Fairphone, the Dutch social enterprise building a market for ethical smartphones, has announced that the Fairphone models 3 and 3+ will be receiving an update to Android 13. Beta version roll-out has started today, with all users receiving the update by the end of June. The new update will take users of the Fairphone 3 and the Fairphone 3+ from Android 11 directly to Android 13.
This update to Android 13 is an example of Fairphone’s policy of providing software support for its devices for as long as possible. Since support by the device’s chipset vendor has expired, Fairphone 3(+) software is now maintained directly by the Fairphone team who assessed the feasibility of updating the device to Android 13 right away. Fairphone has previously done the same with the recently discontinued Fairphone 2, skipping Android 8 and updating the device to Android 9 instead.
The Fairphone 3 was originally launched in 2019 with Android 9, the upgraded version, Fairphone 3+, followed in 2020. Both models are guaranteed to continue to receive software support until at least August 2024. However, Fairphone aims to support the phones for even longer, until 2026. This is a first for the Android ecosystem. Fairphone wants to push the industry to act more responsibly and maintain phones longer.
Agnes Crepet, Head of Software Longevity at Fairphone, states:

By providing Android updates for our older models, we are going against industry norms and want to ensure that owners of the Fairphone 3 can also enjoy using their phones for longer. The number of 5G ready phones is growing rapidly. According to a MoneyTransfers analysis, they grew from 251 to 401 in 2021. That represented a 60% jump. However in Ireland 5G has been a failure with little uptake despite the premium rates been dropped and as a 5G customer myself I find it a waste of money and hardly have a 5G signal.
Jonathan Merry, MoneyTransfers’ CEO, has shared his thoughts on the findings. He said, “We expect the number of 5G ready phones to grow over the coming months. Companies are either releasing or announcing the production of new models. Besides, the technology behind these devices has improved since their initial release. So it’s no surprise that sales are rising rapidly.”
Why 5G?
The ballooning internet traffic is fuelling the demand for enhanced data transmission capacities. 5G tech betters 4G/LTE data transmission by up to 20 times. It’ll also increase the connection density by 10X that of the current tech.
That’ll support nearly a million connections per square kilometer.
Moreover, the tech eases HD media streaming in overpopulated or poorly covered areas. Again, it’ll facilitate the integrated management of a myriad of devices. Further, it’ll lower battery usage, cost, and battery consumption.
Other areas that’ll benefit from the technology include machine learning and the internet of things. These two have wide applications in our lives. In America alone, 5G tech is expected to impact the economy by nearly $484B.
Who’s leading in 5G adoption?
According to a Viavi solutions study, about 2,000 cities in 72 nations have 5G connectivity. China leads ten other nations with the most 5G ready sites. So you can enjoy the technology in up to 356 cities in the country.
The U.S comes in second with 296 cities, and the Philippines rounds off the top three. Here you can enjoy the technology in 98 of her cities.

We’ve crunched the numbers to help you reduce the amount of money you lose from depreciation and help you make smarter choices for the environment too.
Of all the 5G phones released, the iPhone 12 Pro, one of Apple’s first 5G-enabled models, managed to retain its value the best in the six months after release, dropping by just 32%. Samsung’s first 5G-enabled phone release, the Samsung 10 5G, lost a higher 55% of its value in the first six months.
The 10 phones which held the most of their value at 12 months are all iPhones – making them the better investment for people who are likely to trade their device back in every year to upgrade.
The iPhone 11 has held onto its value the best, depreciating by 33% in the first 12 months. The iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 8 Plus take the 2nd and 3rd positions, losing 36% and 38% of their value respectively after 12 months.
The OnePlus 7T and the Samsung S7 Edge are the best performing non-Apple phones, losing 50% and 52% of their value in their first 12 months on sale.
The Huawei Mate 30 Pro was the worst performing phone in our 2021 report, losing a huge 87% of its value in the first year. The Huawei P20 and OnePlus 8 were the next worst performing phones, losing 84% and 83% of their value after just 12 months.
Apple’s worst performing model was the iPhone X, which lost 51% of its value 12 months after launch. The Samsung models which depreciated most in the first 12 months were Samsung Flip, which lost a substantial 83% of its value, and the Samsung Fold, which lost 75%.

Several reasons actually why i think this will be a success story.
Been involved in mobile tech near 20 years now and many years experience at repairs myself this offers a solution to a big problem.
Screen damage is a daily occurrence,often the case the screen is the most expensive part of the phone and in some cases more than the phone itself which would be put down to a non economical repair,same applies to water damage.
Most phones now have delicate housing,the iphone in particular with glass front and back on older models,screens are also tough on most phones now using corning gorilla glass but this is not bulletproof nor unbreakable by any means,in fact its pot luck if the screen breaks when the phone is dropped from any normal level,ie shirt pocket or at arms length.
Been a multiforum support member for near ten years i see this complaint on a daily basis as to people complaining about the screen breaking and having shatter-proof glass,such as corning glass.
If you have no insurance this can be a very costly expense to fix with screen repair costing up to €250 maybe more on some phablets it often leads people to search elsewhere to find a cheaper alternative.Phablets are the in thing now, big screens,bezels getting thinner to give real screen estate,this makes them more prone to breakage.Tablets are the same they are more clunky and more so prone to damage,tablets are growing at a fast rate and we like to have them on our laps at home watching TV etc, im sure many have let them fall from knees etc etc
