Fairphone raises the standard for a fair circular economy with 14 materials. #Fairphone

Fairphone, the Dutch social enterprise building a market for ethical smartphones, has announced a shortlist of 14 materials that show high usage in the electronics industry and offer the greatest potential for supply chain improvement. These are aluminium, cobalt, copper, gold, indium, lithium, magnesium, nickel, plastics, rare earth, silver, tin, tungsten and zinc. Fairphone analysed over 50 materials found in smartphones, resulting in a selection that will guide its responsible sourcing efforts in the coming years. Fairphone makes the most of the materials used in its products and is moving towards a circular economy by using materials from more responsible sources, while emphasizing reuse and recycling and designing phones to last as long as possible.

The evaluation used a range of criteria including:

  • Market demand growth expected in the coming decades and availability of recycled supply
  • The share of the electronics industry in the worldwide demand for the material
  • Whether the material is critical to smartphone functionality
  • Whether it will be present in future Fairphone products and accessories
  • If there are serious social and environmental issues related to the material’s extraction or recycling

While many of the materials analyzed had serious issues to consider, these 14 materials provide Fairphone with the most potential to make a significant impact and show the most urgent need for intervention.

The global electronics industry is a fast growing sector with a complex supply chain. Minerals found in common consumer electronics, such as smartphones, are mined, traded and refined into usable material to manufacture components. Unfortunately, the working environment in the mines can be unsafe with issues of child labour, environmental degradation, and hazardous working conditions recorded. As a result, the electronics industry tends to shy away from it, placing more emphasis on recycling as the solution for the industry’s sourcing issues. Yet, millions of people around the world – particularly in developing economies – rely on the sector for their livelihoods. Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) is an especially critical source of income for millions of people and as a result, Fairphone is focussing on ASM to make improvements in the sector.

Although Fairphone envisions a world that is truly circular, it’s still far away from becoming reality. Mining will remain a key supplier in the coming years, as the idea that recycling alone will be able to meet humanity’s growing demand is a fairytale. In the coming decades, the population growth and economic development around the world are expected to lead to a sharp increase in demand for metals and non-metallic minerals that are key for the green energy transition. A report by World Bank Group found that demand for some minerals will increase nearly 500% by 2050. Yet, of all electronic waste generated, only 5% of materials are estimated to be recovered for reuse.

Since mining will be a source of materials in the coming decades, the electronics industry must work to improve the mining supply chain as well as increase the recycled material supply. Fairphone’s aim is not to avoid hotspots where social and environmental challenges exist, such as conflict and high-risk areas, instead Fairphone works towards lasting improvements in those areas. Arkphire delivers on multi-million euro employee mobilisation programme for AIB. #Arkphire #AIB

Irish headquartered IT product procurement and services company, Arkphire, has completed the rollout of a major employee-centred digital transformation programme, which is a multi-million investment by leading Irish financial institution, AIB.  At the heart of the project which aligns with AIB’s digitalisation and ways of working strategies, is the sourcing, delivery and support of a fully digital workspace for AIB employees across Ireland and the UK. The ambitious employee mobilisation programme, which gained urgency due to the Covid-19 pandemic, has enabled AIB to continue to provide an uninterrupted service to its customers, while also empowering its workforce to communicate and collaborate innovatively across the entire enterprise from their home workspaces.

The project saw Arkphire deliver 8,000 digital workspace solutions including Microsoft Surface laptops, laptop stands, monitors, docking stations and keyboards to AIB’s employees across Ireland and the UK. The laptops were configured as notebook or touch-screen-operated tablet PCs, based on the AIB employee’s preference in either country. Arkphire is also providing a range of ongoing support services to AIB including:

  • Adoption Services—the ability to procure, assemble and roll out hardware pre-installed with software as specified by AIB for its employees’ specific needs and deliver it to their homes anywhere in either country;
  • Break/fix support—enhancing the standard warranty provided by Microsoft to ensure timely and reliable collection and repair of equipment;

Samsung’s Wildlife Watch invites you to become a virtual ranger and watch over endangered animals live from the African bush. #Samsung #Wildlife

Today Samsung announced the launch of Wildlife Watch, an ambitious new pilot that is using technology to help fight back against poaching in the African Bush. The pro-grade cameras in Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition (FE) handsets will capture live footage that will be streamed 24/7 from the Balule Nature Reserve in South Africa, part of the Kruger National Park. Everyone is invited to Take the Watch and become a virtual ranger, helping to protect endangered animals from poaching by monitoring them in their natural habitat and enjoy live sightings of these spectacular animals from home.

Samsung has joined forces with African technology pioneer Africam to reimagine one of its latest Galaxy mobile devices in an initiative that uses technology to help make the world a better place. Africam’s profit for purpose model means they charitably support The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit; an all-female troop who use non-violent methods to prevent poaching, which has surged during the pandemic as illegal hunters take advantage of the sudden fall in tourism. Through the Wildlife Watch initiative viewers will be closer to the work of the rangers, see the animals they protect and have the opportunity to donate to support them.

South Korean born, Berlin Based DJ, producer, and fashion designer Peggy Gou, who loves animals – especially giraffes – is fronting the initiative to champion and encourage people to take part, take the watch and raise awareness.

Four Samsung Galaxy S20 FE handsets have been installed as additional cameras in the bush, boosting the reach of the existing Africam infrastructure in the Balule Nature Reserve by over half for the duration of the pilot. The pro-grade camera in each handset is being used to capture animals for the live stream. Supporting the rangers in their daily tasks, the bigger pixels, enhanced camera AI and 30x Space Zoom including 3 x Optical Zoom in the handsets have improved the quality of the photos the Black Mambas are able to take whilst on patrol. From a distance and even in low light and the unreliable conditions of the bush they can send clear and detailed images back to their base as evidence for investigations into poaching activity.

 A camouflaged jeep fitted with a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE will also be used by the rangers for surveillance patrols, and the live streamed action will bring you closer to the rangers and their daily experiences.

 Samsung’s Galaxy upcycling programme aims to solve social needs, lengthen product lifecycles, and reduce waste by reimagining phones into new roles. Repurposing existing products to serve a critical new function is a great way to avoid needing to create new products. As part of the Wildlife Watch initiative Samsung handsets are being redeployed by the rangers as CCTV cameras for perimeter fences, as well as adding crucial tech support to improve the rangers’ daily patrols.

 By becoming a virtual ranger and taking the watch on wildlife-watch.com, you can alert rangers if you see animals in danger or signs of poaching, share what you see via snapshots on social to encourage others to take part and donate to The Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit. Those who own the Légende tripod and backpack receive the exclusive benefit of an unlimited warranty, designed to usher in a circular economy that brings an end to the “throwaway culture.” The Légende Tripod is crafted of 170 individual parts that can be repaired instead of having to replace the tripod in case of damage. One hundred percent of the tripod parts are replaceable and seventy percent of those can be done by the owner, so the part will be shipped out directly for simple repair at no extra charge.  

Sustainable Materials Reinforce Légende’s Earth-First Approach
Légende pushes to create the smallest environmental footprint possible with the use of sustainable materials that complement the unlimited warranty. One hundred percent of the backpack’s main exterior fabric is made up of recycled polyester and sixty-five percent of the entire bag weight is comprised of recycled fabrics.  Additionally, the Eco Leather tripod strap and backpack details are made of cruelty-free, environmental-friendly, and non-toxic synthetic leather.  It is light and extremely soft with great performance.   

Supporting the Next Generation of Photographers
Légende backers will contribute to the development of Gitzo’s Wild Shots Outreach educational program, which seeks to educate the children bordering the Kruger National Park about conservation and photography.  Five percent of campaign sales will go towards this program that will help the students by opening up eco employment opportunities and instilling the value of our protected spaces.
