Irish Team Leads Rollout of Affordable Healthcare Platform for Millions in Africa

A new platform, that aims to bring affordable primary healthcare to millions of people in Africa for as little as €7 per month, has launched this month following a collaboration between a team based in Dublin and their South African colleagues.

Lead by Irish woman Elaine Devereux, managing director of Lucky Beard in Dublin and its chief creative officer James Nelson, also based in Dublin, Unu Health is a digital platform that uses technology to drive down the cost of primary healthcare and empower the 50 million people in South Africa that currently rely on state healthcare to significantly improve their health and wellbeing.

According to recent reports, South Africa’s healthcare remains a two-tiered space, where access to private healthcare remains linked to the ability to pay for private medical scheme membership. Private healthcare accounts for 50% of the total expenditure on health, and supports only 17% of the population.

Seed-funded by the Standard Bank Group, the largest bank in Africa, Unu Health is initially targeting the 5.5 million formally employed population that cannot afford medical aid, with the launch of a corporate offering that enables employers to provide access to private primary healthcare for their employees.

“This breakthrough in healthcare has the potential to transform the lives of millions of people in Africa, where the average life expectancy falls ten years below the global average and the majority of the population rely on an overstretched public healthcare system, often waiting days to see a doctor,” said Devereux, whose global team from Dublin and South Africa are the lead advisors across strategy, brand, product design, and technology.

“Over the past 18 months, our teams have worked tirelessly to develop a solution that provides affordable, accessible, and effective primary care to individuals who previously had limited options.

“Unu Health uses innovative technology to simplify access to healthcare and drastically improve the patient experience while driving down the cost, much like Revolut did for banking, with the ambition to bring ‘healthcare that makes you smile.

“The initial offering will not only improve the health and wellbeing of employees but also enables employers to develop informed HR strategies and wellness initiatives that reduce absenteeism and ultimately enhance productivity.”

The app enables people to manage all of their healthcare needs in one place, offering easy access to their health records and medical history.  Users can get an up-to-date clinically valid health score updated each month and plug in their private health insurance plan so they can view and track their benefit use over time. They can also chat instantly to a nurse or doctor via WhatsApp or video call using a network of 3,400 private GPs, 8 000 specialists and 3,500 pharmacies across South Africa.

Tania Joffe, CEO and Principal of Unu Health, says the platform’s vision is to transform the delivery of quality primary healthcare in Africa, making it accessible, affordable and dignified for all. “Owing to the friction involved in accessing primary healthcare, most South Africans initially self-medicate acute symptoms while their chronic conditions go largely undiagnosed. As a result, on any day 15% of the workforce is absent – that’s 2.25 million people who are not at work.

“We’re looking to change the status quo by removing the friction and develop a hyperconnected patient-centred ecosystem linking healthcare users, healthtech resources as well as traditional in-person health resources, via an inclusive platform that is intuitive and easy to use from mobiles.

Tech Review – Tranya X5 sports earbuds

The Tranya X5 sports earbuds are ideal for those on a budget and who wants to have a good audio experience when they go training or even just commuting these also have a gaming mode too which is becoming a more common feature on headphones and earbuds so these earbuds cater for everyone in short.

The fit is solid as they are hooked around your ears which makes it ideal for the gym, running and any fitness activity, they will not fall off after my testing and this is something folks need when using for fitness activities, not a day goes by when I hear from someone that has a lost an earbuds from jogging or training or just being careless so these again are ideal for such folk.

How these sound however is where it is at, there is no app access here so no EQ settings to contend with unless you want to try an EQ app which most are brutal being honest but out of the box they sound really good which is a good thing with a well balanced audio experience no distortion or tinny sounds when maxed out either which again is good and often the case you would find on earbuds sub 100 euro but not here. From my usual test run with audio, movies, streaming and gaming they did a great job and felt very centered overall, these have got big drivers inside with them being 14.2mm graphene drivers.

The controls also work a treat having all the features required and we demo this in the video review below, you can skip and reverse tracks higher and lower the volume access voice assistant and change modes all from the earbuds and you can also manage calls too. One thing is though you cant use the left one on its own only the right side works if the left is in the case which is not a huge deal as many earbuds have this mono approach some all you to use one side and some allow both.

Overall these are well equipped affordable pair of sports earbuds adding the safety of not losing them with a well balanced sound the latest bluetooth 5.3 so no lag latency or disconnecting with a below par battery life but nonetheless a decent pair of sports buds for those on a budget.

Features

  • Equipped with a 14.2mm Graphene Driver
  • Bluetooth 5.3, Ultra-Stable Connection
  • Lower Latency, Better Gaming Experience
  • Incredible Clean Sound Quality
  • AI-Enhanced Clear Calls,4-Microphone System
  • Simple & Practical Touch Controls
  • Secure and Comfortable Wearing
  • 9-Hour Playtime on A Single Charge
  • IPX5 Sweat and Water Resistant

Tech Review – DIKTOYOU Men’s Smartwatch

The smartwatch is today for some seen as an expensive companion device which is true to one extent but over the years they have come down in price and more brands to sell them alongside their smartphones, For example I have my original Moto 360 which was my first smartwatch and now I have the Apple Watch Series 7, Pixel Watch A Galaxy watch 4 and several other cheaper brands that all cost less than 100 euro which this one does but this one has features none of those sub 100 euro watches have and even more expensive watches and two stand out features is a speaker to take calls and a voice assistant and also has GPS tracking.

OK so the thing here is this is a generic watch we have seen before and the software to go with it but it is kept simple and everyone wants something different and that is life, it may have some restrictions as to what you can do overall however for the price it a seriously decent watch to get you started of you do not own a smartwatch and do not want a convoluted mess of submenus or set-up this is one watch you should look at and in fact we have done several similar styled watches here before which you can find in the search option.

We go through the set-up the app and all that good stuff in the video review below so you will see what this entails in comparison to other watches out there today, most people today opt for fitness trackers and these are cheaper etc but do not offer the full suite expected on a fully fledged smartwatch and this watch is kind of offering both here which is a good thing.

The watch is a solid build with an IP67 rating and comes with two straps it is not a cheap plastic watch which is often the case at this price point too and stellar battery life it does lots of fitness activities has a huge selection of predefined watchfaces and measures the most important health features and is pretty accurate after comparing to other smartwatches I own.

Check out the video below for more and see how the speaker sounds the calls sound and how it works in general as it is a better view of what this offers for the price. For me it is a great watch to get started and overall a great watch to use and the only place it lacks is on replying on the watch itself but as for the rest it is fine, notifications come through they are a simple line of text and not detailed like more expensive watches but still gives you control at a glance whether or not you need to pick up your phone and one thing for me with smartwatches is they do keep you off your phone and today that is probably a good thing as we spend to much time on them.

Guinness Enterprise Centre launches Health@GEC Cluster in partnership with St. James’ Hospital

The Guinness Enterprise Centre (GEC), Ireland’s largest incubator in the heart of Dublin City and home to more than 160 innovative start-ups, today launched Health@GEC, a unique healthcare innovation cluster that connects and enables greater innovation within the sector by fostering collaboration between start-ups, medical practitioners, patients, and problem-solvers.

Following on from its partnership with St. James’ Hospital (SJH) – Ireland’s largest acute teaching hospital – the GEC hosted an event at the centre to launch and showcase some of the activity already underway and to seek new partners to join this successful ecosystem. Twenty healthcare companies are already engaged with the cluster, ranging from early-stage start-ups to established international organisations.

Innovation projects currently in progress include those focused on specialised clinical research and training, with others involving technologies to support patients – both bedside and outside the hospital setting – alleviating capacity issues which remains a universal challenge faced by healthcare systems worldwide.

The cluster has also attracted interest internationally from non-clinical partners who are eager to participate, as well as major global healthcare players. To date, this has included visits from the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, and the hosting of a visit from the Enterprise Ireland, Global Healthcare Forum earlier this year.

Beyond commercial engagements, the Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Programme, a partnership between campus colleagues SJH and Children’s Health Ireland (CHI), has been working with the GEC on a pilot programme whereby a multi-disciplinary team supports adolescents and young adults living with cancer in a non-clinical setting. It also engages with guest speakers and entrepreneurs – all keen to support these young people in an innovative model that may be expanded next year.

In preparation for the opening of the new children’s hospital at SJH campus in Dublin, CHI has also been using the GEC as a base for innovation workshops and upskilling healthcare workers to use Design Thinking to help solve complex challenges. CHI joins Health@GEC as an ecosystem partner, significantly increasing the potential for collaboration and open innovation for the group. The SJH/CHI campus, offering a full suite of ‘womb to tomb’ health services, will rank amongst the largest and most contemporary and comprehensive Academic Health Sciences Centres in Europe – employing in the region of 10,000 persons when fully operational.

Speaking at the event, Orla Veale, Programme Director for the Academic Health Science centre, said:

“St James’ recognises the value of open innovation to ensure it remains a leading healthcare organisation nationally and internationally, but also to continue to meet the needs of our patients into the future.”

Paul Anglim, Health Lead at GEC added: “Health@GEC promotes innovation in health by linking healthcare providers and institutions with companies and a supporting ecosystem of partners and investors. It is a hub from which innovators can access the network, locations, supports and people to bring their product to market successfully, thereby improving patient outcomes and new product adoption.

Battery charging

The battery charging typical 14 days but as suggested when major features were turned on and the default light was turned to max time, the usage time was reduced to about 9 days in line with the manufactures data during this review.

The biggest niggle of this tracker is the proprietary magnetic charger. This is required while supplied this unique charger has to be fitted to the tracker to charge. This additional charger in techbuzz view (as with all smartwatches/trackers) should be replaced with a standardised approach of a wireless charger option or UBC C charger cable for android users.

App:  Mi Fitness (Xiaomi Wear)

The setup of the app was easy with a QR code on the tracker allowing for easy finding and downloading. The App has over 10 million downloads with a 3.9-star rating from over 261 thousand reviews.  On the rating, I possible would rate the app a little bit higher, as from the setup to the use, this was fast, fluent in transactions, and worked as required. The developers have their act together with experience gained in the range on their previous products, The only slight niggle on occasions I had to manually sync to the android phone on few occasions when the phone was separated out of Bluetooth range of the phone. This would have auto-sync over time but on occasion when I want instant updates.

The app allows for tracking workouts and monitoring your fitness. Not limited to tracking your progress. Track your walks, runs, and bike rides right from your phone. Check your heart rate, blood oxygen, stress, and energy level.

Overall:

The Tracker is solid, and has over 110+ fitness modes, with a battery life quoted as 14 days which exceeds most other trackers. (Albeit reduced to about 9 days with most of the features enables) The tracker can be used in most water sports which is less than 50 meters (5ATM). The design of the strap allows for the tracker to be used on all hand sizes and

With the option to replace this with a variety of colours e.g., elegant Ivory, lively Orange, tranquil Olive, stretched Blue, sakura Pink or mystery, Black. The Mi Fitness (Xiaomi Wear) App works as expected leisurely, the screen is logical with the options to enable, or disable features.  The key features are visible on the watch or via the app.

The Motion Sensor 3-axis accelerometer, during my comparisons with 2 other well know branded devices provide similar results in terms of step counts.  The 110 fitness modes should suffice for most amateur or semi-pro athletes or just trying to encourage their fitness. There are various reminders to get up and move or set targets for workouts.  This is a solid kit with a great history of making trackers that work well, have numerous features, and won’t break the bank.

Note:

Whether using the most basic tracker or the most expensive, “willpower” is required to achieve results whereas the tracker allows the ability to set goals, monitor these and flag potential health issues in real-time.

6 Ways To Protect Your Physical Health As A Construction Worker

Construction workers are surely at the top of the list when it comes to the most dangerous jobs in the world. They are constantly at risk of injury or death on the job site. While there is no way to completely eliminate all risks, there are certain things that you can do to protect your physical health as a construction worker. In this blog post, we will discuss six ways that you can stay safe on the job site and protect your health!

Construction is a High-Risk Field of Work

Working in construction is extremely dangerous. According to the National Safety Council, construction is one of the most dangerous industries in the United States. In 2016, there were almost 900 fatal workplace accidents in construction. This means that construction workers are more than twice as likely to be killed on the job than other workers. For instance, the builders risk insurance cost for a construction project reflects this high level of risk. There are a variety of risks that construction workers face on the job site. These include falling from heights, being struck by objects, and being caught in or between equipment. Construction workers are also at risk of electrical injuries, slips and falls, and exposure to harmful chemicals. Despite the risks, there are certain things that you can do to protect your physical health as a construction worker.

1. Wear The Appropriate Safety Gear

One of the best ways to protect your physical health as a construction worker is to wear the appropriate safety gear. This includes items such as hard hats, safety glasses, and earplugs. Wearing the proper safety gear will help to protect you from injuries if you are involved in an accident. It is also important to wear the proper clothing when working in construction. This means that you should avoid loose-fitting clothes and jewelry. You should also wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from injuries.

2. Follow All Safety Instructions

Another way to stay safe on the job site is to follow all safety instructions. This includes following the correct procedures for using equipment and machinery. It is also important to be aware of your surroundings and know where the potential hazards are. If you see something that looks unsafe, do not hesitate to report it to your supervisor. Moreover, being safe also means ensuring you take frequent breaks and maintain your physical health. This means eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep.

3. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

It is important to stay aware of your surroundings at all times when you are working in construction. This means being aware of the location of potential hazards. It is also important to know where the exits are in case of an emergency. If you see something that looks unsafe, make sure to report it to your supervisor immediately. On other hand, if you are ever in an emergency situation, do not hesitate to evacuate the area immediately. Staying safe on the job site is extremely important for construction workers. One of the best ways to do so is to be aware of your environment.

4. Take Breaks Often

Construction work can, and usually is quite physically demanding. It is important to take breaks often to avoid exhaustion. If you are feeling tired, make sure to take a break and rest. The breaks will help you to stay alert and focused on the job at hand. Breaks also help you maintain your good physical condition, so you can do your job safely. If you are not used to working with heavy machinery or lifting heavy objects, it is important to take some time to get used to the physical demands of the job.

5. Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking plenty of water is important for all workers, but it is especially important for construction workers. This is because working in construction can be quite physically demanding. When you are sweating, you are losing water and need to replace it. Drinking plenty of water will help to keep your body hydrated and prevent heat exhaustion. Make sure to drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you are not thirsty. Moreover, if you are working in a hot environment, make sure to drink even more water than usual.

6. Get Regular Health Checkups

It is important for all workers to get regular health checkups. This is especially important for construction workers, as they are exposed to a variety of potential hazards on the job site. Health checkups can help to identify any health concerns that you may have. They can also help to catch any problems early before they become serious. If you are a construction worker, make sure to get a health checkup at least once a year. Furthermore, if you are ever injured on the job, make sure to see a doctor immediately.

Safety Should Always be Your Number One Priority

Construction is a very high-risk job. There are a lot of potential hazards that you are exposed to on a daily basis. This is why it is so important to always prioritize safety. Even if it is about a menial job, like sweeping the floor, you should always think about safety first. Remember, your safety is in your own hands. If you take the necessary precautions, you can stay safe on the job site. Stay safe and follow these tips to protect your physical health as a construction worker. Of course, your employer also has a role to play in ensuring your safety on the job site. They should provide you with the necessary safety equipment and training. However, at the end of the day, it is up to you to stay safe on the job. Do not hesitate to speak up if you ever feel unsafe or see something that looks dangerous. Stay alert and always think about safety first.

In conclusion, following these six tips will help you to protect your physical health as a construction worker. Your safety is ultimately in your own hands. Hence, you should always strive to prioritize it and take the necessary precautions to stay safe on the job site. Your employer, on the other hand, will also have a role to play in ensuring your safety, but at the end of the day, it is up to you to stay safe.

HealthBeacon launches its integrated Smart Scale

Healthbeacon plc, the leading digital therapeutics company that develops products for managing injectable medications for patients in the home, has today announced the launch of its new Smart Scale, an integrated solution that forms part of its Injection Care Management System (ICMS).

The HealthBeacon Smart Scale enables patients to add weight monitoring to its ICMS, as the connected weight scale tracks weight progression, providing clinical teams with insights on specific medication outcomes.

There are currently nine million patients in the U.S. that self-administer injectable medications in the home, and many require their weight to be carefully managed and monitored. HealthBeacon’s integrated Smart Scale will sync seamlessly with its ICMS, helping patients improve adherence to therapies and providing healthcare practitioners with access to important clinical data.

HealthBeacon provides each member of its injection care management system with a Smart Sharps Bin, a companion app, a more sustainable waste management service, and now, the integrated Smart Scale. This enhances a system that already improves the likelihood of success on therapy by increasing adherence by as much as 26% and persistence by 19% according to peer reviewed research.

It is expected that the HealthBeacon Smart Scale will become available to HealthBeacon patients this autumn.

Commenting, HealthBeacon CEO and co-founder, Jim Joyce, said: “The launch of the HB Smart Scale is an important step as we strive to improve injection adherence globally. Weight management is an important factor in the health of many patients that are required to self-administer injectable medications at home. This product integrates seamlessly into our technology which patients are already using, meaning this addition can improve their health with no added level of complexity.”

The announcement of the launch of HealthBeacon’s Smart Scale was made at the annual MAGIC conference in Chicago, the largest patient conference for children with growth disorders. The monitoring of weight progression is of particular importance to children suffering from growth disorders.

Commenting further, Mr Joyce said: “We know how difficult it is for families that must administer injections to their children at home. For children on growth hormones, it can be difficult to both manage injections and monitor growth progress. HealthBeacon’s Smart Scale will support affected families by enabling parents to track their child’s growth along with monitoring injection adherence. It also benefits children as they become teenagers and can administer medication themselves, providing them with a level of independence while enabling their parents to continue to monitor their adherence and track their growth.”
