Survey Reveals Irish SME Resources Overwhelmed by HR Requirements, Lack of Suitable Tech to Blame

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Ireland & the UK feel that HR requirements are overwhelming vital resources, according to a survey commissioned by Meath-based HR tech company HR Duo.

In its survey of over 300 SMEs it was found that almost two-thirds (64%) say that trying to keep on top of all elements of HR in their business is extremely challenging. But despite the difficulties in the current business environment, just 10% say their HR function is likely to decrease in the next 12 months, with 45% predicting an increase. This is leading to a perfect storm, where HR requirements are continually increasing while a majority of SMEs feel that they are already overextended.

The survey identified that the lack of suitable HR technology for SMEs is central to their struggle to manage the HR workload. Three quarters (74%) feel that automation of manual tasks would be of major benefit to their business, with 66% saying that there are lots of paper processes in need of digitisation.

Yet roughly the same amount (67%) feel that addressing HR challenges is very different in SMEs compared to large organisations, meaning that existing options don’t address their needs. Indeed a majority (60%) of SMEs feel that HR tech platforms generally are geared towards the needs of larger companies, and adapting these to the needs of SME would be too onerous, with 70% believing they need a lot of expertise to set up and use effectively.

The result is time and resources wasted by SMEs in conducting routine HR tasks, which would be better utilised running and growing the business.

Jerome Forde, Founder and CEO of HR Duo, commented, “SMEs are the driving force of the Irish economy, employing 1.19 million people – roughly two-thirds of the total workforce – and generating almost half of the turnover in the private sector (source: ISME). But so much time and resources are being wasted on outdated manual tasks, meaning less opportunity to grow the business and hire new people.”

Unsurprisingly, two-thirds (64%) of SMEs said that increased productivity through better use of automation and tech is a priority for them over the next 12 months. Recent entrants to the market are making this more of a possibility for SMEs and challenging incumbent brands that prioritise larger organisations.

Jerome continued, “From speaking to SMEs around the country, it is clear that here is a huge need for a simple but innovative software solution that works for them straight out of the box – time is critical for them and they need a service tailored to their needs. With this in mind we developed HR Duo, a cloud-based platform that automates 80% of routine HR tasks, with the remaining 20% serviced by an expert team to help with more complex issues. unlocking capacity that can be better used in their business.”

HR Duo’s easy to use, low cost, and ‘always on’ proprietary software make it ideal for its target market of SMEs with 50-1,000 employees, acting as a bolt-on support to HR personnel, or indeed as a HR back-up for companies without a dedicated HR department. With subscriptions starting from as little as €10 per employee per month, the service can be scaled up or down as the business requires, with no lengthy, onerous contracts.

While HR tech solutions tailored to SMEs are now finally available, this does not mean they intent to reduce or eliminate HR capabilities. Indeed, feedback received during the survey revealed that SMEs don’t want a simple ‘set and forget’ solution – instead, there is a strong desire for a system to build institutional knowledge, with 85% wanting a HR platform that adds to their knowledge base. What SMEs desire is not a silver bullet, but a long-term partner in helping with their HR needs, freeing them up to build and scale their businesses into the future.

Survey Details

Research conducted by Heads Up Research & Insight (www.headsupinsight.com) throughout April 2023. Final survey response was 305 people who have influence in terms of HR decisions and/or resourcing the HR function in SMES between 30 and 500 employees in size. Maximum margin of error is +/- 6%.

Tech Review – TOZO Openbuds with unique dual axis design

The TOZO Openbuds are the latest product on offer from the company and moving on from the previous OpenReal which we tested out not so long ago and they were impressive, this kind of style and the previous are now getting popular of late and expect to see many more plus the countless models we have tried lately from other brands too.

Presentation is nice once again and on point with their product portfolio and the case you get here is on the larger side than most earbuds, these would have the bigger case like all open ears and is fine, nicely finished case and a nice snap shut for security, the magnets inside are not the strongest but this is common with such products.

OK so these are somewhat different though in several ways and look cool albeit a little on the large side some might find, for me size never really bothers me anyway it is how the sound look and feel, these have an extra trick up their sleeve though with a dual axis design that allows better adjustment than what you find out there today and this works well.

As mentioned the size, they are larger than earbuds but on par with open ear designed earbuds and fit well and certainly will not fall off the ears after my testing indoors outdoors cycling and the gym. If you are one to use more than one device we also have dual connectivity here too which is excellent for me as it is a daily requirement for me with calls for work and so on and they are clear on these with no issues both ends.

TOZO Openbuds out of case -techbuzzireland

TOZO says what you read below in the quote and they are right, the sound is the best in open ear I have tried to date and that’s plenty of pairs I have tested by the way and as this is my 3rd or 4th product now from the company they are on my radar from here on. The sound is excellent decently loud highs lows and mids great, nice bass no distortion or lag latency noted either and with their app you have control and the touch controls work really well. These are really close to earbuds sound quality all round.

Experience superior sound quality and noise isolation with TOZO ORIGX algorithm-powered headphones. Enjoy more focused sound and stronger bass, while preventing sound leakage. With the added convenience of the TOZO APP, easily switch between five different EQ settings for the ultimate personalized listening experience.

Tech Review – SOUNDPEATS RunFree Open-ear Sport Headphones

The SOUNDPEATS RunFree Open-ear sport headphones are the next installment after the RunFree Lite we recently reviewed here and they are have improved greatly it has to be said, these type of headphones are now a trend and you may notice more people wearing them when out jogging or in the gym.

One thing with these is they are very light and very comfortable to wear and robust, you can connect to two devices at once which for me is important and I am sure many others out there and there is of course a good connection with Bluetooth 5.3 on board.

Sound is what people want to know more about with the likes of these headphones and I am happy to report it is good, loud and clear and so are calls. You have 16.2mm drivers on board which packs a punch and for me a decent audio experience only to be boosted by the SOUNDPEATS app which I think is pretty decent. See photo below for features in the app..

On the Audio experience they pack a punch it has to be said and with and for me are loud with nice bass and more. Within the app you have control of what you want out of the headphones and there is plenty of presets to mess around with, ensure you do the hearing test for the best results.

The controls are simple to use and all you require is there you can skip and reverse tracks higher and lower the volume, access your voice assistant and play and pause tracks, game mode and call management is also present on the slightly raised keys on the right side of the headphones.

Software can be downloaded to enhance the features via the install OBSBOT WebCam from https://www.obsbot.com/download, (If not downloaded basic features of AI Tracking, Gesture Control, Voice Control, etc, will work) Once downloaded the featured via voice, manual or remote can be enabled or disabled.

Voice command:

The OBSBOT Tiny 2 has voice controls which can turn on the Camera or put it to sleep. When using the voice controls the language used has to match exactly as per the instructions in the manual. It was noticed while this is an excellent feature, on occasion, this had to be repeated to ensure the voice was correctly picked up. The Features like track me when enabled via the AI are excellent in following the presenter around the room, with the option to change to go to a pre-stored position. This feature worked very well when the camera was put

OBSBOT Tiny Smart Remote 2

The Remote combines a presentation clicker and webcam remote control to control a multi-cam setup and preset positions.

Privacy Mode:

The Camera when disabled via the voice command “Sleep tiny”  or via the remote turns the camera via the 2-axle gimble to tilt down the camera to the ground ensuring privacy is observed when not in use. Again, simple but effective use of its technology.

Warranty:  This is a disappointment with a 1-year warranty as standard.

Conclusion:

Typically the word Tiny would indicate that this is smaller than the norm and lacks a punch for a product being of limited feature, How wrong could you be in terms of judging a book by its cover, The Tiny 2 came with the simple things done well, a USB C to C connection, an adapter to use USB A to your laptop as required, and a storage case. It’s small and lightweight, making it easy to transport.

As an extra touch the Smart Remote 2 combines a presentation clicker and webcam remote allowing for a multitude of options, The supplied stand looks like a simple piece of metal but expands to a proper tripod stand allowing the adaption of its use from connected to a laptop to be used in a boardroom or taken to a presentation when out and about.

The kit has many features, Video Quality, Auto Focusing, Dual Native ISO via the bigger sensor  – 1/1.5’’ CMOS and Beauty Mode, ( smooths your skin and brightens your eyes),

The  AI Features, are Auto Tracking with Auto Zoom, and Hands-free Voice Control one of my favourite features via its algorithm is  Hand Tracking. This allows the camera to follow your arm in any direction required,  thus focussing on a specific area or product as part of a presentation, this could then be changed to “Follow me” via voice command. The camera  Video Resolution of 4K@30fps, MJPEG, H264  with a 4x digital zoom would be sufficient for most users.

The tiny is like a Swiss army knife of features allowing multiple uses, where manually control the camera, gesture, voice or via the remote.
