Dell Technologies Ireland unveils top five technology predictions for 2022

Dell Technologies Ireland, has today unveiled its top five technology predictions for 2022. The technology leader is forecasting how advances in 5G and Edge computing together with a greater focus on cyber resilience will change the way businesses and organisations protect and harness the value of data in the next twelve months.

With 41% of businesses in Ireland saying the pandemic has significantly increased the amount of data they need to capture and act on, this explosion in data is only set to grow in 2022. Advances in 5G connectivity, Edge computing and the shift to as-a-Service will make managing and extracting value from large amounts of data easier and more efficient for Irish businesses.

The technology predictions for 2022 follow a year in which Dell Technologies uncovered the complex challenges associated with gathering large amounts of data. According to the company’s Global Data Paradox, 63% of companies in Ireland regard their business as data-driven yet only 20% testify to prioritising its use across the business. In addition, although handling greater amounts of data than before, almost 60% of companies in Ireland have not come close to realising their digital transformation goals.

Unveiling his 2022 predictions, Jason Ward said: “As we look ahead to 2022, technology will provide a path to sustaining economic recovery as well as helping businesses to unlock the value of data to achieve their digital transformation goals.

“To help organisations on this road, we’ve identified five technology predictions that will play a key role in 2022. Advances in 5G connectivity will enable greater numbers of businesses to extract real-time insights from data – at the Edge – as well as supporting unprecedented connectivity to transform different aspects of our society.

“We’ll also see cyber security become intrinsic to digital transformation, protecting the growing amounts of data being generated by businesses. Meanwhile, the shift to as-a-Service will accelerate sharply as organisations look to improve their agility and data management. In doing so, they can turn their data burden into a data advantage.

“Next year will also see emerging technologies accelerate the shift to a more sustainable future. At Dell Technologies, we believe that by looking ahead and identifying the IT challenges to come, business leaders can overcome the obstacles standing in the way of digital transformation and remain resilient, competitive and sustainable in the long-term.”

Top 5 Predictions:

The top technology predictions include:

  • Prediction 1: Cybersecurity will become intrinsic to digital transformation

With the increased focus on technology over the course of the pandemic, cyber resilience has never been more important. The new year will see cybersecurity become intrinsic to digital transformation. • Prediction 2: 5G set to become the digital fabric of our data-driven era

2022 will mark the turning point for widespread connectivity enabled by 5G. As the digital fabric of our data-driven era, 5G will accelerate the creation of digital cities and a surge in new smart mobility services from autonomous vehicles to connected scooters. Private 5G rollout will also become a viable option for many large businesses in the areas of manufacturing and logistics. This heralds a new era of private connection for businesses, enabling greater data-driven insights and real-time business decisions.

  • Prediction 3: Opportunities at the Edge will be realised

As we move into 2022, more organisations will seek to act on data closer to where it is created – at the Edge. With an 800% increase in apps at the Edge expected by 2024, Edge Computing will become the new battleground as data management becomes a new class of workload. Fuelled by 5G, a growing number of organisations in Ireland will seek to capitalise on Edge Computing to increase the speed at which they gather data and enable decision-making in real-time.

  • Prediction 4: Technology to be consumed ‘as-a-Service’

With 83% of businesses around the world battling outdated IT infrastructure, a growing number of Irish organisations will embrace technology ‘as-a-Service’. The IDC predicts that by 2024, half of data centre infrastructure will be consumed ‘as-a-Service, bringing with it the ability to scale to meet the evolving needs of businesses.

  • Prediction 5: IT to play a greater role in advancing sustainability

As the world becomes more aware of its climate commitments, 2022 is due to see an enhanced focus on the role of emerging technology in advancing sustainability. From more efficient farming practices enabled by AI to advanced robotics and 5G fighting water pollution, new technologies have the potential to create a greener future. There will also be a greater focus on how technology companies themselves will meet their own sector-specific sustainability goals.

Tech Tips for a Happy Festive Season – Tara Gale Dell Technologies Ireland

By Tara Gale, Client Solutions Product Manager, Dell Technologies Ireland

With the festive season fast approaching, people across Ireland will be spending significant time purchasing gifts for loved ones online. It is expected that this year’s holiday season will be another year of record-breaking online sales.

We often spend so much time on our chosen e-commerce platform, that it never crosses our minds what happens behind the scenes. There are many threats online, especially during this time of year, and it’s very important to make sure that as you navigate shopping online, you are doing so safely.

Often, we get excited to purchase and open a brand-new device that we forget how we can make use of our old one. Have you thought about recycling your old version or extending the battery life of your current tech gadget? At Dell Technologies, we are here to help guide you to safely shop for new tech, dispose of the old and keep powered up over the festive period.

SAFE SHOPPING ONLINE

The convenience of the internet continues to create new opportunities for online shopping by ways of apps, microsites and so on. However, it’s also a time of year when experts see an uptick in cyberattacks. With both An Garda Síochána and Europol recently warning businesses and shoppers of the dangers of ransomware in the lead-up to Christmas[1], consumers should stay vigilant and follow these tips to stay protected while online shopping:

  • Be sure to use a secure website by looking at the URL (https://)
  • Avoid making purchases on public computers and public Wi-Fi as they may contain malicious software and are not secured
  • Ensure you have a strong password or passphrase, consisting of numbers, letters and special characters
  • Never reuse or recycle passwords and use multi-factor authentication whenever possible
  • Never click on suspicious links

YOU BOUGHT A NEW PC, NOW WHAT?

You successfully got through the online shopping experience for your new device, now what?

Data is often stored on the hard-drive of your PC or computing device. So, when it’s time to make that holiday upgrade to a powerful new system you’ve had your eyes on, you’ll want to safely remove your personal files and information from your old device before disposing of it.

For this, you have options. Some computers already have data removal software. For Dell computers, many models include the Dell Data Wipe feature built into the System Setup. Other brands may have similar software. If your computer does not have software to erase the hard drive, there is software you can purchase.

Once you have removed your files from the computer, what should you do with it? We see out-of-use devices as a valuable resource, one that can go on to be refurbished, reused or recycled. We believe in working with industry to advance sustainability by recycling materials needed to produce our devices.

Through Dell Technologies, we make it simple for our consumers to participate in one of our free consumer recycling programs – taking back any brand, in any condition. In Ireland for example, if your computer is a bit older or no longer working, our Return to Dell mail-back service offers free recycling, even covering the cost of shipping.

TRAVELLING WITH YOUR NEW LAPTOP? TIPS TO EXTEND YOUR LAPTOP BATTERY LIFE

Whether you are closer to home or on the road to visit loved ones over the holiday break, I understand the obstacles that come with technology on the road and the feeling when your battery life runs out along the way. Now that you have your new laptop up and running, let’s make sure the battery life will last as long as possible during your travels this festive season. Here are a few quick tips that may help conserve some battery time:

  • Power off your device before placing it in a laptop bag or other enclosed area.
  • Always use the original AC adapter provided with the laptop. Do not use third-party AC adapters or batteries.
  • Reduce the brightness of the screen.
  • Reduce the amount of open software.
  • Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures. If the system is exposed to extreme cold or hot temperatures, allow it to reach normal temperature before use and before charging.

When it comes to online shopping it’s important not to lose sight of the dangers, even more so in the coming days and weeks. Whether you are buying a new device or disposing of old one, take note of all of the above and make your online shopping experience safe and sustainable.

From everyone at Dell Technologies Ireland, enjoy the festive season.

Majority of Organizations Uncertain They Can Recover from a Ransomware Attack, Says New Dell Technologies Report

The Dell Technologies 2021 Global Data Protection Index (GDPI) findings reveal organizations are facing several data protection challenges driven by the constant threat of ransomware and the consumption of emerging technologies such as cloud-native applications, Kubernetes containers and artificial intelligence.

According to a recent IDC survey, more than one-third of organizations worldwide have experienced a ransomware attack or breach that blocked access to systems or data in the previous 12 months[i]. To help address these rising – and seemingly inevitable – issues, Dell Technologies is introducing new software and services to accelerate virtual machine (VM) backup data availability, simplify management of large data sets, and maintain business continuity while alleviating dependencies on day-to-day cyber recovery operations.

“While ransomware attacks can be devastating for people and businesses, accepting defeat as a foregone conclusion is not the answer,” said Jeff Boudreau, president and general manager, Infrastructure Solutions Group, Dell Technologies. “We understand the stakes have never been higher, and the task of protecting data has never been more complex. As the leading provider of data protection hardware and software, our portfolio addresses this growing challenge by helping customers adopt a holistic cybersecurity and data protection strategy to identify, protect, detect, respond and recover from ransomware and other cyberattacks.”

New GDPI findings reveal increased state of complexity around data protection

The 2021 Dell Technologies GDPI survey of 1,000 global IT decision makers shows organizations are combatting continued data growth and increased data protection complexities. The study found that organizations are managing more than 10 times the amount of data than they did five years ago – from 1.45 petabytes in 2016 to 14.6 petabytes in 2021. Additionally, 82% of respondents are concerned their organization’s existing data protection solutions won’t be able to meet all future business challenges. These concerns are well-founded, with more than 30% reporting data loss in the last year and nearly half (45%) experiencing unplanned system downtime.

GDPI findings include:

  • Sixty-two percent are concerned their existing data protection measures may not be sufficient to cope with malware and ransomware threats, while 74% agree they have increased exposure to data loss from cyber threats with the growth of employees working from home.
  • Over two-thirds (67%) lack confidence that all their business-critical data can be recovered in the event of a destructive cyberattack or data loss.
  • Sixty-three percent believe emerging technologies—such as cloud-native applications, Kubernetes containers, artificial intelligence and machine learning pose a risk to data protection, and the lack of data protection solutions for newer technologies was one of the top three data protection challenges for organizations.
  • On average, the cost of data loss in the last 12 months is approaching four times higher for organizations using multiple data protection vendors as compared to those using a single-vendor approach.

Dell Technologies Study Reveals Data Has Become A Burden Rather than an Advantage for Most Businesses in Europe

Dell Technologies is today releasing the results from a study conducted by Forrester Consulting, showing that for most businesses the proliferation of data has become a burden, rather than an advantage. The sheer volume, velocity and variety of data is overwhelming their technology, people and processes. They have data goals – and many believe that they are data-driven – but they’re held-back by an array of barriers. These include a data skills gap, data silos, business silos, manual processes, data privacy and security weaknesses.

#dellBased on a survey with 4,036 data decision-makers from 45 locations, the findings build upon the biennial Dell Technologies Digital Transformation Index (DT Index) study, which assesses the digital maturity of businesses around the globe. The 2020 DT Index revealed that “data overload/unable to extract insights from data” was the second highest barrier to transformation in Europe. Dell Technologies commissioned the study with Forrester Consulting to understand why and how we can stop data becoming the number one barrier to transformation.

The study identifies several data paradoxes hindering businesses today, including:

  1. The Perception Paradox

Almost two-thirds of respondents in Europe (61 percent) say their business is data-driven and state “data is the lifeblood of their organisation.” But only 21 percent of European businesses testify to treating data as capital and prioritising its use across the business.

The results show that 89 percent of European businesses are yet to progress either their data technology and processes and/or their data culture and skills. Only 11 percent of businesses are defined as Data Champions: companies that are actively engaged in both areas (technology/process and culture/skills).

  1. The “Want More Than They Can Handle” Paradox

According to the research, 71 percent say they are gathering data faster than they can analyse and use, yet 64 percent of businesses in Europe say they constantly need more data than their current capabilities provide.

Consequentially, the explosion in data is making their working lives harder rather than easier: 64 percent of European business leaders complain they have such a glut of data they can’t meet security and compliance requirements, and 62 percent say their teams are already overwhelmed by the data that they have.

Commenting on the results, Jason Ward, Vice-President and Managing Director, Dell Technologies Ireland, said: “At a time when Irish organisations are looking to transform at speed, it’s vital that we uncover the obstacles preventing companies from turning data into actionable insights. Particularly now, with 45% of organisations saying the pandemic significantly increased the amount of data they need to collect, store and analyse.

“The results of our study reveal an interesting paradox. Despite businesses believing they are data-driven, they have more data than they can handle and secure right now. To address this challenge, it’s vital that businesses process data at the edge – where it is generated. The edge can be a video camera, drone, an engine in a car or the whole car. In gaining real-time insights at the edge, organisations in Ireland will be able to roll out new applications and transform the way they do business in a data-driven age. This will accelerate the pace of digital transformation and result in an 800% increase in apps at the Edge by 2024.”

  1. The “Seeing Without Doing” Paradox

While economies have suffered during the pandemic, the on-demand sector has expanded, igniting a new wave of data-first, data-anywhere businesses. However, the number of businesses that have moved the majority of their applications and infrastructure to an as-a-service model is still small (Europe 16%). Even though 61% of organisations in Europe believe it would enable companies to be more agile while 64% see the opportunity to scale to changing customer demands.

  1. Hope on the Horizon

Although businesses in Europe are struggling today, many have plans to create a better tomorrow: 69 percent intend to deploy machine learning to automate how they detect anomaly data, 60 percent are looking to move to a data-as-a-service model and 56 percent are planning to look deeper into the performance stack to rearchitect how they process and use data.
