CCPC clears Equinix’s acquisition of BT Datacentres Ireland

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has cleared the proposed acquisition of BT Datacentres Ireland by Equinix (Ireland).

Equinix operates six data centres in Dublin, which provide digital infrastructure for cloud, IT, finance, content and media service providers. BT Datacentres Ireland also operates data centres in Dublin, one in Citywest and one in Ballycoolin.

The proposed acquisition was originally notified to the CCPC on January 10, 2025. Following an extended preliminary investigation, the CCPC determined in May 2025 that a full investigation was required to establish if the proposed acquisition would lead to a substantial lessening of competition in the State. This type of detailed further review is commonly referred to as a Phase 2 investigation.

Significant additional information was provided by both parties during the course of the investigation, such that the CCPC is satisfied that the deal can proceed.

The CCPC will publish the full decision on its website within 60 working days, following redaction of confidential information

Information about the merger notification can be found at M/25/003.

Tech Review – Poly Voyager Surround 80 UC Premium BT Headset

The Poly Voyager Surround 80 UC Premium BT Headset might be a pricey headset for most but if you are one who works in an office or works from home it makes sense and it makes sense to be pricey if you want the best in the game. I have tested some older models before and people snubbed the idea these type of headphones can be used for both work and general wearing and when they tried them on they quickly changed their tune on the matter and this is due to the quality of sound and most importantly voice for calls and teams chats and so one, one thing that is clear with these is how good voice sounds no matter what instance you use them in.

The headphones are also comfortable to wear for hours on end which is great and again important for those who would wear them.

There is no boom on these which I prefer with such headphones and these still do a superb jobs on phone calls alone and of course your teams meetings and so on, there is a busy light on these too to let others know you are in fact busy when you are on either which for me is great and stops people annoying you, I hate those who tap you on the shoulder trying to get your attention but this still happens sometimes for those not in the know.

Controls are great which is done with gestures which I am now a fan of after testing several pairs of headphones recently with the same approach and going forward I would like to see this more common than it is today with any headphones.

The sound quality is excellent all round here but voice is what stands out for me on these overall on your teams and phones calls I have never had a pair of headphones that sound so good in this area in particular it is outstanding, and for music they are also great which makes for a great pair of hybrid headphones. On the music front they are fine with all genres highs lows and mids and there is an EQ app but not so much for music but more control over their target demographic.

All round though the sound is impressive they are comfortable and easy to use with apps for all to take even more control to make them your own in what setting you use these in, they are expensive but for me and what they do they are worth every penny and a go to if you work from your office or home like me especially with two devices connected it is a seamless operation and a no brainer choice of headphones to own. Check the video review for more.

Data Edge optimises performance management for BT Ireland’s Network Operation Centre

Network optimisation specialists Data Edge today announces it has successfully delivered a new solution for BT Ireland to overhaul its Network Operating Centre (NOC) and allow it to resolve issues more quickly, enhance network reliability and improve the customer experience.

The solution, which is based on Broadcom’s DXNetOps, combines performance management, fault management, Netflow Analysis, and Virtual Network Assurance. It was designed and implemented by Data Edge with the aim of allowing for better detection of incidents in real time and to reduce false alarms to lower noise on the network, and ultimately better prevent outages.

The new performance management solution has achieved a number of key metrics, as the mean time to repair issues has decreased by 40%, meaning less downtime for BT Ireland’s customers.  The number of alarms has also come down, by 80%, freeing up BT Ireland’s team to focus on delivering the best customer experience instead of responding to erroneous alerts.

BT Irelands challenge was that its NOC was reliant on multiple systems and screens to provide up-to-date analysis and information on issues in its network. It needed a fully integrated and scalable performance management system. Data Edge was chosen to provide a Single Pane of Glass solution to show all network events in one place and grant BT Ireland the ability to easily connect and monitor all of its current and future platforms.

The solution, provided in partnership with Broadcom, has proved to be highly effective and also features full neighbourhood topology, triage functions, as well as third party access to better streamline BT’s services.

Paul Hackett, BT Ireland’s Head of Architecture, said; “Enabling digital customer experiences are of upmost importance to BT, and working with reliable partners like Data Edge makes those digital customer journeys much easier.

“Integrating BT’s systems into a single view, has streamlined our in-life processes, meaning we resolve issues faster than before. We’ve moved from reactive to proactive resolutions, which is critical in the modern marketplace.”

Martin O’Leary, Senior Account Manager, Data Edge, said, “Having worked with BT Ireland for over a decade, we have been by the company’s side as it has grown and developed its portfolio of network and communication services in Ireland. We are very proud to have delivered such a successful and impactful new solution and will continue supporting BT Ireland on its growth journey.”

Gerry O’Hara, BT Ireland’s Head of Network Assurance, commented; “The DXN functionality means we only see the relevant alarms which assists the NOC in resolving issues more quickly than we ever have before. Data Edge has a deep understanding of our networks and operations, and was able to design, implement and manage this highly integrated and effective network management solution for us. Ultimately, it helps us to provide even higher levels of service to our growing partner and customer base. Furthermore, the DXN functionality means we only see the relevant alarms which assists the NOC in resolving issues more quickly than we ever have before.”

Nokia signs 5G deal to become BT’s largest infrastructure partner. #Nokia #5G #BT

Nokia today announced that it has extended its long-term strategic relationship with BT into the 5G arena, following its selection as a 5G RAN vendor for the UK operator. As part of the deal, which will make Nokia BT’s largest equipment provider, Nokia will provide equipment and services at BT radio sites across the UK, helping to evolve BT’s radio access network to 5G and supporting its goal of maintaining the UK’s best network.

BT’s Nokia-powered network, which currently includes Greater London, the Midlands and rural locations, will be extended to also cover multiple other towns and cities across the United Kingdom( Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Brighton, Cambridge, Carlisle, Cheltenham-Gloucester, Chesterfield, Dundee, Exeter, Grimsby, Hull, Ipswich, Lincoln, Newbury, Northampton, Norwich, Peterborough, Plymouth, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, Swindon, Torbay, York). This enhanced Nokia footprint will support BT’s commitments to the UK government around the use of High Risk Vendors (HRVs) in UK network infrastructure.

Nokia will supply its AirScale Single RAN (S-RAN) portfolio for both indoor and outdoor coverage, including 5G RAN, AirScale base stations and Nokia AirScale radio access products. These solutions will enable BT to build on its existing network leadership in the UK  to deliver connectivity and capacity benefits to consumers at ultra-low latencies as well as reducing complexity and increasing cost efficiencies. The deal will also see Nokia optimize BT’s 2G and 4G networks and work alongside BT on the development of the OpenRAN ecosystem.

As part of BT’s network transformation, the operator will also utilize Nokia Software’s ng-SDM and NetAct network management platform, supporting the network evolution to 5G. These build upon the existing network architecture and provide an immediate cornerstone and single platform for new 5G-based services. Nokia will also provide its state-of-the-art Cell Site Gateway product providing key backhaul connectivity.

Nokia will also provide digital design and deployment for a faster time to market as well as optimization and technical support services.

Philip Jansen, CEO, BT Group said: “Digital connectivity is critical to the UK’s economic future, creating jobs and underpinning sustainable growth. That’s why BT is making game-changing investments in full fibre and 5G. In a fast-moving and competitive market, it’s critical we make the right technology choices. With this next stage of our successful relationship with Nokia we will continue to lead the rollout of fixed and mobile networks to deliver stand-out experiences for customers.”

Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO, Nokia, said: “I am delighted that BT has extended its partnership with Nokia on 5G RAN, making Nokia BT’s largest infrastructure partner. Our two companies have collaborated for over a quarter of a century in order to deliver best-in-class connectivity to people across the United Kingdom. We are proud to support BT’s 5G network evolution and look forward to working even more closely together in the years to come.”
