62% of IT leaders say AI will make their company’s services redundant within five years

A new survey from Irish IT services provider Auxilion, and supported by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, reveals that 62% of IT leaders in Ireland believe Artificial Intelligence (AI) will make their company’s services redundant in three to five years.

The research – carried out by Censuswide and involving more than 100 IT leaders and decision-makers in large enterprises across Ireland – also found that nearly two in five (38%) would leave their job if their organisation did not invest emerging technologies like AI.

Some three quarters (75%) of IT leaders are using AI to do their jobs and overall, a similar proportion of organisations (78%) are currently deploying same. Despite this uptake, nearly a quarter of IT leaders (24%) do not feel adequately trained to make the most of emerging technologies like AI.

That may explain why more than a third (36%) identified AI and machine learning as a key area of focus for the next 12 months. In terms of the IT areas that are being prioritised this year, IT service desk (49%) was most cited, followed by cybersecurity solutions (45%) and cloud infrastructure (42%).

Cloud remains key

In fact, the survey found that 85% of enterprises surveyed are now using the cloud – an increase of 8% compared to similar research conducted last year. On average, companies who have adopted cloud are using it to host nearly half (47%) of their workloads, applications, and processes.

Of the companies who have already made the move to cloud, 84% say their strategy is meeting their expectations – a marked improvement of 12% on the previous year. However, almost two thirds (65%) think their current cloud strategy is limiting business goals and 61% believe it is limiting staff.

As for the technology itself, 71% say cloud is a more cost-effective approach for their business and of those who have adopted cloud, 83% feel it is more secure for their business. Even still, over two thirds (67%) are worried about cloud security threats over the next 12 months, with 80% providing regular cloud security training to staff.

As well as concerns over security threats, three-quarters (75%) of respondents who have adopted cloud admitted that a cloud outage would be catastrophic for their business and have a serious impact on service delivery.

Commenting on the results, Donal Sullivan, Chief Technology Officer, Auxilion, said: “There’s no doubt about it, AI is here to stay. What remains to be seen is if, and how, Irish businesses leverage it. Our research suggests that those who don’t will lose out in terms of both talent and customers.

“Meanwhile, those that do will get ahead of the curve by using AI to enhance their offering and drive growth. In other words, their services won’t become redundant, but be elevated and in demand.

“Similarly, companies who lack a solid IT foundation or fail to adapt their cloud strategy are throwing away the advantage that technology offers. It’s a differentiator and innovator for businesses, but only for those who act, and react, fast enough.”

Maples Group Advances AI Strategy with Global Rollout of Harvey AI Partnership

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group’s law firm, is expanding its collaboration with Harvey AI (“Harvey”), the OpenAI-backed legal AI platform, to enhance its award-winning legal and professional services for the benefit of clients. The international law firm has long been at the forefront of innovation in law and regulation and this latest step follows a rich tradition of bringing additional value and services to the market.

Following a carefully managed pilot of generative AI among a sandboxed group of senior lawyers and professionals, the firm is now deploying Harvey to over 140 global Partners and a select group of senior professionals to explore how the technology can deliver even better outcomes for clients, while enhancing the work experience for its people.

The Maples Group recently held its annual flagship event, ‘The Maples Investment Funds Forum’, attended by over 350 international lawyers and investment professionals. A key theme of this year’s Forum was generative AI and included a fireside chat with Suril Patel, VP of Partnerships at Harvey AI, who presented an update on the latest developments in AI and a demonstration of how the Group is exploring the use of AI.

Harvey, a secure generative AI platform for sophisticated professional services, has earned the trust of leading international law firms, in-house teams, professional service providers and private equity firms. The company brings together engineers from the best AI research labs and lawyers from the most prestigious firms in the world to develop cutting-edge, specialised models that enable secure generative AI workflows and research for lawyers.  Harvey is designed to support the firm’s lawyers and professionals in a wide range of their daily projects and work tasks. The technology enables teams to take a creative and ambitious approach to enhance legal service delivery, both in respect of existing workflows and in the delivery of new capabilities which will benefit our clients and deepen the value we bring.

Ireland Managing Partner Peter Stapleton, who sponsors the Maples AI project, said, “The Maples Group has always valued and invested in innovation, advising at the cutting-edge of today’s laws and regulations to help our clients to be at the forefront of what they do. We have increasingly harnessed technology to deliver superior services to our clients and we invest heavily in LegalTech and RegTech solutions. Having been one of the first firms to start working with Harvey in late 2022, I’m excited that we are now taking our AI journey to the next level. And I look forward to many more conversations with our clients and partners in the industry as we work together to unlock the potential of this technology.”

Global Managing Partner Jonathan Green adds, “Generative AI will transform how we deliver legal services, but it will never replace our lawyers. The most effective work that we do in the future will combine the best of both people and technology. And in fact, our people’s legal expertise, business acumen, and client trust will matter more, not less. “

Harvey co-founder Winston Weinberg adds: “We are proud to partner with the Maples Group, who share our vision of using generative AI to enable lawyers to take legal services to the next level. They have been a key collaborator in assessing and developing our platform, and we look forward to working with them to discover new opportunities and outcomes for their clients and lawyers.”

Notably, a core team of the firm’s lawyers and technologists have been working with Harvey since late 2022 while it was still in beta. The firm established a carefully structured and sandboxed pilot, following a thorough risk review, limited to using only internal data and documentation, and with all output supervised by senior staff. The firm is now rolling Harvey alongside a global training programme, having developed an understanding of where the technology can be most helpful for clients and implemented safeguards to ensure quality and security.

HP’s Work Relationship Index Reveals AI’s Potential to Unlock Better Relationships with Work

Today at the HP Amplify Partner Conference, HP Inc. announced new findings from its Work Relationship Index, a comprehensive study that explores employees’ relationships with work around the world. The study, which surveyed more than 15,600 respondents across 12 countries, reveals that while the world’s relationship with work is strained and employee expectations are rising, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is seen as a key to unlocking better relationships with work.

“Workers around the world are looking to senior leadership for guidance on how to navigate the AI terrain effectively: the stage is set for business leaders to seize the opportunity to both empower their employees and drive success,” states Val Gabriel, Managing Director of HP Ireland.

“AI represents a significant opportunity to transform our work dynamics and unlock a more positive and productive environment for all. To foster greater understanding and acceptance of AI – and ensure employees know how to reap its benefits – business leaders must take the initiative to educate employees on AI’s potential and spearhead its effective integration.”

The World’s Relationship with Work Is Strained: AI Can Help

In today’s global workforce, there’s a notable strain in the relationship between individuals and work, with just 27% of knowledge workers reporting a healthy work relationship. Simultaneously, knowledge workers’ expectations of their relationship with work have surged, with 58% globally reporting that their expectations have increased over the past three years. This is particularly pronounced in growing economies, at 71%, compared to 50% of workers in mature economies.

AI’s potential to foster healthier relationships with work is well understood by the workforce – with business leaders and IT decision makers leading the way. 54% of knowledge workers, 72% of business leaders and 70% of IT decision makers see the role AI can play in improving work-life balance. To a similar extent, employees believe that AI can streamline tasks and make their job easier (business leaders 75%, knowledge workers 58%).

Notably, in growing economies, 76% of knowledge workers think AI will make their job ‘easier’ and 75% ‘more interesting’ (vs. 48% and 44% respectively in mature economies).

Business Leaders Must Guide AI Integration

The gap between business leaders, ITDMs and knowledge workers demonstrates the need for business leaders to effectively communicate the benefits of AI and educate employees on how to integrate it into their work processes – to help drive better business outcomes at the same time as strengthening individuals’ relationships with work. The survey showed that uncertainty persists regarding how best to use AI and take full advantage of it:

  • Almost 2 in 5 (42%) individuals feel unsure of when to use AI in the workplace.
  • 41% feel ill-equipped to harness AI’s full potential in their role.

With 73% of business leaders and 66% of knowledge workers advocating for proper AI training, there’s a clear call for organisations to prioritise upskilling initiatives to empower their workforce in embracing AI technologies.

Mozilla Rise25 awards hits Dublin this year

Mozilla’s Rise25 Awards are back for another inspiring year and now is your chance to nominate the people you believe are making a meaningful impact in your online community. Mozilla will be honoring 25 people who are leading that next wave of AI — who are using philanthropy, collective power, and the principles of open source to make sure the future of Ai is responsible, trustworthy, inclusive and centered around human dignity. 2024’s Awards will feature familiar categories from last year’s, but with a special emphasis on trustworthy AI.

2023 was indeed the year of AI, and as more people adopt it, we know it is a technology that will continue to impact our culture and society, act as a catalyst for innovation and creation, and be a medium to engage people from all walks of life in conversations thanks to its growing ubiquity in our everyday lives.

Mozilla is rising to the challenge through several key efforts: supporting AI builders as they take on the tech giants, introducing our own AI products in Firefox and beyond, and advocating for policies that prioritize human interest over corporate agendas. By recognizing and celebrating the people who are shaping the web today, we are contributing to a positive future for all. We know we cannot do this alone: At Mozilla, we believe the most groundbreaking innovations emerge when people from diverse backgrounds unite to collaborate and openly trade ideas.

Five winners will be selected from each of the below categories, to make up our 2024 Rise25 cohort:

Advocates – Guiding AI towards a responsible future

These are the policymakers, activists, and thinkers ensuring AI is developed ethically, inclusively, and transparently. This category also includes those who are adept at translating complex AI concepts for the broader public — including journalists, content creators, and cultural commentators.
