New €19.6 million project led by Irish company is set to transform wave energy industry

A €19.6 million partnership project aiming to be the stepping stone towards large scale wave energy commercialisation, will be launched this week at the International Conference on Ocean Energy in San Sebastian, Spain.

WEDUSEA is a pioneering collaboration between 14 partners, spanning industry and academia from across Ireland, the UK, France, Germany and Spain. It is co-ordinated by the Irish company OceanEnergy.

The project is co-funded by the EU Horizon Europe Programme and Innovate UK.

Five of the partners in WEDUSEA are based in Ireland. These are:

  • OceanEnergy (Cork) which is co-ordinating the project
  • University College Cork
  • Gavin and Doherty Geosolutions (Cork)
  • Exceedence Ltd (Cork)
  • Wood (Galway)

OceanEnergy has developed the OE35, which is the world’s largest capacity floating wave energy device. Floating on the ocean’s surface, the device incorporates a trapped air volume, with the lower part open to the sea. Wave pressures at the submerged opening cause the water to oscillate and drive the trapped air through a turbine to generate electricity. This energy can be exported to the grid or used in other offshore applications.

The WEDUSEA project will demonstrate a grid connected 1MW OE35 floating wave energy converter at the European Marine Energy Centre Test Site in Orkney, Scotland.

Prof Tony Lewis, Chief Technical Officer at OceanEnergy, explains: “This rigorous technical and environmental demonstration will happen over a two-year period in Atlantic wave conditions. We believe this will be transformational for the wave energy industry, with outcomes directly impacting policy, technical standards, public perception and investor confidence. Wave energy is the world’s most valuable and persistent renewable resource. However, it has yet to be fully realised.  The project will demonstrate that  wave technology is on a cost reduction trajectory and will thus be a stepping stone to larger commercial array scale up and further industrialisation. We predict that the natural energy of the world’s oceans will one day supply much of the grid.”

Dr Michael O’Shea, Research Fellow at University College Cork, says: “WEDUSEA will demonstrate that a 1MW Irish-owned floating offshore renewable energy technology, the OE35, can produce clean power in a harsh Atlantic environment. This project builds on decades of Research & Development to which University College Cork has contributed. In particular, it draws on the findings of the Components for Ocean Renewable Energy Systems (CORES) project, funded by the EU under the 7th Framework Programme, wherein a 1/4 scale OE device was installed in Galway Bay. The learnings generated from WEDUSEA will pave the way for the next step in floating offshore renewables, for example the development of offshore arrays in locations such as the resource rich west coast of Ireland.”

Matthijs Soede from the European Commission says:  “We are expecting WEDUSEA to take wave energy beyond the state of the art by the collaboration of partners with a multi-disciplinary background and that it will contribute to the deployment of arrays of reliable wave energy devices to achieve the 1GW target for 2030 as presented in our Offshore Renewable Energy Strategy. The current energy crisis shows that the use of multiple energy sources is important to improve the security of supply and a breakthrough in ocean energy would be welcome.”

Myles Heward, Project Manager at the European Marine Energy Centre, says: “The innovative actions taken in this programme aim to improve the efficiency, reliability, scalability and sustainability of wave energy technology, and reduce the Levelised Cost of Electricity of the technology by over 30%. This will help to de-risk investments in wave energy.”

The four year WEDUSEA project has three phases. The first phase is the initial design of a device suited to European Marine Energy test site’s ocean conditions . This will be followed by the demonstration at the site, lasting two years. The final phase will be commercialisation and dissemination which sees the capitalisation and exploitation of the results. OceanEnergy and other consortium companies will actively exploit the results through new innovations, products and services. The results will also be disseminated to feed both environmental databases and IEC electrotechnical standards.

Rémi Gruet, CEO of  the trade association Ocean Energy Europe, adds: “Wave energy is at full-scale stage now and projects like WEDUSEA are paving the way for pilot farms and sector-wide industrialisation. As an EU-UK collaboration project, it will demonstrate the potential for wave energy to make a significant contribution to the EU Green Deal target. Wave energy will help smooth production peaks or dips from variable wind and ensure European energy independence.”

Auctioneera signs-up with NoFrixion to ensure low-cost and seamless payments

Auctioneera, Ireland’s largest and fastest growing fixed fee estate agency today announced it has initiated an agreement with NoFrixion for the provision of digital payments infrastructure for real time payments reconciliation and accounting updates, while enabling instant payments and settlement to and from customers. As the result of its partnership with NoFrixion, Auctioneera is cutting its payments processing charges by 87%, while also considerably reducing its manual processing needs.

There has been enormous innovation at the consumer end of payments in recent years but almost none in business payments. Now NoFrixion is delivering efficiencies and savings to Auctioneera and core to the service is NoFrixion’s MoneyMoov API, which bridges legacy and digital infrastructure while simplifying payments automation, making the use of internet banking redundant.

Eddie O’Driscoll, Director, Auctioneera, said: “We have taken the plunge and have migrated our company’s payment processing to NoFrixion, and we could not be happier with how it has gone. While the payment processing fee savings got our attention, NoFrixion’s technology has proven to be the main advantage. It is integrated with our accounting system, saving us substantial hours every month of labour-intensive data entry work. Partnering with an innovative payment partner at rates substantially less than our previous service-provider has expanded our margins and has helped us to streamline our operations to a level not previously possible. It is of huge benefit to us.”

Feargal Brady, co-founder and CEO of NoFrixion, said: “Auctioneera is a perfect NoFrixion customer, in that it is a disruptive high growth business, enabled by internet technologies that did not exist ten years ago. Both the business and its customers rely on instant, low-cost payments, with immediate notification and settlement which traditional banking services don’t provide. We are delighted to align with Auctioneera and look forward to playing a role in its future success.”

With Covid now in the rear-view mirror, Auctioneera is actively recruiting estate agents in Dublin and Cork to add to its existing team to fuel expansion as the market normalises after the pandemic shock. The company believes that its low fixed fee model is the future of estate agency. It will ultimately see property sellers start to realise that they can sell their property for the best possible price while paying a low fixed fee. As vendors become aware of this alternative, they are eschewing the notion of paying several thousand Euro to sell a property.

NoFrixion is currently adding five to ten customers each month and has seen keen interest from e-commerce and SaaS businesses looking to cut payments processing fees and automate reconciliation. The Auctioneera model is a good example of the potential for both cost-savings and automation.

To date, Auctioneera which was established in 2018 has sold almost €350 million worth of property saving its vendors an estimated €4.4 million in fees compared to traditional estate agencies rates, where circa 1.5% of the value of the property is charged to customers. Its average client saves over €4000 in estate agent fees.

Established in 2021, NoFrixion is a fast-growing digital payments provider headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, which specialises in Banking as a Service solutions for business. It currently employs seventeen people at its headquarters in Dublin and expects to grow its headcount to thirty people by next year. NoFrixion’s current customer base spans Ireland, the UK, Belgium and Portugal. It recently announced a €3.6M funding round led by Delta Partners and Middlegame Ventures and joined by Furthr VC.

On Air Announces a trio of stunning, boundary breaking performances by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

On Air today announces the forthcoming release of a trio of performances by the world-renowned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.  Conducted by Peter Breiner, all three performances feature compositions by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), the revolutionary composer responsible for one of the most vital and far-reaching movements of the last 100 years: Neo-Classicism.

Recorded in stunning 4K UHD Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos technologies, the three pieces performed are The Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite Of Spring.

The Firebird’ will be available to stream from 17th November, Petrushka from 8th December, and The Rite Of Spring from 22nd December.   All three shows will be available to watch On Demand after release.

Jakub Krampl, CEO, On Air comments: “We are very excited to present three outstanding Stravinsky pieces with the RPO and Peter Breiner. Like with every new show, we up the ante and this time it is no different. Classical shows are visually dull, with a front camera, and a couple of angles, not reflective of the dynamics of the music itself. We take a different approach and the end product is exciting both visually and acoustically. Will some purists hate it? Maybe, but we aim to bring a younger audience to our shows that will appreciate the modern twist.”

Managing Director of the RPO, Ian Maclay adds: “Working with On Air was a fantastic chance for us to continue on our journey to make orchestral music accessible for all, placing it at the heart of contemporary society.”

About the shows

The Firebird – a ballet and orchestral concert work first performed at the Opéra de Paris on 25 June 1910, The Firebird catapulted Stravinsky to international fame. Although designed as a work for the stage, with specific passages accompanying characters and action, the music has achieved equal, if not greater recognition, as a concert piece.

Petrushka – Stravinsky’s second complete score for the Ballets Russes which followed the success of The Firebird, and premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris in 1911.  His initial idea was for a concert piece for piano representing ‘a puppet suddenly endowed with life, exasperating the patience of the orchestra with diabolical cascades of arpeggios’.

The Rite of Spring a ballet and orchestral concert work first performed at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on 29 May 1913.  Containing many novel features for its time, including experiments in tonality, metre, rhythm, stress and dissonance, the music achieved equal if not greater recognition as a concert piece and is widely considered to be one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century, and is one of the most recorded works in the classical repertoire.

These classical performances follow on from On Air’s inaugural classical music event in December 2020 – a livestream of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony – and three-part classical series from 2021 which featured the final, sublime symphonies of Brahms, Dvořák and Mozart.

Conductor Peter Breiner concludes:One can hardly think of a better way to start an endeavour in classical music than these three Stravinsky’s major works that form a foundation of every orchestra’s repertoire. Collaboration of the brilliant RPO and top of the line producers resulted in a recording that is visually and aurally quite extraordinary.”

Akara robot enabling more medical procedures in UK trial

An Irish robot that decontaminates air is being trialled in a major NHS hospital in Cornwall, UK – with early results suggesting it could reduce room downtime in critical parts of the hospital by more than 60%.

The robot, made by Akara who are based at The Digital Hub, has been on the ground at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RCHT) since June 2022 where it has been used in parts of the hospital where the air has a higher chance of contamination.

The idea was born out of COVID-19 pressures, where thorough cleaning of air was paramount to avoid infection spread. The robot is designed to eliminate COVID-19 as well as other viruses, including flu.

Dr Conor McGinn, co-founder and CEO of Akara explained the project’s potential: “We need technology to disinfect the air because it’s simply not a job that people can do. While ventilation helps, the cost and time needed to upgrade rooms to the levels needed is rarely practical. Our disinfection robots are mobile, allowing them to be rapidly deployed in minutes to the regions that need it most while their sensors and AI enable them to dynamically respond to the environment in ways that aren’t possible with static purification units.”

Already being utilised by staff, the robot is being trialled in the endoscopy department and is showing promising results in its ability to disinfect the air. Following certain medical Following certain medical examinations where aerosol generating procedures are performed, rooms needed to be left vacant for periods of more than 25 minutes in order to allow the air in the room to be replenished by clean air from the ventilation system. With the Akara robot, the process of air replenishment can be greatly accelerated, cutting the downtime to just 10 minutes. These findings will be presented at the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) Conference in Bournemouth on Oct. 17-19.

Joanne Taylor, Consultant Nurse and Deputy Director of Infection Prevention and Control at RCHT, commented: “The robot has definitely improved things for patients as the reduced downtime means we can get more patients seen in a day, while maintaining the highest standards in environmental cleanliness. Based on time savings made during the trial period, we estimate that its use could enable as many as 2,400 additional procedures a year which would have a very significant effect on reducing the waiting lists.”

Lynsey Farrell, Endoscopy Unit Lead at RCHT, said: “The robot has had a really positive impact on the department. Staff are concerned about the increased risk of COVID-19 for patients due to aerosol-generating procedures, and also for themselves, so they’re very keen to work with new technologies offering the potential to make the environment safer for everyone.”

The trial has been carried out in collaboration with the University of Plymouth and DIH Hero, a European innovation hub with a goal to accelerate innovation in robotics for healthcare European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 825003.
