Dell Technologies Helps Communications Service Providers Transform to Capture Opportunities at the Edge

Building on its vast experience helping companies digitally transform, Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) is anchoring an open, cloud-native telecom ecosystem—with infrastructure and solutions, industry partners and a new innovation lab—to put communications service providers (CSPs) on the fast track for innovation and revenue growth.

As organizations across all industries look to drive new value with edge technologies, IDC projects that the number of new operational processes deployed on edge infrastructure will grow from less than 20% today to over 90% in 20241. CSPs are aiming to transform their businesses and networks to support this enormous growth and benefit from the edge opportunities ahead.

“Telecom companies need ways to mitigate the risk and complexities associated with evolving their network infrastructure,” said Dennis Hoffman, senior vice president and general manager, Dell Technologies Telecom Systems Business. “An open, cloud-native approach is the answer to quickly capture this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and move beyond the hype of 5G to the reality of a resilient next-generation network that creates more opportunities for operators, industries of all kinds and communities around the world.”

Dell Technologies is creating open software solutions and services designed for the unique requirements of the telecom industry. Collaborating with Dell, CSPs can use these new solutions to embrace software-defined industry standards, simplify integration and management of data at the edge and capture new revenue opportunities. Dell Technologies is in a unique position to help CSPs transform—backed by an industry leading IT infrastructure; secure, global supply chain; and IT services with more than 60,000 dedicated professionals and partners in more than 170 countries.

“Network operators are making critical investments in updating their networks for 5G and re-evaluating their legacy systems,” said Daryl Schoolar, practice lead at Omdia. “As communication networks disaggregate, an open ecosystem of hardware and software vendors is forming to support this transformation. Communications service providers need strategic partners to help organize the ecosystem, provide validated solutions and take responsibility for deployment and operating outcomes. With its experience in digital transformation, IT infrastructure, services, and global network of partners, we are seeing Dell make significant investments in being this missing link supporting CSPs as they build modern mobile communications networks.”

Modernizing to an open, cloud-native network

As telecom networks disaggregate and move toward delivering powerful infrastructure and applications at the edge, the number of components to deploy and manage across geographic locations grows exponentially. Dell Technologies is launching a cloud-native network infrastructure with a full stack of open, scalable carrier-grade server and software solutions to simplify and accelerate this journey. Today, CSPs can use Dell Technologies validated reference architectures to deploy full-stack telecommunications solutions from partners, including VMware and Red Hat, with optimal Dell hardware, software and services.

With Project Metalweaver, Dell Technologies is taking this cloud-native infrastructure farther to support the need to scale across broad geographies. Project Metalweaver is a flexible software solution enabling CSPs to easily select, autonomously deploy and manage thousands of multi-vendor compute, network and storage devices across multiple locations with this flexible software solution. Open and on-demand resources can be scaled simply to multi-premises, backed by Dell Technologies global support and services.

Dell Technologies is also introducing new reference architectures to span telecommunications edge, core and Open RAN environments. The reference architectures provide full stack guidance, deployment options and operational recommendations for specific use cases to help CSPs quickly and efficiently deploy applications and services enterprises demand. Through Dell Financial Services flexible payment solutions, CSPs can choose flexible payment solutions for the products and services they need to transform or build their networks2.

Building upon Dell Technologies infrastructure foundation solutions with VMware Telco Cloud Platform and Red Hat OpenShift, CSPs initially will be able to deploy:

  • Core software solutions from Affirmed Networks.
  • Private network solutions from CommScope RUCKUS.
  • Multi-access edge computing (MEC) solutions with Intel Smart Edge.
  • Dell Technologies is collaborating with Mavenir to develop 5G Open RAN software with Dell EMC PowerEdge XR11 ruggedized servers.
  • Core software solutions from Nokia.

New telecom lab to spark 5G innovation, capture edge revenue opportunities

Dell Technologies is introducing its Open Telecom Ecosystem Lab to create a place where it can work with its partners and customers to explore and collaborate on future telecom technologies and applications. Hosted at the company’s headquarters in Round Rock, Texas, the carrier-grade testing environment offers CSPs the ability to mirror customer locations and test multi-vendor, real-world solutions and services. New solutions can be incubated in the lab, then quickly brought to market, allowing CSPs to create new enterprise edge services and applications. Dell’s technology partner program provides engineering resources and project management support to design, build, market and sell network solutions and services.

Additional quotes

“Nokia is excited to see Dell Technologies take this important step of extending its ecosystem. 5G and the digitization of industries requires nothing short of such an approach, and we look forward to continue the joint effort to create more open choices and options that can be used with Nokia’s leading 5G core technology in order to deliver better outcomes for our customers,” said Ron Haberman, chief technology officer, Cloud and Network Services, Nokia.

“Red Hat believes that the future of edge computing and 5G is rooted in open hybrid cloud,” said Honoré LaBourdette, vice president, Industry Verticals, Telco, Media & Entertainment, Red Hat. “Through close collaboration with Dell Technologies over the course of two decades, we are helping companies achieve more from their networks by building more secure 5G-enabled edge systems using Red Hat OpenShift. As the service provider landscape continues to evolve, we look forward to working with Dell Technologies and its expanding partner ecosystem to provide flexible, open and scalable solutions for joint customers.”

“The modernization and cloudification of the network—from core to RAN to edge—gives CSPs two powerful tools: choice and control. Choice to work with a broad ecosystem of VMware Ready for Telco Cloud certified partners and control over how they deliver and monetize 5G services that provide improved security, reliability and performance at both the provider and enterprise edge. VMware Telco Cloud Platform, running on top of Dell Technologies’ infrastructure foundation, enables this open ecosystem and puts CSPs in the driver’s seat of their digital transformation,” commented Sanjay Uppal, senior vice president and general manager, service provider and edge business unit, VMware.

Nokia introduces new additions to industry-leading small cells portfolio. #Nokia

Nokia today announced the launch of new additions to its industry-leading AirScale small cells portfolio for premium indoor and outdoor 5G coverage. Nokia’s new products include enhanced hardware and support the majority of frequency bands, including requirements for C-Band spectrum in the U.S.

Nokia’s new AirScale micro Remote Radio Heads (mRRH) deliver premium outdoor 5G coverage, enhancing both capacity and coverage in dense urban environments. Nokia’s mRRHs allow operators to cost-effectively densify their networks, especially where the deployment of a macro cell would not be appropriate. Micro RRH have small footprints and offer increased deployment options, as well as lower power consumption and so lower operational cost. In addition to the new U.S. C-Band (n77) product, Nokia’s enhanced mRRH portfolio also offers even broader mid-band capabilities with a new n79 product.

Nokia also introduces its new range of AirScale indoor Radio (ASiR) solutions, including a new ASiR-pRRH (pico Remote Radio Head) supporting U.S. C-Band spectrum requirements and a new triple-band pRRH – the first integrated 4G/5G pRRH. Nokia has also released a new Smart HUB, which supports even greater throughput capacity for 5G and an associated Hybrid Fiber Converter that enables the use of hybrid fibers for interconnection to existing ASiR-pRRH.

Nokia has also announced the availability of its latest millimeter wave (mmWave) radio product line-up, ideal for extreme capacity 5G connectivity for stadiums, airports or pedestrianised areas. These compact products support a wide range of deployment options to ease installation considerations in busy locations. Nokia’s mmWave portfolio supports all spectrum bands including 24/26 GHz, 28 GHz and 39 GHz.

Nokia recently launched the Nokia Smart Node, a compact femtocell solution delivering high-quality 4G and 5G indoor mobile coverage for residential and small-medium enterprise use. The unique, ‘plug and play’ modular design can be readily deployed in any environment to support evolving consumer applications. It is future-proof, supporting 4G now and 5G as and when required.

Rémy Pascal, Principal Analyst, Omdia commented: “Nokia has maintained its position as one of the top small cell manufacturers for five consecutive years according to our research. This new portfolio of AirScale indoor and outdoor solutions should enhance their standing as an industry-leader particularly given their support for all key frequency band requirements including the C-Band.”

Mark Atkinson, SVP, Radio Access Networks PLM at Nokia“We are delighted to announce the launch of our new range of small cells products, which further strengthens our award-winning and industry-leading portfolio. The portfolio is bolstered by the inclusion of the latest ReefShark chipsets and support for all frequency ranges including the C-Band. I look forward to supporting our customers’ requirements for premium coverage and capacity both indoors and outdoors.”

Nokia launches blockchain-powered Data Marketplace for secure data trading and AI models

Nokia today announced the launch of Nokia Data Marketplace as-a-service to facilitate secure sharing of data and AI models, enabling digital transformation and data monetization for enterprises.

As data volumes continue to surge, AI and machine learning are increasingly crucial in business decision making. Nokia Data Marketplace is designed to help enterprises and communications service providers (CSPs) use data in strategic decision making, by providing real-time access to massive trusted datasets.

The new service also enables enterprises and CSPs to become data marketplace providers themselves, by monetizing data exchanges between customers or business ecosystem participants.

Nokia Data Marketplace ensures trusted data exchange and authorization mechanisms. This enables a wide range of vertical use cases, including electric vehicle charging, environmental data monetization, supply-chain automation and preventative maintenance powering numerous vertical segments, including transportation, ports, energy, smart cities and healthcare.

Friedrich Trawoeger, Vice President, Cloud and Cognitive Services at Nokia, said: “Our customers need secure and trusted access to data for effective business decision making. With Nokia Data Marketplace, enterprises and CSPs can now benefit from richer insights and predictive models to drive digital ways of working and tap into new revenue streams.”

Nokia Data Marketplace accelerates AI initiatives through federated learning. This approach, combined with orchestration capabilities, facilitates collaborative development of highly accurate machine learning models for analytics use cases. It also meets growing demand for a platform that can efficiently apply AI and machine learning algorithms to in situ data.

Nokia Data Marketplace complements Nokia Worldwide IoT Network Grid (WING), which offers global IoT connectivity and vertical applications. For example, Nokia WING’s asset tracking solution is enriched by Nokia Data Marketplace’s blockchain to provide secure and automated data exchange and transactions between logistics’ ecosystem partners for faster turnaround.

Kaladhar Voruganti, Senior Fellow, Office of the CTO at Equinix, said: “Nokia Data Marketplace combined with Equinix data centers allows organisations to share data and algorithms globally at more than 240 metro edge locations. Sharing and processing of data close to its point of creation mitigates issues related to latency, compliance, and network backhaul cost. These neutral and secure edge locations are connected via high-speed and secure networks to data sources spanning across public clouds, private enterprise data centers and data brokers.”

Wouter van Neerbos, Chief Executive Officer at Marlin, said: “Through automated data exchange among shipping participants, Nokia brings us the transparency and operational efficiency required in our global marine supply chain. This reduces waiting time for shipping participants in the marine ecosystem, enables faster turnaround for ships, and reduces our costs.”

Justin van der Lande, Principal Analyst at Analysys Mason, said: “Data is the energy needed to run all future business; critical to their success in creating the best AI based insights and needs access to the largest data sets. Data sharing between enterprise partners is vital in building complete data sets. Facilitating data sharing using a secure platform, such as Nokia’s blockchain-based Data Marketplace, accelerates enterprises’ building of new data sets and creates richer business partnerships for them.”

Nokia 5.4 goes on sale in Ireland. #Nokia #Ireland

The home of Nokia phones, HMD Global, can today announce that the Nokia 5.4 is available to buy in Ireland from Three and Harvey Norman starting at €159. The 5.4 pushes the boundaries of what is possible at this level – featuring a 48MP Quad Camera with advanced recording capabilities and cinematic effects, two-day battery life and supported by Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 662 Mobile Platform, it offers fantastic value for money.

The new handset from the European smartphone player is designed to help people manage their increasingly busy lives while catering to the growing side hustle trend, which sees people around the world turning their passions into cash, by simply using their phone.

Championing speed and performance at amazing value, the Nokia 5.4 is the perfect partner. The signature quad camera stamps out shutter lag completely and has been upgraded to 48 megapixels – that’s 160 times better than the first Nokia camera phone (the Nokia 7650). This means you’ll never miss a moment – whether your capturing your passion project or precious family moments.

Treasured videos will look richer than ever with professional colour grading for a cinematic feel to your home and work movies. As for that all-important performance, the Nokia 5.4 promises a faster and smoother experience. In fact, it has enough juice to power you through 42 commutes (mean global commute is 67 minutes) and still has battery left over to check in with the kids and your email.

Committed to offering the latest security patch updates and Android upgrades, Nokia smartphones are beautifully designed inside and out. With three years of monthly security updates covered, people are safe for the time it takes a newborn to start walking, talking, speaking and telling their own stories. Bringing peace of mind to consumers, Nokia smartphones are number one in the 2020 brand trust rankings, raising the industry benchmark for upgrading more affordable devices.

Lisa Higgins, UK Marketing Lead and Country Manager for Ireland:

“Today marks an exciting day for the Nokia 5 series. The Nokia 5.4 has been designed to cater to consumers’ ever evolving lifestyles and is a timely addition to our smartphone portfolio. The recent rise of the side hustle trend has been a telling reflection of the difficult times faced by many consumers. We needed to do more than combine the fantastic 48MP camera and film capabilities with along battery life. So we added reliability with the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 662 Mobile Platform, 3 years of safety updates and 2 years of software upgrades. The resulting Nokia 5.4  is a smartphone that perfectly supplements the lives of those who thrive on more than a regular 9-5.”

Your Nokia 5.4 has:

  • 4000mAh battery – enough juice to handle 42 commutes (mean global commute is 67 minutes) with power to spare to check-in with the kids
  • 3 years of monthly security updates – the same time it takes for a child to walk, talk, learn to speak and tell their own stories
  • Tough polycarbonate body – strong enough to withstand the weight of a 10-year-old child (average global weight is 70.5lb)
  • 48MP camera – 160 times more detail than the first ever Nokia camera phone (Nokia 7650)
  • 0 shutter lag – 100% chance of capturing your child’s first cartwheel on camera
  • 60FPS – action captured will be nearly 3 times smoother than footage from standard 24fps cinema industry cameras

 Capture moments like the pros

The impressive combo of a 48MP quad camera and 16MP front camera allow you to take stunning photos and videos. Capturing incredible detail at any time and in any place has never been easier – be it in the light, dark, at home or on the move. The main camera’s ultra-wide lens takes in the bigger picture and is perfect for expansive landscape shots. Meanwhile, the depth and macro cameras will get those portraits and close-up snaps just right. Shutter lag is so often the ruin of that on-the-move, once in a lifetime shot – for the Nokia 5.4, this has been reduced to zero, meaning you won’t miss that never-again moment.

When shooting content, we’ve emulated the experts for our ‘Cinema’ mode. This function captures 24fps (the film industry standard) and allows users to shoot content in 21:9 cinematic format. Once finished, the professional colour grading options can add a Hollywood-like feel to your memories. To get smoother motion shots, simply dial it up to 60fps video recording – that’s nearly three times the film industry standard. Whether you’re filming your kid’s newly mastered skateboard trick or your dog’s fetch skills,, the high frame rate will capture every move. Combined with image stabilisation, OZO spatial audio and wind noise cancellation for videos, the Nokia 5.4 is perfectly suited for today’s busy lifestyles.

Rely on AI with Qualcomm®

You can always depend on the Nokia 5.4 to prioritise what matters to you. Whether it’s working, gaming, streaming, snapping or entertaining your little ones, your Nokia 5.4 will optimise its power to deliver more speed, longer battery life, better imaging and increased performance where needed. Tech Review – The Nokia 5310 2020 edition. #Nokia5310 #Tech

The Nokia 5310  express music was announced first back in August 2007 which was part of their music line up and had several really snazzy devices back then, the phone did have a better build quality then and was thinner than the current refresh model and was a popular slim candy bar phone that could knock out the tunes, there was also a set of speakers that came with some retail packages which I still have here today.

The refresh model is light yet has many features such as a torch, dual front facing speakers, radio and MP3 player, the camera will not win any awards but there is plenty of things to do here and snake of course built in, we take a hands on tour of the device below and show you what is on offer with todays model, Nokia/HMD Global hopefully will bring back some more of the golden oldies in the future.

Techbuzz purchased this device and HMD Global have no connection whatsoever with my thoughts…

Nokia signs 5G deal to become BT’s largest infrastructure partner. #Nokia #5G #BT

Nokia today announced that it has extended its long-term strategic relationship with BT into the 5G arena, following its selection as a 5G RAN vendor for the UK operator. As part of the deal, which will make Nokia BT’s largest equipment provider, Nokia will provide equipment and services at BT radio sites across the UK, helping to evolve BT’s radio access network to 5G and supporting its goal of maintaining the UK’s best network.

BT’s Nokia-powered network, which currently includes Greater London, the Midlands and rural locations, will be extended to also cover multiple other towns and cities across the United Kingdom( Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Carlisle, Cheltenham-Gloucester, Chesterfield, Dundee, Exeter, Grimsby, Hull, Ipswich, Lincoln, Newbury, Northampton, Norwich, Peterborough, Plymouth, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Swindon, Torbay, York). This enhanced Nokia footprint will support BT’s commitments to the UK government around the use of High Risk Vendors (HRVs) in UK network infrastructure.

Nokia will supply its AirScale Single RAN (S-RAN) portfolio for both indoor and outdoor coverage, including 5G RAN, AirScale base stations and Nokia AirScale radio access products. These solutions will enable BT to build on its existing network leadership in the UK  to deliver connectivity and capacity benefits to consumers at ultra-low latencies as well as reducing complexity and increasing cost efficiencies. The deal will also see Nokia optimize BT’s 2G and 4G networks and work alongside BT on the development of the OpenRAN ecosystem.

As part of BT’s network transformation, the operator will also utilize Nokia Software’s ng-SDM and NetAct network management platform, supporting the network evolution to 5G. These build upon the existing network architecture and provide an immediate cornerstone and single platform for new 5G-based services. Nokia will also provide its state-of-the-art Cell Site Gateway product providing key backhaul connectivity.

Nokia will also provide digital design and deployment for a faster time to market as well as optimization and technical support services.

Philip Jansen, CEO, BT Group said: “Digital connectivity is critical to the UK’s economic future, creating jobs and underpinning sustainable growth. That’s why BT is making game-changing investments in full fibre and 5G. In a fast-moving and competitive market, it’s critical we make the right technology choices. With this next stage of our successful relationship with Nokia we will continue to lead the rollout of fixed and mobile networks to deliver stand-out experiences for customers.”

Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO, Nokia, said: “I am delighted that BT has extended its partnership with Nokia on 5G RAN, making Nokia BT’s largest infrastructure partner. Our two companies have collaborated for over a quarter of a century in order to deliver best-in-class connectivity to people across the United Kingdom. We are proud to support BT’s 5G network evolution and look forward to working even more closely together in the years to come.”
