From the SmartHome app to the digital running shoe. #IFA #TecWatch #IFA15

Once again IFA TecWatch demonstrates the innovativeness of the digital world – Over 50 exhibitors for the first time, from four continents – The five theme days also feature more than 50 startups

Berlin, 14 July 2015Startups offer the potential for future growth, as well as solutions both large and small for the Internet of Things, the next generation of digital media, the use of 3D printing in creative processes, wearables for fun and health, education and training in the digital world – Hall 11.1 is the venue where IFA Watch presents ideas for tomorrow’s markets. IFA is a centre for innovation, providing a link between research, young entrepreneurs with new startups, industry and trade, for a vibrant exchange of knowledge, information and fresh business ideas. This year’s TecWatch programme features 55 exhibitors and partners from 15 countries, including the USA, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Japan and Israel. There are also some 50 startups, whose exhibits are grouped together on a number of different theme days.

Five fascinating theme days devoted to startups
In 2014 technically minded visitors to IFA, along with journalists, experts and decision-makers from trade and industry, took a keen interest in the displays staged by the founders of a number of new business ventures. The Startup Day, organised jointly by TecWatch and the German Startup Federation, is an ideal opportunity for these new companies to present papers, pitches and panel discussions as a means of introducing their technical visions and business models. IFA 2015 offers an even bigger stage for TecWatch and the German Startup Federation to continue their collaboration, with even more startup exhibits and a variety of key subjects spread over several days at the trade show.

SmartHome and the Internet of Things
Numerous small and medium sized companies are presenting their solutions for the interconnected home, where the Internet of Things is exerting a growing influence on our everyday lives. International organisations and alliances are also making their own contributions to this topic, and among them are Z-Wave and the Allseen Alliance.

One particularly fascinating aspect is the increasing number of ideas that are intended to make complex technology more user-friendly, overcoming compatibility problems and linking isolated applications.

The next generation of digital media
The web and broadcasting meet on screen, merging seamlessly thanks to technologies based on the HbbTV standard. IFA TecWatch is presenting the next generation for the first time, in the form of HbbTV 2.0, with exciting innovations that also involve tablet displays as a second screen. Another topic of particular relevance to the future of broadcasting is DVB-T2, the latest generation of terrestrial television, which is being introduced in Germany for the first time with highly efficient HEVC video coding and has been developed for Ultra HD. IFA TecWatch is showing what can be achieved with this new transmission technology. TecWatch is also demonstrating groundbreaking solutions in the field of sound, for example with new codecs, providing interactive selection and individual mixing of various audio tracks. And the Future of Ultra HD introduces spectacular technologies for HDR (High Dynamic Range) and extended colour spaces. A number of special demonstrations are equally interesting, showing how Ultra-HD sequences can be transferred from a large screen to a tablet

3D printing and wearables
In addition to printer hardware, exhibitors are also presenting software for 3D printing, services and solutions for creating templates as well as scanners for analyzing objects. These also include a man-sized installation capable of carrying out a complete 3D body scan in fractions of a second. One of the most interesting wearables is a running shoe with a built-in sensor, which registers every single step and supplies all the information required for a digital training programme.

Research and system development
Universities and research institutes regularly feature in TecWatch. Among them this year is Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, represented by three of its institutes, Heinrich Hertz and Fokus from Berlin, as well as the Fraunhofer IIS Institute, Erlangen. All three are presenting some fascinating and innovative examples of media technology. Colleges and universities based in Berlin and Brandenburg are presenting projects covering all aspects of digital living, together with spin-offs, startups and other partners. The University of Kyoto is represented by research projects dealing with information and media technology.

Education in the digital world
A joint presentation by the industry associations VDE, ZVEH and ZVEI focuses on promoting innovation, under the slogan ‘Fit for the digital world’. These three organisations are providing details about education and training in the digital world in an effort to interest more young people in technical careers, thereby attracting the young people who will introduce the innovations of the future and launch new businesses.
Work stations are being set up to provide a hands-on experience. A mini e-house has been created by trainees to show how young people are developing a greater affinity for this subject. And there is also a Girls’ Day, which is intended to encourage girls and young women to take up technical careers.

HERE to lead vehicle hazard warning pilot in Finland. #HERE #Maps #Nokia

The project is the first to implement system in accordance with EU ITS directive

HERE, a leader in mapping, navigation and location services, has been selected by Finnish traffic agencies to lead a pilot project to enable vehicles to communicate safety hazards to others on the road.

The pilot, which will start in 2016, intends to assess the capability of current and emerging mobile network and location cloud technologies in supporting the timely communication of critical safety information, such as black ice or an animal on the road, sudden traffic build-up, or an accident.

FinlandPilot-1

In this pilot, to test the capability of the proposed technology architecture, drivers will voluntarily share notifications about safety hazards and changing road conditions initially via a smartphone. The aim, however, is that this architecture would later also support low-latency communication, via a cloud, of data generated by a vehicle’s on-board sensors and the surrounding road infrastructure to other vehicles and smart devices on the road.

According to a recent forecast from automotive technology research firm SBD, by 2020 there will be some 33 million vehicles sold annually with built-in connectivity, generating more than 163 million terabytes of data each year via their on-board cameras and sensors. When shared across the road network using 4G/LTE and future 5G network technologies, these data could be utilized by vehicles to give them an awareness of road conditions beyond the reach of their sensors, and thus enable the driver or the vehicle itself to better plan driving maneuvers. 5G technology raises the prospect of road hazard warnings being communicated via the cloud to relevant vehicles in a fraction of a second.

HERE is tasked by the Finnish Transport Agency (FTA) and Trafi, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency, to lead the pilot, called Coop, and will work together with traffic information management service company Infotripla in implementing it. The project will be the first to implement a road hazard warning messaging system as described in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Directive set out by the EU. This particular pilot does not require the deployment of any additional roadside infrastructure, such as DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communications) equipment, although HERE is pursuing an agnostic approach with its technologies that will allow for connections with other infrastructure if required.

George Filley, who heads HERE’s Digital Transportation Infrastructure program, said: “With this project, we will explore how technology within our reach today could make driving safer as cars get connected. There will be enormous amounts of data generated by a car’s on-board sensors that can be collected, analyzed and shared with others on the road. An important piece of the puzzle is to figure out how to provide relevant, low-latency information to the right people at the right time, and that is a problem we believe we can solve.

Alain Dunoyer, Head of the Safe Car division of SBD, the automotive technology research firm, said: “The technology exists to identify road hazards with increasing levels of accuracy – it is great to see Finland partnering with a technology leader like HERE to take the next step of ensuring this information reaches a broader population of drivers who will benefit from this life-saving information the most.”

The first phase of the pilot will focus on ensuring the technical maturity of the system. The second phase begins in the first half of 2016 on the E18 highway, the main road between Helsinki and Turku, as well as the Ring I and Ring III highways in the Greater Helsinki area, with initially up to 1,000 drivers expected to take part. The pilot phase is expected to complete by the end of 2017.

HERE has been developing location cloud technology for several years, and currently provides content and services via the cloud – including maps, routing and real-time traffic information – to automotive and Internet companies as well as government transportation agencies.

In a related effort, HERE is developing next generation high definition (HD) and live maps to power a new class of driver experiences globally, including deployment in highly automated vehicles in 2018. To help accelerate the deployment of a live map for vehicles, HERE last weekpublished an interface specification that defines how sensor data gathered by vehicles on the road can be ingested by a cloud. HERE intends for this interface specification to become a standardized way for vehicles to send to the cloud the rich variety of data gathered by their on-board sensors. With a standard interface specification, the data generated would be analogous regardless of vehicle manufacturer and could be pooled, processed and analyzed quickly to create an enhanced view of road and traffic conditions.

Shazam for birdwatcher fans now available #Chiropmatic App. by @jimboireland. #Birds #Apps #iOS

There is plenty of apps for music lovers to detect music such as SoundHound,Spotsearch and Shazam, but what about birdwatchers who are interested in knowing what’s in their locale or out on an excursion?

Chirpomatic is a new British-made app that automatically identifies birds by their song (often referred to as ‘Shazam for birdsong’). It is available in the Apple App Store now, ready for the start of the peak birdsong season. This initial release is just the beginning for Chirpomatic. The first version will identify 60 sounds from parks and gardens in Britain and Ireland. This number will increase rapidly as the app is expanded to cover other habitats.

The app is being created by iSpiny, specialists in nature apps and developers of the
very popular Chirp! birdsong app. Initially for iPhones and iPads, an Android version
will follow.
Chirpomatic has been over a year in development and employs the latest cuttingedge
techniques in machine learning.
Dr Hilary Wilson from iSpiny explains, “Developing an effective automatic identifier
for bird sounds is a huge technical challenge. Human hearing is marvellous and
can pick out a bird from in amongst other sounds even if it’s a distance away, but a
microphone records everything. On top of that, birds have a very varied repertoire
of songs and calls. Recognising which bird is singing is like using speech
recognition to pick out voices in a crowd!”
The iSpiny team’s experience as naturalists and in making apps has led them to
include a couple of innovative features, not found in any other bird app:

Bird-safe mode
Some nature reserves ban the use of mobile devices on their sites
because recorded songs can disturb birds. Chirpomatic solves this
problem. When ‘Bird-safe Mode’ is switched on, the user holds the phone to their ear (as though on the phone) in order to hear the sounds. This means that the app can be used silently and safely in all situations.

• Wind detection
The mildest breeze over a microphone is enough to create a loud roar on
the recording that masks all other sounds. To make sure this doesn’t
happen, Chirpomatic uses a wind detector feature developed by scientists
at Salford University. When wind is detected, the app flashes a warning so
that you can shelter the phone.
Chirpomatic is a fun way to connect with the natural world, whether out on a
country walk or in the back garden. The app is self-contained and works without a
network connection, so it can be used wherever you are.
However, as well as being fun and engaging people with nature, the app has a
more serious side. Recordings can be uploaded and will be available to zoologists,
ecologists and conservationists monitoring changes in the numbers and distribution
of species.

Chirpomatic has been over a year in development and employs the most up-to-date, cutting-edge advances in machine learning. Dr Hilary Lind from iSpiny explains the challenges: “Developing an effective automatic identifier for bird sounds is not easy. Birds have a very varied repertoire of songs and calls and recognising which bird is singing is like using speech recognition to pick out voices in a crowd. On top of that, we knew that the app had to be self-contained, so squeezing all the technology into an app was another huge hurdle that we had to overcome”.

The App is  £1.99 and available on iPhone and iPad with and Android version to follow.

#DiscgoCharger – Venues that have portable mobile phone charging units.by @jimboireland #Discgo

As we now enter an era where we spend more time on our mobile phones than our PC/Laptop we always need to keep watch on our battery, phones now are getting bigger and battery life is still an issue for some, power users of smartphones would be an example and its now fact people spend more time on their mobile device than ever..

Battery anxiety is one problem, there is many solutions though but there is times when these are not at hand, like portable charging units which can vary in price and size and of course either wireless charging options or the typical plug,in fact i was staying at a hotel a few weeks ago and i have multiple power banks and forgot one and had to ask at a hotel reception for a wall charger, these things happen and you can get caught out.

What is Discgo .

Running out of battery on your mobile phone.

It happens more often than we’d like it to and it happens when we need it most.

Responding to a need in today’s connected world, Discgo Charger is the first of its kind – a commercial portable mobile phone charger.

Designed specifically for high volume, commercial use, Discgo is a robust mobile phone charger that allows users the freedom to move around the venue or event while recharging. With Discgo, you don’t need to be plugged into a wall.

Discgo is the ultimate in customer service for exclusive venues that put customer-service first!

DiscGo Charger is a revolutionary mobile device charging system designed for use in venues such as hotels, bars, restaurants, airports etc. It offers a superior solution to traditional charging kiosks in that it allows patrons to charge and use their mobile device whilst keeping it with them. No longer do patrons need ask barmen to charge their phone, or lock their phones in a locker or stand at a kiosk.

The system consists of a Base Charger and 5 Discs. Each Disc is a mobile, compact device that can simultaneously charge up to 2 phones of any type. The Base is used to charge and monitor.

A truly portable charger, offering patrons mobility and convenience.

DiscGo Charger provides unparalleled convenience allowing patrons to charge their mobile phones anywhere they like. They simply request a Disc from the venue staff and take it with them to charge their device. The Disc is a compact, portable, battery powered device that charges a phone/tablet by a direct connection. Patrons, are free to use their phones and move about whilst charging. This convenience encourages patrons to stay a little longer, relax and buy a little more, instead of rushing home (or to their car) to charge their device. This is  valuable for both patrons and venues.

Simultaneous Fast Charging of Multiple Devices

The DiscGo charger supports fast charging of a broad range of mobile devices from numerous vendors. All the major phone brands and mobile device types are supported including, media players, phones and tablets. Fast charging, allows patrons to charge their phone in the shortest time possible. This provides convenience to patrons and maximises the utility of Discs. Each Disc can charge up to 2 devices simultaneously and holds sufficient charge for 5 large phones. Patrons can charge their phone and also share their Disc with a friend!

Wireless Telemetry and Paging

The DiscGo Charger incorporates wireless connectivity which provides a range of useful features. The system allows Venues to wireless page a Disc by pressing a button on the charger. A paged Disc will flash and beep allowing Venues to locate the Disc. The system also displays the real-time operating status and charge level of each Disc in a venue. Combining wireless paging and charge status reporting allows venues to conveniently identify, characterise and locate Discs. It facilitates using a large number of Discs with a single base unit, which is efficient on space and cost.

Wireless Security

The DiscGo Charger provides an optional security feature whereby the Charger and/or Disc will alarm (beep and flash) whenever a Disc is outside of radio range for a period of time. This feature is intended to reduce the accidental (or intentional) removal of Discs from a Venue and reduces the loss of Discs. In addition, Discs have a feature whereby Charging is automatically disabled after a settable period of time. This feature prohibits the use of Discs without a Base, discourages theft and limits use. The only way to reset a Disc is by placing it on a Base.

Customisability and Branding

Each Disc has a clear plastic cover under which proprietary branding and advertising can be placed. This allows Venues to customise their Disc for their venue. The commercial value of being able to place advertising directly in-front of a patron can also not be understated. In addition, the illumination colour, brightness and audio options on a Disc are configurable to suite the mood of each venue.

What does it cost the consumer?

Usually the end user gets the service for free – the device is leased to the venue for a yearly rate, in return for a unique marketing tool enabling increased exposure, footfall, and adding that extra level of customer care!

We lease the device for a fee per month. (1 Pod and 5 discs allowing up to ten people charge at any given time.)

For a limited time period they are also offering an outright purchasing option.

Why should you use Discgo?

1. It charges the phone as fast as being plugged into the wall – 1% a minute
2. It has a dedicated App which alerts the customer when their battery gets to 30% and then tells them where the nearest Venue is. ( Increasing footfall and awareness.
3. It has been proven to increase revenue and increase customer satisfaction in a survey across our 400 Strong venues in Australia.
4. An International Company – operating in UK, Ireland, Australia, France, Japan, America.
Discgo charger has an application on Android and iOS

This is a pretty good idea i have to say and again offers another solution to those who may feel a bit conscious about running out of power or if you are in a rush and have no time to charge your device, this is a superb solution to solve what could turn out to be a crisis for some. Not only this but you can also HIRE Discgo.
