The Irish Research Council and the Embassy of France in Ireland will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Ulysses scheme this evening (29.05.17) at a special event in the French Embassy.
The Ulysses scheme – named after James Joyce’s famous novel to celebrate the Joycean links between Ireland and France – is designed to support new research collaborations between Irish and French researchers. It also promotes the development of mutual research projects involving young Irish researchers visiting France and reciprocal visits by young French researchers to Ireland.

In advance of this evening’s celebration, the Irish Research Council has highlighted some of the research supported by the Ulysses scheme over the past 20 years, including:
In 2010, Laurent Philippot (INRA Dijon, the French National Institute for Agricultural Research) and Bryan Griffiths (Teagasc) obtained a Ulysses award for their work on the role nitrogen plays in the increase of the greenhouse effect. The Ulysses scheme was the first step towards a more extensive collaboration, including the funding of a post-doctoral position and the publication of an article in Nature Climate Change, within the compass of the European project EcoFinders.
Olivier Thomas (University of Nice, now NUI Galway) and Grace McCormack (NUI Galway) secured a Ulysses grant in 2015 for their project on marine biotechnology. This led to wider collaboration involving researchers in Brazil, France and Ireland, and Olivier Thomas is now an established professor in NUI Galway.
Commenting on the success of the Ulysses scheme, Peter Brown, Interim Director of the Irish Research Council, said:
“We are very proud to jointly celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Ulysses programme. Promoting international partnership is an important part of the Council’s mission and indeed is key to the development of Ireland’s research system as a whole. Mobility and international collaboration between the Irish and French research systems fuels new knowledge, skills and experience which, taken together, have a hugely positive impact on the participationg researchers.
“We are delighted to see that Ulysses’ laureates have used their experience to further their careers and establish themselves in academia.”
French Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Jean-Pierre Thébault commented on the importance of the Ulysses scheme. “Each year, this programme attracts excellent researchers on relevant topics, from fundamental research in astronomy and mathematics to very applied research on subsects such as marine energies and health.
“Its success demonstrates the quality of the Franco-Irish collaboration in research.”

Dr. Eucharia Meehan has been appointed as Registrar and CEO of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), the internationally-renowned institute for world-leading basic research and scholarship.
Dr. Meehan previously held the position of Director of the Irish Research Council, having been appointed as the inaugural leader of the organisation when it was established in 2012.
Commenting on her new role with DIAS, Dr. Meehan said: “It is a privilege to take up this appointment in an institution with such a strong international reputation for excellent work in the pursuit of new knowledge. Reflecting its roots and rich legacy, DIAS connects Ireland to international and indeed global research networks. From its inception to the present day, DIAS is a magnet for current and emerging research leaders in each of its specialised branches of knowledge.”

In addition to starting her new role at DIAS, Dr. Meehan was admitted as a member of the Royal Irish Academy in recent days. She is among 18 individuals to achieve the distinction of being admitted as a member in 2017. Membership is attained by election and is considered the highest academic honour on the island of Ireland.

Dr. Meehan received this honour on foot of more than 20 years of leadership across a range of public and private research-based organisations. Prior to her role with the Irish Research Council, she was Head of Research and Innovation at the Higher Education Authority, and directed the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI), which invested €1.2bn over a decade to create the strategic research infrastructure that became the bedrock for Irish research, particularly in the higher education sector.

There is an assumption in today’s society that your attractiveness and sex life is at a peak in your twenties, yet for women, when it comes to having the best orgasm, feeling most attractive and having the most enjoyable sex, it gets better with age: 36-years-old and above to be precise, according to a new study byNatural Cycles, the world’s first, and only, app to be certified as a contraception which is used by over 250,000 women in 161 countries.
Over 2,618 women were surveyed using the standardised McCoy Female Sexuality Questionnaire (MFSQ) methodology, which measures female sexuality on a range of categories including Satisfaction (frequency of intercourse, satisfaction of partner), Attraction (self-perceived and in the eyes of the partner) and Orgasm (frequency and enjoyment). The survey unveiled interesting patterns of sexual behaviour among three distinct age groups: younger (below 23), middle (23-36) and older (36 and over) – and the results showed that orgasm, attractiveness and most enjoyable sex gets better with age and peaks at the age of 36-years and above.

When questioned about sexual attractiveness, the older age group were the most confident in their skin. 8 out of 10 women 36-years and older said they felt attractive whereas only 4 out of 10 women 23-36-years old felt attractive and 7 out of 10 women aged 23-years and under felt attractive.
Whilst the younger age group felt sexy and attractive, they scored the lowest when quizzed about how often they orgasm. The majority of women in the older age group (nearly six out of 10 older women) reported having more and better orgasms, compared to 5.4 out of ten in the middle group and 5 out of ten of younger women.
Women in the older age group are also having the most enjoyable sex with 86 per cent of them saying they had enjoyable intercourse over the last four weeks compared with 76 per cent in the middle age group and 56 per cent in the youngest women surveyed.
When it comes to the ideal length of time sex should last, the reality does not always match expectation. In fact, 31 per cent of women surveyed felt sex should last longer than what they currently have whilst 12 per cent felt that sex should be shorter than they currently have.
When questioned about the frequency of sex women have, just under a third had sex twice per week, over one fifth had sex three times per week, and under one-fifth had sex once per week.
And the majority of women felt that monogamy was key to a happier sex life. In the survey, 81 per cent of women said they can have a great long lasting sex life with the same person.
Amanda Bonnier, Brand Manager at Natural Cycles, said: “The results of the survey send out a really positive message about something us women have known and expected for some time; as you get older and get to know your body better, you can have a more enjoyable sex life and feel confident about yourself, particularly if you’re in a monogamous relationship. It’s encouraging that there doesn’t appear to be a stigma attached to being older and enjoying the best sex of your life.”

The idea was launched by the three founders of the young technology company KirMaq.Tech (https://kirmaq.tech/), composed of Jacob Martin, a native of Amos and Nassim Kirouac, a native of Greenfield Park but who grew up in Val-d’Or. The duo is completed by a friend, Vipul Srivastav.
Camp/y, the 1st smart & connected prevention device for camping, comes in the form of a small owl. Featuring a location system, it comes in direct connection to your cell phone from anywhere in the world, thanks to a mobile application, and can alert you on a multitude of things, starting with advising you to store your stuff as soon as it starts raining. Camp/y has an integrated alarm, indicates air quality, can even serve as a flashlight and much more. It is powered by a 5 volt solar cell and measures 4 centimeters in thickness, 8 in height and 4 in width.
The device has already been presented publicly on a few occasions.
