Galway-based EnteraSense secures €3.5m funding through Horizon 2020 and private investment. #MedTech #EnteraSense

Galway-based medtech startup EnteraSense has achieved a double milestone, raising €1 million in a Seed round as well as securing €2.5 million through one of the latest European Union Horizon 2020 grants.

The combined €3.5 million will be used to help commercialise EnteraSense’s technology, build the team to nine members, and further the field of diagnostics.

Founded by serial entrepreneur and CEO, Donal Devery, EnteraSense has developed a capsule that can detect bleeding in the gastrointestional tract. Post surgical patients who are at risk of further bleeding can have the capsule attached to their stomach to monitor and detect bleeding and thus ensure they get appropriate and quick treatment if needed. To complement this, patients who present in ER and have suspected GI bleeding can swallow the capsule for a quick and easy diagnosis. This will mitigate unnecessary endoscopies which are invasive and in a lot of circumstances unnecessary.

Devery, along with EnteraSense MD, Daragh Sharkey and Programme Manager Chiara Di Carlo, has licenced the groundbreaking technology from Harvard University in Boston. The NDRC-backed company has successfully run initial trials to prove and validate the capsule. EnteraSense will move towards ‘First in Human’ studies by Q3 2019 and hope to be commercial with FDA and CE approval by mid 2020.

The two-year, H2020 EIC-FTI project grant – itself valued at €3.55m – is spread across four parties, with EnteraSense leading the research. Anecto, also based in Galway, Steripack (Poland) and a hospital in the Czech Republic are the other members of the project and will add significant expertise and value to the overall project aim of launching the product for patient use by mid 2020.

Each of these parties have specific and quantified deliverables with the overall goal of commercialising EnteraSense’s technology, and this grant significantly accelerates this process.

NDRC invested in EnteraSense in 2016, providing an integrated offering of knowledge, experience, expertise and a modest amount of capital to help EnteraSense attract follow-on investment. This initial funding validated the project and allowed EnteraSense to leverage the reputation of NDRC to attract further investment from valued shareholders.

EnteraSense’s current investor base includes physicians from the USA, a private equity fund based in Ireland, a Dubai based strategic investor and local Galway business people.

Donal Devery, founder of EnteraSense: “We want to improve patient outcomes and drive cost down for the health system. Each process and function within the deliverables associated with the grant will help us achieve this goal.

“The fact that physicians are among our investors shows just how exciting EnteraSense’s product is. The EU’s backing only underlines that.”

Daragh Sharkey, MD, EnteraSense: “The most important aspect of this grant is that the European Union has independently validated our project. EnteraSense ranked 4th out of 200+ entries and this shows the potential and value of the project.

“We are lucky to have such a strong and visionary team behind this project and now it is complimented by very focused and committed partners who believe in our vision and technology. This is further re-in forced by the early stage investors who we have on board.”

Dr Matt Ben, Gastrointestinal Physician New York, investor in EnteraSense: “As a GastroIntestinal physician, I could immediately see the potential of this unique technology. Upper GastroIntestinal bleeding has a high mortality rate and can cause serious problems for patients and a solution to mitigate this is very welcome.

Zoi Launches Real-Time Translation for International Meetups, Showcasing at #CES2019 #ZOI #AI

The need to remove language barriers has never been greater. According to a 2018 survey of international meeting professionals by Successful Meetings, international meetings 94% believe that the number of international meetings will either increase or stay the same over the next twelve months; 94% also responded that the budget for international meetings will also either increase or stay the same during the same time period. It’s no surprise that 49% of professional international meeting planners identify “communications / language barriers” as the “most challenging aspect.”

Meeting veterans clearly agree that language barriers are hugely challenging — and the resulting “cultural misunderstandings” can sabotage any change of an effective communication channel.

Creating a Better Platform
Companies know that expanding their operations and influence globally requires a workforce that can communicate effectively in multiple languages; however, roughly two-thirds of business executives surveyed by Forbes Insights said that less than half of their employees have professional proficiency in more than one language. So having a multilingual team, while an ideal solution, is not always the most realistic for many companies operating globally.

Nick Yap, CEO of Zoi, says that his company is poised to ease the challenge of multi-language meetings and presentations: “We are offering real-time translation and searchable transcription records all under one roof.”

Zoi will be launching its AI-powered software assistant in January at the CES Show 2019 in Las Vegas at Eureka Park / Holland Pavilion, Hall G 51726, stand 25, Sands Convention Center (Tech West) and it will be deployed by the event’s organization during all plenary sessions in Holland Pavilion.

Its combined features of live-subtitling, auto translation and storage serve to remove language barriers, create a shared knowledge center and save both time and misunderstandings for those looking to maximize their meeting efficiency on the global stage. Please visit www.zoimeet.com for more information, including pricing options. Offerings range from trial version, to Organization or Professional Subscription.

Google Releases its Irish ‘Year in Search’ Results. #Google #Ireland #Search

As 2018 comes to a close, the annual Google Year in Search results provide a telling snapshot of what caught the interest of the Irish over the last 12 months. We are a bunch of nosey and inquisitive fcukers and just like to know what is going on and use Google to do the rest.. Not only for just random search on news but “How to….” is a very interesting topic to and reveals what have been looking for this year.

The FIFA World Cup was Ireland’s top-trending Google search for 2018, despite Ireland’s absence in the tournament, with soccer’s quadrennial competition trending most strongly in our searches for 2018. Staying with sports, the epic Ireland vs New Zealand match last month – which saw us overcome the world’s best team for the first time at home – was our 7th overall top trending search in this year (coming 2nd in sports searches overall). But in terms of quantity, golf tournaments took three of the top 10 spots in sport, horse racing took two spots, and tennis and MMA shared one spot each.

Musical tastes were reflected in the appearance of Avicii as our second top-trending topic for 2018. The electronic dance musician – famous for the song “Wake Me Up” – sadly passed away in April of this year, and his popularity on this island was reflected in our increased Googling of his name at that time. Dolores O’Riordan, the Irish icon and former lead singer of The Cranberries, was another musical notary that also passed too early this year – she was our 5th top-trending Google search in 2018. Finally, the perennial curiosity that is Eurovision was our 6th top-trending musical topic overall, driven no doubt by Ireland’s first inclusion in the final for five years.

Ireland’s ambivalent approach to healthy eating was reflected in our food-related searches this year: searches for healthy “Operation Transformation” recipes were closely followed by our less healthy interest in cake recipes. Perhaps guilty feelings lead to “healthy dinner recipes” coming 3rd in the rankings, before cravings set in again with “bread recipes” occupying 4th spot. Interestingly, “vegan recipes” made their first appearance in Google’s top trending search list, perhaps indicating a move away from an Ireland raised on black pudding and rashers.

Politically, we were inspired to ask “how to register to vote” (1st in the “how to…” list) as well as “what is blasphemy?”, “what is the backstop?” and “what is the 8th amendment?” (1st, 3rd & 5th in the “what is…?” list” respectively). But the seriousness of politics this year was mitigated by our love for escapist films, with the musical melodrama A Star Is Born taking top spot in the movie rankings, and also registering as the only movie to appear in the overall top ten list. Comic book adaptations take four of the top ten movie spots, hinting at a juggernaut of a trend that doesn’t show signs of slowing, with musicals occupying three spots and drama/thrillers rounding off the list, including the Irish Famine-based movie Black 47 in fourth spot.

Finally, former actress and now new Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, made an unsurprising appearance in the top list this year, coming in at third place, while Google’s “How to…?” list gives an interesting insight into the minutiae of our lives in Ireland over the past year. We asked “how to build an igloo” and “how to bleed radiators” in response to February’s Beast from the East, but also “how to get rid of fruit flies” during the summer’s heatwave. The perennial “how to lose weight” was in third spot and our tech worries centred around “how to get old snapchat back” and “how to turn off automatic updates” … perhaps, in terms of technology at least, the Irish have shown that we don’t like change?

New GPS tracking system allows companies to manage assets in a smarter and more efficient way. #GPS #FleetManagement

Verizon Connect is expanding its fleet management system REVEAL with a solution that enables businesses in Ireland to manage assets in addition to their fleet of vehicles.

With the launch of the new GPS tracking system for assets, companies can gain insight into the location and performance of valuable assets such as cranes, trailers and excavators. As a result, they will be able to deploy their assets optimally, plan maintenance more efficiently and help reduce the risk of theft and other types of unauthorised usage.

Derek Bryan, EMEA Vice President, Verizon Connect: “At Verizon Connect, we are committed to ensuring that businesses in Ireland have the tools to harness the power of data from every company asset. Many companies in Ireland already rely on our solution to help them manage their vehicles and employees but being able to track other valuable equipment and assets will further help them drive efficiencies, lower operational costs and improve their planning.”

Insight in location, usage and productivity assets

Similar to REVEAL’s system for vehicles, the new asset tracking system offers the ability to access data in both near real time and historically to understand where equipment is and where it has been. It is also possible to see if machinery is running and how often it is used. This gives users and managers insights into equipment utilization and determining which assets should be moved elsewhere within the organisation or perhaps cycled out of use.

Asset maintenance and control

REVEAL’s asset tracking solution also offers users a variety of options to help minimise theft risk and other unauthorised usage. For example, it is possible to set up alerts that send managers a warning when equipment is turned on or moved outside of working hours – or when machinery is moved outside of its designated location.

To help companies plan the maintenance of their assets more efficiently and maximise uptime, REVEAL’s asset tracking solution also enables companies to record when trailers and other equipment are due for maintenance. For each asset, the system keeps a log and alerts can be configured based on planned maintenance or predetermined options, including engine hours.

Night Sight adapts to you and the environment so you can capture the moment effortlessly. Here are some additional tips to get the most out of your phone’s camera in low light:

  • If you’re taking a photo of someone, ask them to hold still for a few seconds before and after you press the shutter button.
  • Hold the phone steady. If you can, try propping it against a stable surface.
  • Make sure the camera lens is clean. It can accumulate oil from fingerprints, creating blurry and soft photos.
  • Try tapping on or around your subject to help your camera focus when taking photos in very dark conditions.
  • Avoid pointing your camera at bright light sources, which may cause unwanted reflections in your photo.
  • Cameras don’t work in complete darkness, so you’ll still need some light to capture a photo.

Dell EMC and GirlCrew host third SupperClub to mark Dublin Start-up Week #StartUpWeek #DellEMC

The third Dell EMC Supper Club, in partnership with GirlCrew has been announced to take place on Wednesday 21st November to mark Dublin Start-Up Week 2018. The Dell EMC SupperClub is an initiative to support female entrepreneurs as they work to grow their businesses and their networks.

The Supper Club meets regularly, bringing female entrepreneurs at similar stages on their start-up journey together around a table to exchange advice and to share ideas and strategies for success.

Dell EMC has a strong track record of supporting budding female entrepreneurs. The company runs the Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network (DWEN), an annual gathering of female entrepreneurs established to address some of the challenges faced by women when starting and growing their business. In the most recent summit in Toronto, DWEN brought together female leaders from across the globe to connect with networks, sources of capital, knowledge and technology.

Building on that success, a special DWEN Women Funding Women event will be held in Dublin in early February to create new links between female entrepreneurs and potential investors who can fuel their scale-up success.

Commenting on the series, Aisling Keegan, Vice-President and Commercial General Manager, Dell EMC Ireland said: “Dell EMC is delighted to announce the third in our SupperClub series that look to nurture today’s start-up female entrepreneurs to become tomorrow’s scale-up success stories. We have consistently received feedback from women entrepreneurs from around Ireland highlighting the value of fostering a network and facilitating the exchange of ideas with other female entrepreneurs as invaluable in helping them to grow their businesses.

“At each SupperClub, we bring twenty female entrepreneurs together around a table to share their experiences and successes over dinner. It’s an exciting and intimate series for us to be involved in, where our team members from Dell EMC have the opportunity to share advice on how to build for growth and scale from day one, how to navigate international markets, embrace digital transformation and access finance. I’m really looking forward to the upcoming one marking Dublin Start-Up Week, it’s set to be a great night.”

Pamela Newenham, Co-Founder, GirlCrew said: “We’re excited to be working with Dell EMC on this series which has proved to be really successful since it started. GirlCrew is a platform for women to make friends and these SupperClubs perfectly complement what we do. We love how relaxed the atmosphere is, yet our attendees get so much out of the night while really enjoying themselves. I have no doubt the 21st November will be another great night as we have some great speakers lined up!”
