Irish Rugby stars unite to promote positive online experiences for young people

International stars from the Men’s and Women’s Irish Rugby Teams have joined forces to promote more positive online experiences among young people.

In collaboration with the Vodafone Foundation’s Tozi App, influential Irish rugby players Caelan Doris, Mack Hansen, and Josh van der Flier from the Men’s team, along with Deirbhile Nic a Bháird, Fiona Tuite, and Dorothy Wall from the Women’s team, have created a series of online videos to support young people with their online experiences.

These videos share their personal experiences with digital resilience, emphasise the importance of kindness, and offer valuable advice to their 12-year-old selves.

The Vodafone Foundation Tozi App, developed in partnership with DCU Anti-Bullying Centre and Childline by ISPCC, aims to empower young people to navigate the digital world safely and positively.

As prominent sports figures, they have a substantial following on social media and frequently engage with both positive and negative interactions online. They shared their insights on managing the heightened presence of social media and offered advice to young people on handling the varied reactions they encounter.

Dorothy Wall, Ireland Women’s player, shared her advice to her 12-year-old self: “Your close people just want to make sure you’re okay. People around you are the most important thing and can lift you up when you’re low, but you need to let them know when you’re feeling down.”

Ireland Men’s Captain, Caelan Doris, highlighted the importance of kindness and how the smallest interaction, good or bad, can have the biggest impact: “It goes back to being kind, whether in person or online. It’s easy to post something negative or nice online, but you don’t always see the impact it might have on that person. So, be mindful and be kind.”

Ireland Women’s player, Fiona Tuite also gave advice to younger people on how to deal with negative comments online. She said: “It’s not the real world. These are anonymous people. Put the phone away. Who cares what they think. They don’t know anything about you your life or what’s going with you. Put the phone away and go talk to real people.”

The Tozi app is available for free download and usage from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Liz Roche, Head of the Vodafone Foundation in Ireland emphasised the importance of the Tozi App in a challenging time for young people online: “With the increase in online activity among young people, the Tozi App provides research-backed resources and learning tools to help young people manage their online presence. Since its launch in 2023, Tozi has made a significant impact, achieving nearly 4,000 downloads. Polls have emerged as the most popular content type on the app, offering bite-sized, quick-reward content that allows users to test their knowledge and opinions while viewing responses from others. We recommend all parents and guardians to encourage their children to download the App if they have a phone. It is free to download and use, and available to everyone, regardless of their network provider.”

Tozi is designed to educate, empower, and support young people with a range of engaging features:

  • Cosmos: A rich content library offering stories, tips, and advice on handling common online challenges such as account hacks, ghosting, trolling, grieving, and self-esteem issues.

  • Live Help: Direct access to call or chat with Childline by ISPCC.

  • My Space: A private journaling area featuring a gamified diary and feelings-tracker.

SIRO AND VODAFONE ANNOUNCED AS CONNECTIVITY PARTNERS FOR CARRICKMACROSS CTEK2 ENTERPRISE HUB

SIRO and Vodafone have been announced as connectivity partners for Monaghan’s newest enterprise hub, CTEK2. The Carrickmacross enterprise hub was officially opened earlier this month by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys T.D., with representatives from Monaghan County Council, Enterprising Monaghan, elected representatives and other key stakeholders all in attendance.

The CTEK2 Hub has now also joined the Gigabit Hub Initiative. The Initiative is a partnership between SIRO and Vodafone, which brings Gigabit Fibre Connectivity to remote working and digital hubs across Ireland. CTEK2 is joining a host of other successful Hubs across Ireland, such as Dundalk’s Creative Spark, Galway’s PorterShed and Skibbereen Ludgate Hub which have already benefitted from the Initiative. CTEK2 is the 24th Hub to join the Initiative.

The CTEK2 Hub can now provide businesses and tenants with high-speed, high-quality fibre connectivity, supported by SIRO’s 100% fibre network, which can provide speeds of up to 25 Gigabits,  future proofing the service for decades to come. This means that as the bandwidth and speed needs of Monaghan businesses grow in the years to come the CTEK2 Hub can continue to keep pace with their needs.

CTEK2 is already proving hugely popular with the Carrickmacross and wider Monaghan business community, with 11 tenants already availing of the 17 units onsite. The new hub compliments the existing CTEK1 building located next door, which has been open for several years. The new Hub is already supporting 50 jobs. Businesses using the Hub include a home care provider, an accountancy firm, an executive car rental company and physical therapist, among others. Overall, the 1,450-square-meter facility supports regional talent retention, provides a work base for former commuters, and attracts start-ups from Monaghan and surrounding counties.

Offering a range of office options, from hot desks to private spaces, CTEK2 is designed to meet the needs of various users, from solo entrepreneurs to established enterprises. Its extensive facilities, including ample parking and kitchen spaces, allowing tenants to work in a flexible, professional environment close to home. As CTEK2 continues to grow, it plans to host community events and offer further professional development opportunities, solidifying its role as a cornerstone for local business success and innovation.

SIRO is a leading full fibre broadband operator rolling out a 100% fibre broadband network across Ireland. Its network is already available in Carrickmacross and Monaghan town.

Monaghan County Council CEO Robert Burns stated:

“Supporting innovation and driving economic growth in the region are top priorities for Monaghan County Council. We are confident that the partnership between SIRO and Vodafone will significantly advance these goals. The Gigabit Hub Initiative, with its provision of high-speed connectivity, will foster the development of new businesses in the Carrickmacross area and promote sustainable job creation throughout the region.”

SIRO CEO John Keaney said:

“We’re pleased to partner with Monaghan County Council to bring Gigabit connectivity to CTEK2, a vital addition to Carrickmacross that supports local business growth and job creation. Through the Gigabit Hub Initiative, we are committed to empowering business communities across Ireland by providing the high-speed, reliable infrastructure they need to innovate, attract talent, and expand into new markets. CTEK2 is an excellent example of how world-class connectivity can drive regional economic growth, and we look forward to seeing the impact it will have on the local community.”

Vodafone Ireland CEO Amanda Nelson commented: “Vodafone is pleased to partner with Enterprising Monaghan to provide 100% fibre broadband at their new Carrickmacross facility as part of our Gigabit Hub Initiative. This high-speed connectivity will serve as an asset for the facility’s thriving community of businesses, start-ups, and remote professionals, enabling them with the digital infrastructure essential for growth and success, both locally and beyond.”

Vodafone, first telco to sign Corporate Power Purchase Agreement in Ireland

Vodafone Ireland has signed a new Corporate Power Purchasing Agreement (CPPA) with energy supplier Flogas, along with its infrastructure partner Vantage Towers.

This agreement allows Vodafone to directly purchase renewable electricity from the Derrynadivva Wind Farm located in Mayo. Vodafone is the first telco in Ireland to sign a CPPA.

The investment of €6million is part of the company’s sustainability goals to achieve net zero across its full value chain by 2040. Combined with other agreements Vodafone has in place, 100% of its Irish operations are matched with certificates of renewable energy sources in Ireland.

The energy secured within this agreement gives Vodafone access to clean, high quality and affordable renewable electricity for its extensive network of cables that deliver mobile and fixed services to customers across Ireland. As part of this agreement, the company’s infrastructure partners, Vantage Towers will also receive renewable energy from the Derrynadivva Wind Farm.

Amanda Nelson, CEO at Vodafone Ireland said: “We are proud of the steps we’re taking to not only support our customers to be greener but also green our own operations. Today’s announcement is an investment in Ireland and its renewable energy industry. This is a significant step towards our own ambitious net zero targets.’’

Brian McHugh, Managing Director at Vantage Towers Ireland said: “Vantage Towers’ infrastructure network is totally powered by renewable energy, in line with our global ESG agenda. Sustainability is a necessity, and this agreement with Flogas is a further commitment to minimizing the impact of our business on the environment, and a continued investment in Ireland’s natural generating capability.’’

Pat Brett, Director at Derrynadivva Wind Farm Ltd said: “We are thrilled that Derrynadivva Wind Farm in Co Mayo continues to play a pivotal role in Ireland’s transition to a sustainable energy future. By delivering clean, renewable wind energy to some of the nation’s largest companies, we are not only helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also supporting these businesses in their commitment to more efficient and responsible energy consumption.”

James Temple, Renewables Manager at Flogas, said: “The CPPA with Vodafone Ireland underscores the accelerating commitment of Irish companies to increase their use of carbon-free energy and lead in renewable energy adoption. As a leading provider of clean energy CPPAs, Flogas is dedicated to enhancing the economic feasibility of renewable projects and advancing Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon economy.”

Vodafone’s sustainability strategy also focuses on reducing its energy consumption. In Ireland, the company uses an Intelligent Energy Management System. This is a system in which a machine learning algorithm across the 4G network analyses traffic patterns in real-time, allowing Vodafone reduce congestion and ultimately reduce energy consumption by 10 to 15%.

Vodafone Ireland also provides ways for customers be more sustainable including ‘Fix & Go’ for repairs and upgrades to extend the lifecycle of phones, as well as eSIMs which reduce carbon emissions by removing the need to manufacture and ship plastic, and a variety of eco accessories.

In 2022, Vodafone became the first telco in Ireland to offer a device trade-in service which has been very well received by customers, with over 35,000 devices returned to Vodafone to date. The initiative offers customers up to €400 for old smartphone devices which customers can use as store credit towards the purchase of a new device or receive payment directly into their bank account. After the device is traded in Vodafone ensures each device is refurbed, recycled or repurposed, as part of our commitment to a circular economy.

Parenting in a Digital World: Vodafone Foundation in Ireland launches parents’ guide to help keep children safe online

The Vodafone Foundation in Ireland has announced the launch of a new guide for parents and guardians which aims to provide resources to ensure children are kept safe in the digital world.

The ’Parenting in a Digital World’ guide has been designed to empower parents and guardians in navigating the complexities of devices and digital safety. It is available for free, both in Vodafone stores nationwide and online at www.vodafone.ie.

The new resource provides practical advice and insights on key topics such as setting up parental controls, building digital resilience and addressing cyberbullying. Recognising the growing concerns around children’s online activities, the Vodafone Foundation has developed this guide to help parents make informed decisions and take proactive steps to protect their children online.

Key Features of the Guide Include:

  • Advice on building digital resilience to help children cope with negative online experiences.
  • Guidance on navigating cyberbullying: How to recognise the signs and what actions to take if a child is a victim.
  • Tools for safe connectivity: Options for basic phones with limited internet access for children.
  • Partnership resources: Information on additional support available through Vodafone’s partnerships with the ISPCC and Dublin City University Anti-Bullying Centre.
  • Step-by-Step instructions on how to use parental controls and the Vodafone Secure Net app to manage a child’s online experience.

Speaking about the new parents’ guide, Head of the Vodafone Foundation, Liz Roche said: Connectivity brings many benefits. Yet, we know that the decision as to when a child is ready to access the digital world on their own devices can be a difficult one.

Our parents’ guide is designed to make it easier for parents and guardians to manage their child’s online activities while fostering a safe and positive digital environment. Whether it’s understanding the importance of digital resilience for their child or learning how to set up parental controls, this guide has everything parents need to feel confident about their child’s online safety.”

ISPCC Childline Chief Executive John Church said “ISPCC is delighted to support the Vodafone Foundation in Ireland as it launches this timely guide for parents to keep their children safe online.

The online landscape is ever-changing, and that’s a scary prospect for even the most tech-savvy of parents. The pressure on young people is ever present. This guide will be an extremely useful resource for parents wanting to equip their children with the necessary skills to navigate the online world safely.

At the ISPCC we are proud to partner with the Vodafone Foundation as we strive to support parents to ensure that children and young people have positive experiences online.”

The Tozi app – An additional online resource for children:

The Vodafone Foundation has also reminded parents and guardians that among the resources available to them is the Tozi App which helps children understand the impact their digital lives may be having on their mental wellbeing.

In partnership with Dublin City University’s Anti-Bullying Centre and the ISPCC, the Tozi App offers support for children and young people by educating them on how to be safe and well online, while offering instant support if they need it. The Tozi app is available for free download and usage from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Virgin Media announces wholesale deal with Vodafone Ireland

Virgin Media Ireland and Vodafone Ireland have today agreed a wholesale network access deal, which will see Vodafone offering their customers fixed line broadband services using Virgin Media’s superfast fibre broadband network.

The Virgin Media network passes 1 million premises across Ireland, offering broadband speeds of 1Gbps (gigabits per second). Virgin Media’s ongoing €200m network upgrade to full fibre over the next three years will support speeds up to 10Gbps. Virgin Media has already upgraded over 150,000 premises to fibre across the Virgin network.

Through this new wholesale network access agreement between the companies, Vodafone’s customers will now have more choice and will be able to avail of Virgin Media’s expanding Fibre network.

Tony Hanway, Chief Executive of Virgin Media Ireland said, “We’re very pleased to provide network access opportunities to other operators for the first time and we welcome Vodafone as our first wholesale network partner. It’s all systems go as we continue to expand our network nationally and bring ultrafast fibre connectivity to over 240,000 homes by the end of 2022, and over 1 million homes by 2025. Our entry into the wholesale market will support more competition while improving service delivery for consumers, businesses and communities across Ireland.”

Amanda Nelson, CEO of Vodafone Ireland said, “As Ireland’s largest Fibre to the Home market provider in Ireland, and the fastest growing broadband provider over the last 12 months, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to bring the best products and solutions to our customers. Our new broadband partnership with Virgin Media means Vodafone customers will be able to avail of their Fibre to the Premise network, as they continue to upgrade to fibre around the country. Having recently celebrated 21 years in Ireland, we are looking forward to supporting our customers and businesses across the country long into the future, ensuring balanced regional development and a resilient and strengthened economy. Partnerships such as this, demonstrate our continued focus on our significant network investment strategy, as we look to continually upgrade and refresh our capabilities in Ireland.”

CyberSmart Partners with Vodafone Ireland to Enable Secure Connectivity for SMEs

CyberSmart, a UK leader in simple and accessible automated cybersecurity technology for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), has today announced its strategic partnership with Vodafone Ireland. Following the launch of productivity solutions including Office 365 and AppHelp by Vodafone, this initiative to bolster cybersecurity defences serves as a natural progression to equip SMEs for successful, secure ways of working in today’s digital age. The move also represents CyberSmart’s debut on the European market, marking a significant step for the company toward global expansion.

recent study published in October 2021 found that over half of Irish small businesses have paid a ransom demand, averaging at €22,712. In fact, a majority (57%) have also created a cryptocurrency reserve in case they are needed to pay a ransom. Yet, in spite of this general awareness of cyber threats and anticipation of ransom demands, only 39% of SMEs in Ireland believe they are well-protected from attacks. Through CyberSmart’s platform, Vodafone will help businesses to change the narrative and prevent them from falling victim to cybercriminals.

With little to no IT expertise required, CyberSmart’s technology continuously assesses all laptops, mobiles and tablets against best practices, and recommends fixes to reduce cyber risk – regardless of the network a device operates on, whether it is company or employee-owned, while home or remote working. They offer a trust seal to demonstrate the business’ commitment and compliance with said best practices. CyberSmart also provides SMEs with digital security training for all staff and a GDPR compliant data protection policy.

Managing Director of Vodafone Business in Ireland, Sinead Bryan said: “Vodafone is committed to providing essential connectivity solutions to Irish SMEs. This new automated security service and partnership with CyberSmart further enables us to safeguard our SME customers, support them on their digital transformation journey and protect them from the ever-growing cyber threat environment”

“Since inception, CyberSmart’s primary objective has been to empower SMEs to take back control of their cybersecurity. Our technology is affordable, straightforward to implement, but most importantly, easy to use. SMEs are under-attack and underserved – we’re looking forward to supporting the tens of thousands of Irish SMEs that fend off cyberattacks on a daily basis.” said Jamie Akhtar, CEO and co-founder of CyberSmart. “We are thrilled to be working alongside Vodafone Ireland, whose vision very closely aligns with ours. The world has gone digital in the last couple of years, and we’re here to make sure SMEs can stay resilient and secure online.”
