Smart D8 Opens Doors to Health and Wellbeing Innovators for Sixth Consecutive Year

Smart D8, Dublin’s first smart district dedicated to addressing community health and wellbeing needs and located in the heart of Dublin 8, has officially launched its sixth open call for pilot projects.

Since October 2020, the Smart D8 partnership has connected innovators with citizen expertise through enterprise, healthcare, academia, government and other areas of the public sector, collectively aiming to address health and wellbeing challenges identified by the local D8 community.

Now entering its sixth year, this year’s call focuses on innovative pilot projects across three key themes:

  • Nutrition
  • Social Connectedness
  • Workplace Wellbeing

Up to three pilot projects will each receive up to €10,000 in funding, but crucially will be supported to validate their innovation with real users. Those selected will have the opportunity to trial new and emerging innovations for illness prevention with a general population to measure and evaluate their population health impacts – demonstrating their potential to positively impact people’s lives locally, nationally and internationally.

Since its inception, Smart D8 has established strong community connections through outreach with residents, businesses, schools, local organisations and networks to understand health and wellbeing priority areas and needs. Engaging with service providers, innovators and entrepreneurs to trial and test new products, services and ideas, the partnership works to matchmake innovative content and technologies with community networks and demonstrate their impacts on population health to scale.

Operating through funded pilot calls and partnerships, the Smart D8 testbed supports access to local knowledge and expertise and facilitates the development of innovative approaches that can enhance health and wellbeing with and in the local community.

Through the combined effort of pilot projects, local workshop initiatives and established engagement with existing community networks, Smart D8 has reached over 21,500 citizens living and working in Dublin 8, over 45% of the 45,000-strong population.

Smart D8 is led by The Digital Hub, Dublin City Council, St James’s Hospital and Smart Dublin. They are joined by Tyndall National Institute, St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, Trinity College Dublin, Trinity Translational Medicine Institute, National College of Art & Design, the Guinness Enterprise Centre, Health Innovation Hub Ireland and the HSE in this unique collaborative initiative.

Applications will close on Thursday, 26th March at 11pm. For more information on Smart D8 and to find out how to apply for the latest round of pilot projects, please visit https://smartd8.ie.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Ray McAdam, said:

“I am proud to see our city continue to lead with purpose, placing community wellbeing, innovation and sustainability at the centre of how we shape Dublin’s future. Smart D8 represents the very best of civic collaboration, bringing together innovators, researchers, public services and citizens to test ideas that improve everyday life. By grounding innovation in evidence and in lived experience, it is building a model for healthier communities that can be scaled across our capital and beyond. I strongly encourage innovators with bold, practical and evidence-led ideas to step forward and partner with us. Together, we can demonstrate how place-based collaboration delivers real change for Dublin 8 and sets a standard for cities everywhere.”

Speaking on the opening of pilot applications, Smart D8 Ecosystem Manager, Jack Lehane, said:

“As Smart D8 moves into its sixth year, we take great pride in the scale of engagement so far, and are especially motivated by the opportunities that lie ahead. In 2026, we will continue to build on this momentum by focusing on themes that have the greatest potential to identify and validate population health solutions, including nutrition, social connectedness and workplace wellbeing.

The partnership provides changemakers with a chance to connect their innovations with citizens in real-world community settings, and demonstrate their ability to scale to wider populations. We strongly encourage organisations from any sector that have population-scale innovations in these areas to apply, and look forward to seeing more projects deliver measurable impacts and outcomes across the Dublin 8 community and beyond in the year ahead.”

Ana Coughlan, Smart D8 Community Coordinator, added:

“At Smart D8, our mission is to improve community health and wellbeing through meaningful collaboration and innovation, while amplifying the efforts of those already committed to making a difference in people’s lives. We have built a strong network of community-centred initiatives that involve residents, workers and students to support healthier lifestyles, and this year’s themes are chosen based on this outreach. We will continue to expand our impact by welcoming pilot proposals that focus on innovative approaches to illness prevention, helping to create a stronger, healthier and more connected Dublin 8.”

Google Year in Search results moments that captured Ireland’s attention in 2025

As the year draws to a close, Google’s Year in Search reveals the questions we asked Google, the people who caught our interest, and the everyday curiosities we wanted to solve.

For a country obsessed with weather it’s no surprise that the record breaking Storm Eowyn, was the most searched term of the year. The storm which hit Ireland in January was one of the most powerful and widespread wind events to hit Ireland since the 1800s. People also turned to Google to find out how to pronounce the storm’s name with ‘How to pronounce Eowyn’ as the third most popular ‘How to’ search term.

Asking Google questions is an everyday occurrence for most people. In a year where Ireland welcomed a new President for the first time in 14 years, the election had a big impact on the most searched lists. People used Google to not only find out more about Ireland’s new President, Catherine Connolly, who was the third most searched overall term and most searched person this year but also the presidential election in general. Ireland’s presidential election featured on the most searched list and in the ‘How To’ list, ‘How to spoil your vote Ireland’ was the second most searched term while ‘How to register to vote in Ireland’ was the fifth most searched term.

2025 was another huge year for sport. The Ryder Cup, in which Europe was victorious, was the second most searched term overall and football and rugby also featured on the most searched list. Champions League is the fifth most searched term, the Club World Cup is the sixth and Ireland v France rounded out the list.

The Top 10 Most Googled recipe list gives us a glimpse into what Ireland has been up to in the kitchen. This year Ireland leaned into comfort and creativity with coffee topping the list followed by the social-media hit, Dubai Chocolate.  Three cocktails bubbled up the chart; the Pornstar Martini, Hugo Spritz and Pimms. Pancakes, Gooseberry Jam and Cupcakes also featured on the list.

2025 was the year of TV shows people couldn’t stop talking about or searching. Monster: The Ed Gein Story and Adolescence were the most searched TV shows and they also featured on the overall most searched list showing their popularity. Google Search also helped people decide what to see in the cinema this year with Nosferatu, 28 Years Later and Superman all featuring at the top of the most searched Movie list.

Everyday questions and timely answers are what millions of people seek on Google every day. From health and wellbeing to social media trends and sports, Search helps Ireland navigate the practicalities of daily life and understand what’s shaping the news .‘What is Listeria?’ topped the ‘What is’ list and other trending questions asked by the Irish public were ‘What is 6 7?’ and ‘What is a tariff?’.

Search can help you find a world of information – and the way people use Search can be a window into the world. Take a closer look at this year’s trending lists at yearinsearch.google

You get on board storage and you can add storage via a micro sd card giving you ample room to get creative and take photos and videos to your hearts content and sift through them later on.

Kids can also create a journal which I like here and this is good for mental health and your wellbeing and your child can express themselves in a more realistic manner with videos images and by writing down things which is good.

Setting up takes two minutes of your time and the materials used are exactly what you need  being durable and scratch resistant, currently LOLA has an armchair for dogs which she sits there like a king and she sits in this like one too and approves, infact when I went to get my camera and placed the bed down she did a burner into it behind my back which was hilarious

as I wanted to get a video of her doing so she is dead wide to the camera now with me and having featured in several reviews and is a one shot chance only and take a hike for pictures.

Overall from my point of view here this is comfortable with a pillow in center and is a simple product to use and maintain and keep your dog or cat happy also providing orthopedic support.

The Better Phone Project: First phone co-created for children by parents to protect their mental wellbeing

Tech innovator HMD is creating a phone as an alternative for a smartphone to give parents control over their child’s screen time and social media use.

The aim is to preserve the mental health of the next generation with a phone parents have co-created in order to protect their children and provide better balance.

The digital detox space is one HMD is familiar with having spearheaded the dumbphone trend by reimagining feature phone classics for the modern consumer seeking to limit their screen time and social media use.

The phone manufacturer is now seeking to work with parents to co-create a phone and other new solutions which will serve as credible substitutes for a smartphone and give parents control over their child’s screen time and social media use.

It is hoped the new device will also appeal to Generation Z who have embraced the digital detox space.

HMD is also working with a number of experts, campaigners and parent support groups to better understand the solutions needed. All will be involved in global webinars and forums to ensure collaboration and co-creation is at the heart of HMD’s The Better Phone Project. They can sign-up to be involved at https://www.hmd.com/en_int/better-phone-project

Lars Silberbauer, CMO of HMD, said: “The Better Phone Project is a journey to discovering a variety of solutions that tackle digital overload, providing choice and balance.  Our goal is to collaborate with parents and experts to develop solutions that truly meet people’s needs, driving innovation in this space.”

As part of The Better Phone Project, HMD commissioned new global research to provide insight into the dilemmas parents face when it comes to their children and smartphone use.1

The findings revealed 11 is the average age when a parent hands over a smartphone to their child for the first time – but many confessed they wished they had waited longer.

The worldwide survey of 10,000 parents in the UK, US, India, Germany and Australia found more than half of those questioned said they regret exposing their child to a smartphone at such a young age. A third of those who responded cited the negative effects of the device and changes in personality as the key reasons for this. Concerns have been raised consistently about the impact social media apps, which often go hand-in-hand with smartphones, have on children.

A staggering 70% of parents questioned admitted their smartphone-free childhood meant they engaged more with their family – however, it is quality time their children don’t experience: 55% say their child’s phone use is a source of big arguments and a third have cried over their child’s phone obsession.

Some 64% of parents questioned said smartphone use negatively impacts their child’s sleep, 61% think it reduces the amount of physical activity they take, and more than half (54%) worried that it will reduce the amount of time they spend socialising with friends.

With more than half of parents agreeing smartphones can have a positive impact on their children and benefit them educationally – including allowing them to keep in touch with friends – parents clearly face a dilemma.

Tech innovator HMD is now striving to understand these challenges and offer a suite of new and innovative solutions which could work for parents, their children, Generation Z or anyone who is looking for credible alternatives to a smartphone.

HMD is also keen to work with anyone who is interested in this subject and would like to be part of the journey to create change and new solutions. They can sign-up to be involved at https://www.hmd.com/en_int/better-phone-project (URL will go live on 24 July).

Other key points to emerge from the global survey include almost 75% of parents fearing smartphones expose their children to internet dangers, with more than half admitting they don’t know what their children get up to when using their phones.

Almost half of parents believe mobile phone use has changed their child’s personality, with a third claiming their child has body image issues due to their phones.

Joe Ryrie Co-founder of Smartphone Free Childhood said: “We’re delighted that HMD is committed to addressing the glaring gap in the market for child-friendly phones through this project. Their research into children and smartphones is yet more evidence of the impossible position that parents find themselves in today; We either give our children access to a device they might not be ready for, or choose not to and risk alienating them from their peers.

“It’s an issue that the 100,000+ parents who’ve joined our community since February are battling with on a daily basis, and we know that solving it requires a collaborative effort between parents, children, government and tech companies.

“Parents in our community are crying out for a phone which is desirable to children but isn’t designed to steal their attention. So we’re very excited about collaborating with HMD to help define what a modern child-friendly phone should be.”
