Expleo unveils world-first anti-smishing solution for banks with Permanent TSB with new in-app feature

Expleo, a global technology, engineering and consulting service provider, today unveils ExpleoProtectUS, a world-first anti-smishing solution that alerts banking customers to fraudulent text messages. The software is today being launched as part of a new security feature within the Permanent TSB mobile banking app, ‘PTSB Protect’, which helps to prevent customers from falling victim to fraudulent scams.

Smishing – phishing-style scams that are carried out via SMS – has become commonplace for banking customers today. Retail banks, along with global law enforcement, have warned banking customers to be on high alert as fraudsters contact customers via SMS, tricking them into thinking they are being contacted by a trustworthy source – such as their bank – before extracting sensitive account information from them. Recent figures from the Banking and Payments Federation of Ireland (BPFI) found that incidents of payment fraud and scams cost Irish consumers €85m last year, an increase of 8.8% compared with 2021.

Permanent TSB has introduced ‘PTSB Protect’, a new feature to its banking app which will help to prevent customers from falling victim to fraudulent scams. It has integrated ExpleoProtectUS with its mobile banking app as it continues to roll out a series of measures and technology solutions to protect customers from fraudsters. The solution will inform the customer when it has detected a fraudulent SMS and take appropriate countermeasures.

ExpleoProtectUS is a world-first that can be integrated with any bank’s mobile app and works on both iOS and Android operating systems. The software uses AI and intelligent systems to determine when a customer has received a text message containing a fraudulent link. Customers must consent to the software checking their text messages, however, no information is captured or shared by the bank or Expleo.

Phil Codd, Managing Director, Expleo Ireland, said:

“As a global leader in technology solutions which solve today’s business challenges, we have a responsibility to ensure that what we do is not only good for businesses but good for society too. ExpleoProtectUS originated with this belief in mind at our first Hackathon and has been developed to provide a simple solution to a global problem. The team immediately saw its societal value; to protect the most vulnerable members of society, who are typically older and less tech-savvy.”

Brian Kennedy, Head of Digital and Innovation – Ireland, Expleo, said:

“ExpleoProtectUS is the only anti-smishing fraud solution designed to install directly on end-user mobile phones and has the potential to improve lives worldwide. We are delighted that Permanent TSB immediately understood and embraced its potential to make a difference. We hope our collaboration in this area will not only set an example for the Irish banking sector, but on a global scale, too.”

Peter Vance, Chief Operating Officer Permanent TSB, said

“Attempts to defraud customers through criminal activity has increased significantly over the last number of years. Our own research suggests that 75% of Irish consumers have experienced an attempt of fraud with 27% falling victim to it. With scams getting more sophisticated, consumers need to continue to be on their guard at all times. By introducing PTSB Protect as a new line of defence to our mobile app, we can now directly identify the source of this activity and help protect our customers before their accounts can become compromised. Financial fraud is a significant threat and it is often being targeted at groups that may think they are less vulnerable, so we’re delighted to partner with Expleo Ireland on this world-first anti-smishing solution”

Developed for the banking industry, ExpleoProtectUS can also be to protect customers and end users across the financial services, insurance, retail and government/public services sectors.

Tech Review – FINAL ZE8000 true wireless earphones

The FINAL ZE8000 true wireless earphones are a different shaped pair of earphones that stand out with an unusual shape and I like this as it is something different and if you don’t try you will never know as design can only go so far but there stand out from the rest and many have asked questions as to what they are and who makes them.

Being shaped differently does not mean quality lacks elsewhere right? They fit the same as any other earbud but have a different outer frame so to speak and once fitted with the right tips they will not budge from your ears they give a great seal and blocks out much of the outside world. The texture of the earphones and looks are also nice with a matte finish and they look great some folk even said they look wet.

How they sound though with 8K thrown in there is important and they sound great really crisp and clear and a tad on the bright side but you have an EQ option in the app which could have offer some more however for me they did the job and for all your movies music and games you will not be disappointed by the sound quality, calls also great crisp and clear for me and on the other end. Highs lows and mids are fine and any genre tested in my usual test run, they feel centred more so and overall a great listening experience but your source of music is important here. No lag latency no distortion or tinny sound when maxed out either which is how I listen to my earbuds and decent enough ANC.

There are four listening modes available for the ZE8000, all of which have their own benefits and clear intended scenarios for the user:

  • Noise Cancelling Mode – Eliminates ambient noise and allows users to concentrate on the music.
  • Wind-Cut Mode – Significantly eliminates wind noise captured by the microphones when there is a lot of ambient air movement.
  • Ambient Sound Mode – Seamlessly blends music and ambient sound, allowing users to be aware of their surroundings while listening to music.
  • Voice Through Mode – Ambient sound is prioritized over music, allowing for clear conversations without removing the earphones from the ears.
Overall a quality pair of earbuds with a fresh new look over the industry standard these days and will gather attention when wearing out.

Tech Review – StoryPhones & StoryShield – Headphones for Kids – Disney Edition

The StoryPhones & StoryShield Storytelling Headphones for Kids is a great idea and simple product for you child to listen to audio without a phone or tablet in their hand keeping them free from harms way which these days has become an issue and this will be a great idea for Christmas or a gift.

The presentation is also excellent giving you plenty of details on the box itself and there is an app to go with it which we delve into in the video review below, it is simple to get going you can connect via cable or bluetooth and you can sign into your Wi-Fi and a one time process, the store has lots of other offers there to so check it out.

The controls are simple to use for any child with volume controls on the app to pick from, there is no real control on the app as to what you can do but these are on the headphones and simple to use, the disc that sits on one of the cups also acts as a control to skip and reverse and taking it off pauses which is neat, these can also be customised and you can upload your own audio which is really neat. I did find the magnet a little week but when your child is sitting down they should be fine.

These are comfortable to wear too and light and seem robust enough for kids and should last though the maintaining them might be an issue as time goes on keeping them clean with the Blue and Pink colours available but hey kids will be kids.

Overall these are a great product with crisp clean audio for any child to listen too and better again it keeps them off mobile devices which is not good for their health.

The APP

StoryPhones & StoryShield

StoryPhones are the first smart, portable wireless audio entertainment device for children combining high-performance headphones with an internet-connected content player. Access stories by simply popping a StoryShield disc into the StoryPhones. It will then automatically download the story into the headphone’s memory and start playing. After the initial download, it will play the content independent of any network or other device.

Curated Content

Discover the StoryPhones library full of carefully curated content, suitable for children aged 3 and up, that entertains and educates with audio stories, music and more. This careful selection allows parents to relax, knowing it’s not necessary to monitor what children are listening to. Over the coming years, ONANOFF will continue this ongoing collaboration with Disney to build an enchanting collection of magical stories for kids to enjoy. In addition to Disney, other exciting licensing collaborations will be added to bring even more characters to the range of StoryShields.

Record a Personalized Story with PlayShield

StoryPhones also offer the option of recording personalized stories, in a loved one’s voice, through the mobile app, creating a customized StoryShield called PlayShield. This way, users can record family stories and share the ones that shaped an individual’s life with generations to come. It’s also a brilliant way to stay connected with loved ones far away. Even though grandparents live in another country, a child can hear a bedtime story read by grandma and when away, or at work, parents can soothe children with a pre-recorded lullaby.

Relax with ZenShield

A StoryShield, aptly named ZenShield, contains relaxing audio profiles to help overstimulated kids calm down, relax and even sleep. The shield includes a collection of pink noises, from piano to ocean waves, from rain drops to the original and exclusive RoRo Sound.

Audio Promotes Literacy and Improves Comprehension

By listening to stories, children are encouraged to increase learning capabilities. 85% of what is learnt, is learnt by listening and listening to audio increases reading accuracy by 52%. It also improves comprehension by 76%, providing context and helping children decode words and understand the text better. Listening to audio also increases motivation by 67%. Taking children away from the screens of smart devices can help children sleep better and focus better at school.

More people can now make money on YouTube with the expansion of its Partner Program to cater smaller creators

YouTube opened up today a new tier in its partnerships program (YPP), enabling eligible creators to activate fan-funding features known as Super Chat, Super Thanks, Super Stickers, and channel memberships in Ireland.

“Creators are the lifeblood of YouTube and we’re invested in making it the most rewarding place for them — creatively, emotionally and financially. We hope that this lower eligibility criteria will help support creators who are early in their YouTube journey, paving the way for a new generation of content creators,” said Julie Dilger, Google Ireland Head of External Communications.

According to a study by Radius, a majority of creators in the Middle East and North Africa, France, Germany, and the UK surveyed in 2023 say YouTube offers more creative freedom and more ways to create than other platforms. In Ireland, over 3,000 channels have more than 10,000 subscribers, an increase of more than 15%, year over year.

These new fan-funding features will be available to creators in Ireland with:

  • 500 subscribers

  • 3 public uploads in the last 90 days

  • Either 3,000 watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days

  • No active Community Guidelines strike

Community engagement and connecting with viewers is at the core of these new fan-funding features. Super Chat & Super Stickers will allow viewers to purchase brightly colored, pinned chat messages and stickers during live streams and Premieres hosted by creators. Fans can support their favorite creators and stand out from the crowd, while creators get to identify and connect with their top fans + access new revenue.

Super Thanks is an easy way to give back and show appreciation for creators and their content. Viewers have a fun way to show support and stand out in the comments section with colorful comments, while creators can feel the love for their content with every contribution and connect directly with fans.

As for Channel memberships, these will allow viewers to join a creator’s channel through monthly payments and, giving paying viewers members-only perks like badges, emoji, and other goods. Creators can access these new features through the “Earn” tab in YouTube Studio where they will see if they’re eligible to apply for this new tier. Automatic emails will also be sent once a creator qualifies to apply. It can take up to four weeks for the feature to rollout to 100% of creators.

The YouTube Partnerships Programs was one of the first revenue-sharing models on the internet. Creators with more than 1,000 subscribers and have 4,000 watch hours in the last 365 days (or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days) will continue to have access to the revenue share from ads and YouTube Premium. Fan-Funding features were announced at YouTube’s Made On YouTube keynote last year.

Tech Review – Otterbox Defender XT case for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5

Recently we checked out the Thin Flex case for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 which is fine however this case from Otterbox the Defender XT is the better of the two and will cost you a hefty 60 euros if that is a price you are prepared to pay then go for it in short.

The case offers better grip than the Thin Flex case with covered ports grips on the sides and is notably better in the hand when it comes to grip, it also works with wireless charging which is great and offers more protection on the front outer display, there is not much of a lip on the device when opened out on the open screen so you would want to be a bit careful if you leave phone open face down but everywhere else is protected very well overall and for me is the better of their two cases on offer right now, stay tuned for more case coming up shortly and check out the video review below

  • Rugged hinge articulates smoothly with the phone to guard vulnerable area and provides a finger grip space when open
  • Port covers block dust and dirt from ports

  • Lanyard attachment built into case
  • Compatible with wireless charging and PowerShare
  • Made with more than 50% recycled material
  • Hinge provides a grip space when fully open

Insert Coin to Continue: The Evolution of Payment Systems in Video Gaming

Video games have come a long way since the days of arcades and early home consoles. Alongside the advancements in graphics, gameplay mechanics, and storytelling, there has been a parallel evolution in how we pay for and access these virtual adventures.

From the simple act of dropping a coin into an arcade machine to the complex world of microtransactions and subscription services, the payment systems in video gaming have undergone a fascinating transformation.

The Arcade Era: Insert Coin to Play

The arcade era, which began in the late 1970s and peaked in the 1980s and early 1990s, was the genesis of video game payment systems. In arcades, players would insert coins (usually quarters) into a slot on the game cabinet to play. This pay-per-play model was straightforward and immediate, allowing players to enjoy games in short bursts. The challenge was to master the game’s mechanics within a limited time frame, often leading to fierce competition among players.

This model encouraged game developers to create titles that were easy to pick up and play but difficult to master. The quicker a player lost, the more coins they would need to insert to continue playing, providing a steady stream of revenue for arcade owners.

Pay by phone bill deposits

In the ever-evolving landscape of video game payment systems, one of the most significant and convenient developments in recent years has been the introduction of phone bill casino deposits. This innovation has revolutionised how we pay for gaming and expanded the realm of online gambling and mobile gaming. Phone bill deposits, also known as “pay by phone” or “mobile billing” options, provide a seamless and user-friendly way for players to fund their gaming accounts.

As tech keeps improving, phone bill deposits are becoming smarter and more convenient and mobile casino sites like JeffBet now offer easy phone billing payment options offering a number phone billing payment solutions. With the integration of biometric authentication, such as fingerprint and facial recognition, mobile payments are becoming even more secure and convenient.

The Digital Age: Downloadable Content and Microtransactions

The digital age brought significant changes to payment systems in video gaming. Instead of purchasing physical copies of games, players began downloading them directly to their consoles or PCs. This shift paved the way for the introduction of downloadable content (DLC) and microtransactions, making it easier than ever to pay for games.

DLC allowed developers to extend the lifespan of their games by offering additional content, such as new levels, characters, and items, for a separate fee. Microtransactions, on the other hand, allowed players to make small in-game purchases, often for cosmetic items or power-ups. These microtransactions proved highly profitable for developers, as they encouraged players to spend small amounts of money frequently.

While some players appreciated the ability to customise their characters and enhance their gameplay experience, others felt that microtransactions created a pay-to-win environment where those who spent more money had a significant advantage.

The Battle Royale Phenomenon

The battle royale genre, popularised by games like “Fortnite” and “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds,” introduced a unique approach to payment systems. These games are typically free to play, with revenue generated by selling in-game items and battle passes. Battle passes offer a tiered system of rewards that players can unlock by playing the game or purchasing the pass.

This model encourages players to invest time and money into the game to unlock exclusive cosmetics and rewards. It has been incredibly successful, with some battle royale games generating billions of dollars in revenue.

The Subscription Renaissance

In recent years, subscriptions have made a resurgence in the gaming industry. Services like Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Now, and Apple Arcade offer players access to a library of games for a monthly fee. These services provide a cost-effective way for players to enjoy a wide variety of games without purchasing each title individually.

Additionally, cloud gaming platforms like Google Stadia and NVIDIA GeForce NOW are exploring subscription-based models that allow players to stream games directly to their devices, eliminating the need for high-end gaming hardware.

The Future of Payment Systems in Gaming

As technology advances, gaming payment systems are likely to evolve further. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) gaming experiences may introduce new monetisation methods. Blockchain and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) could also play a role in the future of in-game item ownership and trading.

One thing is clear: the landscape of video game payment systems will continue to adapt to the preferences of players and the possibilities of technology. While debates about the ethics of microtransactions and the value of subscription services persist, the fundamental goal remains the same — to provide engaging and immersive gaming experiences to players worldwide, however, they choose to pay for them.

Conclusion

In the end, the evolution of payment systems in video gaming reflects the broader changes in technology and consumer preferences. From the days of inserting coins into arcade machines to the current era of subscription services and microtransactions, the gaming industry has continuously innovated to ensure both profitability and player satisfaction.

As we look ahead, it will be fascinating to see how emerging technologies shape the future of video game monetisation and what new experiences await gamers in the years to come.
