Deepfakes and Hacktivism Take Centre Stage at Cyber Leader Summit in Belfast

Deepfakes have jumped from the pages of science fiction to become a legitimate business risk that could influence polls in the upcoming UK election . That was one of the messages from Deryck Mitchelson, Global CISO at Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), a leading AI-powered, cloud-delivered cyber security platform provider, when he spoke at the Cyber Leader Summit held in Belfast at the Titantic Belfast on the 14th of February. As these sophisticated manipulations proliferate, the integrity of democratic processes faces unprecedented challenges, highlighting the urgent need for robust defences against AI-driven disinformation campaigns.

The one-day event brought together over 110 delegates and experts from Check Point, Microsoft, GitHub and Women in Cyber Security, among others, to explore the biggest cyber threats facing organisations today. It is the first time the event has been held in Belfast, which is fast becoming a hub for major players in the technology space.

During his presentation, Deryck explored the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in relation to cybercrime and its influence on attack methods. He discussed how it has evolved to become a serious instrument in a cybercriminal’s arsenal when executing phishing, ransomware or hacktivism campaigns. “AI is not a new notion; we have been using it as the brain behind our threat intelligence for many years, “said Deryck. “However, the technology has changed so rapidly over the last twelve months and new versions such as Generative AI (GenAI) have made it more attainable for cybercriminals. While these skills were once reserved for technically minded hackers, anyone with access to the internet and free online tools can now generate alarmingly realistic phishing emails with a few good prompts.”

Deryck went on to share examples of how deepfakes, including voice clones, have had an impact on businesses and could potentially influence major events such as the general elections later this year. There have been several incidents recently, including a worker in Hong Kong who paid out £20 million to a fraudster impersonating a CFO during a conference call. However, he was also clear that defenders are using AI to fight fire with fire. He added: “Deepfakes used to be the work of science fiction, but they are now a legitimate risk for businesses and their bank balances. They could also be used to influence public opinion during the upcoming elections.

“It is important that we don’t underestimate the potential impact this technology could have on organisations of all sizes. The good news is that companies like Check Point are leveraging the power of AI and Deep Learning to predict and prevent attacks from happening.”

In the morning, delegates also heard from other industry experts such as Lotem Finkelstein, Director of Threat Intelligence at Check Point. He provided insights into the world of hybrid cyberwarfare, demystifying the role of cybercrime during time of conflict. Other sessions included talks from Lesley Kipling, Chief Advisor at Microsoft on the importance of zero trust and Martin Woodward, VP of Developer Relations at GitHub regarding vulnerability fixes in open source.

The afternoon featured more presentations with Jennifer Cox, Director at Women in Cyber Security advocating for diversity in the industry, before the day finished on a panel discussion where experts covered a range of topics, including bringing new talent into the industry. This was a sentiment shared by Seamus McCorry, Check Point’s country manager, in his closing remarks. He was keen to emphasise the potential for Northern Ireland to become a cybersecurity powerhouse.

Seamus said: “We have a great pool of talent coming through our universities and it is important that we engage and encourage this new generation to live and work in this vibrant city. The cybersecurity industry is a thriving business, and together we can build a resilient future.”

ANGOKA’s Drone Summit returns for a second year

Belfast based cybersecurity firm ANGOKA is to host its second UK & Ireland Drone Summit sponsored by KPMG and the Royal Air Force.

The summit will bring speakers from across Europe to discuss the evolution and revolution of drones, and the important role that cybersecurity plays in the accuracy and security of the communications between devices.

The conference, which will take place on November 20th in KPMG’s Belfast offices, will include a live security demonstration which will see a live hacking attempt to illustrate this landscape and how ANGOKA can mitigate for all eventualities using its secure communication technology.

Highlighting the importance of events like this Shadi Razak, Chief Technology Officer at ANGOKA says: “We’re delighted that the UK & Ireland Drone Summit is returning. With the success of last year’s event, we saw the benefits to the industry in bringing great minds together to discuss how we can transform the regulatory, governance, security and safety challenges to opportunities that harness the good and mitigate the negative impact and foreseen risk of UAV technologies.

“Drones are allowing us to achieve more than ever before and continue to provide opportunities to businesses and the economy. Whilst use of drones is important, the risks of cyber is real, both commercially and physically.

“The conference is bringing together thought leaders and innovators to discuss the benefits, and also the downfalls, that come with UAVs, and how as an industry we can work together to ensure both physical and digital security.”

Belfast-based scientific software company SciLeads has unveiled plans to create up to 50 new jobs over the next two years after announcing its workforce has grown to a team of 50 as of this month.

Launched in Belfast in 2016 by friends Daniel McRitchie, Laura Haldane and James Campbell, SciLeads is an innovative lead generation and market intelligence platform that helps scientific companies identify, engage and close their ideal buyers.

SciLeads has created the most comprehensive and accurate database of scientific researchers, helping sales and marketing teams quickly identify who needs their products for their research.

The company placed 14th in the 2022 Deloitte Technology Fast 50 list, which ranks the fastest growing technology companies based on revenue growth over a four-year period. SciLeads began 2021 with 20 staff but having recruited across a number of roles it reached the milestone of 50 employees by the end of 2022. Now, with a strong pipeline of work, plans to launch new products, as well as further expansion into Asian markets, the company has projected that it will need to double its workforce to 100 by 2024 to manage the demand for its services.

Daniel McRitchie, CEO at SciLeads said:  “We are at an exciting point in our journey where we are the industry leaders in our space but still have massive potential to grow further. We believe our exciting plans for 2023 will enable us to double our headcount again over the next 2 years. We are open to all options in assisting us with our plans, including taking on investment from the right partner.”

SciLeads is trusted by hundreds of scientific companies globally to accelerate sales and drive growth. 93% of its customer base is outside of the UK with its software currently used globally by Fortune 500 companies right down to the smallest start-ups.

Laura Haldane, co-founder and VP of Sales and Marketing at SciLeads added: “Finding talent in today’s market is definitely a challenge, particularly on the technical side. However, our remote first working has helped us to overcome this by hiring anywhere in the world, as well as being flexible with our current staff. We recently had a member of the team ask if they could move to Australia and work for SciLeads there and of course we said yes.

“When we started out, we knew we wanted to create a company with a truly flexible culture and work life balance. We have been working remotely since 2016, encouraging staff to get outside, walk the dog, go to the gym and see the sunshine. As we scale, we are adamant about maintaining this.”

SciLeads has seen the benefits of flexible working with all roles fully remote, along with flexible hours and holidays to ensure people can make their schedule work for them. The company gives each SciLeader £750 every two years so they can make their home office exactly how they want it.
