top 20 pharma companies.

Chris Deren, CEO and founder, Clarity CX1, said: “Industries like pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and financial services have large voids in their CRM systems because of their extremely complex B2B  sales cycles. Sales teams are engaging with multiple stakeholders of varying seniority in multiple departments: it is not only a headache, but it delays revenues. We are providing users with the insights to make the best use of their time and therefore shorten the sales cycle and pursue more qualified opportunities.

“We are delighted to have the backing of DBIC Ventures as we go to market. They have not only provided us with capital, but also the experience, knowledge and network of contacts that are so important at this early stage. With this support – along with the financing – we will be able to scale globally at pace.”

Colm O’Sullivan, Partner, DBIC Ventures, said: “This significant investment underlines the founder’s impressive track record and the clear global market need for Clarity CX1. The company is pursuing an aggressive growth strategy and targeting some of the world’s most profitable industries.

“DBIC Ventures invests in, and partners with, highly ambitious start-up teams to support their growth plans. I am excited to be joining the company’s board and working with the Clarity CX1 team as the company scales rapidly.
