Addressing the need for high performance and efficiency for AI storage

New advancements from Dell PowerScale, the world’s most flexible,1 secure2 and efficientscale-out file storage system, address increasing customer demands for higher AI and GenAI performance.

Now, with PowerScale OneFS software enhancements, companies can prepare, train, fine-tune and inference AI models more quickly. With new PowerScale all-flash storage systems, based on latest generation Dell PowerEdge servers, customers will see up to a 2X performance increase for streaming reads and writes. 4

Dell PowerScale undergoes validation for NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD 

Through Dell’s collaboration with NVIDIA, customers will be able to take advantage of a validated combination of NVIDIA DGX systems, Dell PowerScale storage and NVIDIA Quantum-2 InfiniBand and Spectrum Ethernet networking to achieve faster and more efficient AI storage. Dell’s solution is expected to be the first ethernet storage solution validated on NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD.

Bringing AI to data wherever it resides

58% of employees in Ireland use AI tools as part of their job

Workhuman, the company revolutionising the way employees celebrate, connect with and appreciate each other in the workplace, today announces new findings from its Human Workplace Index, which found that 58% of employees in Ireland now use artificial intelligence (AI) tools as part of their job. Moreover, some 40% of employees have claimed work carried out by AI as their own. The research shows that of these, half of them were rumbled by a colleague or manager.

The survey of 1,000 full-time employees in Ireland was commissioned by Workhuman and conducted by Pollfish to gain insights into the use of AI in the workplace. It found that 58% of employees in Ireland now use AI tools as part of their job and 30% of all employees are using them frequently.

With 47% of users saying they use generative AI (such as ChatGPT) for drafting emails, while 44% use it for brainstorming, the research suggests that AI is helping employees with some of the more difficult interactions in work. Some 28% of those surveyed have turned to AI for help or inspiration when asking for a promotion – 36% said they would consider it – and 20% have used it to ask for a raise. AI has also helped 22% of employees with the delicate matter of resigning from their job.

The survey also shows that AI can help companies to retain skilled talent. The introduction or increased use of AI would make 46% of employees more likely to stay in their jobs (versus 22% who would be less likely to stay), with 71% of those saying it would make them more productive. Moreover, 70% believe AI will lead to better job satisfaction and a better work-life balance, while the same proportion believe it will create new job opportunities – significantly higher than the 42% who believe AI will eventually replace their job.

One of the key benefits of AI highlighted by Workhuman’s survey is the efficiency gains. The majority (88%) of those using AI in the workplace say that it is increasing their productivity. For 49%, it is reducing their workload, while 47% are spending less time on repetitive tasks, enabling them to be more strategic in how they complete their work. When asked what they do with the time that AI gives back to their day, 50% of those using it said they have social chats with colleagues, 46% help other members of their team, and 42% focus on tasks that they wouldn’t have otherwise had time for.

By supporting people in their roles, the survey suggests that AI is helping to reduce stress among the working population. It found that the majority (91%) of employees say that AI is making their job easier or more manageable, while 86% say it is improving their job satisfaction and 84% say it is improving their sense of wellbeing in the workplace. In fact, Workhuman’s research found that employees who use AI in their job are generally happier than those who don’t. Of those who described themselves as being happy in work right now, 64% are using AI – versus 26% usage among employees who describe themselves as unhappy in work.

Reflecting the power of AI to positively impact the culture of an organisation, such as removing bias from the recruitment process or highlighting unconscious prejudices, many of those working in organisations that are using AI believe it is helping their company to become more diverse (cited by 85%) and more inclusive (82%).

Jonathan Hyland, Chief Technology Officer, Workhuman, said: “Our research shows that there is an increasing level of comfort with AI among the working population. Employees are using it as a tool not only to enhance their work, but also to manage their workloads and stress levels. It is helping with inclusivity, too, with 84% of employees saying that it is supporting more inclusive communications and collaborations with colleagues. As more organisations adopt AI, these kinds of benefits are growing in number and compounding to have a positive impact on wellbeing and the ever-challenging issue of retention. 

“Businesses are realising that AI isn’t going to be optional and that means that their employees will need to understand it and embrace it. Yet, our research found that 20% of those who are working in companies that use AI have received no training in its use or application. It’s important that we keep the human element in the process in order to maximise our use of AI. Employees are constantly evolving and upskilling, and AI should be used to enhance the human experience – not replace it entirely. Employers and their teams must work together to find the AI solutions that work best for everyone. Only then will they be able to realise the true benefits of AI by unearthing the tools that will make a difference.”

One year after the launch of ChatGPT over 300,000 people in Ireland have used AI at work

New research conducted by Deloitte in Ireland shows that a little under 2 in 5 respondents (38%) were not aware of Generative AI. For those who were aware of the technology 49% of them were aware of ChatGPT. Over half of (51%) respondents who have used the technology used it “once or twice to try” or less than monthly, while 6% of respondents use it daily.

Speaking today on the publication of research undertaken with 1,000 Irish respondents on their awareness and use of Generative Artificial Intelligence, Colm McDonnell, Partner Risk Advisory with Deloitte said; “As we approach the first anniversary of ChatGPT’s launch, it is interesting that Deloitte research finds that over 300,000 people in Ireland have used the technology for work purposes. By far the most popular purpose of using Generative AI is for personal purposes while 34% of respondents use it for education. It is clear from these responses that the use of Generative AI will only increase with time and greater adoption. It is imperative that we prepare for increased adoption.”

Deloitte’s research also found that from those who have used Generative AI more than one in three (35%) believe it always produces factually accurate responses, and 31% agree that its responses are unbiased.

Colm McDonnell continued; “From our work we believe that Generative AI adoption is still at the early stages. As it is increasingly utilised, we as a society need to balance the requirements for trust and safety along with the need to harness the potential of technology. In our work with clients, we view trustworthy AI through six dimensions – impartial, transparent, accountable, secure, respectful of privacy and reliable. At Deloitte we believe the new regulations on the way from the European Union will be a crucial element in striking the balance between trust, safety, and the potential opportunities.”

Generative AI in the workplace 

Emmanuel Adeleke, Partner, AI & Data, Deloitte said; “We know from the Deloitte Digital Consumer trends research that 11% of Irish workers have used Generative AI in the workplace. This is despite the fact that amongst those respondents who were aware of these tools, 37% believed their employer would not approve of them using Generative AI for work purposes. It is fair to conclude that employers and employees would benefit from clarity around the acceptable and appropriate use of Generative AI. Furthermore, businesses will also have to look at how they engage with their customers, suppliers and regulators on these technologies. Like all transformative changes a certain lag-time between innovation and response is to be expected but it is vital that those managing businesses are proactive, open and accurate in all conversations on Generative AI. Deloitte’s research shows that AI is here to stay in the workplace, and that is unlikely to change.”

The impact of Generative AI on the workforce is also an issue that is front of mind for a lot of employees. Among those who were aware of the technology over 3 in 5 (62%) believed that Generative AI will reduce the number of jobs available in the future and almost half of respondents (46%) are concerned that Generative AI will replace some of their role in the workforce in the future.

Emmanuel Adeleke continued; “Generative AI presents a wide range of possibilities, such as freeing up time for employees to focus on tasks that matter most to their organisations. Our research shows that some of the workforce are already beginning to experiment to see how they can use, so it is important that employers and their employees communicate effectively about how and where the technology will be introduced, and what benefits it will bring. In Deloitte we believe that far more open and substantive engagement needs to take place about the implications of this new technology on tasks within the firm, both now and into the future.”

Emmanuel Adeleke concluded “While there is increasing industry awareness that Global AI regulations (e.g. the European Union AI Act) will eventually address ethics concerns, some organisations are hesitant to move beyond ad hoc AI experiments until they have regulatory clarity. Additionally, divergence in international approaches to regulation, while not a new phenomenon, will add complexity to the Al agendas in global institutions. Dropbox, Inc, announced a collaboration to supercharge knowledge work and improve productivity for millions of Dropbox customers through the power of AI. 

The companies’ collaboration will expand Dropbox’s extensive AI functionality with new uses for personalized generative AI to improve search accuracy, provide better organization, and simplify workflows for its customers across their cloud content. 

Dropbox plans to leverage NVIDIA’s AI foundry consisting of NVIDIA AI Foundation Models, NVIDIA AI Enterprise software and NVIDIA accelerated computing to enhance its latest AI-powered product experiences. These include Dropbox Dash, universal search that connects apps, tools, and content in a single search bar to help customers find what they need; Dropbox AI, a tool that allows customers to ask questions and get summaries on large files across their entire Dropbox; among other AI capabilities in Dropbox.

Artificial Intelligence: Irish organisations urged to become ‘more familiar’ with future EU legislation

The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) is urging organisations, especially businesses, to become more familiar with upcoming EU legislation around artificial intelligence (AI). As Ireland’s official standards body, it is also encouraging organisations across the country to get more involved in the sector by helping develop future international AI standards.

To support Irish enterprises, NSAI is teaming up with Danish Standards and European Committees for Standardisation (CEN and CENELEC*) to jointly host a webinar on Friday, November 24th called: ‘Future EU legislation on AI and the important role standards play.’ The event is an initiative under the new European Commission High Level Forum on Standardisation and will feature speakers from the European Commission, national standardisation bodies and companies such as Ireland’s SoapBox Labs.

The use of AI in the EU will be regulated by the upcoming AI Act, which has been described as the world’s first comprehensive AI law. Becoming more familiar with that piece of legislation is a recommended step for all Irish organisations, says Marita Kinsella, Head of Innovation Policy and Business Development with NSAI. She said: “To successfully implement the AI Act, it’s critical for organisations and businesses in Ireland to know what practical implications the AI Act will have for them and also importantly, how they can help influence the development of future standards around AI.”

Earlier this yearthe Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail, Neale Richmond T.D. and Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Dara Calleary T.D., launched the AI Standards and Assurance Roadmap with the NSAI.

The roadmap is a key deliverable under Ireland’s National AI Strategy and is a significant step in ensuring that Ireland is at the forefront of change. Its aim is to support Irish enterprises and organisations in embracing AI safely and ethically, through utilising AI standards that are published and in development.

“All types of organisations, such as state agencies, businesses, non-governmental organisations and academic bodies, are encouraged to contribute to the development of future international AI standards,” said Kinsella.

Three quarters of organisations are planning to increase their Generative AI IT spend

Generative AI (GenAI) is the accelerator of the decade, representing a significant and immediate opportunity for organisations. A Dell Technologies GenAI Survey of 500 IT decision makers (ITDMs) with GenAI implementation responsibilities across the US and Europe reveals a growing appetite for GenAI, with the majority of respondents surveyed (78%) saying they are excited about the potential GenAI can have on their organisation. Moreover, three quarters (76%) expect to devote increased IT spend in the next year to pursue AI projects.

With a global economic impact predicted to be between $2.6 trillion and $4.4 trillion annually, results suggest organisations are solidifying their GenAI approaches. Of those who have moved beyond a pilot stage, 87% say they believe GenAI is on track to deliver meaningful results, and 80% report they have implemented centralised decision-making and/or centres of excellence. In terms of how they deploy solutions, 82% of ITDMs prefer to build an on-premises or hybrid approach to GenAI, with security, cost and control as leading factors to this approach (37%).

Organisations seem poised to capitalise on the opportunity – 44% of respondents say their organisations are at the early to mid-stage in their GenAI journey and nearly half (49%) expect to see meaningful results within six months to a year.

The findings reveal more than three quarters (76%) believe its impact will be significant or transformative (significant: 54%, transformative: 22%). Top impact areas include productivity gains, streamlined processes and cost savings.

While investment in GenAI is well underway, 37% of respondents said their organisations are somewhat or very hesitant to adopt GenAI. The UK shows the most concern, with almost half (49%) of respondents reporting hesitancy, more than double that of France (22%). The key barriers driving organisational hesitancy are security, technical complexity, and data governance.

Of those who use GenAI professionally, respondents in U.K. (46%) and U.S. (45%) report using it at least once a day. Respondents from all locations also report higher personal GenAI use, suggesting that ITDMs with GenAI responsibilities are upskilling in their personal time. The UK is at the forefront of personal usage with 64% using GenAI once or more a day, followed by Germany (59%), France (58%), and the US (54%).
