9 Things About E-Portfolios That Students Should Know About in 2023

Technology has played a significant role in the development and popularity of ePortfolio (electronic portfolios). E-Portfolios can be accessed anytime, anywhere, as long as there’s an internet connection. This accessibility allows individuals to share their portfolios with a global audience, including potential employers, educators, and peers.

Types of E-Portfolios

There are several types of e-portfolios that students can consider creating, each with its own purpose and focus.

Assessment E-Portfolio

This ePortfolio is often required by educational institutions as part of a formal assessment process. Students compile their best work and achievements to demonstrate mastery of specific learning outcomes or competencies. Assessment ePortfolio are typically more structured and focused on meeting specific academic or program requirements.

Developmental E-Portfolio

Its primary purpose is for reflection and growth. Students utilize these portfolios to document their learning journey, track their advancements, and reflect on their experiences. These records typically maintain a more relaxed style and can encompass various elements such as diary entries, self-assessments, and reflections on academic coursework.

Showcase E-Portfolio

This ePortfolio aims to showcase a student’s accomplishments and abilities to prospective employers, internship providers, or graduate schools. They emphasize strengths, accomplishments, and relevant experiences. It can also include well-curated work samples, such as projects, papers, presentations, and other artifacts that showcase abilities.

Course-Based E-Portfolios

Certain instructors necessitate the creation of ePortfolio as a component of particular courses. They document and showcase the tasks completed during the course, encompassing assignments, projects, and reflections. These course-related ePortfolios encourage learners to connect their learning across various assignments and demonstrate their progress throughout the course.

Here are ten things about ePortfolios that students should know about in 2023.

Displays Educational Progression

E-Portfolios serve as an interactive display illustrating educational journeys. They can encompass a variety of materials, including essays, projects, artwork, videos, and other forms of content.

They also offer a tangible record of growth, helping learners reflect on their progress. Additionally, they help students present their abilities to potential employers or academic institutions and elevate their online visibility.

Customize Options

EPortfolios makes it easier to customize content according to individual objectives. There is also the freedom to select the format, arrangement, and structure most accurately showcases accomplishments and endeavors. This personalization helps creates a unique online identity that aligns with a student’s aspirations.

It Needs Ample Time

Creating and curating an ePortfolio can be time-intensive, especially if students must regularly update and maintain it. Balancing this effort with other academic commitments can be challenging. If you have several pending assignments and need more free time to create an ePortfolio, outsource the work to a writer at an essay writing service. The experts in a reputable writing service will ensure you submit quality papers on time.

Not Limited to a Single Use

Digital portfolios are not limited to a single academic course or project. Students can continue to add to their portfolios throughout their educational journey and beyond. This long-term approach provides students with a comprehensive overview of their skills and accomplishments over time.

Demands a Certain Degree of Digital Competence

Creating an ePortfolio requires knowing your way around digital tools. Being careful about how you come across online and protecting your privacy is important. As a result, you should use a safe platform, control who can see your stuff, and make sure what you share looks good.

Digital proficiency is imperative as it equips individuals with the capabilities and understanding needed to adeptly navigate and excel in the digital realm. In the contemporary tech-oriented society, digital literacy surpasses basic computer competencies. It encompasses an array of proficiencies that empower individuals to interact critically with digital data and make well-informed judgments.

Learning to create and maintain ePortfolio is a way to develop digital literacy and proficiency, a valuable skill in today’s technology-driven world.

Use the Right Website Builder

When deciding on the ePortfolio type, you should consider your goals, target audience, and purpose. Additionally, the platform used to create and host your ePortfolio should align with the chosen type and have the necessary features to showcase your work effectively. A good portfolio should be discoverable online. So, look for a builder that provides options for optimizing your portfolio for search engines.

The editing process should also be easy because the content and presentation may need to be adjusted accordingly. So, choose a platform that can grow with you and accommodate additional content as your portfolio expands.

You can read reviews before choosing a specific site to create your ePortfolio. This concept also works when choosing a writing service; students should read a reputable handmadewriting review to make an informed decision.

The About Me Section Is a Must-Have

This section briefly introduces the student, including background, interests, and career aspirations. It sets the tone for the rest of the document and helps viewers understand the context. To make this section longer, provide an overview of the content, especially if you don’t have extensive work experience. This could include a summary of the sections or categories you’ve included in the document and why you’ve chosen to highlight those areas.

Can Be Appropriate For Job and College Applications

E-portfolios can serve as a powerful supplement to job applications and college admissions. They provide evidence of skills, accomplishments, and experiences that can set students apart from their peers. However, it’s best to check the application guidelines of each college to see if they accept ePortfolios as supplementary materials. If they do, make sure to follow their instructions regarding format and submission.

Can Raise Privacy Concerns

Displaying personal achievements and experiences online can raise privacy concerns. Thus carefully consider what content to include, who can access it, and how to protect your private data. Students can protect their privacy by opting for a reputable and secure platform to host an ePortfolio. Look for websites that offer strong data encryption, regular security updates, and allow you to control who can view your content. Then set your site to private or limit access to specific individuals, such as potential employers or college admissions officers.

Lucan Community College takes part in ‘STEM Passport for Inclusion Programme’ designed to unlock new career pathways in STEM

Students from Lucan Community College recently took part in the STEM Passport for Inclusion programme, a unique STEM education and mentoring initiative that aims to provide 5,000 young women from underserved communities with equal opportunities to access STEM education and unlock new career pathways in the digital economy.

Transition year students from Lucan Community College travelled to Microsoft’s campus in Leopardstown in recent weeks for an accelerated version of the STEM Passport for Inclusion programme delivered by the Microsoft Dream Space team.

The STEM Passport for Inclusion programme, developed by Maynooth University in collaboration with Microsoft Ireland, was created to help break down barriers and increase the number of girls from underserved communities entering STEM related careers. A study by Maynooth University indicates that 16% of female pupils from socially disadvantaged areas were not studying a science subject at Higher Level Leaving Certificate.

Microsoft’s Dream Space team has played an instrumental role in the co-design and delivery of the STEM Passport for Inclusion programme. As part of this, the team worked with participating universities to co-develop the Level 6 (NFQ) accredited module, which participating students can complete, equipping them with the knowledge, experience, and additional matriculation support (including extra CAO points) to help them follow a pathway to a third level STEM degree.

Established in 2021, the programme has engaged over 1,250 students to date from schools right across the country. Over the next three years, Microsoft and Maynooth University are ambitious about the reach of the initiative and hope to engage up to 5,000 TY students, with Science Foundation Ireland and the Department of Education providing €600k in funding through the Discover programme and Microsoft a further €600k.

As part of the initiative, Lucan Community College students engaged in three sessions at Microsoft Dream Space and had the opportunity to learn subjects such as coding, engineering and mathematics. In addition, the students participated in the mentoring part of the programme meeting women working across all areas of STEM to learn more about their careers and what their jobs involved. The mentoring element is supported by a number of industry partners including Microsoft, Accenture, RDI Hub, Prodigy Learning, Munster Technological University, Teen Turn and Mercy Inchicore.

Speaking about the students’ experience, Audrey Byrne, Teacher at Lucan Community College, said: “We were delighted to have the opportunity for our students to take part in the STEM Passport for Inclusion programme. It is a really engaging and interactive programme which inspired many of the girls that took part. Students really enjoyed visiting Microsoft Dream Space and the company’s building in Leopardstown where they met with women who work in STEM and see first-hand the doors that can be unlocked by considering a course and career in technology. I’d encourage schools across Dublin to take part so that every student has the opportunity to engage in STEM learning.”

Chloe Bonete, Lucan Community College student and STEM Passport for Inclusion participant, said: “It was an amazing opportunity that I’m glad we could all partake in. Everyone was very welcoming, and we all came out of the experience confident with what we had learned.”

James O’Connor, Microsoft Ireland Site Lead and Vice President of Microsoft Global Operations Service Center said: “At Microsoft, we’re deeply committed to helping young people to engage in STEM learning and shift their perceptions about the role technology can play in their future career choices. As the STEM Passport for Inclusion’s lead industry partner, Microsoft Ireland wants to help create new pathways for girls in STEM so that students from Lucan Community College and other schools across the country can play an active role in shaping our digital world.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the students from Lucan Community College who took part in the programme and who will be graduating in the autumn. Through our Microsoft Dream Space team and our network of mentors, we look forward to expanding the programme and working with Maynooth University to empower 5,000 Transition Year girls from underserved communities to gain a Level 6 STEM qualification.”

Katriona O’Sullivan, Principal Investigator of the STEM Passport for Inclusion and Senior Lecturer at Maynooth University’s Assisting Living and Learning Institute said: “Congratulations to all the girls at Lucan Community College who recently completed STEM Passport for Inclusion. The programme aims to ensure that every girl, irrespective of class or condition, will graduate from school with a STEM qualification, having met a woman in STEM who can inspire and support them. Through the support of Microsoft, Science Foundation Ireland, and the Department of Education, we’re aiming to reach out to over 5,000 students in 180 DEIS schools in Dublin and across the country. We will provide these girls with a university experience, an industry mentor and new pathways to college and careers in STEM.”

IDA Ireland supports IBM multi-year training programme with Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Simon Coveney TD and IDA Ireland today welcomed the news that IBM is launching a further significant phase to a multi-year transformational training programme across its research and digital sales teams in Ireland, which is intended to be worth more than €10m over approximately the next five years. The programme is supported by the Government of Ireland through IDA Ireland.

The skills transformation is part of IBM’s new ‘reimagined workforce’ and includes an innovative bespoke training programme under which IBM intends to hire approximately 35 pre-PhD research candidates to work at IBM’s research’s lab in Dublin, and train across cutting-edge technologies such as AI, quantum, information security and Accelerated Discovery. The pre-PhD programme is undertaken in conjunction with Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. Significant transformative skills training will also be provided to IBM’s digital sales team covering sales leadership, client acquisition and a new early career development programme.

Welcoming the new investment by IBM, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Simon Coveney TD said: “I am pleased to see that IBM is making this new investment of over €10m across its research and digital sales teams in Ireland. The ‘reimagined workforce’ initiative will provide about 35 pre-PhD students with an incredible opportunity to receive the most advanced technological training available from the excellent teachers and resources in Trinity College. A culture of partnership between industry, academia and Government, is essential in promoting innovation and developing a skilled workforce, creating employment opportunities for qualified students into industry. I wish all involved the best of luck.”

Headquartered in Armonk, New York, IBM has been operating in Ireland since 1956 with over 2,500 staff primarily based in Dublin, Cork and Galway; including its IBM Research lab – the only one in the EU – and its pan-European Digital Sales Centre.

Deborah Threadgold, Country General Manager, IBM Ireland said: “IBM’s business has transformed repeatedly over the six-plus decades it’s been established in Ireland. Central to this ability to evolve and grow has been our capacity to attract highly skilled people, and their willingness to keep learning and developing. This innovative multi-year programme will provide the foundation for exciting developments in strategic and emerging technologies and support how we engage with our clients in their digital transformations.”

Commenting on the announcement Michael Lohan, CEO, IDA Ireland said: ‘’This new investment in training by IBM is most welcome news and is very much aligned to IDA Ireland’s Transformation pillar that is central to our current strategy. IBM’s commitment to Ireland over its long history here has played a significant role in the development of the technology and innovation ecosystem we have here today. I wish IBM every success with this multi-million-euro investment.”

Quantum computing is a rapidly emerging technology that harnesses the laws of quantum mechanics, and is being explored as a technology that could solve problems too complex for classical computers.

IBM is also making contributions to help advance Ireland’s quantum research and development capability, including collaborations with other research institutions, multinationals and indigenous companies through its community-driven outreach and IBM Quantum Network to help develop innovative use cases for quantum computing.

SAS-sponsored students present bike data to Irish government officials

Six students from Larkin Community College Dublin, sponsored by analytics and AI leader SAS, have outlined to delegates from the Department of Education how cycling uptake can be increased in Dublin after analysing reams of publicly available data.

The students, participating in a global education initiative called P-TECH, performed analysis on 5.4GB of publicly available dublinbikes station data with the aim of identifying cycling patterns and trends that could be leveraged to improve the uptake of cycling in Dublin. They presented their findings at a showcase event on Wednesday 29 March 2023.

P-TECH, founded by IBM, operates in many countries globally and aims to reform education to prepare young people with the academic, technical and professional skills required for 21st century jobs and ongoing education.  In Ireland there are multiple industry partners as well as five schools and a college participating.

Recent research from SAS underlines the importance of tackling the shortage of data science skills, as  63 per cent of businesses don’t have access to people with the right AI and analytics skills.

Minister for Education, Norma Foley TD, said: “The aim of the P-TECH placement is to provide students with a real-world experience working on different types of projects. Developing new skills, knowledge and understanding how to meet these challenges is a key part of P-TECH. Working with different colleagues and learning in new environments based across the P-TECH Industry Partner sites, each and every student should be proud of the work they have achieved and their accomplishments over the last six weeks.”

As part of P-TECH the students joined the SAS team at its Irish headquarters in Dublin, participated in team building activities and were trained in the use of SAS Visual Analytics, SAS Visual Statistics and project management.

Alan McGlinn, Country Lead for SAS Ireland, says investing in the next generation of data professionals is critical for everyone’s future success. He said:

“We firmly believe that this is not only an investment in their future, but also in the future of our industry and the prosperity of the economy and our country. By sponsoring students to take part in P-TECH, we are not only helping to bring reforms to education and presenting them with real world examples to work on, but also giving young people the essential data skills they need to thrive in the workforce. We are proud to support this global initiative and to play our part in shaping the future of data analytics.”

Other P-TECH industry partners, alongside SAS, include IBM, Irish Life, Salesforce, Cisco, Virgin Media and Irish Water.

SAS supports a number of initiatives aimed at equipping people with the data skills they need to thrive in a modern economy. It founded the SAS STEP programme, a free reskilling and employment initiative to help jobseekers across Ireland and the UK, empowering the workforce and rebuilding for the future.
