Five Methods to Fix Frozen MacBook when Booting Up

Introduction

MacBook laptops sometimes run into the issue of not booting up for some reason. It could be because of corrupted startup file, incompatible operating systems with the MacBook model, bad startup disk, and so on. When these issues exist, it becomes harder to start up the MacBook normally.

This article provides five simple methods to fix frozen MacBook that is not booting up. It explains these step processes and applicable solutions to scenarios when the Mac is not booting up.

Methods of Fixing MacBook That Is Not Booting Up

Below are the top five recommendations to get your MacBook up and running once again. They are:

  1. Safe Mode Boot

Booting in Safe Mode limits the number of checks and processes that Mac focuses on while trying to boot. It is very useful for performing certain diagnostics to discover the real issue with the laptop not booting.

To proceed with safe mode, first force shut down the Mac. Next, press and hold down the shift key immediately after restarting the Mac. To get some feedback on the actions you are taking while trying to boot in safe mode, press and hold the ‘Shift + Command + V’ key combination when you restart the Mac. This will boot into safe mode alongside verbose mode.

You should see safe mode written on the top right corner if you are successful. The safe mode interface also looks a bit different with blocks of color in comparison with the usual transparency. Once you are in safe mode, try uninstalling recent software or undoing recent settings changes.

  1. PRAM/NVRAM reset

Parameter Random Access Memory is a special memory section that stores data in the Mac for shutting down, volume settings, and screen resolution. Resetting PRAM helps to reset the parameters to the default value and helps to end any process disrupting proper boot-up.

To reset PRAM/NVRAM, first shut down your Mac. Click and hold down the ‘Command + Option (alt) + P + R’ key combination immediately after restarting. Keep holding down these keys for at least 5 seconds before releasing the keys. This should reset your Mac and allow it to restart normally. In other cases, you boot to the progress bar and your Mac starts up after some minutes.

  1. System Management Controller (SMC) Reset

The SMC is responsible for low-level hardware functions like power button action, battery management, LED, and so on. Resetting the SMC will return the power management settings to default and help to fix the boot failure.

To begin the reset process, make sure the Mac is shut down by long pressing the power button. After about 15 to 20 seconds, hold down the ‘Shift + Control + Option’ key combinations and press the power button for about 10 seconds. Release the button and restart the Mac to see the result.

  1. Disk Utility option in Recovery mode

A corrupt drive might prove to be incompatible with the startup process because of some corrupt files. Using the recovery mode, a fix for the drive can happen with the ‘First Aid’ feature in the Disk Utility option. The first step is to get the laptop to boot in recovery mode. To do this, first force shut down the laptop. Then proceed to click the ‘Command + Option + R’ key combination immediately after restarting.

When the screen shows the ‘macOS utilities’ menu, your Mac is in recovery mode. Proceed to navigate to the Disk Utility option. From the Disk Utility, select the startup drive and apply for the ‘First Aid’ program on the drive. If there are errors with the startup disk, the Disk Utility will help fix them.

  1. File system check

In a scenario where the file system is the reason why MacBook is not booting up, running a check and slightly modifying it will help fix the issue. Although this step is a bit technical, it is easy and quite straightforward. To begin this process, first shut down your Mac. Restart with and press the ‘Command + S’ key combination. This launches the Mac in single-user mode. You should release the keypress only when a black screen and white text appears on the screen.

Next, enter the ‘fsck –fy’ command in the command line prompt and click the return key. Wait while the file system modification is ongoing. After the checks are over, you should see either one of the two messages: ‘The volume (Mac name) appear to be OK’ or ‘FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED’.

Proceed to type reboot and press enter to restart your MacBook.

Data Recovery with iBoysoft

One thing you worry about the frozen MacBook is the data within. There is one effective solution from iBoysoft Data Recovery for Mac to recover data from a dead MacBook. iBoysoft offers an effective and efficient data recovery software that helps to recover important data from your laptop. It offers the option to recover your files from the laptop that might have some fault.

In three easy steps, you can recover your files. First, download and install the iBoysoft tool free from the internet. The second step is to launch and perform a quick or deep scan of the disk you select. Thirdly, preview and recover the files you choose to recover. You are suggested to store these files on an external hard drive instead of saving them in the original location.

Fortunately, when your MacBook refuses to boot up, iBoysoft data recovery can help you recover your data. Through the terminal, you can launch the iBoysoft tool and save your data to an external device. From the recovery mode, select terminal on the ‘macOS utilities’ screen.

In the terminal command window, enter the following command: ‘sh <(curl http://boot.iboysoft.com/boot.sh) command to launch the iBoysoft data recovery. From the software interface, select the disk you wish to scan and perform the scanning process. Select the files you need to recover and select ‘recover’. For this data recovery process to work, make sure your Mac has an active internet connection.

ORICO Launches High-Performing Portable SSD Inspired by Mondrian

ORICO – Shenzhen-based innovative enterprise focusing on high-performance solutions for USB data transmission and charging – is proud to unveil the ORICO USB4 High Speed Portable SSD Montage 40Gbps series, with a striking and durable design inspired Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.

The bold and bright aesthetic draws from Mondrian’s famous work Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow, incorporating the thick black lines and blocks of color that immediately distinguish the device from the monochrome alternatives on the market. Loud, but not lurid, the design is applied with the durable in-mold labeling technique also found in automobile manufacturing for its resistance to corrosion.

However, the product engineers at ORICO do not pursue form over function and have invested in the right technology to make the Montage 40Gbps series one of the best-performing SSDs available. During performance testing, the drive achieved 3,126MB/s reading speed, a 2,832MB/s writing speed, and transferred 3GB files in just one second, matching, and even surpassing, many leading products currently on the market.

Accompanied by a versatile 2-in-1 data cable for USB type A and type C connections, the drive is widely compatible and able to be used with Mac OS, Windows, Android, and Linux operating systems without requiring a driver. Depending on user requirements, the Montage series offers capacity options ranging from 512GB to 2TB.

“We are so excited to launch the eye-catching Montage series, serving superior performance and carrying a timeless aesthetic that really transcends style trends,” commented Xu Yeyou, CEO of ORICO. “We had in mind on-the-go creatives, such as photographers and video editors, when designing the product.”

The current status of Derry casinos

Anyone in the city of Derry might be wondering what’s the current state of play regarding casinos. Why do the rules differ so much from the rest of the UK?

Well, in line with much of the governance of Northern Ireland in general, the legal regulations around gambling have been devolved. This means that the Northern Ireland government is free to set rules and regulations that are different from the rest of the UK. This includes gambling at brick-and-mortar establishments and online.

To help clear up any confusion, we will explain the current status of casinos in Derry and what the future may hold.

Land Based Casinos in Derry

There are no brick-and-mortar casinos in Derry at the time of writing. That’s because of The Betting, Gaming, Lotteries and Amusements (Northern Ireland) Order 1985

This legislation makes it unlawful to have prizes for competitions that don’t require a decent amount of skill. Many casino games fall into this bracket – as they are at least partially games of chance. Even games like Poker are not allowed. However, this does not apply for sports betting (there are betting shops available in Derry).

The law itself is very outdated. Not only was it enacted in 1985, it’s also based on regulations from the 1960s. For the rest of the UK, the Gambling Act 2005 applies. This is much more modern and means land-based casinos are available across England, Scotland, and Wales.

But as the power to regulate gambling has been devolved, Derry residents and visitors have been stuck with the old rules.

What alternatives are there?

There are no brick-and-mortar casinos in Northern Ireland at all. So the only real option for a land-based experience is to head across the border or Irish Sea.

Nearby Letterkenny in Ireland is about half an hour away from Derry by car and has a few decent – if not grand – casino options.

If a trip to Great Britain is on the cards, then most major cities have big brick-and-mortar casinos. The closest to Derry is probably Glasgow and Edinburgh to the north, or Liverpool and Manchester further south.

Online Casinos in Derry

There are no online casinos available in Derry at the time of writing. That’s because the old 1985 regulation applies to gambling on the internet. So online slots and casino games are not allowed to be offered in the country for a prize.

Again, this is in sharp contrast to the rest of the UK. As part of the Gambling Act 2005, online gambling is allowed in England, Scotland, and Wales. There’s a dedicated authority – the Gambling Commission – which grants licences for gambling websites to operate legally in Great Britain. Many websites have acquired a licence which affords Great British players a lot of choice. For example, they can browse lists as deep as the top 50 online casinos to find a place to play.

Whereas residents of Derry – and the rest of Northern Ireland – aren’t even able to gamble at one site.

What alternatives are there?

Unfortunately, none.

Unlike at land-based casinos, it’s not possible for you to head across the Irish border to play online.

Even an online casino in England, Scotland, or Wales isn’t an option. That’s because you need to complete the online casino verification procedure to be able to open an account in Great Britain. Part of this procedure involves verifying your address – with NI not being eligible.

A Brighter Future?

While no casinos officially exist in-person or online in Derry and Northern Ireland, there is reason for optimism.

It’s pretty widely accepted that the 1985 Act is not fit for purpose in the modern world. Until now, the NI government has never gotten round to amending it much – aside from a few tweaks here and there. However, the government’s stance has finally begun to change.

In April 2022, the first overhaul of NI’s online gambling regulation came into effect. This made betting shops more accessible, amongst other changes. However, a second – much wider – overhaul is expected to happen in the coming years. This is likely to change what is essentially a ban on all non-skill games of chance. It’s also likely to contain rules about gambling online.

One thing that’s unclear is whether the Gambling Commission’s powers would be extended to include Northern Ireland. Or if an entirely new authority would be created. Due to the way that the country is governed with powers often being devolved, it’s more likely that we’ll see a new authority take over.

But whoever takes over, these prospective changes would bring about a huge change for Derry. At least one brick-and-mortar casino would likely be built in the city. Residents would probably also be able to play casino online.

So after decades of being stuck in the dark, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel.

In March of 2021, Google Chrome, the world’s biggest browser, announced the phasing out of third-party cookies, which are a key component of online advertising, and enable a company to effectively target particular audiences for their products or services. By late 2023, third-party cookies will no longer be supported on the search engine.

The Compliance Institute, who rolled out a survey of 144 compliance professionals within Irish organisations nationwide, say the results speak to a severe lack of communication between the two departments that will play the most crucial roles in ensuring that businesses successfully adapt to the new changes, namely the compliance and marketing departments. The lack of collaboration between the two could very well prevent the organisation from fulling its regulatory duties and meeting the requirement of data protection legislation.

Further highlights from the Compliance Institute Cookie Survey reveal:

  • 6 in 10 say compliance and data protection teams within their organisation do not have a clear understanding of how 3rd party cookies are used within the organisation
  • 46% say the compliance function within their organisation has little to no involvement in aspects of marketing such as first & third-party cookies and data capture

Speaking of the findings, Michael Kavanagh, CEO of Compliance Institute ,

The findings highlight a sharp knowledge gap that exists within compliance and data protection departments of Irish organisations, and it seems that this is largely due to a communication blockage with the people in the business that are at the forefront of this type of data collection and utilisation i.e. those whose expertise and responsibility lies in marketing.

Major changes are coming down the tracks and there will be no getting around this. All organisations will be forced to change their practices, and find other ways to collect information needed to research the market and target key audiences while keeping within the boundaries of data protection laws.

But it is very hard to see how the GDPR requirement for data protection by design and default is being effectively implemented if nearly 6 in 10 respondents have little or no involvement in first- and third-party data strategies and data capture, and 32% have no involvement at all in the development of alternative strategies.

There is no way that these organisations can effectively prepare for the changes, unless they change their strategy and allow for and enable much clearer lines of communication.

Marketers need to do more to engage with their compliance colleagues. And compliance teams need to take the time to get to understand, what is, a fundamental part of their business, and one with a high potential risk for GDPR breaches”.
