The ProPILOT tech on the latest Nissan cars can help stressed out parents. #Motoring #Tech #Nissan #ProPILOT

Seven in 10 British parents (72%) admit they struggle to fully concentrate on the road when their children are misbehaving in the car.

But even more worrying is that four in ten adults (40%) reveal they know they’re less safe behind the wheel as a result, according to new research conducted by Nissan.

Parents say the level of distraction means they’ve taken their eyes off the road and their hands off the steering wheel. They also say they’ve run through red traffic lights, forgotten to indicate, braked suddenly, swerved into the next lane, and even been forced to stop the car completely.

As a result, parents are increasingly turning to in-car technology in the quest to keep the whole family safe on the road. The research highlighted that avoiding distractions is one of the biggest concerns for parents when choosing which car to buy with almost one in five (18%) saying they would actively look for driving assistance systems when choosing their next car. These could be automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.

Backseat battles between siblings or friends top the list of kids’ misbehaving (52%), followed by crying and screaming tantrums (43%), kicking the back of the driver’s seat (37%), undoing their seat belts (26%) and throwing toys around the car’s cabin (22%).

It is no surprise that, as a result, parents say they regularly feel stressed and anxious when their kids are in the car. They admit they can arrive at their destination either late or in a bad mood, having had a fight with their partner or even experienced road rage incidents with other drivers.

Many reveal they’re taking desperate measures to reduce the danger and distraction caused by driving with kids – 15% of adults completely avoid using motorways or busy roads when their kids are in the car, while others distract them with tablets or smartphones (37%), toys (33%) or sing-along music (40%) or keep them quiet with sweets (31%).

Jean-Philippe Roux, general manager, crossovers, Nissan Europe, said: “Any parent knows that family outings aren’t always straightforward. The smallest passengers can bring the biggest surprises when you’re trying to concentrate on the road, which can create a stressful time for the parent behind the wheel.

“Driving safely and staying focused should always be the driver’s main priority, and there’s no substitute for this. However, knowing your car is fitted with technology that can predict and prevent potentially dangerous situations can help create an overall feeling of calm at the wheel. This, in turn helps drivers keep their focus firmly on the road ahead.”

Nissan’s most advanced driver assistance technology, ProPILOT, is one solution for a less stressful, more enjoyable driving experience. ProPILOT enhances the driver’s control and confidence by assisting with steering, acceleration and braking. It works in a single lane on motorways and is optimised for low-speed congestion and high-speed cruising.

Designed to reduce fatigue and stress in everyday driving situations, ProPILOT can help improve safety. It is a ‘hands-on, eyes-on’ technology and the driver remains in control and responsible for the vehicle.

ProPILOT is available now on the Nissan LEAF electric vehicle and will be available on Nissan’s pioneering crossovers – the Qashqai and X-Trail – later this year.

Other available technologies include Intelligent Emergency Braking helps to avoid and minimise the impact of a collision. In congested streets and tight car parks, the Nissan Qashqai’s Intelligent Around View Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert provide added reassurance when parking and reversing, warning the driver of moving objects around and behind the vehicle.

SEO & Grow: A Search Engine Marketing Agency in Dublin with Peruvian Roots. #StartUp #SEO #IrishBiz #Marketing

SEO & Grow are a small, Dublin-based consultancy specialising in Search Engine Marketing. The 2 Co-Founders, Peter O’Neill & Aidan Rooney, are in their early 20s and have a very unique start-up story.
Peter and Aidan met while studying Marketing, Innovation & Technology together in DCU before embarking on a year-long spell in South America, where they worked as Head of Search Marketing at Peru Hop, an Irish-owned travel company. Within eleven months, they had more than doubled Peru Hop’s organic & referral website traffic, so they knew they had a flair and talent for SEO.
After spending some time apart working in London and Dublin respectively with Senior SEO/PPC Consultants, and upon graduating from DCU, the pair joined forces once more to set up SEO & Grow.
The 2 Dublin lads believe their experience to date has helped them to identify a real gap in the market: “Having worked both client-side and agency-side over the last couple of years, we noticed a huge disconnect between a business’s needs and an agency’s offering. A lot of SEO agencies do their best to withhold as much information as possible from their clients. Through an agency’s lens, the less a client knows, the more that client can be charged. SEO & Grow serves to bridge the gap between a business’s needs, and an agency’s offering.” The 2 Dubs have been busy since launch and are working with customers across various industries and several continents including a Luxury Travel Agents in South America, a Private Tutoring Agency in London & a Real Estate Company in California.

And, when they’re not working, Peter & Aidan are more than likely travelling… They spent last December working remotely from India – relaxing on the beaches of Goa, dodging snake charmers in Jaipur and sailing on the Ganges in Varanasi. Over the next 5 years, the pair have a very different approach than usual as to how they hope to grow: “We plan to continue scaling vertically, not horizontally – meaning we don’t want to build the biggest agency in Dublin with the most employees and clients, we want to build the best agency in Dublin with the most satisfied clients & the best margins.”

Review – The Skullcandy INDY true wireless earphones. #Skullcandy #TrueWireless

Over the last few weeks I have been using the Skullcandy PUSH and Venue and they have not disappointed me and delivered on quality and sound and they also look neat, Now I have had some time with the all new INDY true wireless and its time to talk about those.

Skullcandy Venue Review                 Skullcandy PUSH review

The INDY are an approach to Airpods which are overpriced rubbish in my book even the newest pair from Apple are the same albeit they offer wireless charging and new chip but they dont deliver on sound or volume I have them out via a friend of mine and just like their last pair for the money they dont cut it.

The INDY are similar to the recent Urbansita Stockholm I  reviewed and work quite similarly to them in many ways keeping things simple and another thing they stay in your ears which is important and also coming in at half the price and looking minimalistic.

The charging case that comes with the INDY is on the larger side compared to others I own but this is no big deal plus it offers three extra charges for your convenience so for those on the go this is welcome plus I like the design and the branding on the lid. You also get some LED lights to let you know your charge status.

The fit is good, solid and should not fall out they did not for me the gels that come with them give a decent seal too from the outside world but nothing compared to overheads or like their VENUE  but these pencil shaped earbuds as they are dubbed are never quite going to match overheads anyway but when compared to others they do a good job on fit and comfort. You do not need to use these extra gels by the way but they are there if you want a more secure fit.

The sound on these would be considered on the bright side and not much bass in comparison to others but from a price point view they are on par with others the volume however is not overly loud which is how I like my music and it is hard to get earphones like this loud anyway given to what I have tested anyway plus I have other models on the way and will do a comparison test with them all in a few weeks time but I like them they do a good job overall but again remember the source of sound varies here and in particular with You Tube for example where I spend alot of time you can easily find 4/5 songs the same and the quality difference can be quite remarkable.

The controls are easy to use though you might take a while to get comfortable this is the same as many that offer the tap experience but they do work fine given the small area to touch you may end up missing them until you get familiar especially if its your first pair of such. Other than that you have the same as many offer now the volume up is on the right and down on the left with one tap, skip and reverse tracks is hold for 2 seconds either side for forward or reverse and play and pause is 2 taps on the right.

If you want to use just one as a headset or just to listen to music it will only be the right,it works on its on with the other placed in the charge case, the same does not apply for the left side this only works on the right side, calls work on both ears and pretty decent quality and that’s a win for many as calls only come through on one side with many similar offerings out there.

Overall are they worth the money? Well yes but there is better sounding ones out there but that’s just my personal taste compared to Airpods which are overpriced they are worth it. There is the cons of which is little with these one is NO EQ APP, DO NOT put them in the charge case without the gels on them because you will find it hard to remove being magnetic..Battery life shorter compared to some others but you still get around 16 hours on the go.

Bright Sky Ireland is a new app that helps victims of domestic abuse. #BrightSkyIRL #Apps #Abuse

Bright Sky Ireland, A new free app that connects victims of domestic violence and abuse to advice and support services across the country. Bright Sky Ireland is the latest addition to Vodafone Foundation’s domestic violence project, which uses connectivity to help support those affected by domestic abuse here and across Europe. The app launches today on the Android and iOS platforms.

Bright Sky Ireland, created in partnership with the UK-based domestic abuse charity Hestia, along with Women’s Aid Ireland and An Garda Síochána, enables users to locate their nearest support centre by searching their area, eircode or current location. A short questionnaire will help users assess the safety of a relationship while also providing information about different forms of abuse such as sexual violence, stalking and harassment. The app also highlights the types of supports available, steps to consider if leaving an abusive relationship and how to help a friend affected by domestic abuse.

The app contains a ground-breaking feature designed to log incidents of domestic abuse without any content being saved on the device itself. It enables users to send information about incidents in a secure digital journal, using a text, audio, video or photo function. Evidence collated through this function will enable Gardaí to intervene and can help secure prosecutions.

Recent research carried out by the Vodafone Foundation showed that 31% of Irish workers have experienced some form of domestic abuse of which, more than half (57%) felt safer at work compared to home. 63% experienced psychological abuse and control, 47% experienced physical violence, 23% experienced sexual violence or abuse and 19% experienced stalking. 21% said they experienced some form of domestic abuse daily and 28% said they experienced it two or three times a week.

Attendees at the event in the Science Gallery in Dublin this morning heard from Anne O’Leary, CEO, Vodafone Ireland, Sarah Benson, Executive Director, Women’s Aid Ireland, Declan Daly, Detective Chief Superintendent, Garda National Protective Services Bureau and Patrick Ryan, CEO, Hestia. John Liversidge from Thames Valley Partnership in the UK gave a demonstration of the app followed by a discussion with a panel of experts, facilitated by Dearbhail McDonald. The panel included Emma Murphy, domestic abuse survivor and advocate, Detective Sergeant Laura Sweeney, Services Manager at Women’s Aid Gillian Dennehy, Vodafone Group Foundation Director Andrew Dunnett and Sean Cooke, CEO of Men’s Development Network.

Speaking on the launch of the Bright Sky Ireland app, Vodafone Ireland CEO Anne O’Leary said: “Unfortunately domestic abuse impacts many people across Ireland, with victims in some cases unable to get the support and guidance they desperately need. Following a successful rollout in the UK, I am extremely proud to launch Bright Sky in Ireland to provide victims here with a localised information and support portal. The app, developed by Hestia, with support from our partners in Women’s Aid Ireland and An Garda Síochána, is a very practical tool for people facing a variety of difficult situations. This launch also compliments the domestic abuse policy Vodafone introduced earlier this year for employees and managers to provide support in the workplace.

“Vodafone supports the wider cause in Ireland and wants to help highlight all forms of domestic abuse.  With a third of Irish workers experiencing domestic abuse and one in five Irish women affected by domestic violence, vital supports for victims are of paramount importance to us.”

Patrick Ryan, CEO at Hestia, said: “We know that without access to specialist services, the long-term impact of domestic abuse can be devastating. Bright Sky was conceived in consultation with women living in Hestia refuges in 2015. Their lived experience led us to create a much-needed app which has now been downloaded nearly 20,000 times. We are delighted that Bright Sky will now be available here in Ireland to provide those experiencing domestic abuse, as well as friends and family worried about someone, with the information and support they need to break the cycle of abuse.”

Sarah Benson, CEO of Women’s Aid said: “As Ireland’s national frontline domestic violence service provider, Women’s Aid is delighted to team up with Vodafone Ireland, An Garda Síochána and Hestia to provide a practical and useful tool for women experiencing abuse from current or former intimate partners.  Bright Sky Ireland offers key National Helpline information and details of local supports as well as information for family and friends concerned about loved ones.

A very important feature of the app is the myth busting information as well as quiz to help people recognise the signs of abuse.  However, our biggest hope is that the ability to log incidents of abuse whether it is photos, text notes or recordings, will help women experiencing abuse gather the pattern of evidence they need to avail of legal protection and secure convictions of the new crime of coercive control.”

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said:A core function of policing is protecting the vulnerable. Anything that can help An Garda Síochána to combat the terrible and all too common crime of domestic abuse is to be welcomed. This app will help inform victims as well as providing a safe way for them to record incidents of domestic abuse, which could help secure prosecutions, particularly in relation to the new offence of coercive control. The partnership approach to the development of this app also demonstrates once again how multi-agency collaboration is critical to keeping people safe.”

Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan said: “Violence against women is a blight on our society, and we must be more willing to accept this uncomfortable truth, to be open about it and to confront it. I am therefore delighted that the Vodafone foundation, along with their partners Hestia, have developed this innovative concept, the Bright Sky app, to tackle it. The app will no doubt be a significant resource to those experiencing domestic abuse situations.

I know that An Garda Síochana fully endorse it, and that in developing it, Vodafone had the support of Women’s Aid. The way forward is for the State, community and voluntary services to work together to respond to this violence, by educating the public, supporting the victims and dealing appropriately with the perpetrators.”

Early this year, Vodafone Ireland launched its new domestic abuse policy that aims to support employees who are experiencing domestic violence or abuse. The first comprehensive programme of its kind in Ireland, Vodafone provides support to employees – including, up to 10 additional days paid leave, specialist counselling, management training and support toolkits. The policy also provides emergency financial aid such as salary advances and assistance for employees to set up a new bank account that allows financial independence.

Younger generations pose biggest cybersecurity threat to businesses. #Cybersecurity #Business

Younger generations have been revealed as the biggest security threat to businesses as one in ten (10%) Millennials admitted that they would knowingly use a work device that was under cyber-attack. Meanwhile, 42% of Gen Z office workers confessed that they have lost a device that was linked to their work email account.

The survey of 500 Irish office workers was commissioned by specialist IT solutions distributor, DataSolutions, and carried out by Censuswide in May 2019.

Lifting the lid on some of the biggest cybersecurity threats facing businesses today, the study found that 19% of all Irish office workers have sent sensitive work-related information to the wrong email recipient. Furthermore, 14% of Irish office workers have copied sensitive company data from previous or current employers for their own use.

The findings also reveal that 28% of Gen Z employees admitted to having access to company information or private logins from a previous employer, followed by Millennials (16%), Gen Xs (9%) and Baby Boomers (8%).

Gen Z was also found to be the most suspicious generation when it comes to hackers targeting devices used on a daily basis. In fact, Gen Z office workers topped every category as the most concerned group in relation to the hacking of internet connected devices including game consoles, wearables, smart security cameras and smart TVs.

For example, 25% of Gen Z office workers are worried about their wearables (such as smart watches) being hacked, compared to 15% of Millennials, 19% of Gen Xs and 15% of Baby Boomers.

Overall, the survey found that across all generations, the devices that Irish office workers fear most being hacked are their smart security cameras (31%), followed by smart home alarms (30%) and smart home voice assistants (28%).

Dave Keating, Group Security Director, DataSolutions

Commenting on the survey findings, Dave Keating, Group Security Director, DataSolutions, said: “It’s clear from our survey findings that Irish office workers, albeit some more than others, are cautious because of the threat of cyber-attacks.

“While it is a positive sign that the younger generations place an emphasis on internet security, we can see that this awareness doesn’t always translate into action. For example, when the WhatsApp security breach occurred earlier this year, everybody was talking about it, but how many people immediately went on and actually deleted or upgraded the app on their phone? I’d say fewer than you think.

“That’s why employers cannot take for granted that their employees will take steps to stave off an attack when they have other work commitments or if it impacts on the use of their devices. Business leaders need to remain alert to the dangers that human error and carelessness can pose.

“The fact that one in ten Millennial Irish office workers would choose to still use a device that they know is under cyber-attack is a clear indication that business leaders need to safeguard themselves by putting the right solutions and strategies in place.

“If they don’t, the security and possibly the future of their organisation is at stake. As we will be discussing at this year’s Secure Computing Forum in the RDS on 12th September, cyber-attacks and breaches can be detrimental, not only in terms of costs and resources but also more critically, reputations. We will present lots of useful tips and advice on how to safeguard against cyber-attacks.”

Oupio’s Hi-Fi powered smart lamp launches on Indiegogo. #Oupio #Indiegogo @oupio_official

Tech-heads, minimalists and interior designers take note: the premium speaker-meets-smart-lamp Oupio puts you in full control of a room’s ambience. While most hybrid products merely ‘glue’ functions together, the sleek yet timeless Oupio fully integrates high-end sound with lighting that covers the full range of sunlight – enabling it to match our natural circadian rhythm and boost productivity.

The quest for dynamic ambience

“We’re not wired to live in confined spaces with fixed ambiences,” says Vlad Iorgulescu, founder and designer at Oupio. “Ambience should be dynamic and respond to our human needs – so it can have a positive influence on our mood, health and wellbeing.”

“And while current technologies offer a vast array of functionality, they also create a vast array of clutter. So we also need hybrid products, with mixed functionality, that merge tech with interior design principles and, as a result, seamlessly integrate in any home environment.”

“Companies such as Google call the application of these notions ‘neuroaesthetics’. We prefer to call it good design,” says Vlad.

In other words: our living spaces need an update.

No more landfill

“As a product designer, I saw a lot of products that fall under the category ‘future landfill materials’,” says Vlad. “But when we began talking about this to customers of our design and engineering consultancy Creative Pill, we realized it’s a shared desire to build things that last – both in their function and their aesthetic.”

With a background in architecture, Vlad decided to apply this philosophy to product design. Building a small dedicated global team of designers, engineers and audio/electronics specialists, he set out to design a hybrid product that could define a room’s ambiance. Oupio was born.

The resulting spherical object has a diameter of 22 centimeters. Crafted from carefully selected wood (oak, ash or cork), glass (white opal) and anodized aluminum, Oupio is also modular. Its modularity means it can be installed anywhere – whether as a pendant or desk lamp.

Own less

More than anything else, sound and light define a room’s ambience. “Yes, air quality is another important factor, and early prototypes did actually include sensors. But then we decided to keep things simple,” chuckles Vlad.

In fact, fully integrating sound with light is not simple at all: “They don’t like being together in the same small space. For example, the LED drivers create noise and the LEDs themselves generate a lot of heat that we needed to dissipate so it would not interfere with the sound.”

Such challenges explain why somewhat similar existing products on the market are not true hybrids but merely ‘glue’ together different functions into one object. With the glass lamp shade doubling as the actual acoustic chamber, Oupio is a true hybrid.

Do more

‘Human-centric lighting’ is a term that is gaining traction. Scientific studies have shown that the moon’s white light boosts productivity, while sunset yellows boost melatonin production for a restful night’s sleep.

By using twenty 1-watt LEDs, Oupio covers the full spectrum of natural sunlight (2,700K to 6,000K). “If the Indiegogo campaign is particularly successful we hope, as a stretch goal, to apply RGB LEDs for the initial production run – so by flickering these, we can for example simulate fireplace lighting,” says Vlad.

However, current functionality is already impressive: producing up to 2,000 lumens makes it perfect for a modest living room or a large bedroom. With the LEDs designed for a lifetime of at least 10,000 hours, you’ll never have to change a lightbulb again.

Groove more

Audiophiles will be particularly impressed by the many interesting tech and design choices made by the Oupio team.

Using the patented Balance Mode Radiator technology from sound innovators Tectonic Audio Labs, which ensures the sound is distributed evenly throughout a room, and drivers that are placed in a way that turns them into a virtual coaxial driver, Oupio offers high-fidelity, well-balanced sound with plenty of bass and clarity. While covering a wide range of frequencies (65Hz to 20KHz), you can also crank it up enough to annoy the neighbours (90dB).

Music streaming is done via Bluetooth or audio cable, while Oupio’s various functions can be controlled via the intuitive touch interface. Groups of up to five units can be made via a dedicated low-latency WiFi network.

Oupio offers: 1. Audio streaming via Bluetooth to groups of up to 5 units 2. Human centric lighting that simulates the natural sunlight 3. High quality materials and good design 4. Touch interface & App Control.
