Review – The Nextbase 322GW Dashcam. #Dashcams #Tech #Motoring

Over the last while I have been testing out the new Nextbase line of dashcams and the latest one to drop in the the 322 which is more or less mid range when it comes to pricing, having said that it comes with many features included in the 522 GW which costs less and then we have the entry level 122 which is not touch based like the 322 and 522 but still gives results at the end of the day and this is again something for all pockets at the end of the day which some still say is expensive.

At the end of the day if you want good footage and a dashcam that will not fail or corrupt your SD card they are the best in the business given the app needs some work it is the only one I can safely recommend as a whole for results and features. The problem today is that we now see more cheaper alternative dashcams in local garages and euro saver shops and so on costing between €20-€50 offering all kinds of features yet do not work and I actually have one of those here now which I unboxed recently and is a pile of junk and have been in touch with them about it and was just told to format the SD card and heard nothing since telling them it does not work, This is an Amazon seller yet similar can be found in shops advertising the bells and whistles yet simply fail to work.

My email and images are available on request, I do have to give them the option to replace this or as I said in my email it could be a faulty unit which is fair as these things happen in tech I have emailed these more than once and no joy since last contact so that says enough for me being honest, however I like to give people a chance, these have had the chance and ignored it and it happens more often than you think, even with high end products but being in the position I am I will engage first with the company but DOA products is a thing in tech and cant be really avoided.

Moving back the the 322 it has been a popular piece of discussion on local forums and the 522 which I am a member of and I offer advice and the 322 came up in discussion recently alongside the 522 so I was in a position to offer advice on such and to be fair it comes down to budget which by all means is a valid choice for anyone and the 322 sits well here offering many features often omitted from rival brands.

First look at the Nextbase 122 dashcam and UI and compared to the 522GW. #Nextbase #Dashcams #Tech

Recently we covered the Nextbase 522GW which is on another level and this new kit from Nextbase is aimed at the more affordable end where you will see some big differences but it is still a worthy investment we talk more in the video on this.

The 122 is not touch based but works manually there is a toned down software version yet easy to navigate and set up too and functional again we go through all of this to help you decide if it is the right dashcam for you, All vehicles should come with dashcams as a standard but this is an argument for another day and with Nextbase products you are covered regardless, After testing many of their dashcams I can safely recommend them. We do a comparison between both the 522 and 122 in our first look video below, Any questions feel free to ask whilst we take this on a test run.

Review – The Nextbase 522 GW Dashcam and rear window camera. #Nextbase #Dashcams #Motoring

Having a dash cam should be mandatory in this day and age especially with our cartel insurance industry to crack down on fraudulent claims and so on which come to think my policy is up for renewal very soon which I cant wait to see if I get another hike. By now it should be a standard in vehicles as it is not expensive to install or for manufacturers to make their own but I have been saying that years now but no change.

The 522 GW is part of the new Nextbase line up and we also have the rear camera mount too which covers both sides and ideal and easy to install which is important. This rear camera can be also used as an inward camera or pointing out the back window, The main camera will be applied to your windscreen with a sticky pad and the same applies to the rear which just attaches itself with a cable extension into the side of the front unit.

You will need a different sd card to begin with and this was a spot of bother here trying to find one that works you will need a U3 class ten card as this is 4K and cards below will not allow you record footage, some cards will but you will not be able to use the rear camera and you will get 1080p clips on a lower rated cards so you need to get the right card to have full functionality on the unit for clips front and rear, the set up is different as you would find on other dashcams and here is the following even when set up with the right card installed.

There is different settings on the camera when both front and rear in use

Front – 1440p @30fps Rear – 720p @30fps
Front – 1080p @60fps Rear – 720p @30fps
Front – 1080p @30fps Rear – 1080p @30fps
SET UP GUIDE

The UI on the GW522 is easy to navigate and is all touch which is great with easy to follow set up as seen above in the video and the menu seems to be narrowed down a bit better than previous models in the older lineup you can pick your own settings or leave at default it is pretty much ready to plug and play on opening the box but you might want to change some options to suit your region but this is easy and takes two minutes to go through the whole menu setup.

After that it is pretty much up to you how to use it, you more or less just leave it there and let it do its thing or you can interact with the App and Amazon Alexa but the app is a bit frustrating at times and prefers a home WiFi connection to work I could not set on my phone to use the features like download clips on the fly which is handy but when you are connected to the WiFi things seem ok and you will see below what I mean in the Video.

However when I did manage to get the Bluetooth connection working  (after a few attempts later on)it opens a new way to transfer files on the fly,This is excellent for grabbing footage on the go and for sharing download speeds as you would expect are network dependent on the go, typical file was around 110MB and you can see from above the result and you get a map built in which is cool.

Once up and running all is good though the same applies when you connect to your pc with the provided cable file transfer is simple and viewing files is the same, you get high and low res options and saved clips will be in the protected folder these are the important files no doubt that you have saved or it could be a combination of both as mentioned before with clips automatically saving from bumps or audio but I found if you turn off the audio and turn down the sensor you should be fine having space taken up on your sd card and then having to look for them.

Footage comes out great no doubt even at night time with both front and rear cams, I had to upload clips separate because my phone would not allow it due to 4K to make just the one video so I kept these seperate so it is easier for you to decide what you need to see.

Overall this 522GW is a simple and effective camera to use and anyone will be able to install this and manage, there is a walk-through guide above if you are stuck for menu and set up purposes. The design here too is also nice and looks current and sleek and brings a fresh look to their line up which was needed having said that their is nothing wrong with the older models it is just nice to see the company bring a fresh design to the table. These are not cheap by some peoples standards as we can now buy dashcams for little or nothing but the saying is true you get what you pay for so in short I would have no problem recommending this to anyone if you want to be sure your footage is safe and you car, I tested the rear camera pointing out but as mentioned you can use inward too so you have choice.

The problem with the cheap dashcams you often find in garages and euro stores are not worth the punt in my book due to them breaking to easily ,not functioning all the time and footage being destroyed by corrupting you sd card or else the cheap sd card you get with them.

Key Features: 1440p HD resolution at 30 fps, Inbuilt Polarising Filter, 3” HD IPS touch screen, 140° viewing angle, 10Hz GPS Module, Bluetooth 4.2 , Wi-Fi via MyNextbase Connect and PC/Mac software – MyNextbase Play

First look at the Nextbase 522GW and rear window camera. #Dashcams #Motoring #522GW

It is that time of year again when we will be looking more into dash cams and home security as the short days will be coming in soon however with dash cams I have always said it they are a worthy investment and for all year use. We have covered all of the previous Nextbase dashcams and now they have a new line of cameras on offer under their series 2 models and this time round we have the 522GW with rear camera to go with it.

Today we will have a quick unboxing and I also go through the system UI which is user friendly and touch based which is great and it is easy to set up, The dash cam is more or less ready to go out of the box but you can look at the settings below in the video should you wish to change anything, You will need a class 10 micro sd card on this model as our older one would not work so keep that in mind.

Key Features: 1440p HD resolution at 30 fps, Inbuilt Polarising Filter, 3” HD IPS touch screen, 140° viewing angle, 10Hz GPS Module, Bluetooth 4.2 , Wi-Fi via MyNextbase Connect and PC/Mac software – MyNextbase Play

Review – The Nextbase Duo HD Twin Cam dashcam. #motoring #daschcams #nextbase

The Nextbase Duo HD cam is unique in a dash cam as comes with dual cameras with rotatable lenses for any angle front or back. This allows monitoring the road both ahead and behind at once. The accessories supplied are compatible with the complete range of dash cams.

See more detailed images during post.

This dash cam can ensure, if you witness a bad driver / accident on the road, in the front or back, this is recorded. The lens is unique as it can rotate to have both lens looking forward or to the side as required.  The unit has a brushed aluminium front and solid, hardwearing plastic.

Features:

  • Dual Cameras with 180° Lens Rotation

Dual lens design allows viewing in any direction, the wide-angle lens to the front and zoom lens to the rear.

  • 2.7″ LCD Colour Screen

LCD screen for ease of use and viewing the playback of recorded videos and photos.

  • Powered GPS Mount

Supplied with an Easy-fit powered mount, which allows the Dash Cam to be fitted and removed quickly and easily. The car power cable can remain in place, connected to the mount.

  • GPS Logger

GPS co-ordinates, date and time are recorded, the journey can then be viewed using the supplied software.

  • Windows & Mac playback software. The software is also available to download from www.nextbase.co.uk
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity

Connect your smartphone or tablet device to the Dash Cam; can be used to Start/Stop recording or to view or download files from the Dash Cam.

  • G Sensor / File Protection

In the event of an impact the device will automatically ‘protect’ the recording, stopping the file from being over-written. This can also be performed manually, by pressing the ‘protect’ button. Individual files can also be ‘protected’ when viewed within playback mode.

  • Parking Mode

The Dash Cam will power on automatically and make a protected recording, when physical movement of your vehicle is detected.

Click & Go GPS Magnetic Mounting:

The mounting as supplied with the dash cam is excellent allowing the power to be connected directly. The dash cam can then be removed from the bracket with one hand without touching any cables, the bracket is fitted with suction mount with built-in GPS receiver.

Setup involves:

Insert an SD card, press a few set up instructions, plug in the (Extra-long) 12V cigarette lighter power cable, and suction mount on to the vehicles and you’re ready to record.  The Nextbase has Automatic Start / Stop Technology which when the vehicle ignition is turned on, it starts to record automatically. Once the SD card is full of videos, rather than stopping, it is designed to overwrite the oldest file to the newest one. The time and date are automatically set upon the camera from satellite data, based on the country. Setup takes minutes.

There are 3 modes of camera operation – Video, Photo and Playback.

  • Video Mode: The default mode when the camera is turned on, for video recording.
  • Photo Mode: Allows you to take still photographs from the Wide-Angle lens camera.
  • Playback mode: Allows you to view recorded videos or photographs upon the dash cam’s LCD screen.
2 / 8

Play back:

Playback can be done via the 2.7″ LCD screen via the menu.  Files of approx. 245 MB for 3-minute clips as .mov clips, or 2.4 hours are stored on a 32 GB SD card.  They can be played on computers by many video players or use the Nextbase software (CD supplied) via Wi-Fi or download. File name ending with FR for the front camera and RE for rear camera. The Nextbase Duo HD does not come with an SD card, but cards can be purchased, e.g. Nextbase 32 GB microSD card (which can be used in all Nextbase dash cams), Generic SD cards can be used but would recommend using a good quality microSD card.

Nextbase Duo HD features built in Wi-Fi, allows downloading / share footage onto your mobile phone or tablet using the Nextbase Cam Viewer app (available on IOS & Android).  This footage can be shared to Social media / insurance firms or the police.

Compare

Taxi drivers often use dash cams but use these to face backwards to their passengers to record anti-social behaviour. This has the result should an accident happen outside the vehicle they have no record of this. The choice is not should a professional driver use a dash cam, rather which make and model for their budget or their requirements.

The Nextbase Duo HD has recording at full 1080p HD on each rotatable lens for enhanced picture quality day and night. This is suitable for most vehicles & drivers whether professional or your average driver (while the budget may exclude some average drivers use.).  The front lens has a 140° wide angle lens which allows recording of the entire road with the option on the 50m zoom to cover the rear or turn to the side as required.

If this dash cam is used to reduce your insurance premium, catch poor drivers for social media, improve your own driver, this cam has the quality, GPS co-ordinates, date and time recorded to ensure there is no question of the authentication of the footage.

3 / 12

If you are looking for a quality dash cam that stands out for the rest with the unique dual cameras, to record both front and back in full 1080p HD then there is no comparison with this product. Once this dash cam is used, other brands / models look inferior in comparison. A front-runner from Nextbase.
