Thermo Fisher Scientific marks ten-year anniversary of on-site wind turbine

Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, has today celebrated the ten-year anniversary of its on-site wind turbine in Currabinny, Cork. Providing 19% of the site’s electricity in 2023, the turbine has generated over 75,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity, the equivalent of powering approximately 17,000 homes for a year1, and led to the avoidance of over 44,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) for the grid.

Standing at 100m tall with 50m blades, at the time, the Enercon 3MW wind turbine was the highest wind turbine tower in Ireland to date, taking almost 30,000 hours to construct. This project was supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland. The turbine achieved full financial payback within six years, highlighting the project’s economic viability alongside its environmental benefits.

Commenting on the anniversary at a dedicated on-site event, Edel Collins, General Manager at Thermo Fisher Cork, said: “This is a major milestone for the Cork site. When the turbine was first switched on ten years ago, it ignited our sustainability journey in earnest. Since then, our award-winning Energy Management Team has grown and has delivered further energy reductions of over 10,000 MWhs since 2022.

“From its detailed construction process to its commissioning in 2014, this turbine exemplifies sustainable energy projects with tangible outcomes that are delivered through vision and collaboration. At Thermo Fisher, our Mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. Thermo Fisher has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions across our entire value chain by 2050, and a 50.4% reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions by the year 2030. I look forward to what the next ten years will bring on our journey to a more sustainable future.”

Michael Lohan, CEO at IDA Ireland said: “Sustainable projects like the Enercon 3MW wind turbine at Thermo Fisher’s Cork site are very much aligned to IDA Ireland’s renewable energy goals and sustainable economic growth. By integrating renewable energy generation into their operations, organisations like Thermo Fisher are not only reducing their carbon footprint but also setting a strong example for the industry.”

The wind turbine is part of a long-term and enduring commitment to sustainability. The site has been ISO50001 Energy Management System certified since 2012 and over the past decade has delivered substantial energy efficiency and decarbonisation projects. These projects include upgrades to the Heating Ventilation and Air Condition systems, thermal system upgrades, and replacing a waste heat boiler. This is in addition to long term commitment to the protecting and enhancing the local environment, a commitment that began in 1978 with the development of a bird shelter.

As a Mission-driven company, Thermo Fisher understands that our obligation – and our opportunity – goes beyond enabling our customers’ success and extends to making the world a better place by supporting our communities, being a good steward of our planet and creating a great work environment for our colleagues.  To learn more about how our work supports our efforts to make a positive impact on society visit: www.thermofisher.com/CSR

Revolut Report: May marked start of summer of sport as consumer spending rose

Revolut, the global financial app with more than 40 million customers worldwide, and now over 2.8 million in Ireland, has crunched the numbers on Irish consumer spending over the last month, with the app’s own data revealing that fair weather and an upcoming summer of sport saw a spike in consumer spending across the country.

With the GAA All-Ireland Championship, Irish Rugby’s tour of South Africa, The Open Golf Championship, and the Paris 2024 Olympics all now coming into view, Revolut’s consumer spending analysis tracked nearly 55m card payments in May, indicating real-world spending trends by Ireland’s Revolut account holders, who made close to €1.25bn in card payments across the month — a rise of 7.95% (MoM increase) with figures adjusted for user growth.

The May sunshine sparked a significant increase in consumer spending on sports clubs, which jumped by close to 22% (MoM increase), a rise of more than 70% (YoY increase) when compared with the same period last year. Similarly, parents are paying out more this year for sports and recreation camps for their children compared to last, rising by 7.5% (YoY increase).

Sports apparel and sporting goods stores were the beneficiaries, with spending up more than 13% and 12% respectively (MoM increases). Meanwhile, consumers in Ireland were hitting the gym more often in May, with outlays on health and gym memberships rising by close to 20% (MoM increase) and over 23% (YoY increase).

May’s fair weather also saw Revolut customers flock back to the golf club, with expenditure on courses rising over 20% (MoM increase), likely inspired by The Masters in April and the upcoming Open Championship later this summer.

Maurice Murphy, General Manager at Revolut Bank UAB – Ireland Branch, said: “With now more than 2.8m customers across Ireland, we are able to draw genuine consumer spending insights from a data pool that represents over half the country. It’s therefore great to see a noteworthy rise in both general and sports-related expenditure, with our customers clearly inspired by the summer that’s ahead of us. Revolut supports customers with their health and fitness, with up to 20 credits for ClassPass and a digital personal trainer through Freeletics available via certain paid plans, providing greater access to gyms and fitness studios.”

Revolut was recently recognised by financial comparison site Bonkers.ie as ‘Ireland’s Best Consumer Business’ and ‘provider of the Best Current Account’, whilst it ranked 9th as part of the Ireland RepTrak® 2024 study earlier this year.

Jabra Unveils Second Generation of Elite 8 Active and Elite 10, Taking Sound and Streaming to the Next Level

Jabra, a global leader in true wireless sound and hybrid work solutions, is unveiling the Jabra Elite 8 Active Gen 2 and Jabra Elite 10 Gen 2 earbuds. Building upon the same great design and success of their predecessors, these next-generation earbuds come with enhancements that strengthen the audio experience.

This includes the world’s first LE Audio smart case, enhanced spatial sound powered by Dolby Audio for a better music experience, and enhanced Natural HearThrough for better awareness when outdoors. Jabra’s Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) has also been made even stronger with improved mid- and low-frequency noise cancellation.

Streaming anywhere

Jabra has looked beyond the earbuds themselves with this next generation by engineering the world’s first LE Audio smart case. With an innovative design featuring dual USB-C and 3.5mm jack compatibility, the Elite 8 Active and Elite 10 Gen 2 prioritise universal streaming and connectivity at the press of a button.

Integrated seamlessly into the case, the built-in chip enables users to effortlessly connect and stream audio from a variety of devices directly to their earbuds. With lower latency than standard Bluetooth connections from case to buds, users can experience better audio and video sync, alongside Hi-Fi sound quality, courtesy of the LC3 codec. The 2-in-1 cable transforms the smart charging case into a versatile adaptor that can be plugged into any device. Whether on a flight, treadmill or at home watching TV, users can simply plug in the case to enjoy spatial sound streaming directly to their earbuds.

New dimension of audio experience

These earbuds offer a new dimension to the audio experience, with improved spatial sound tuning and Dolby Atmos support, as well as new spatial sound benefits across a wider range of content, including podcasts. In blind tests, 95% of respondents preferred the spatial sound tuning delivered with Gen 2**.

Jabra’s next-generation earbuds also offer an improved call performance with 6-microphone call technology and enhanced AI call algorithms. The microphones distinguish which sounds are background noise and prioritise the spoken voice. Effective noise-reduction algorithms are automatically switched on to provide a clear call performance depending on activity or location to ensure high speech clarity.

Jabra has also improved the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), which can block up to twice as much noise as previous generations. The noise reduction performance of the internal feedback microphone has been increased to provide a better ANC effect for noises in the mid- and low-frequency range.

Furthermore, the Adaptive ANC algorithms have been enhanced to maximise the adaptive effect for more users. The result is stronger noise cancellation in multiple scenarios, including aircraft and gym background noise.

The next generation earbuds also provide increased situational (or outdoor) awareness with new Natural HearThrough which is optimised for wind noise reduction and is twice as effective as the previous generation. Thanks to smart algorithms that increase the frequency range of HearThrough, the surrounding ambient sounds now appear clearer and more natural, while wind noise and whistling are noticeably reduced.

Ehtisham Rabbani, Chief Executive of the Gaming & Consumer Division at Jabra said, “With these next generation buds we’ve stepped up those features which we know matter most – improved noise-cancelling and enhanced situational awareness – whilst for the first time bringing innovative LE Audio streaming functionality to the charging case, making it possible to connect to just about anything, anywhere.”

Tech Review – SOUNDPEATS Q35 HD+ Neckband Headphones

The SOUNDPEATS Q35 HD+ Neckband Headphones are for those into sports however  anyone can wear the latest from the company and are powered by 10mm drivers which is decent for their size, these are not your typical earbuds but one that wrap around your neck but over time you do not notice they are there.

The build quality is quite good and the fit better than expected being in ears as the wing that is built in does a good job giving them a secure seal which also helps with sound isolation.

There is no app here this time which is unfortunate but maybe added later with some luck to give you the full suite of EQ setting those are custom to with those others might be used to having from the brand which we have tested many of recently.

There is a simple to use inline control with three raised buttons on board to get the tasks done, this is on the right side of the headset and does not feel uncomfortable when wearing there is also a charge post on the control unit so as mentioned all lept simple here.

The also come with Bluetooth 5.2 technology and support for aptX-HD decoding which gives you great sound on the go be it in the gym jogging or running even at home they sound great and calls have been no issue either being very clear both ends. they also use the QCC3040 chipset from Qualcomm

How do these sound though? These for me are on the brighter side due to having no app access however you can try third party EQ apps if you like the sound is loud crisp and clear with a slight tinny sound when maxed out on some songs tested from my usual test loop of tracks .

Highs lows and mids came out fine and on testing on all genres they overall do a great job being sports orientated earphones and when maxed out the noise cancelling is decent given there is no ANC profile here.

There are ample controls here with the ability to access your voice assistant skip and reverse tracks manage calls and control volume. I did find at times the skip and reverse tracks function a bit dodgy but over time will see how it goes but having big fingers could be part of the problem there.

Overall these do a decent job can be taken anywhere being IPX5 rated and have a solid battery life

Republic of Ireland’s First Ever Dedicated Bio-CNG Refuelling Self-Service Station Opens Today

There’s good news for businesses today who are looking to make the transition to more sustainable, cleaner fuel for their heavy goods vehicles. Flogas, part of DCC plc, is today announcing the official opening of the Republic of Ireland’s first ever dedicated Bio-CNG refuelling self-service station.

Flogas, a commercial and industrial energy supplier and supplier of renewable biomethane to transport in Ireland, said this new self-service station will support large companies who want to make the switch to Bio-CNG and reduce their Scope 3 emissions.

Located at FoodCentral in St Margarets North Co. Dublin, this 2,900 square metre site can refuel up to 50 HGVs per day from one dual sided high-speed dispenser. When the station is at full utilisation, it will cut over 9,000 tonnes of C02 emissions per annum compared to diesel fuelled HGVs.

The news comes after the Government recently published its new National Biomethane Strategy to support the delivery of up to 5.7 Tera Wat Hour (TWh) of indigenously produced biomethane by 2030. Bio-CNG will support the decarbonisation of Ireland’s road haulage sector, responsible for 20.7% of the total road transport emissions in Ireland.

The renewable fuel for the station will come from Irish and European anaerobic digestion (AD) plants. Flogas is the only energy supplier in Ireland approved under the Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme for the supply of Bio-CNG. The Renewable Gas Certification scheme ensures transparency and accountability, as the biomethane will be meticulously tracked in the supply chain.  This dedicated Bio-CNG station is another renewable market first for Flogas having already been the first energy supplier in Ireland to supply biomethane through the gas network to Diageo in 2020.

Speaking at the official opening, Minister of State at the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications Ossian Smyth TD, said: “Renewable fuels are an important transition measure for transport decarbonisation until we realise the shift to zero emission solutions. The supply of biomethane for transport is incentivised under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation Scheme and the recently published Biomethane Strategy recognises that biomethane can be used as an alternative in heavy goods transport. Flogas’s Bio-CNG refuelling station can play a role in supporting businesses who choose to reduce their carbon emissions using Bio-CNG.”

As we stand at the forefront of Ireland’s sustainable energy revolution, Flogas is proud to unveil the Republic of Ireland’s first ever dedicated Bio-CNG refuelling self-service station,” said John Rooney, Managing Director at Flogas. “Bio-CNG represents not just a fuel, but a promise—a promise of a greener, more efficient future for commercial transportationBio-CNG for heavy goods vehicles can cut carbon emissions by up to 90% and can reduce the lifetime vehicle costs compared to diesel vehicles, which is in line with DCC’s strategy – Cleaner Energy in Your Power. We would encourage any business thinking of making the switch to Bio-CNG to get in touch with our dedicated team of energy experts at Flogas,” he added.

Operated by Certa, a sister company to Flogas, this self-service station will offer convenient access to Bio-CNG 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will support companies with existing Bio-CNG HGV fleets and those looking to make the switch.

Flogas already supplies renewable biomethane to four Circle K refuelling pumps across Ireland. As experts in gas distribution, Flogas saw an opportunity to provide a well to wheel solution for the transport sector.

This is a new business division and Flogas plans to roll out more Bio-CNG stations with its industrial and commercial customers in the future, to support them with their Scope 3 emissions reduction plans.

The new Flogas Bio-CNG refuelling self-service station is supported by Gas Networks Ireland’s Causeway project, which has to date delivered a network of high capacity fast-fill CNG stations nationwide, developed a renewable gas injection facility, deployed a fleet of CNG vehicles and made a CNG vehicle fund available to businesses in Ireland.

Demand showing strong growth

Gas Networks Ireland’s latest gas demand report shows that demand for renewable gas in transport from Ireland’s road freight sector is continuing to show strong growth – in May 2024, demand for this low carbon alternative to diesel saw another significant year-on-year increase, up 28% on the same month last year.

Gas Networks Ireland’s Head of Business Development, Karen Doyle said:

“We are delighted to support Flogas in the opening of the Republic of Ireland’s first dedicated Bio-CNG refuelling station, part of our Causeway Programme, which will play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions from the commercial transport sector. With three more public stations in development, we are delivering a network of stations offering a low carbon fuel alternative to diesel for Ireland’s commercial fleet.”

Salesforce Research: Improving technology use is Irish marketers’ No. 1 Priority

Salesforce, the global leader in CRM, has just released the new State of Marketing report, sharing insights from over 4,800 marketing leaders across 29 countries — including 100 from Ireland.

The report covers the latest trends on how marketers are evaluating and implementing AI into their operations; approaching data acquisition, maintenance, and application strategies; and ensuring customer trust and security as vulnerabilities increase.

Key insights from the research include:

  • Priorities for a new marketing era. Marketers are evolving their practices in a highly competitive landscape. They’re looking to AI — both generative and predictive — to help personalise at scale and boost efficiency.
    • Locally, improving our use of tools and technologies is Salesforce Ireland marketers’ No. 1 priority, while outdated tools and technologies/ creating a cohesive customer journey is their No. 1 challenge.
  • Marketers shore up their data foundations. Businesses have long struggled to connect disparate data points to create consistent, personalised experiences across customer journeys. Yet as third-party cookies are depreciated and AI proliferates, that quest is only becoming more critical — and challenging.
    • 23% of marketers in Ireland are fully satisfied with their ability to unify customer data sources.
    • 66% of marketers in Ireland have access to real-time data to execute a campaign. 67% need the IT department’s help to do so.
    • Marketers in Ireland use a median of 10 different tactics to collect data, with customer service data being the most common.

  • Marketers embrace AI with an eye on trust. Marketers are intent on successfully applying AI in their operations with the right data, but are concerned about security.
    • 75% of marketers in Ireland are already experimenting with or have fully implemented AI into their workflows.
    • AI implementation is also a point of differentiation: high performing marketing teams are 2.6x more likely than underperformers to have fully implemented AI within their operations.
    • The three most popular AI use cases among marketers in Ireland are: Automate data integration, generate content, and improve customer segmentation/lookalike audience modelling.

  • Full personalisation remains a work in progress. To meet rising customer expectations around personalisation, marketers are graduating beyond broad audience segmentations, like location or age, to more specific identifiers like individual preferences or past interactions. There’s also a difference between how the highest- and lowest-performing marketing teams adapt.
    • High performers in Ireland fully personalise across an average of 6 channels, compared with underperformers who fully personalised across 3.5.
  • Marketers seek unified analytics. There is no shortage of data sources, but putting that data to work is a challenge — especially when it demands a holistic or long-term view of data.
    • 58% of marketers in Ireland track customer lifetime value (CTV).
    • 90% of marketers in Ireland say they have a clear view into marketing’s impact on revenue.

  • Deeper relationships emerge with account-based marketing (ABM) and loyalty programs. Companies are increasingly turning to strategies like ABM and loyalty programs for better acquisition and retention. Yet many of these programs’ information sources remain disjointed, as does the customer experience.
    • Only 69% of marketers in Ireland say loyalty data is fully integrated across all touchpoints.
    • 45% of marketers in Ireland say loyalty program functionalities are accessible across all touchpoints.
    • 59% of B2B marketers in Ireland use ABM for customer acquisition with a similar number 56% using it for upselling however just 38% for cross selling.

Comments on the news:

“Marketers have been quick to embrace the new era of AI and are already seeing it revolutionise how they connect with their customers. They also recognise the challenge, as the potential benefits from AI hinge on managing data efficiently and safely, with maintaining customer trust never being more important.” — Gareth Kelly, Head of Marketing, Salesforce Ireland

Methodology

Salesforce conducted a double-anonymous survey of 4,850 marketers between February 5 to March 12, 2024. Respondents were sourced from 29 countries across North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East. Additional methodology and survey demographic details can be found in the report. Tech Review – Nokia 3210 (2024)

Being an avid high end smartphone user it is challenging at times when testing phones like this but the Nokia 3210 has more uses than one would think and now people are and can use technology to detox and that is what I have been doing and the Nokia 3210 is a start to help you detox which I think many of us need to do.

Now I went through in detail all the features on the device which you can see here and has been popular so if you need a rundown check out the video below while we talk about this phone can help you detox amongst other things.

First up is the design of the 3210 which many said on my social media it looks more like the 3310 but that is subjective and for me makes no odds the device is super light and think with tactile clicky keys that work well and will fit in any pocket.. It does feel cheap but it is robust and after having it a few weeks now it has not got marked or scuffed either which is a good sign although I am careful with my phones.

There is lots to do on the phone itself and you can use your own earbuds/headphones to listen to the tunes which you can load via your microsd card and the music sounds alright it would be my most use of the phone apart from calls and text which takes getting use to but you pick it up rather fast. Oh it has a radio so if you have no music or forgot to load some again sounds great.

Nokia 3210 (2024) with headphones plugged in for radio – techbuzzireland

There is a decent battery life on this too which is not something you see everyday today and it is removable again another thing you do not see and refreshing. There is plenty of games to test out too and some with limited goes and then you have to purchase you can certainly forget about battery anxiety with the Nokia 3210 that is for sure..

There is a camera and video recorder on board which will not win any prizes but look it takes alright photos I guess if you felt the  need to do so on your time away I guess and to be expected really it is not a phone for social media despite internet access which is not the best either and how it should be and keeping you away from pings all day long and just relaxing listening to the radio or your own music. I would advise daytime shots or bright areas though to get a decent image that people can see.

Overall this is not a phone out to set records by any stretch but more to detach your from the internet and social media it has plenty of battery and features on board to take away for a weekend like I did and feck eveyone else after that you can make phone calls and send text and being frankly honest I think we all need to step away from the internet and social media every now and then and this device can help like previous reboots from Nokia and HMD.

Biotech Company secures multi-million investment to revolutionize the Market for sustainable aroma with a groundbreaking new technology

EvodiaBio has raised an investment of 7 million euros from both foreign and Danish investment funds, including EIFO and The March Group. The new capital will be used for both commercialization and expansion.

It is a new groundbreaking and sustainable method to produce natural aroma that form the cornerstone of EvodiaBio’s technology. It can improve the taste of non-alcoholic beer while reducing the use of natural resources and CO2 emissions.

With extra capital backing, the company aims to become a global leader in sustainable aroma development for the food industry and beyond.

“We are incredibly proud to have achieved this milestone. This funding round is an important step towards our vision of revolutionizing the food industry with sustainable and innovative solutions. With support from our investors and our strong team, we are ready to take EvodiaBio to new heights and make a significant impact on the global stage,” says Camilla Fenneberg, CEO of EvodiaBio

Natural and sustainable aromas through Precision Fermentation

Hops are one of the key ingredients that give beer its great taste, but like many of nature’s other resources, the aromatic plant is threatened by climate change. Production is declining, and quality is deteriorating. EvodiaBio has developed a technology using yeast and precision fermentation to produce sustainable aromas that create the taste of hops.

These aromas are initially launched for the beer industry, where they can improve the taste of non-alcoholic beer and partially replace aromatic hops, which are currently threatened by climate change.

High interest from breweries

The company is experiencing high interest from breweries, and the possibilities extend beyond non-alcoholic products. With fresh capital, commercialization and expansion can be accelerated, and in the long term, EvodiaBio aims to improve the taste of various types of beverages and other food products.

Behind the ambitious Danish startup stands a strong board with prominent profiles such as Flemming Besenbacher, former Chairman of Carlsberg, Andreas Fibig, former CEO of IFF, and Anne Cabotin, former SVP at Symrise.

“I am pleased that we have now completed an oversubscribed up-round enabling us to continue our journey to make non-alcoholic beer taste great and reinvent the aroma industry by providing new sustainable solutions. A big thanks go out to our existing and new investors for their confidence in EvodiaBio and belief in our journey ahead.” says Chairman of the Board Jarne Elleholm.

EvodiaBio, founded just three years ago, is supported by a strong international syndicate of investors consisting of Nordic Foodtech VC, the German flavor house Symrise, PINC – the venture arm of Paulig, Thia Ventures VC, Newtree Impact, Ananke Ventures Limited, EIFO, and The March Group.

EvodiaBio received early-stage financial support of 2 million euros from the Danish BioInnovation Institute, founded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The state investment fund sees great potential in companies working towards green transition.

“We are pleased to support the continued development of the Danish biosolutions ecosystem, which stands strong internationally. It is crucial that we contribute with risk-tolerant capital so that advanced research from universities can be commercialized and support the green transition, which EvodiaBio can pave the way for. We see great potential in their innovative product, which the strong team behind the company can take far, and we are pleased with the support from international investors,” says Johan Bitsch Nielsen, Investment Manager, Green Transition, EIFO.
