Neil Mc Caul, Energy Trading Development Manager with Energia Group has more than 15 years energy trading experience. He has seen first-hand how the rapid increase in digitalization plus the added complexity of many additional energy sources such as solar, increased levels of wind (both onshore & offshore) and battery storage has changed the energy trading industry. Commenting on the changes, Neil said, “The historical practice of trading by commercial intuition, supported by limited analytics, is being challenged by more data-driven, machine-based trading.”

Gregory Balogh recently graduated from Queens University Belfast with a Masters in Data Analytics and is currently a PhD candidate exploring the topic of explainable AI in Queens University. Gregory is a Data Scientist working on the Trading Development team and he is responsible for designing and building artificial intelligence solutions to support trading decisions.

Speaking about what he enjoys most about his role, Gregory said, “I like the challenges, the people and most importantly, the fact that the energy market is very dynamic and complex. I love that I am working as part of a team creating innovative trading solutions.”

Highlighting the variety of roles open to data scientists, Gregory said, “Data science is an incredibly interesting and broad field, the same techniques can be applied in any industry: marketing, finance, medicine, healthcare, manufacturing, and autonomous vehicles to name but a few. Anchit Bhagat also recently graduated from Queens University Belfast with a Masters in Data Analytics. Anchit works as a Data Analyst alongside his colleagues Neil and Gregory on the Trading Development team. Each day is challenging as you try to understand how factors like wind availability or energy demand across the island can play significant role in identifying market patterns. Coca-Cola HBC’s #YouthEmpowered offers employment opportunity for 2,000 young people

Minister for Social Protection and Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, joined Coca-Cola HBC at An Cosán’s community education centre in Dublin to celebrate the launch of the 2022 #YouthEmpowered programme. This year’s programme will be delivered in partnership with An Cosán and YouthAction NI to create a pathway to learning and leadership for over 2,000 young people across the island of Ireland.

#YouthEmpowered seeks to bridge the gap in supports for women and disadvantaged youths aged 16 – 30 who are transitioning back to learning or onwards into the workplace. Now in its sixth year #YouthEmpowered has already provided free life and business skills training to more than 5,500 young people across Ireland and Northern Ireland.

This year’s programme includes an accredited ‘Return to Learning’ training course in partnership with Ireland’s largest community education organisation, An Cosán. With CSO figures showing that over 60% of young women in Ireland remain unemployed, the #YouthEmpowered courses have been created to help participants build the skills needed to continue in further education or on to employment.  The course focuses on learning digital and personal development skills to give young women the tools they need to progress on their pathway to employment over an intensive 6-week period.

Speaking at the launch, Minister for Social Protection, Community and Rural Development Heather Humphreys TD said: “I’m delighted to be here in An Cosán to officially launch the 2022 #YouthEmpowered programme. This initiative aligns with Government’s Pathways to Work strategy which aims to remove barriers to employment through training and education. It provides a real and tangible example of the private sector working hand in hand with the voluntary sector to support the national shared objective of driving economic growth, promoting inclusion for all and supporting young people into sustainable employment.

“I’d like to congratulate all the learners who are taking the first step towards employment by undertaking this course and I hope that with the guidance of An Cosán and the mentors from Coca-Cola HBC, #YouthEmpowered will be a stepping stone to a new career pathway for you all.”

With a shared vision to empower young people left furthest behind, Heydi Foster, CEO An Cosán, continued by saying: “We’re delighted to be part of this year’s Coca-Cola HBC #YouthEmpowered programme, and through the funding provided to be making the ‘Return to Learning’ courses available to more young women in our local community. We know from recent CSO figures that young women are still more likely than their male counterparts to become long term unemployed as a result of the recent COVID-19 disruption. This programme is designed to help participants overcome barriers to education or employment, empowering participants with the skills they need to return to learning and the confidence to reenter the workforce.”

Sarah Jane (26) from Dublin, who has just completed one of the 6-week #YouthEmpowered Return to Learning courses, closed by saying: “I’ve been out of education for over 3 years, and I wanted to better my life for myself and my children. This was the first step. I loved going into class in the mornings and my kids loved going into Early Years, which was a fully funded support service run on-site, so I could just focus on the course work. The whole experience has really increased my confidence and with the skills I’ve learned over the past 6 weeks, I’m hoping now to start a Level 5 Business Administration with Digital Skills course in September.”

In Northern Ireland Coca-Cola HBC is working in partnership with YouthAction Northern Ireland to deliver the #YouthEmpowered ‘Get Set For Work’ project, which aims to directly support 16 – 24-year-olds not in employment, education or training through skills days, career guidance workshops and the #YouthEmpowered Digital Hub. A special ‘Young Women Support Fund’ has also been established.

How does cybersecurity work?

Today’s generation lives on the internet, and the information that reaches securely to our computer without any misinterpretation has been made possible by cyber security. Through cyber security, programs systems, networks are protected from digital attacks which target sensitive information such as personal information. Extortion of money or disrupting business functioning is done through cyber attacks. 

Why is cybersecurity needed?

Living in a digital world, most of the transactions including, hotel room booking, ordering dinner, or booking a cab, is constantly performed using the internet. This generates data stored in a huge data center termed as cloud and can be accessed online. 

Due to the availability of various access points, constant traffic flow, public IP addresses, and tons of data to exploit, hackers stand an excellent chance to exploit the vulnerability and steal the data. To achieve this, they use different malware which can bypass virus scans and firewalls. For stopping these malicious digital attacks, cyber security is an essential requirement. 

Common types of cyber-attacks:

  1. General malware- It includes a variety of cyber threats like trojans and viruses. It is a code with malicious content that has the potential to destroy the data on the computer.
  2. Phishing- This is sent by email as a request for data from a trusted third party. Users are asked to click on a link sent in the email. It isn’t easy to recognize if the sender is from a legitimate or false source most of the time. This is similar to spam but is more harmful comparatively as it involves compromising confidential information.
  3. Password attack- A third party trying to gain access to the system by tracking a user’s password.
  4. DDOS- Distributed denial of service or DDOS refers to an attack whose focus is on stopping the network’s service. The high volume of data is sent on the network, resulting in overloading and finally preventing functioning.
  5. Man-in-the-middle- This refers to online information exchange. MIM attack is used to obtain information from the end-user as well as the entity. For example, in banking online, the man in the middle will communicate with you, impersonating a person from Bank and communicate with the bank, impersonating you, thus collecting information from both parties. 
  6. Drive-by downloads- Using malware, a program is downloaded to a user’s system. This program is used to steal the data.
  7. Mal-advertising- On clicking on an affected AD, a malicious code gets downloaded on the computer. 
  8. Rogue Software- This malware looks like legitimate security software required to keep the system safe but acts otherwise.

In profit-driven environments, enterprise security is one of the top pillars of business stability and trustworthiness, especially in industries that store users’ data or other sensitive information. To safeguard our data, there should be a protocol to protect us from cyber-attacks. This is called cyber security. In a computing context, security comprises physical security and cyber security. Both are used by organizations to protect from unauthorized access to their data and critical systems. Information security in an organization is designed to maintain the confidentiality, availability, and integrity of data. This forms the subset of cyber security.  

How does cybersecurity work?

Cyber security works on protecting the data against the below three activities:

  1. Unauthorized modification
  2. Unauthorized deletion
  3. Unauthorized access

The three main principles that act as a security pillar for both small and big organizations are confidentiality, integrity, and data availability.

Confidentiality– Same as privacy. It is designed to safeguard information from reaching the wrong people. Access is restricted to users who are not supposed to view the data. It is common for data to be categorized depending on the type of damage that can occur if it gets in the hand of unintended people and stringent measures to be taken to safeguard the same. Training is given to employees to safeguard these documents. This includes training on security risks associated with the confidential document, risk factors, password-related threats, password-related best practices, and social engineering methods to educate the users on how to prevent confidential data.

Integrity– Integrity refers to maintaining the accuracy and trustworthiness of data in its complete life cycle. Data must not be changed during transit, and steps must be taken to ensure that it remains unaltered by unauthorized people, something PAM for cybersecurity can do.

File permissions, user access controls, and version controls are taken care of to prevent erroneous changes or accidental deletion of legitimate users. Redundancy, backup availability, and failover cluster availability are essential to safeguard the system from serious hardware issues. Disaster recovery is essential during worst-case scenarios. Thus, safeguarding from data loss or interruption in the connection. A backup copy can be stored in a geographically isolated location, having fire and waterproofing. Firewalls and proxy servers will be used to help protect data from malicious attacks due to DDOS attacks or network intrusions. 

Steps to take to protect data when attacked by cyber:

  1. Identify– Identify the kind of attack our organization has been subjected to.
  2. Analyze and Evaluate– Analyse and evaluate the type and amount of data that has been compromised. 
  3. Treat– Work on resolving the issue by using the correct treatment so that the organization can come back to its original state with the least data loss or breach.
