300,000 Meals delivered to Irish charities by Deliveroo and Foodcloud

Deliveroo Ireland has announced that it has donated more than 300,000 meals to people experiencing food insecurity across Ireland through a national charity partnership.

308,000 meals have been distributed to vulnerable people and families in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway by local charities such as Feed Cork, Empower and Novas Limerick thanks to a partnership between Deliveroo Ireland and tech based food redistribution enterprise FoodCloud.

The partnership, which began in 2022, aims to provide half a million meals for FoodCloud’s network of 650 community and voluntary groups across Ireland by 2024. The partnership is part of Deliveroo Ireland’s global Full Life campaign. Full Life aims to use Deliveroo’s unique network of riders, grocers, restaurants, and customers for good and support the local communities in Ireland where it operates.

Deliveroo’s Ireland team has revealed that through support from Irish customers, a total of 308,732 meals have been donated to charities which help people that face food insecurity.

Irish Deliveroo customers have backed the campaign by making donations to FoodCloud when placing orders on the Deliveroo app. An in-app charity donation option allows customers to add a ’round-up’ donation to their orders. This rounds up an order total to the nearest euro, with all proceeds going to FoodCloud. For every €1 raised, 3.2 meals are provided to people facing food insecurity.

Giving locally

Two of the charities that are supported by Deliveroo Ireland’s Full Life campaign are Feed Cork and Empower in Dublin.

Feed Cork is the humanitarian department of Cork Church. It partners with community organisations and businesses to help fight food insecurity locally by providing a three-day supply of nutritional food for individuals and families that need this support.

Empower aims to positively change disadvantaged communities in Dublin by supporting individuals to financial independence through jobs, training and education and helps local groups implement anti-poverty and social inclusion projects.

The Deliveroo Ireland and FoodCloud teams recently visited Empower’s headquarters to learn more about the work being done locally by its staff and volunteers.

Speaking at the visit, Helen Maher, Regional Director, Deliveroo Ireland, said:

“We’re pleased to have achieved the significant milestone of providing more than 308,000 meals for vulnerable people across Ireland. We couldn’t have achieved this without the incredible support of our customers, partners and riders. Deliveroo’s commitment to supporting Irish charities remains firm and we will continue to offer our support to local organisations by donating meals and raising funds for groups like Empower and Feed Cork.”

Angela Ruttledge, Head of Public Engagement at FoodCloud added:

“It’s been a pleasure to collaborate with Deliveroo Ireland on its Full Life Campaign, promoting awareness of food insecurity across the country. By mobilising its customers to donate, Deliveroo Ireland is helping to ensure vulnerable people have access to healthy and nutritious meals.”

Tesco Ireland redistributes 20 million meals to 350 charitable groups in 10 years

Over the past decade, almost 20 million meals, or 7,900 tonnes of food, have been redistributed to people living in food insecurity across Ireland, thanks to Tesco Ireland’s Surplus Food Donations Programme. On average, Tesco Ireland redistributes and donates up to 40,000 meals every week to over 350 charities across the country.

New research commissioned by FoodCloud, a social enterprise with a mission to transform surplus food into opportunities, shows that families with children are the single largest group of people accessing donations from Tesco Ireland’s Food Surplus Redistribution programme.

According to the study, conducted in July of this year, families with children make up almost half (47%) of all those accessing food donations, while three quarters (75%) of community groups, who distribute surplus food, report that they have experienced an increased demand for food in the last six months.

In ten years of partnership, diverting this surplus food from going to waste to those in Irish communities who need it, Tesco has significantly reduced emissions associated with the processing of this waste.

Working with FoodCloud and Olio, as well as over 350 local charitable and voluntary groups nationwide, Tesco redistributes surplus food at the end of each day to those who need it most in our communities. This food is perfectly edible but because it is nearing its use by date, it will be removed from the shelves in store. Typical donations comprise fruit and vegetables, bakery goods, meat and more.

In 2013, Tesco Ireland became the first retailer to partner nationally with FoodCloud, and this year the two organisations are celebrating 10 years of working together. The programme, which began in one Tesco Express store on Talbot Street in Dublin city, is now in operation across Ireland, and has since expanded into the UK, Czechia, and Slovakia.

Marking this important milestone, Tesco Ireland Communications Director, Rosemary Garth said: “We are very proud of what has been achieved since we launched our national Surplus Food Donations Programme 10 years ago. As a grocery retailer we have no time for waste and are absolutely committed to ensuring that no good food goes to waste when there are people in our communities who need it.

Since we launched this programme, which is powered by our partners FoodCloud and Olio, we have provided almost 20 million meals to the most vulnerable in our communities. This has enabled the charitable and voluntary sector in Ireland to reduce their food bills by over €23 million, which, according to FoodCloud, has empowered them to invest in providing an even greater level of support services in towns and cities nationwide”.

Co-founder of FoodCloud, Aoibheann O’Brien said: “Tesco’s commitment to eliminating edible food waste from their stores has positioned us as a global leader in tackling food waste. Through our strong partnership with Tesco, we have continued to grow our impact, innovate, and push boundaries around what is possible around food redistribution. We have worked together to reduce food waste for 10 years, expanding across four countries.”

FoodCloud partners with Coca-Cola HBC to launch new ‘Food Sourcing Strategy’

Minister of State for Land Use and Biodiversity Pippa Hackett today joined FoodCloud and their partners Coca-Cola HBC Ireland and Northern Ireland to announce a three-year initiative which will see the introduction of a new Food Sourcing Strategy.

With a strong working relationship of over 3 years, Coca-Cola HBC has supported both FoodCloud in the Republic of Ireland and their counterparts FareShare in Northern Ireland with financial and product donations as well as volunteer hours. This new partnership will take a strategic approach to reducing food waste across the island of Ireland and will focus on FoodCloud’s objectives of doubling the volume of food redistributed to 5,100 tonnes per year by 2025. This equates to approximately 12,000,000 meals redistributed in Ireland and 16,000 tonnes of CO2-eq avoided. Tackling food loss and waste delivers a threefold purpose directly benefiting – the climate, food security, and the long-term sustainability of our food systems.

Through this initiative Coca-Cola HBC will support FoodCloud in Ireland and FareShare in Northern Ireland to analyse and review the existing approach to food sourcing and identify challenges and opportunities for growth. The outcomes and indeed the development of the food sourcing strategy is designed to support the efforts of social enterprises to engage larger manufacturers, producers and suppliers across the food and drink supply chain in surplus redistribution. Through the implementation of this new strategy, food industry partners will have the knowledge and processes they need to identify ways to prevent food waste and reduce carbon emissions within the sector.

Speaking at today’s announcement, Minister of State for Land Use and Biodiversity, Pippa Hackett, said: “The new Food Sourcing Strategy is a very welcome initiative. Tackling food loss and food waste is a key step in combating climate change and in Ireland’s transition to a circular economy. With over 770,000 tonnes of food waste recorded in 2020, it is vital that producers, suppliers, consumers and Government work together to address this pressing challenge.”

Since 2013, FoodCloud has redistributed over 201.3 million meals in Ireland and internationally. It has also rescued more than 84,555 tonnes of food from going to waste, avoiding over 270,576 tonnes of CO2-equivalent. Food waste also has a huge environmental impact, accounting for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions*. To put that into perspective: Food waste generates over four times more greenhouse gas emissions than the global aviation industry.

The existing partnership between FoodCloud and Coca Cola HBC has already seen 586 tonnes of surplus food redistributed in the first quarter of 2023. That equates to approximately 1,875 tonnes of Co2 equivalent avoided and 1.4 million meals equivalent redistributed to Food Cloud’s network of over 600 charities.

Aoibheann O’Brien, Co-Founder and Partnerships DirectorFoodCloud, said: “While FoodCloud has made great progress in rescuing and redistributing surplus food, this figure represents only a very small percentage of the 770,300 tonnes of food that is wasted every year in Ireland. We are still only scratching the surface of surplus potential in Ireland and more needs to be done to achieve the ambitious target of halving food waste by 2023.

“The FoodCloud Food Sourcing Strategy supported by Coca-Cola HBC will be the foundation to significantly grow the volumes of food redistributed across the Irish supply chain by 2025 and support FoodCloud’s ambitious vision of a world where no good food goes to waste. In our efforts to cut emissions as a country, the Food Sourcing Strategy has an important role to play in reviewing the processes in place and providing tangible learnings to help us double the volume of food redistributed to 5,100 tonnes per year by 2025 and to cut the associated emissions of wasted food. The food sourcing strategy involves an analysis, not only of the surplus that is available and of the needs of our charity and voluntary organisation (CVO) partners, but also an analysis of ways to unlock pockets of fresh produce and a diverse range of foods that can contribute to a balanced diet for the communities that we serve. We look forward to working with Coca-Cola HBC over the coming three years to meet these challenges.”

The partnership being announced today builds on Coca-Cola HBC’s commitment to achieve net zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2040. As part of this commitment, Coca-Cola HBC has sought to promote a life-cycle approach to reducing food waste and the sustainable sourcing of raw materials.

Tom Burke, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director, Coca-Cola HBC Ireland and Northern Ireland, said: “The journey to NetZero requires partnership across all industries and sectors. As the largest beverage provider on the island of Ireland and the world’s most sustainable beverage company we recognise we have a role to play in leading the industry response and developing partnerships across the sector. In our own operations, we are looking both internally and externally to reduce carbon emissions and play our part in driving sustainability. Over the past three years we have seen the incredible work FoodCloud and FareShare do, and we are excited to work together to develop this vital Food Sourcing Strategy which will evolve how the food and drink industry approaches food redistribution and as a result reduce associated carbon emissions.

“The Food Sourcing Strategy will see Coca-Cola HBC and FoodCloud work together with others across the food and drink sector to find innovative new ways to reduce food waste and double the volume of food redistributed to 5,100 tonnes per year by 2025. We look forward to seeing a vibrant community of industry and community partners emerge as we work collectively to prevent food loss and achieve a world without waste.”

Deliveroo Ireland announces a year-long partnership with FoodCloud – it is using its technology to enable customers to add a round-up donation to the charity while ordering food in-app.

Deliveroo Ireland has today announced a year-long partnership with FoodCloud – which will see the food delivery company fundraise on behalf of the food waste and food security social enterprise who were recently named Charity of The Year for their work redistributing surplus food to their network of charities across the country.

As part of its Full Life campaign, Deliveroo is enabling customers to add a round-up donation to their in-app food orders, with all proceeds going to FoodCloud to tackle the twin issues of food waste and food insecurity.  Deliveroo, with their customers, will raise funds to provide up to 500,000 meals, which will be distributed to FoodCloud’s network of more than 600 charities and community groups over the course of 2023.

This partnership comes as new research from Deliveroo reveals that people in Ireland remain generous givers to charity despite the cost of living crisis – only 22% would consider cutting back on charitable giving to save money. The Irish public are more likely to spend less on clothing (49%), leisure activities (40%) and travelling by car (32%) to save money. In addition, 1 in 3 (33%) of the Irish public would be more likely to donate to charity if they were presented with a simpler, more convenient, way to make a donation. Donating through the Deliveroo app couldn’t be easier – Deliveroo customers need only to round-up their order to the nearest euro when paying for their takeaway or groceries. For every €1 raised, 3.2 meals will be provided to people facing food insecurity.

Through the partnership, Deliveroo is aiming to save 210 million tonnes of food from going to waste, which will prevent 675 tonnes of CO2 emissions from entering the atmosphere and damaging the environment in the process. With sustainability being a priority at Deliveroo,  the company is committed to playing a role in reducing food waste.

Working with Deliveroo to raise awareness of the partnership, TV presenter and food influencer, James Kavanagh commented:  It’s no secret that I’m pretty obsessed with food, so I am really pleased to play a role in raising awareness of the amazing partnership between FoodCloud and Deliveroo. This campaign will stop good quality surplus food from going to waste and help so many people who are struggling, which has never been more important. It’s so easy to support through the Deliveroo app – just a few cents will make such a difference, so next time you place an order, remember to round-up to make a donation!

Partnering with FoodCloud marks the next phase of Deliveroo’s Full Life campaign and its longstanding commitment to supporting local communities, following the company providing thousands of meals to people in need through a partnership with the Dublin Simon Community last year and its work to raise awareness of the Women’s Aid helpline working with the Deliveroo rider fleet.

Paddy Quinlan, Senior Regional Manager, Deliveroo Ireland commented: “Since we launched in 2015, Deliveroo Ireland has worked hard to make a positive contribution to the communities in which we operate. We are proud to be building on what’s been achieved so far and our partnership with FoodCloud, one of the most impactful charities around, will provide thousands of meals to those in need across Ireland.”

Iseult Ward, CEO & Co-Founder, FoodCloud said:  “We are delighted to partner with Deliveroo on its Full Life Campaign, an initiative on their platform to raise awareness on the twin issues of food waste and food insecurity that enables customers to make a donation to support our work. Investing in our work to redistribute food that might otherwise go to waste, ensures good food gets to people and families at a time when they are facing unprecedented levels or economic hardship while protecting our planet and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

The round-up charity function in the Deliveroo app can be found when customers go to pay for their order. Customers can round-up their order to the nearest euro. Youth mobile network 48 raises €25K for FoodCloud through its data donation feature and #DoGoodWithData campaign

48, Ireland’s first truly digital-only youth mobile network, has raised a whopping €25,000 for environmental social enterprise, FoodCloud through its unique data donation feature which allows customers to donate up to 5GB of their data each month. For every GB donated, 48 turns that data into cash on behalf of its customers for the chosen charity. Simples!

The public were also given the opportunity to take part and raise money through the #DoGoodWithData campaign, which ran in the build-up to Christmas 2020. Recruiting some of Ireland’s soundest and sustainably-minded social content creators to kickstart the campaign, 48 asked that they make the ultimate sacrifice by going offline for a 24-hour period. That meant no surfing, no posting, no linking, and no scrolling (eeeeek!), whilst encouraging the youth of Ireland and nominating others to join in and participate in the #DoGoodWithData campaign.

Speaking about the donation, Iseult Ward, CEO of FoodCloud commented;

“In 2020, FoodCloud  redistributed over 2,990 tonnes of surplus or excess food to over 600 community groups across Ireland. This figure was a 70% increase in food distributed in 2019. By redistributing this surplus food, FoodCloud’s activities have meant an avoidance of estimated 9,670 tonnes of Co2 emissions equivalent. We were so delighted to partner with 48 for this innovative and creative campaign, and are very grateful for such generosity from 48 customers. ”

Clare Aughney, Marketing Manager, 48 said; “We are so proud to announce 48 will be donating €25,000 to FoodCloud as a result of our customer’s generous data donations on the back of the #DoGoodWithData campaign. This generosity means 75,000 extra meals will be redistributed through the FoodCloud network of community groups across the country. 48’s Donate Your Data feature continues to be extremely popular among our customers, with more and more people choosing to donate a portion of their data each month to a good cause.”

It is evident customers are really happy with this unique feature as 48 were recently awarded ‘Best Mobile Operator for Data’ as voted for by the public and ‘Best SIM Only Pay As You Go Plan’ voted by a panel of judges at the Switcher.ie awards

48 membership plans start from just €10.99 per month and customers have the choice to do more with their data by choosing from a selection of flexi-data features including sharing, swopping, saving and donating data. Our plans, your rules.

48 + FoodCloud launch #DoGoodWithData – a social movement to turn data into donations to help fight food waste this Christmas

48, Ireland’s first truly digital-only youth mobile network, is partnering with social enterprise FoodCloud this Christmas for the #DoGoodWithData initiative to help raise vital funds and fight food waste over the festive period. Inspired by the incredible force that is Christmas spirit, 48 is calling on members of the public to join the movement by going offline for a day to help raise much needed funds to aid FoodCloud in their quest to reduce food waste this Christmas, New Year and beyond.

So, what’s all this #DoGoodWithData about? 48 has recruited some of its favourite social content creators to make the ultimate (social) sacrifice. Each of them will be shutting down their own social media channels for 24 hours to help drive participation and encourage everyone to #DoGoodWithData this Christmas. The data that is saved by staying offline is turned into a cash donation to FoodCloud. 48 members can make donations not just at Christmas time but right throughout the year, you can donate your unused data at the end of each month. That won’t be hard, considering 48 provides 100GB per month.

Joining the movement couldn’t be easier, and all it takes is just one day. Here’s what you do…

Step 1 – Pledge to go offline for 24 hours, just tag @48Ireland in a post or story on Instagram to let us know that you’re taking part.

Step 2 – Just by taking part, we will donate the equivalent data you don’t use to FoodCloud.

Step 3 –  This is a movement and we need your help, so why not tag some mates and get them involved too! The more taking part, the more money we raise. You can even add the specially designed giphy stickers 48 has created to your post by searching #DoGoodWithData on Instagram.

Shockingly, billions of tonnes of food is wasted globally each year with over 1 million tonnes of food thrown out in Ireland annually with each household wasting on average €700 each every year, peaking at Christmas time. During the holiday season a large portion of wasted food occurs where the equivalent of thousands of festive dinners are thrown away.

FoodCloud works with food businesses nationwide who have volumes of surplus food, such as farms, manufacturers, distributors and retailers to manage these surpluses as efficiently as possible. They then supply the surplus food to their network of over 650 charity partners to ensure minimal food waste and donating it to those in need.

Speaking about the initiative, Eilis Fitzgerald, Head of Marketing Communications at 48 commented; “Our unique plans were created to allow our members the flexibility to use their data how they want to use it. Since we launched our new plans earlier this year, our customers have chosen to donate over €10,000 to FoodCloud, which is incredibly heart-warming to see especially throughout such a tough year. We believe the Christmas spirit is strong within our membership base and are confident that they will be fully behind this initiative to support FoodCloud.”

With membership plans starting from just *€7.99 per month, customers have the choice to do more with data by choosing from a selection of flexi-data features including sharing, swapping, saving and donating data. Our plans, their rules.
