Introducing a new Airbnb for a new world of travel

With a new way to search designed around Airbnb Categories, the innovative Split Stays feature, and AirCover for guests, this launch represents the biggest change to Airbnb in a decade.

Last year, Airbnb released 150 upgrades to improve every aspect of the Airbnb service. Today, they are launching the biggest change to Airbnb in a decade including:

  • Airbnb Categories – A new way to search that makes it easy to discover millions of homes you never knew existed.
  • Split Stays – An innovative feature that provides more options for longer stays by splitting your trip between two homes.
  • AirCover for guests – The most comprehensive protection in travel, included for free with every stay.

“The way people travel has changed forever. That’s why we’re introducing the biggest change to Airbnb in a decade,” said Brian Chesky, CEO and Co-Founder of Airbnb. “First, people are more flexible about where they live and work, so we’ve designed a new way to search with Airbnb Categories. Second, people are taking longer trips, so we created Split Stays to give you more options by splitting your trip between two homes. And third, we’re introducing AirCover for guests, giving you the confidence to book knowing that Airbnb’s got your back.”

Airbnb Categories

Millions of people are now more flexible about where they live and work. But travel search has been the same for 25 years — you enter a location and dates into a search box. Most of us can only think of a few dozen cities to type into the search box, but there are Airbnbs in 100,000 towns and cities around the world.

That’s why they are introducing a new way to search designed around Airbnb Categories, making it easy to discover millions of unique homes you never knew existed. When you open Airbnb, you’re presented with 56 categories that organize homes based on their style, location, or proximity to a travel activity. When you search for a destination, your search results are also organized by categories that are relevant to that destination. As you view different categories, the map intelligently zooms to show you where the homes are located.

To create Airbnb Categories, we evaluate millions of homes using machine learning to analyze titles, written descriptions, photo captions, structured data from Hosts, and reviews from guests. Members of Airbnb’s curation team review listings and hand-pick featured photos — so if a listing is in the Amazing Pools Category, the first photo shows a pool. Then, each category goes through a final check to help ensure consistency and photo quality.

The 56 Airbnb Categories include more than 4 million unique homes that are made possible by Airbnb Hosts all around the world. Airbnb Categories organize homes by what makes them unique, which helps people discover places they wouldn’t have otherwise found. This can help alleviate over-tourism by redistributing travel to new locations beyond the same popular destinations.

Split Stays

In the last three months*, nearly half of nights booked on Airbnb were for trips of a week or more. That’s why we created Split Stays, an innovative feature that splits your trip between two homes. With Split Stays, you will typically see around 40% more listings when searching for longer stays.

When searching a specific destination, Split Stays automatically appear in your search results. They also appear within 14 categories — including Camping, National Parks, Skiing, and Surfing — to inspire you to stay in two destinations as part of a longer trip.

When viewing Split Stays on a map, an animated line visually connects the two homes to show you the distance between them and the sequence of the stays. Once you select a Split Stay, you’re guided through an easy-to-use interface to book each stay, one home at a time.

AirCover for Guests

This summer, millions of people will travel for the first time since the start of the pandemic. That’s why we created AirCover, the most comprehensive protection in travel. AirCover is always included and always free, and it represents the biggest upgrade to Airbnb customer service in a decade.

With AirCover, you’re covered by four protections every time you stay on Airbnb:

  • Booking Protection Guarantee – In the unlikely event a Host needs to cancel your booking within 30 days of check-in, we’ll find you a similar or better home, or we’ll refund you. Check-In Guarantee – If you can’t check into your home and the Host cannot resolve the issue, we’ll find you a similar or better home for the length of your original stay, or we’ll refund you. Get-What-You-Booked Guarantee – If at any time during your stay you find your listing isn’t as advertised — for example, the refrigerator stops working and your Host can’t easily fix it, or there are fewer bedrooms than listed — you’ll have three days to report it and we’ll find you a similar or better home, or we’ll refund you.
  • 24-hour Safety Line – If you ever feel unsafe, you’ll get priority access to specially-trained safety agents, day or night.

AirCover has been designed directly into the Airbnb app and website, making it easy for you to contact an agent and resolve issues quickly. We created a team of specially trained agents for last-minute rebooking assistance. We also significantly expanded our 24-hour safety line to cover 16 languages.

Available starting today

Airbnb’s redesigned app and website with over 50 categories of unique homes, the innovative Split Stays feature, and AirCover for guests will be available worldwide this week, with rollout starting in the US today.

Is it possible to use cryptocurrency to cover your travel costs?

Cryptocurrency has become an increasingly popular payment method across a variety of industries, and the travel space is no exception. Now the travel industry has opened up again, acceptance of digital currencies is considered to be a way of helping the industry recover.

Which Companies Accept Cryptocurrency?

Cryptocurrency has emerged as an effective payment option for a range of different applications and platforms and is becoming increasingly mainstream. The number of companies embracing crypto is growing, with those such as Starbucks, AXA Insurance, Tesla and Mastercard allowing customers to use cryptocurrencies as an accepted payment method. More recently, we have seen travel companies opening their doors to the world of cryptocurrency payments and decentralized blockchains. Those companies include:

  • Cheap Air

  • Bitcoin Travel

  • Travala

  • Expedia

  • Webjet Exclusives

  • Destinia

Travel companies such as Staysure, the UK’s largest provider of travel insurance, have also shown their interest in the currency, creating their interactive site ‘My Bitcoin Holiday‘ to display the rapid rate of bitcoin growth over the past decade. The brand has placed an emphasis on the benefits of long-term investment by charting the rise of bitcoin over the past decade in the novel medium of budgeting for a holiday.

What are the Benefits of Booking with Cryptocurrency?

Although there are a limited number of people currently booking their holidays using cryptocurrency, there is a likely chance that the number of people using crypto as an official payment method will rise due to the number of benefits, such as:

  • Flexibility when booking travel
  • Transparency – transactions through cryptocurrency are secured and verified through cryptography.
  • Services for identification – blockchain has the potential to improve the efficiency of identification services. A fingerprint or retina scan can be used as a form of identification, allowing check in and airport wait-times to be reduced.
  • Luggage Tracking – The decentralized nature of crypto payments can allow for tracking data to be shared across firms, meaning luggage can be tracked internationally.

Whilst cryptocurrency adoption within the travel industry remains in its infancy, it’s clear that we’re seeing various signals that adoption of cryptocurrency payments is continuing to grow. The growing popularity of cryptocurrencies is making traveling easier than ever. The efficiency in completing international transactions, as well as the security and transparency of public blockchain technologies, means more and more traveling companies are accepting digital currency for flights around the world.

Five popular travel companies using Blockchain!

Blockchain has been emerging as a potent technological force for the past few years. Now, it aims to change the status quo of the travel industry so that technology can take place in travelling. You might have seen that different companies nowadays are adopting Blockchain and cryptocurrency services on a broader scale. Blockchain is impacting a lot of industries. Most people trade using cryptocurrencies, and therefore, unknowingly, getting its benefits. As a result, Blockchain became a game-changer in the trading world. Now, it is also setting its foot deep down into the fragmentation of the travel and tourism industry in different corners of the world. If you want to start bitcoin trading check the prominent btc lightning networks wallet to opt in 2022.

You should also know that the travelling industry is not just one thing. It comprises different parts, and therefore, a traveller has to pay attention to all of them. It may comprise flights, Hotels, car rentals, and many more. It is quite a hustling task, and therefore, Blockchain technology takes part in it. Blockchain can make everything sophisticated for companies, and therefore, many companies are already dealing with it. Companies present at the global level want to modify the travel industry. Blockchain technology can be helpful, and therefore, it is taking the possible advantage out of it. It has already provided services to the travel industry because it is straightforward to implement in supply chain management. It can help the industry trace data whenever required, and it is undoubtedly an essential advantage. Some companies are willing to establish the place of Blockchain in the travel industry more prominent than ever before, and they are in this post.

Winding tree

This company displaces the whole online booking hubs leading the travel industry. Some of the major companies like Expedia are the ones who dominate the booking of airlines. But, the services provided by these companies come at a considerable cost to the travellers and service providers. Here comes the use of Blockchain technology. The block in technology used by the winding tree company aims at eliminating these middlemen as a whole. They want to make the industry utterly transparent in front of the consumers and the service providers. These big companies act as the middleman or gatekeepers of the services, and therefore, they charge enormous prices for their services. The winding three aims at eliminating these companies so that there could be an equitable distribution of the travel industry market.

Webjet

When you lose your hotel bookings or travel tickets, you will get additional tension. It can be inaccurate, and therefore, you will face tremendous problems in your travelling journey. When this happens, as a customer, you will incur any charges that you may take up to retrieve your bookings. The food supply chain management provided by the old companies is not familiar with this kind of problem. Here comes the use of Blockchain technology as it can provide distributed ledger technology. With the help of this company, customers can get assurance and avoid any inaccuracies with their air tickets or hotel bookings. Furthermore, it makes it easier for them to keep track of everything they have booked with the Blockchain.

Sandblock

It is a company based in Spain. The company aims at providing a different landscape for the loyalty programs by different travel companies. With the help of a blockchain-based platform, this company allows customers to change their loyalty coins into loyalty tokens. Hence, the customers get the capability of changing their brand-specific rewards into loyalty tokens that are already on.

Accenture

Waiting for an extended period at the Airport lines is one of the most hustling tasks about travelling. After that, you have to go to the security changes, but it can take a lot of time with the traditional approach. Therefore, Blockchain technology is used by the Accenture company to shorten this period. It has developed a traveller digital identity system to decrease the waiting time.

Travel chain

It is a company based in Russia and removing intermediaries from the supply chain of the travel industry. The users are given the handle of their data to collect it and monetize it to keep it safe from others. They can also get tokens for sharing their data with the travel company.

  • Border reopenings reveal pent-up demand: In the US, which historically is the largest inbound travel market in the world — during the week following the October 15 announcement of the November 8 reopening date, nights booked by foreign guests for stays starting November 8 increased by 44%

Aer Lingus signs deal with Daon to extend use of VeriFLY app

Aer Lingus has signed a deal with Daon to extend the use of the VeriFLY app, following the successful rollout of the technology across its network.  Aer Lingus’s investment in VeriFLY allows customers to upload and receive approval of their travel documentation at home before travelling to the airport – particularly helpful in the context of the new travel requirements for entry into the USA*.  By using VeriFLY, Aer Lingus customers will be able to check in online and go straight to bag drop / boarding gate and avoid any queuing at check-in.

Aer Lingus started trialling VeriFLY in April 2021 and the airline is now using the app on the vast majority of its operations, including flights to and from Europe, from UK to Ireland, UK to and from Barbados and on transatlantic routes to and from the USA. To date, up to 250,000 Aer Lingus customers have successfully used the VeriLFY app.

The VeriFLY app can be downloaded for free to mobile devices and is designed to offer peace-of-mind before travelling. The app allows customers to upload Covid-19 related documentation required for travel to their destination, including vaccination records and negative Covid-19 results.  The documentation is then approved. Customers receive a “green tick” on the app, letting them know they have met the appropriate Covid-19 entry requirements for their destination. Aer Lingus customers travelling to USA will only be able to check-in online once they have verified their documentation using VeriFLY. This will help reduce any uncertainty or stress associated with travelling. At the airport, customers travelling to the USA will show their boarding pass to the Aer Lingus agents at the boarding gate. Currently customers who are traveling within Europe will show their VeriFLY “green tick” and boarding pass to agents at the boarding. Customers can then avail of a prioritised VeriFLY boarding process which minimises queues, allowing for a more seamless customer experience.

Peter O’Neill, Chief Operations Officer at Aer Lingus said:

“With travel to the US opening up on 8th November, and more people planning trips abroad to reconnect with family, friends and colleagues we want to make the experience as seamless as possible. VeriFLY is key to this, as it ensures our customers are confident that they are complying with their destination’s COVID related travel requirements before they leave home.  While there are new and varied rules across different countries, the use of the VeriFLY app means customers can very easily upload their travel documents and have them checked and approved before they fly. At Aer Lingus we are committed to using technology to improve our customers’ travel experience.”

Clive Bourke, President EMEA and APAC at Daon added: “With travel to the US and elsewhere opening up, for the first time since this pandemic began, we will see some families and friends being re-united. Now people will be able to take those much-needed breaks and important in-person business connections will be re-ignited. VeriFLY simplifies travel for passengers – the app guides the traveller through all the pre-departure COVID requirements for a destination and lets them complete those steps for both themselves and any traveling companions before they leave for the airport. We’re delighted to work with Aer Lingus to help make travel as stress-free as possible for passengers while enabling both Aer Lingus and passengers to efficiently comply with all the international travel requirements related to COVID.”

All data uploaded to VeriFLY or through aerlingus.com is not retained by either organisation and is purged post travel, unless a government requires specific information to be temporarily kept for attestation or contact tracing, in which case it will be safeguarded for a limited time strictly in compliance with GDPR laws.

Aer Lingus has introduced a range of tools to ensure travel is easy and stress free for customers. In addition to VeriFLY, Aer Lingus introduced a new digital Travel Support Tool in August, designed to remove uncertainty regarding travel restrictions and entry requirements for all Aer Lingus destinations.  The interactive tool on aerlingus.com, powered by Sherpa, allows Aer Lingus customers to search destinations and retrieve up-to-date tailored travel information based on their specific circumstances including vaccination status, return travel and flight connection requirements.

Superpedestrian launches the ‘world’s safest and smartest escooters’ into Bordeaux as it expands into France as its sixth European market

Superpedestrian has launched a fleet of LINK shared e-scooters in Bordeaux. The forward-looking French city takes a pioneering approach to shared micromobility and is a fitting new home for the high-tech vehicle that has been labelled “the Volvo of e-scooters” (Boston Globe).

Superpedestrian rolled out 100 of its LINK e-scooters this week; the city permit limits all shared e-scooter operators to a maximum of 100 vehicles.

All riders will enjoy free unlocks until 30 October 2021. During the same period, when a rider loads €15 to their in-app wallet, Superpedestrian will contribute €30 – tripling a rider’s original contribution. (When a rider loads €5, Superpedestrian adds €5; when a rider loads €10, Superpedestrian adds €15.)  The standard per-minute ride fee is just €0.20.

The Superpedestrian service is available 24 hours per day, seven days per week. To rent a scooter, riders simply need to search for Superpedestrian’s LINK app in the Google or Apple app stores.

“I’m delighted to bring Superpedestrian’s superior technology and service to the citizens of Bordeaux,” comments Haya Verwoord Douidri, VP (strategy, policy and market expansion) at Superpedestrian. “We opened our first shared fleet in Europe just 12 months ago. Bordeaux marks our sixth country in Europe and our 32nd city on the Continent. It’s been an incredible journey so far and I look forward to serving French cities with our safe, accessible and sustainable service.”

Electrified operations and world-first safety features

Superpedestrian manages its Bordeaux fleet using 100% electric vans, across a deployment area of approximately 30sq km. This helps minimise environmental impact, which is important to Superpedestrian as a company that was certified as 100% carbon neutral earlier this year.

Superpedestrian is the company behind Pedestrian Defense, a novel technology unveiled in July 2021 that is the first in the world to prevent footpath riding by scooter riders in real-time, rather than just detect it. The system is currently undergoing road-testing across North America and Europe and will arrive in France in 2022.

LINK already features Superpedestrian’s patented Vehicle Intelligence (VI) system. This network of sensors, microprocessors and AI runs 1,000 vehicle health checks every second during a ride, modifies performance to avoid component failures (such as battery fires), notifies operations teams immediately if it is not upright (tip-over detection) and removes itself from service if it detects any one of 140 safety-critical conditions (including issues with electronics, battery, motor and brakes).

Simply put, VI is like having a full-scooter x-ray continuously, every time you go for a ride. This sets a new benchmark when it comes to shared mobility standards, and is as big a step forward in scooter safety as the seat belt was for cars.

Five reasons why Superpedestrian is great news for Bordeaux

  1. Fully carbon neutral. Every journey that Bordeaux riders choose to make on LINK scooters instead of using a car is one that helps combat the climate crisis. Because we design, engineer and manufacture our own vehicles, we minimise CO2 at every stage.
  2. Affordable for all. We are the first in our sector to truly promote accessibility programs. For example, in 2021 the Seattle Department of Transport reported that 15% of trips on LINK scooters start or end in low-income communities – 10 times the next nearest provider.
  3. Efficiency at heart. We designed the industry’s first onboard, AI-based predictive maintenance system. This reduces repairs, cuts waste, extends service life and increases fleet availability. Better maintenance efficiency is better for the planet.
  4. Protecting public spaces. LINK is unique in its ability to store geofence maps and commands onboard the scooter itself. With 24,000 discrete map zones and an enforcement time of just 0.7s, LINK protects pedestrians and riders alike.
  5. Wireless updates. Just like a Tesla car, LINK features an operating system that is updated remotely over-the-air. Each update brings better range, performance and safety features. Because LINK gets smarter and safer with age, Bordeaux will never have to wait for upgrades.

And four reasons why Bordeaux residents will love riding LINK scooters

  1. A superior ride. The LINK scooter is 20% wider and 9% longer than the industry average, with wider handlebars and robust suspension. This gives riders a far more stable riding experience, just as a downhill skier selects longer skis for more predictable handling.
  2. Long-range batteries. LINK scooters feature a 98km range battery, three times the industry average. This is perfect for commuters and shoppers, as well as the day trippers and tourists.
  3. High visibility in all weather. Super-bright LED lights front and rear that are always on, a rear light that brightens during braking, a unique LED ring light information system on the handlebar and safety-yellow paint scheme help make LINK riders clearly visible, any time of day or night.
  4. Sealed, secure, safe. Guarding against catastrophic battery failures is important in a city with  major waterways. Our battery is triple-sealed to protect against inclement weather, vandals and water immersion – and VI automatically shuts down all circuits in five nanoseconds if water immersion is detected.

Essential travel gadgets for your next trip

Following the loosening of travel restrictions, airlines and tour operators have reported a surge in ticket sales.  Although some people remain cautious due to the possibility of last minute changes to the traffic-light status, Eurostar has seen an increase in bookings to several European countries including France, Germany, Austria and Norway. EasyJet has also reported an increase in bookings to the Balearics and Canary Islands, Italy, Greece and Portugal since the government’s announcement.

Whether trying to make the most of the last few weeks of the summer holidays, fit in a short break, book a getaway for later this year or even 2022, or find the perfect Christmas gift for travel mad friends and family, here are eight helpful gadgets that will make that long awaited trip even more relaxing and enjoyable.

Check the Wifi Speed in Your Airbnb Listing Before You Book. #AirBnB #Wifi #Travel

As the growing flexibility to work and live from anywhere continues, being able to determine a listing’s wifi speed before booking is a must-have for digital nomads, remote workers, roadschoolers, traveling families, gamers, and creatives alike. This is a great idea and would be helpful if adopted in hotels and more as I am doing a staycation from next week for a few weeks and it would be nice to know what I am in for before I reach my destinations as hotel Wi-Fi can be dodgy but I do have some Airbnb stays booked too.

Guests want peace of mind that where they’re staying can support their connected needs — whether gaming and streaming on Twitch, Zooming with colleagues, or catching up with family on video chat, fast and stable internet is more important than ever.

While Hosts have been able to manually add wifi speeds to their listing pages for some time, we’re now providing an easy and efficient in-app solution to allow them to measure the wifi speed in their listing using the Airbnb app.

Hosts can test their listing’s connection speed right within the Airbnb app, and easily have their wifi speed information posted on their listing page, making their listings more appealing to guests looking for connected stays.

This feature uses M-Lab’s open source software to measure download speeds and we’ve begun rolling out in-app internet speed testing in the US and we will expand globally in the coming weeks. Hosts can learn more by visiting their Help Center.

New App Provides New Visitor Experience At Cliffs Of Moher

A free interactive mobile app has today (29 July 2021) been launched for those visiting or planning to visit the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience in County Clare.

Pictured above launching the new Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience app at the Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, Ireland (l-r) Leonard Cleary, Director of Service, Rural Development and Tourism, Clare County Council; Bobby Kerr, Chairperson of the Board of the Cliffs of Moher Centre Ltd.; and Geraldine Enright, Director of the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience.

With free Wi-Fi available throughout the main visitor centre building and viewing platforms, visitors will be able to access a range of information about the Cliffs of Moher via their smartphone.

The app also contains 13 audio tracks narrated by Conor Tallon and featuring contributions from people with an intrinsic knowledge of the rich history, geology, flora and fauna of Ireland’s most visited natural attraction.

Bobby Kerr, Chairperson of the Board of the Cliffs of Moher Centre Ltd., commented, “A key feature of the new app is to educate visitors and to significantly improve visitor experience while on-site, but also in the pre- and post-stages of their visit.  It will be effective in providing information to helping guests find their way and to make the most out of their day.”

Leonard Cleary, Director of Service, Rural Development and Tourism, Clare County Council, added, “We are continually seeking new ways to further enhance the overall visitor experience at the Cliffs of Moher.  The app, which is free to download, is educational and it also allows us to promote what the rest of County Clare has to offer visitors.”

Geraldine Enright, Director of the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience, said, “The launch of this interactive app ties in with our sustainability ethos as it will greatly reduce the amount of information brochures being distributed on site.  Everything from a map of the attraction to the weather forecast and items of local interest is there on the app.”

“The audio tracks featured on the app will provide context and extra life to what visitors are experiencing during their trip to the Cliffs of Moher,” explained Ms. Enright.  “Our staff provide local insight on the myths, history and the biodiversity of the site, while the busking tradition at the site and the traditional music of North Clare and the wider county also features.”

The app, which has been developed by Digisoft.tv in conjunction with Cork-based Inhand Guides Smart Audio, is available to download from the Apple App Store and Android Playstore.

The Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience is a signature discovery point on Fáilte Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, a main Geosite of the Burren & Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Geopark, a Special Protected Area for Birds and Wildlife and is a wholly owned tourism asset of Clare County Council.  Visit www.cliffsofmoher.ie for more details.
